with openoffice-1.1-es, I can't spell check or type accents

2005-01-19 Thread edwinculp
This is really strange. I'm using up to date current, kernel, ports,
mergemaster, etc. and I updated openoffice a few days ago. I almost never use
it but decided to test it and typed a few words in Spanish and found that the
dead keys weren't working to type letters with accents [ á é í ó ú ] so I
thought no problem spell check will take care of it. Surprise, the spanish
spell check doesn't work either.

I must be doing something really dumb because aspell spanish spell check works
in everything else such as gaim, netscape composer, etc. I'm using everything
in kde in spanish, with everything configured with spanish as the primary
language.

Time for the dunce cap ;) could someone give me a hint as to what I have or
haven't done?

Thanks,

ed

Simple, graphic, desktop calculator

2004-12-20 Thread edwinculp
IIRC, kde had a simple desktop calculator. Either it has been removed or I
can't find it. I have
also checked ports and haven't found anything similar except add. It is for
may wife so after
using the kde one for years she doesn't like add at all and even less bc, dc,
etc.

Could anyone suggest one or correct me if it is still in kde and I just haven't
found it.

 Tom,

I am using skype in FreeBsd-5.3-p2.

The only think that you have to configure is (generic kernel):

 /etc/rc.conf:

 linux_enable=YES

after that you can find skype:

 whereis skype

 go to /usr/ports/.../skype

 make install clean

My only problem is about microfone using KDE. Its not working.

Have you checked the volumes set in kmix - Input ?

When I first tried skype I found that in my instalation they were set to zero
by default. You can then
register echo123 as a skype user and call them, listen to their message then
record a message in your voice(10
seconds). They will then play it back so you can use it as a reference for
troubleshooting.

Good look,

ed

cvsupd configuration ? unknown collection src-all

2004-10-11 Thread edwinculp
I decided to give cvsupd a try to make my upgrading a bit more efficient and bandwidth
friendly. I read the manual page chose a local server [local3], cvsup-ed, updated the
repository, built world, kernel, etc. All with no problems. I started cvsupd on the
machine with the following options:

cvsupd -b /usr/local/etc/cvsup -c sup -s sup -C 3

I went to one of the machines that I wanted to update and started cvsup and got Server
message: unknow collection src-all and all others and a message that said it was
skipping the colections, ended by a message that stated that it had finished
successfully.

It actually updated nothing. I've used cvsup as a client for years with no problem.
From the manual page it seemed very straight forward and simple but somehow I've
managed to screw it up.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

ed

P.D. I'm running current. I've got the same configuration for cvs-supfile on both
machines except for the server that I changed for freebsd to local3. Both machined
were update from freebsd yesterday with no problem.

skype and audio distortion (aka: donald duck imitation)

2004-10-02 Thread edwinculp
I've installed skype and am able to call with no problem. The recieving end hears me
as if I were there but when they respond it sounds like a bad imitation of Donald
Duck. I've tried using the connection test service of skype, echo123 with the same
results, both the skype voice and my recorded and played back voice sound like Donald
Duck. I've tried it on different machines with different sound chipsets and it seems
to be accross the board.

Has anyone experienced this? Were you able to fix it? Is it working as expected for
anyone without distortion?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Very telling mail that. Hopefully someone may find time to solve it.

Yes, I agree, basically because Micro$oft has users accustomed to transparently access

 What's a PITA by the way ?
Pain in the ass :)

How to unmount devices mounted from konqueror file manager and kde

2004-09-25 Thread edwinculp
By changing the permissions on the cd and fd, enabling vfs.usermount and creating
local mount directories, users can now easily mount and access cd's and fd's directly
from there kde konqueror file manager. The question is how can they be unmounted? I
haven't quite figured that one out yet and it causes more problems than not being able
to mount. With current, I've had a crash or two trying the umount -f from a ssh
connection.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Nope, didn't work or even change anything. I can still print the
cups test page and anything form gimp but nothing through the cups
configuration nor can I configure the C63 with apsfilter because it
isn't in gs although ijs is compiled in and there must be a way to
use the gimp-print driver through gs or update apsfilter to use the
new gimp-print drivers but I haven't found either.

Thanks again, Anish, for the suggestion.

  ed

I'm interested in this also. I used Apsfilter to set up an Epson
 C62
that works fine except for printing email - it prints the ps code.

First as much as it hurts to admit it, the C62 and the C63/64 are very different
beasts. If I had known it at the time I wouldn't have bought it but ...

Our problems are different but yours doesn't sound too difficult because you can print
web pages. What program are you using to print your email?

It sounds like you just need a -P printerConfigThatPrintsWebPages added to the lpr.
ed
 I
print web pages, .pdf files and .txt files fine. I haven't tested
anything else, I mainly need the ability to print emails more than
anything else. I have the same problem with a Lexmark E312
 LazerJet. I
haven't tried Cups, don't know the first thing about it.

Actually, all you need do is follow the instructions at the bottom
 of the
 Makefile in /usr/ports/print/cups-lpr

It says to add two lines to /etc/make.conf

And if you've done a installworld since you've installed cups-lpr,
 just
 deinstall, reinstall cups-lpr.

Before you begin, try which lpr.

which will report which lpr command is found first via the path
 variable. I
suspect it will say /usr/bin/lpr. After you perform the above
 steps, it'll
 say /usr/local/bin/lpr.

 Thanks for the info.

My moboard is an ASUS P4-533T. I think the problem is loosely
 related. I
think the acpi code is looking at too broad a port range or
 something...
I discovered that I can fix the problem by removing acpi from my
 kernel, but
I hope to get a real solution, cause I want ACPI.

I'm willing to provide more info or run some code for the developer...

A solution seems to be coming. I haven't tried it yet and don't even know if 4.10 has
device.hints under /boot, but you might try commenting out
#hint.fdc.0.at=isa
#hint.fdc.0.port=0x3F0
#hint.fdc.0.irq=6
#hint.fdc.0.drq=2
#hint.fd.0.at=fdc0
#hint.fd.0.drive=0
#hint.fd.1.at=fdc0
#hint.fd.1.drive=1
and rebooting and see if it changes. With acpi enabled, of course.

Good luck,

Just to check, you have removed the base install's lp* utilities
  right?

No, I must have read over, under, around and/or through that in the
 cups howto's I been using.

Let me be sure that I am understanding. I should remove lpd, lpq,
lpc, lpr, lprm and family to use cups?

That could definitely be the problem because I have't done it.

Thanks, I'll give it a try in a few.

Nope, didn't work or even change anything. I can still print the cups test page and
anything form gimp but nothing through the cups configuration nor can I configure the
C63 with apsfilter because it isn't in gs although ijs is compiled in and there must
be a way to use the gimp-print driver through gs or update apsfilter to use the new
gimp-print drivers but I haven't found either.

Thanks again, Anish, for the suggestion.

Re: apsfilter and Epson Stylus C63 on Current

2004-08-23 Thread edwinculp
I'm still fighting with the Epson Stylus C63. I can print images with gimp through
gimp-print and after configuring cups I can print the test page and it looks great but
I can't print anything else. Other programs see the printer configured by cups and
can send jobs to, what I assume to be the queue although they don't show up in
kjobViewer and I can only verify their existence with lpc status all and it shows:
# lpc status all
c63:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
1 entry in spool area
c63 is ready and printing

The light on the printer blinks but it's never printed and just goes away. I suppose
that since I know nothing about cups, I'm mixing it with lpd with no knowledge of
interoperability, assuming that it exists.

I would love to be able to just update apsfilter with the new gimp-print drivers and
use lpd but I haven't been able to make it happen.

I've recompiled ghostscript, gimp-print and apsfilter multiple times from ports.

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

ed

I've always used apsfilter and it has just worked with a minimum of
muss and fuss. I sure hope Andres is going to keep it updated
because if not I for one am really going to miss it.

  Thanks again for your help,

Have you tried installing them from the ports?

   cd /usr/ports/print/gimp-print
   make install

Once they're installed, run the setup script for apsfilter again.

Thanks, Andrew, you have been a great help. I always use ports and more even
port[install|upgrade]. Yesterday, I pkg_delete[d] gimp-print and apsfilter and rebuilt
them. I even downloaded the latest gimp-print (5.something) and was going to build it
but it prints so well from gimp I decided it probably wasn't worth it and I could have
problems with some paths.

I must be doing something wrong using the apsfilter SETUP because after recompiling
the above and then ghostscript to be sure that it wasn't the problem, I got the same
printer options in in the gimp-print (ijs driver; version 4.2.1 and later) as before.
That makes me think that I have done something wrong with the compiling of ghostscript
or I don't understand apsfilter (which is a pretty much a given ;) because it works
with gimp and not with apsfilter.

Thanks again for your patience. I think I may just have to go buy an older printer
that is idiot proof for the time being :)

Have a great weekend,

Together with other information for the C63 it

Were you able to print a test page when you configured apsfilter
 with
 the gimp-print driver?

I don't know how to install the latest (4.1.7) gimp-print drivers with the current
apsfilter so I haven't used it for printing.

Are you sure lpd is running?

I can set up a local printer an print text perfectly and print from gimp with the
correct driver configuration but that doesn't help me with postscript (web pages etc.)

Exactly how are you trying to print with lpd that is not working?

Cups. Cups allows me to configure the printer but the printcap looks something like:

gimp|Epson EPSON Stylus C63:rm=local2.local.net:rp=gimp:

I have no idea how it actually works. The cups configuration shows /dev/lpt0 as the
device but nothing gets to the spooler or the printer.

I've always used apsfilter and it has just worked with a minimum of muss and fuss. I

Re: cd and dvd burning program K3b and permissions for non-root users.

2004-08-19 Thread edwinculp
First I would like to thank:

Oliver Fuchs [EMAIL PROTECTED]
E. Eusey [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oliver Fuchs [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For their excellent and similar suggestions for getting this to work and apologize for
not answering quicker but I've been trying and trying to find the right combination.
After applying and testing all individually, I still haven't been successful.

The problem is that cd0 isn't recognized by k3b unless the user is root. The only
error I can find from k3b is:

k3b: (K3bDeviceManager) /dev/cd0 resolved to /dev/cd0
k3b: (K3bCdDevice) /dev/cd0: init()
k3b: (K3bCdDevice::ScsiCommand) open device  failed.
k3b: ERROR: (K3bCdDevice) Unable to do inquiry.

Perms are:

/dev # ls -l cd0 xpt0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root operator4, 22 Aug 16 10:46 cd0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root operator 229, 0 Aug 16 10:46 xpt0

I created a mount point directory for the plaza and added the entry in fstab and
they can mount /dev/cd0 on their mount point.

/dev/cd0 on /home/plaza/cdrom (cd9660, local, nodev, nosuid,
read-only, mounted by plaza)

I set up sudo for camcontrol which works perfectly

ALL ALL = NOPASSWD: /sbin/camcontrol devlist

/home/plaza # camcontrol devlist
SONY CD-RW CRX230ED 4YS1at scbus0 target 1 lun 0
(cd0,pass0)

I have set uid root on:

/usr/local/bin # ls -l cdrdao cdrecord
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root wheel 510232 Aug 12 20:22 cdrdao
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root wheel 254636 Aug 12 20:19 cdrecord

The plaza user can play audio with xmms but still can't use k3b.

If you have any ideas what I´m missing, they would be appreciated.

I saw that there are some linux drivers for Epson printers in general and the C6?.
Has anyone used them? Can they be used directly as input filters in printcap?

cd and dvd burning program K3b and permissions for non-root users.

2004-08-14 Thread edwinculp
I've installed K3b and it works great for the root user but I can't get it to work for
any non-privileged user even though I have put the user in the wheel group and have
set sysctl vfs.usermount=1, cd0 has permissions set to 666, the same in devfs.conf
(That solves the problem for xmms but not for k3b. I have tried to suid and kde won't
let it start. I'm out of ideas. After this much time, I'm sure that I'm making a
mountain out of a mole hill and I'm missing something very simple.

Any help would be appreciated. I can't see my users using burncd

Thanks

I believe k3b runs dvd+rw-tools underneath, so you might consider
 making
dvd+rw-tools setuid-root. See the port's Makefile if you have
 questions.

Thanks, Chuck. I saw that dvd+rw-tools wasn't installed so I checked the make file
and found that it depends on:
   cdrecord:${PORTSDIR}/sysutils/cdrtools \
   cdrdao:${PORTSDIR}/sysutils/cdrdao

So I set the uid-root on cdrecord, readcd and cdrdao. It still doesn't find cd0. I
must have missed one. I'm going to keep looking.

Thanks again, I was sure that was it.
