Thanks for the tip - I installed compat4 and lilypond runs fine now.
If I remember correctly the compats were installed by default in earlier
versions weren't they?
Anyway, thanks,

You sound like you're running 5.x. You will need to install the
compat4x distribution to get FreeBSD-4.x compatibility libraries.

You sound lik you should be running 4.x anyway -- 5.x is still a strange
mix of bleeding edge and stable -- but it *is* called -CURRENT for a

Only in the sense that today's compat lib was yesterday's latest libc
version. The default has always been that the compat libraries were
not installed for as long as I've been using FreeBSD -- which is as
far back as FreeBSD-2.2.8

I am running 5.1-release. When I first read your response I thought
'wait a minute - it is a release, so it is stable'. Then I went back and
read the info on the web site about 5.1-release. It is a 'release' based
on the 'current' 5.0-current. I learned that just becuase it says
-release doesn't mean it is based on -stable. Guess I hadn't noticed
that before. Anyway, all is working fine now.

Somehow you managed to install a FreeBSD 4 package onto a FreeBSD 5

correct package from ftp.freebsd.org, or cd into

4.6-stable : libc.so.4 upgrade to libc.so.6 question

2003-07-07 Thread Kris Yates
Hello,

First of all, I dont think I am subscribed to the list. Please send
your replies directly to my email address, as I dont have time to check
the list archives as often as I would like.

I have a 4.6-stable box, which seems to be running fine. I installed a
PHP extension recently, which requires libc.so.6. My box currently uses
libc.so.4. Two questions..

1) When I upgrade from libc.so.4 to libc.so.6, do I need to recompile
anything like mail or web servers? I am running php 4.3.2, Apache 1.3,
the latest stable postfix port and some other basic stuff.

2) I assume I upgrade the glib port to upgrade libc.so, right? What
worries me about just going for it is the following info from
pkg_version -vv | grep lib:

glib-1.2.10_5 needs updating (port has 1.2.10_9)
glib-1.3.1 succeeds port (port has 1.2.10_9)
My last install supercedes the port. I dont remember why or how.
Anyway, I am nervous about breaking something.. it has been awhile. Can
someone show me the light in the way of good advise to safely move to
libc.so.6 from libc.so.4 in relation to info herein? :) Thanks,

Kris

Glib has *nothing* to do with libc.

My last install supercedes the port. I dont remember why or how.
Anyway, I am nervous about breaking something.. it has been awhile. Can
someone show me the light in the way of good advise to safely move to
libc.so.6 from libc.so.4 in relation to info herein? :) Thanks,

The latest version of FreeBSD libc is libc.so.5 (with 5.x). libc.so.6 is
also called glibc-2.x.x, and it's used for Linux. (You can find libc.so.6
in /compat/linux/lib).

You need to enable linux compatibility on your PHP extension.
Run `file /my/extension' -- if it says anything about ELF, run
`brandelf -f 3 /my/extension'. Now running `file /my/extension'
should return something like: [probably not exact]
/my/extension: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (GNU/Linux)...
The important part ^^^

Hope this helps!

where can i get this lib and do i just add it to the ldd path?

JR I may be corrected, but I think librarys work like this:

JR libc.so.4 -- freebsd 4.x
JR libc.so.3 -- freebsd 3.x

JR Where did you get the packages from? There are different packages on the ftp
JR site for different versions of FreeBSD:

JR packages-5-current
JR packages-5.0-current
JR packages-4.0-stable

JR I hope this helps. Alternatively, you could install the compat4x distribution
JR (which makes your system compatible with 4.x binaries), it is also avialable
JR on the ftp sites (/pub/freebsd/releases/i386/5.0-DP1/compat4x)

I got them from the 4.6.2 package ./dir because the packages .tbz were
not working via ftp. Pkg_add on any .tbz was giving broken pipe and
non gzip errorsso i started looking on google and found something
that said the .tbz format was broken and it was ok to use the .tgz
packages from the 4.6.2 rel. It appears that held no validity :)

I have been looking on all the ftp/s and have noticed that 5.0-current
has the .tbz format so i guess there is difference in the 5.0 DP1 and
5.0-current. I was wanting to load current, as current as possible. I
have not found any 5.0 current .iso on the ftps. Are there any .iso's
of this as that would be a easier install.

snapshots.jp.FreeBSD.org is one place where you can find ISO-images
that have been built from -CURRENT.

Please do note though, that CURRENT is the experimental, bleeding-edge
version of FreeBSD. Quoting:
http://www.FreeBSD.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cutting-edge.html

As you read this, keep in mind that FreeBSD-current is the
``bleeding edge'' of FreeBSD development. FreeBSD-current
users are expected to have a high degree of technical skill,
and should be capable of solving difficult system problems on
their own. If you are new to FreeBSD, think twice before
installing it.

Regards,
Giorgos.

Thanks, and your right. As i was reading about the current i decided
to stay away from this. I have about 2yrs BSD experience with open but
still i don't think its a good idea to run current when i am trying to
switch to Free and learn it. Getting up one morning and finding cvs
updated and broke something would be a bad vibe at this stage. Thanks
for your help i greatly appreciate it.
