DHCP access

2004-02-20 Thread Jim Pazarena
I have a wireless home network with an 802.11B router which assigns
IPs via DHCP.

what method is appropriate to access one fbsd box from another when
I don't actually know the IP which has been assigned to any given
box.

May sound rookie, but presently I go to each box and determine it's
IP directly and then I know the IP (at least for this session).

There has gotta be a better way.

suggestions please.

 /kernel: RocketPort0 = 16 ports
/kernel: rp0: driver is using old-style compatibility shims

Re: Something is wrong here

2003-08-03 Thread Jim Pazarena
The same thing happens to me occasionally.

My diagnosis is this:
* my MTA (exim) is set to reject junk mail.
* freebsd list gets spammed with junk mail reasonably frequently
* my MTA refuses the junk from the list
* FreeBSD mailing system cuts me off because I have rejected the
junk/spam which
  it is propogating.

--- the list needs to be closed? Or at least it needs to have it's OWN

I put this script in my /usr/local/etc/rc.d directory.
I want it to run last, so I name it 999.notify.sh

do the rc scripts execute the file(s) it finds in an order

FreeBSD 5.3-release (see dmesg below for details)
The problem seems to be with trying to run with 1.5GB vice 512MB of RAM.
The system has not had problems so far when I only leave the 512MB stick
in. When I add the 1GB stick the system will reboot at specific times,
for example, while trying to launch KDE3 or trying to make OpenOffice
(always reboots at Extracting for openoffice-1.1.2-1). I do not see
any panic in the messages log, the system just silently reboots.

I initially installed FreeBSD with only the 512MB stick in.
The memory itself seems fine; memtest86 detects no errors.
I too have a similar problem. I have 7 identical systems. all with
identical MoBo's SCSI hard drives and RAM.
One machine reboots frequently with 5.3 where with 4.9 it never
rebooted. 6 machines are fine. 1 reboots. I changed memory sticks.
(which incidentally always pass an extensive memory test). I even
changed the power supply on the computer.
The last thing I am going to change is the MoBo. Perhaps it has some
timing issue discovered only with 5.3. Luckily when I needed 7 MoBos,
I purchased 8 and have a spare.
This is mystery, because as I said, 4.9 worked fine on this machine.

sound on FreeBSD

I found on BSDForums.org an explanation which describes

need, and then it speaks a bit about compiling directly into
the kernel, but neither example show how to actually
play a sound --any sound-- as a test to see if it works.

A CLI example would be very handy.

/var/log/console.log:
Dec 13 17:39:00 guru kernel: sendmail: illegal option -- L
I've traced this down to the sendmail_msp_queue_enable variable in
/etc/rc.conf. If set to yes, that invokes sendmail with the -L option.
SENDMAIL=NONE #check sendmail documentation for proper line

However, this is deprecated, and it is recommended that you use:
sendmail_enable=NO
sendmail_outbound_enable=NO
sendmail_submit_enable=NO
sendmail_msp_queue_enable=NO
if you look in /etc/defaults/rc.conf
you find the -L flags for sendmail in:
rc.conf:sendmail_flags=-L sm-mta -bd -q30m # Flags to sendmail (as a
server)
rc.conf:sendmail_submit_flags=-L sm-mta -bd -q30m
-ODaemonPortOptions=Addr=localhost
rc.conf:sendmail_outbound_flags=-L sm-queue -q30m # Flags to
sendmail (outbound only)
rc.conf:sendmail_msp_queue_flags=-L sm-msp-queue -Ac -q30m
one would think, or expect, that if you disable sendmail using
SENDMAIL_ENABLE=NONE, that NONE sendmail activity would be
triggered.
This seemed to be the way it worked in FreeBSD 4.XX, and altho we
can live with these changes for 5.XX, is there any where that we
can read the reasoning for making such a change?
Several things changed such as named being jailed, and this sendmail
NONE/NO change. It would be nice to be able to read the reasoning
for such changes.

The main reason is, for example, if you update your non-base shell

keep root's shell default, and enable your toor user.

7.1 release / apache22 / php5

2009-01-05 Thread Jim Pazarena

for some odd reason, with this latest install (7.1), apache22 complains that it
cannot find libphp5.so
I usually compile php5 from ports
and apache22 from ports
after I think about it, I have never actually placed libphp5.so anywhere. I am
not even sure who/what
causes php5 module to be added to /usr/local/libexec/apache22/libphp5.so
it's present on my 7.0 system, and missing on my 7.1 system.
advice would be much appreciated.

Do you have something like:

LoadModule php5_modulelibexec/apache22/libphp5.so

in /usr/local/etc/apache22/httpd.conf ? If not, that's the likely culprit.

You'd also need the IfModule mod_php5.c ... /IfModule block in
there as well (or in an included file).

Regards,
Josh

the httpd config file isn't the issue. it hasn't changed in a few years. yes,
I do have the correct entries.

what I do NOT have is the actual libphp5.so library file! it doesn't exist on
my system,
so apache complains that it can't open it.

The reason I ask, is that I accidentally installed routed, and it

So did this halt my system because I had no configuration file, or

syslogd and pipe to email

I would like to email some kernel.warning messages
to myself via the pipe action in syslog.conf, but I'm
getting hung up on the fact that the pipe stays open
(unless I HUP syslogd).

The man page suggests that a script wrapper can be
written to capture one line output and exit, but I wonder
if there is any other method, such as an option/flag
I am missing to terminate the pipe after, say, 30 seconds?
I would rather have a script which waits at least 30 seconds
before terminating rather than after one line, because some
of the records I am looking for are multi-line, and I'm not
sure if a script can be made to timeout.

kde4 on 8.3 and laptop

I had kde3 running just fine on 8.2 on my laptop.

I have now installed 8.3 -and- kde4 on my laptop, and the kde system

when I type kdm (which is at /usr/local/kde4/bin/kdm)
I get the expected login screen (however the mouse dies), and after I login,
all I get is a small cli window in the top left corner. The mouse has gone
dead, and the keyboard doesn't respond, altho there is a prompt in the cli
window.

All I can do at this point is hold the power button in to reboot.
If I do not try running kdm, the normal cli works 100%, the ethernet works,
and the mouse always seems alive (altho in the cli the mouse is of no value).

Suggestions would be very appreciated.

v6 speed compared to previous versions

When I switched to 6.0, then 6.1, it was noticed by most of my clients
that my php/mysql/apache system slowed down a fair bit compared to previous

I always like to be on the bleeding edge of FreeBSD, but the performance
hit is being commented about by my (few) mysql/php clients.

I've seen the trolls of past about speed and previous versions, and I
would really be interested to hear the actual truth about 6.XX speed.
It is my understanding that 6.XX is more optimized for multi-processors,
and that for a single processor, 5.XX (or even 4.XX) outperforms 6.XX.

Would someone please outline the choices/drawbacks/concerns of even
considering going back a series?

comtrol rocketport 16 PCI

2005-08-18 Thread Jim Pazarena

the 5.4 kernel appears to support rocketport simply by including
device rp in the kernel compile, after which devices like:

/dev/ttyR[0-9a-f]
/dev/ttyiR[0-9a-f]
/dev/ttylR[0-9a-f]
/dev/cuaR[0-9a-f]
/dev/cuaiR[0-9a-f]
/dev/cualR[0-9a-f]

get created.

would someone please advise the purpose of the iR lR devices?

also, comtrol has some kind of support for the 5 kernel on their
ftp site; with a few instructions on how to remove some existing
files, add some of theirs, and re-compile the kernel.
their instructions suggest that ports are: /dev/ttyC* and /dev/cuaC*

when following _their_ instructions, a fresh kernel compile crashes.
I see someone posted a question WRT the compile crash back in 1/24/05.
there were no responses.

I would like to confirm that the existing FreeBSD settings for rocketport
support do indeed work, and that it isn't necessary to go thru comtrol's
compilation routine.

proper way to setup laptop with apache22

2010-09-04 Thread Jim Pazarena

I'm setting up a laptop with apache, just to play, basically.

But apache doesn't like the fact that it can't resolve the
lappy's hostname to an IP number and it will not load. The laptop
gets its IP # via DHCP so it changes at various locations.

I could use the localhost name IP #, which should work.

My laptop is named 'laptop' (laptop.mydomain.com)

Is there a way to have the system utilize it's assigned IP #?
Or do I have to change my apache config to localhost ?

thanks.

NcFTPd on 9.1 64-bit

2013-01-27 Thread Jim Pazarena

I have found that on the two machines which I installed 9.1 on, NcFTPd
fails system logins for non-root attempts with Password wrong for user
 from 192.168.1.51

These are logins which previously on 9.0 worked as expected, and now
fail on 9.1.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions? Thanks!

No one has answered on this question, and supp...@ncftp.com
is also silent.

I *do* see an error go by during boot, which states
unable to open /etc/auth.conf

FreeBSD 9.1 does not HAVE auth.conf (9.0 DOES)

failing getting NcFTPd working, what is the next ftpd recommended ?

The creator of NcFTPd (Mike Gleason) provided me a 9.1 version,
and it works as expected. Kudos to Mike.

sleepycat db VS MySQL or postgres

2013-07-01 Thread Jim Pazarena

I have a rather extensive series of databases created and in use all
with the very old sleepycat db3. I believe in the addage don't fix
what ain't broken, but in the case of db3, it IS broken and my db
files get corrupted on occasion.

I could move to db5 or db6 OR MySQL, or even postgres.

I use simple primary key files, most entries are added from a CLI
or termcap/curses screen. Some programatically. With about the same
number of sequential dumps vs indexed random reads.

I have no experience with the c interface for postgres or mysql, but
also, do not know how much the c interface has changed for sleepycat
5/6 compared to the c interface for db3, which I understand quite well.
So I am prepared for a learning curve irrespective of which platform
I select. Records do not exceed much more than 10-20,000, with key sizes
not much wider than 16 bytes (ipv4), 13 (mac), 32 (ipv6). And various
smaller key sizes.

Suggestions would be very much appreciated.
