I don't understand, why would you see csh if you login as toor

It has no shell in the /etc/passwd entry by default.
Maybe it then defaults to csh (which is really tcsh) if nothing
else is given.

It defaults to sh

Anyway, I prefer tcsh, but if the OP just has to have it bash,
it is easy to do.

I actually value my ignorance of tcsh, it prevents me doing anything
ambitious if I forget where I am. Explicitly selecting another shell is
like a safety-catch. And tsch is fairly friendly without knowing much
about it.

All the OP has to do is install bash from /usr/ports/shells/bash and
then edit /etc/passwd to change the last field for toor - after the

last colon - to point to where it installs bash (/usr/local/bin/bash
maybe) and then it should all be fine.

Yes , that's what it's for.

Hey look,
BASH is not a UNIX shell.
BASH occurred with Linux then carried over into FreeBSD.
While it has some advantages, it is still a bastard.

UNIX is written in C

Want the best you can get? Use tcsh as a shell and let the linux

Ok, OK!!!
The troll is coming out from under the bridge...

First of all, the worst of humanoid units sometimes comes up with
valuable quotes; that warrant repeating.
By contrast, what most perceive as the best of humanoid units seldom
utter profound and/or timeless sayings.

The only thing men learn from history, is that men never learn from
history.

A quote from , someone.

If some thin-skinned, limp-wristed, left-handed, intellectual wanna-be's
whine about the name Hitler on ANY website, then let them whine!

Personally, I hardly ever use quotes from Hitler when illustrating
points - but that doesn't mean that any of his material wasn't relevant,
or isn't relevant today.
Usually, I steer toward Nietzsche when looking for applicable quotes
for modern times.
But then, (and I speak from sad experience with this) the Holy Bible
offends nearly everyone these days.
Try quoting from the prophet Jeremiah, and see how many people tell you
to shut up.

Hitler, Jeremiah, Hosea, Amos, Ruckman...it doesn't matter who you
quote, or even mention; someone is going to be offended.

I say, Three Cheers for the FreeBSD team! No Guts, No Glory.

Hi Branko!

I guess it's like comparing an Alsatian [FreeBSD] to a Spaniel

NetBSD is a cat and Windows is a fish.

Feel free to play with my sophisticated model of operating system

Maybe I shouldn't have compared FreeBSD to a dog. Whoops. Sorry all.

If netbsd is a cat, and oh!ess!ten is variously a panther, tiger,

FreeBSD is an F-4 Phantom.
Mac is a P-38 Trainer.
Windows is a DC-10.

Dell Inspiron 1501 Express PCI slot

2007-05-16 Thread Old Ranger

Greetings to all,
Fed Ex delivered a Wistron Neweb CM9 Mini-PCI wireless nic to me today,
with Atheros chipset.

Made me very happy indeed!

U, now I find that it won't fit in the PCI slot in my Dell Inspiron
1501 because Dell no longer uses standard sized PCI slots.

They call them Express PCI slots.

My question is this: Does anyone know of an adapter that will mate the
one to the other?

Am I SOL?

Greetings,
I agree with Bill.
Get yourself a computer comparable to the one you wish to make the
real install on, and go for it.
That way, WHEN you make boo-boos, it won't cost you anything but time.
You'll be glad you did.
DO NOT make your first install on the critical machine

Just some advice.

Advice please

2006-11-22 Thread Old Ranger
Hello to all,
I just ordered DSL from my phone service (and ISP) provider.
I have a Dell dual core laptop enroute, with extras.

The advice I'd like, is some do's and don'ts when switching from
dial-up to DSL with FreeBSD.

What are the pitfalls? I'd like to avoid as many as possible.

Greetings,
I recently got myself a Dell Inspiron 1501 with AMD dual core processor.
Split HDD in half, XPPRO on one side, FreeBSD 6.1 on the other side.
Only been tweaking with it for a couple of days now.
Several issues seem to be on the plate.
One is accessing the USB floppy drive.
??? 5 USB ports showing in dmesg, but none actually mount the drive
when I attempt mount_msdosfs /dev/ /mnt ??

Very happy otherwise.

DSL modem should be coming UPS in the next couple of days.
At THAT time, I'm sure I'll have some more questions and comments.

Thanks for listening, and any suggestions on the USB floppy drive access.

If your kernel is called MYKERNEL, yes, just add
options SMP

to the file and then
cd /usr/src ; make buildkernel
make installkernel

and reboot.

Hello,
I just got through this same problem myself.
If I may, allow me to add this suggestion.

Once you cp your own copy of GENERIC kernel;
cd to /usr/src
make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_NAME
make installkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_NAME

Make sure that the KERNCONF is in UPPERCASE! Otherwise it will default
to GENERIC. Trust me on this one.

umass external usb floppy devices

2006-12-05 Thread Old Ranger

Greetings to all this morning,
After several days of trying, reading, tweaking, and cursing..
I read up on supported umass usb devices supported by FreeBSD 6.1.
The only umass usb external floppy drive I see in that list is a
Panasonic external floppy.

I have a TEAC FD-05PUB USB device.

I can mount this device using mount_msdosfs /dev/da0 /mnt no problem.

I can cd to this device, and ls and read the contents thereof.

However, whenever I try to write to this device, I get device busy,
among other messages which I cannot reproduce at the moment, because
this is a dual boot machine and I'm on the other side of the HDD now.

Does anyone know if there is a tweak, or a hack to get around this write
problem with TEAC umass usb floppy drives?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the horrible formatting, but for reasons beyond my control, I
only have access to Microsoft Outlook right now. It appears no one has
answered you yet, so, to alleviate your fears, yes, unless you've changed
the kernel in any way (and it sounds like you haven't), a simple make
buildkernel and make installkernel should work just fine. Reboot
afterwards, and you should be running the new kernel. The only reason you
would *need* to make a change would be if you're running dual processors or
you need to customize the kernel for performance reasons. Otherwise the
 GENERIC kernel will suffice.

Thank you!
Somehow, I got through it today, with SMP working too!

I had a little problem with mergemaster, after buildworld, which had a couple
of problems that I got around with the make -k argument.
Some things didn't get built.

Mergemaster rejected some files - /var/tmp/temproot/etc/rc.d/jail
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/ssh/ssh_config
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/ssh/sshd.config
/var/tmp/temproot/etc/motd

I elected to merge by hand, just to coplete the process.
Now I'll have to learn what it means to merge by hand.

Thanks to all who responded with advice and insights.

I have now a working amd64x2 kernel and a partially built, installed, and
merged world.

There are still some strange messages appearing at boot time.

That's for another day.
