I've finally found some spare time to test the hot-swap capability of
the IBM x3550 machines with FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE-p8. Good news, it
works as expected.

Here's the info required to make it happen:

Kernel configuration lines to include. Note that you can omit the
AAC_DEBUG line. If you do so, you won't see anything in the logs when
the controller is working. I've only tried debug level zero and you'll
see below that it generates quite a lot of info.

device aac # Adaptec FSA RAID
device aacp# SCSI passthrough for aac (requires CAM)
options AAC_DEBUG=0 # Set debug level from 0 to 3.

Here's what FreeBSD reports:

grep -i raid /var/run/dmesg.boot
aac0: port 0x4000-0x40ff mem
0xcce0-0xccff,0xcafe-0xcaff irq 17 at device 0.0 on
pci2
aac0: Adaptec Raid Controller 2.0.0-1
aacd0: on aac0

Now when you pull a drive out from the machine, wait a around a minute
or so and then plug it back in, you'll get those messages in
/var/log/messages:

+aac0: EventNotify(0)
+aac0: (EnclosureManagement) EMPID 0 unit 1 event 17

Re: Recommended servers for FreeBSD

2007-10-30 Thread Erich Dollansky

Hi,

ok, I did not buy any kind of servers in recent times.

Before I either took Tyan motherboards for real low-cost servers and
either got them built into a machine by the supplier or even did it myself.

Both routes offered the best price/performance ratio.

In all other cases I took Fire servers from Sun.

I believe the biggest difference between IBM and Sun will actually be
the people who will finally arrive at your site in case of problems.

The same should be true for HP.

low budget file servers, but both aren't being sold anymore. I recently
got a few IBM x3200 and x3550. They are really nicely built and I
hardly have any problems. However, the on-board RAID controllers
(Adaptec AIC-9580W) aren't supported under FreeBSD so I fit them with
3ware 9000 series RAID cards. Although I really like those 3ware cards,
it seems like an extra expense that could be avoided.

What servers do you guys buy and why? I would really like to have the
on-board RAID supported. Do HP servers play well with FreeBSD? If yes,
which models would you recommend?

Many thanks,

Andrew.

Re: Recommended servers for FreeBSD

2007-10-30 Thread Grant Peel
All,

We have been using Dell since early 2001. in fact, I have one comming up on two
years uptime. (FreeBSD 4.4, Yeah, I know, but I just can't bring myself to shut
it down to upgrade). Raid works well, new SAS systems work well, no burn CPUs
or Memory. Lots of great online and on phone support.

I tried sourcing some 1u and 2u systems elsewhere (no names please), and in the
end the Dells with 3 Year silver support and Waranttee were the same price, in
a couple ways cheaper.

As for speed, they seem to middle of the pack. BUT remember ... bus speed,
memory speed, disk access, are all sky high anyways, so speed may not bee an
issue anyways, even with slower systems.

About the only negative thing I have to say is that I was not at all impressed
with the DRAC III/XT cards. The new generation 4 and 5 cards seem to be better
though.

I had some problems with freeBSD 6.0 freezing, but the same hardware is running
6.2 with no issues now. I am sure that was a FReeBSD quotas problem anyway.

Even a simple 24 port managed switch I have works good.

My two cents,

I've had nothing but great luck with them. So far, all their
hardware I've tried to use has been supported. There are rumors that
their newest systems have gigabit network cards that FreeBSD doesn't
have a stable driver for, so you're forced to install an Intel or
other one in one of the available PCI slots.

RAID works great, hot swap and the whole works. Even the RAID
battery status comes up in dmesg appropriately.

We tend to use used systems, as we're not in need of the fastest
systems out there, but we're looking at buying a couple brand-new
within the next month or so. If you're interested, trying buying a
box on eBay (great prices), and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I was not impressed with how difficult it was to actually get them
working with me; but, I was a 3rd party, or maybe even 4th party,
in the dealings I had with them in the most comparable case to
what you are asking about, when a motherboard failed to run
on a Proliant after a disastrous incident involving a
facilities manager and a large UPS circuit.

The box was in Missouri at one of my clients, the company that
purchased and installed it was in California, and I could have
sworn I heard a Brahman herd braying in the background when I
called HP. They were not particularly responsive to the
"ticketing" page opened for me on their website, either.

5-6 hours later, after a series of misadventures and mis-
communications caused by an cautious manager in California,
spotty cellphone coverage while underground and receptionists
who don't know HP from anyone else that calls, they allowed
me to open the case with an engineer on the phone.

Five minutes later, they were ready to overnight a new
motherboard to a town 50 miles away. From there on out,
smooth sailing. The rep who came to do the install was
knowledgeable, friendly, very competent and quick, and
had started with DEC and was still with the company. So,
mixed reviews. It's hard to wake the giant, but it's
pretty powerful when awakened.

I've only used a couple of HPs, (350 something I think) but they
seemed about the same. One came with a DOA motherboard, but it
was replaced quickly. Something similar happened on a Dell box.
We have had several of Dell's power supplies go out, but they were
the redundant setups so the servers ran on the rest of them until
spares came.Dell didn't whine about replacing them.

No, I haven't tried to hot-swap the disks. The machines are redundant
web heads and DNS servers which we can bring down without service
down-time. But come to think of it, I have one here in the lab. I'll
see if I can spare a few minutes to test the hot-swap. I'll let you

Besides the ubiquitious Dells and HPs, the ones I am have seen that seem
to be FreeBSD aware are: (Not that Dell and HP are FreeBSD aware)

FreedomTechnologies which used to call itself FreeBSD Systems at:

iX Systems at:

Iron Systems at:

I haven't heard anything bad about any of them.

I run two legacy supermicro boxes and they seem fine. One of the
reasons I use a lot of IBM is that if anything goes wrong they will send
an engineer and fix it reasonably quick, where with DIY I don't have that
kind of comfort.

Hi,

I'm interested to see what servers people use for FreeBSD. I used to
buy the IBM xSeries x306 for firewalls and web servers and the x206 for
low budget file servers, but both aren't being sold anymore. I recently
got a few IBM x3200 and x3550. They are really nicely built and I
hardly have any problems. However, the on-board RAID controllers
(Adaptec AIC-9580W) aren't supported under FreeBSD so I fit them with
3ware 9000 series RAID cards. Although I really like those 3ware cards,
it seems like an extra expense that could be avoided.

What servers do you guys buy and why? I would really like to have the
on-board RAID supported. Do HP servers play well with FreeBSD? If yes,
which models would you recommend?

Many thanks,

Andrew.

I have deployed many types of HP servers with FreeBSD 6.x, so far,
none of them have had any issues (all using HP supplied or onboard
RAID). ML110 (G3 i think), ML150 G3 are my most recent, all the way
back to the original ML530 G1, all no problems.

Check out ixsystems.com. They build and support servers particularly for
FreeBSD (and other lesser unix-like OSes) and are competitively priced. The
pre-sales engineer I talked to definitely had a clue so you should be able
to make a good decision before you give them any money. :)

If you're more of a do-it-yourself person then servers built around
supermicro boards should be reasonably compatible, but you'll want to
verify the network and storage chipsets beforehand if they're onboard.

HP ProLiant servers are generally decent. The onboard RAID is usually
supported by the ciss driver.
