I'm not entirely sure to be honest. I think it has to do with its
relationship with staroffice, as openoffice started with sun releasing
code for a previous release of staroffice. So i think that is why its
still in java, it would be too much work to re-implement i guess.

Also
(quote)As far as I know, java-coded applications are: slow,

IMHO, Isnt that pretty much openoffice anyway?

There's a thread on this list from yesterday that states plainly that
OpenOffice does not build on FreeBSD 5.3:

"Not on 5-STABLE it doesn't. The "lzip" build tool crashes a couple of
times during the build and the "make install" fails with:

   /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvfb :1001 -screen 0 800x600x24 > /dev/null 2>&1
& echo $! > /usr/ports/editors/openoffice-1.1/work/.Xvfb.pid
   ./install: not found
   *** Error code 127

   Stop in /usr/ports/editors/openoffice-1.1."

However, it does build on 4.11-STABLE.

openoffice install and java JRE on 4.10

2004-07-27 Thread Peter Ryan
Hi Jay,

I am quite confused about this diablo
jre install.

I just tried installing diablo jre 13
from the ports collection, but it tells
me to get the file manually from
freebsdfoundation. The file it wants
me to download is
diablo-latte-1.3.1-0.tar.bz2

I had already put a downloaded file into
the /usr/ports/distfile directory, but its
name was
diablo-jre-1.3.1.0.tgz

These files seem to have the same version
number, but i dont know how to use the one
I have.

Could I ask you - how did you install the
diablo-jre-1.3.1.0.tgz that you downloaded.
I mean, what command or whatever did you use ?

The same question applies to the OpenOffice 1.1.2
install you did after that.

These things dont seem to be in the ports
collection, and I dont know if they are
considered "packages" or something different.

Thanks for your patience - I am still struggling
to come to grips with this environment.

Re: openoffice install and java JRE on 4.10

2004-07-20 Thread Mark Jayson Alvarez
Peter,
JRE is the acronym for Java Runtime Environment.
Because java is an interpreted language, a java
program needs an interpreter to be able to translate a
java program into a machine readable form. Perhaps
some of the openoffice.org's functionality were
develop using java, maybe that's the reason why it
needs a Java Runtime Environment. If you need to know
more about Java, try visiting http://sun.java.com

Java has already been ported to FreeBSD. You can find
one here:
http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/DL/28994/DL

Download the one that looks like this:
diablo-jre-1.3.1.0.tgz

At this very moment while I'm sending this to you,
I'm still completing the download of
openoffice.org-1.1.2. I've already downloaded jre but
still haven't tried it yet.

Best of luck
-jay

Looks like you've already checked all the things I would have suggested.

One option is to download a package off the OpenOffice.org site and install
that ... the only difficulty there is finding the older dependent packages
and
getting them installed first.

I should really do a "make package" on my setup and submit it to the
OpenOffice.org
folks ...

But the OpenOffice Package would still build the Java stuff wouldn't it or
do you think the issue is with the openoffice-1.1 port?

Not too familiar with using FreeBSD on a desktop, mainly used it previously
as an email, file etc, server. Just thought it would be great to start using
it on the Desk since there are so many Open Source Desktop apps coming out.

OpenOffice Install in FreeBSD

Anyone have any luck installing OpenOffice-1.1 for FreeBSD 4.9?
I only get the error below after getting all the bits from the sun site for

In all the post on this topic I could find the recommended solution was the

The -On options modifies how much optimisation gcc should use, e.g. at too
high level gcc might _output_ broken binaries. It shouldn't affect gcc's
abilities to parse and compile code, just that the resulting compiled code
might not work properly. Unless something is completely broken, that is...

Yes, though I guess you will be asked to download some other
things, too. For more information you should have a look at

Where you like. You only have to type pkg_add in the same
directory.

openoffice install

2003-07-06 Thread Dick Hoogendijk
I've downloaded the binaries for OpenOffice (openoffice-1.0.3_2.tgz) but
now I'm not sure how to "install" this tgz file.
Can I use pkg_add openoffice-1.0.3_2 and if so, where do I place the tgz
file?
Or must I use another way?
-(there's no install file in the tgz)-

By crashes, do you mean you get that message, an unrecoverable error
thing? I found that in 4.7, installing it caused no problems. However,
playing with 5.0 DR 2, during install I get two errors--one about a
README --I get that one in 4.7 as well, without it causing problems.
However, in 5.0 there's another error message, (I'm not being more
specific because this was more of a casual attempt on a sacrificial box
to see what would and wouldn't work) and I can't get it to run even as
root.

FWIW, on the successful installs, I more or less followed their Linux
install instructions--I'd download it somewhere, as root, untar it into
/tmp then as user simply do ./install.

Don't know if this helps at all, I'm afraid

So being likewise strapped for diskspace, I used the package also.
It looks nice, but I am having a couple of problems.

I can only run it as root/with sudo. It crashes as soon as it
opens the blank workspace otherwise.

Does anyone know what permissions problems this might indicate?

I think the space requirements for the 'port' are for all the temporary
compile-time files. The pre-built package itself is fairly small. 4 GB is
a *lot* of space though ... X(

Free up more space or use the package.

Wow! Thanks for the pointer - it runs like a top.

The installation was incredibly simple - none of that portupgrade stuff of
waiting eons to install a program.

Just One question for now: I am using Cups and it works fine on all counts.
But the page that OO printed out was pretty awful. I have an Epson Stylus
Color 900 that works very well with Cups and from Win2k through samba. But
I don't know how the OO printing system is organized. It uses the default
printer bit it seems to be using OO drivers and those are way out of date.
The question: what do I do to configure printing from OO for the high
quality that I usually get from other programs?

Thanks for any help.

PJ

Thanks for the tip, Daniel.
I kind-of liked using portupgrade. It seems silly to need that much space
for and installation. And I thought that MicroSlop was overbloated... :((

unless you have fiddled with the ports system, it builds all the
software under /usr/ports. more specifically, in those
/usr/ports/category/port/work/ directories.

that looks like you don't have enough free space (anywhere).

Q: which filesystem got full?
A: the one that is used to build OO, and needs those 4 gigs to
   complete the process.

openoffice install

2002-10-27 Thread info
Does anybody know just what is required to install OpenOffice on FBSD 4.7.
I think their message that 4Gb is required is a little naive just where
should this 4gb be available.
I have a 10gb disk: ad0s1= ad0s1e (/usr/local - 3.7gb); ad0s2=4gb K(but
this includes /,/tmp/,/usr (2.7gb),/var; and ad0s3 = ad0s3e (/usr/ports - 2gb).
This is on a "test" machine. On my work or production machine I can convert
an NTFS slice to ufs, but I still don't know where the 4gb are needed.

In my present attempt to install OO on the test machine, the file system
became full... Som now what?

Thanks for any help.

PJ
