I actually value my ignorance of tcsh, it prevents me doing anything ambitious if I forget where I am. Explicitly selecting another shell is like a safety-catch. All the OP has to do is install bash from /usr/ports/shells/bash and then edit /etc/passwd to change the last field for toor - after the last colon - to point to where it installs bash (/usr/local/bin/bash maybe) and then it should all be fine. Usually, I steer toward Nietzsche when looking for applicable quotes for modern times. But then, (and I speak from sad experience with this) the Holy Bible offends nearly everyone these days. Try quoting from the prophet Jeremiah, and see how many people tell you to shut up. Dell Inspiron 1501 Express PCI slot
Greetings to all, Fed Ex delivered a Wistron Neweb CM9 Mini-PCI wireless nic to me today, with Atheros chipset. Made me very happy indeed! U, now I find that it won't fit in the PCI slot in my Dell Inspiron 1501 because Dell no longer uses standard sized PCI slots. They call them Express PCI slots. My question is this: Does anyone know of an adapter that will mate the one to the other? -OR- Am I SOL? Sincerely, Z. Greetings, I agree with Bill. Get yourself a computer comparable to the one you wish to make the real install on, and go for it. That way, WHEN you make boo-boos, it won't cost you anything but time. You'll be glad you did. DO NOT make your first install on the critical machine Just some advice. :-) ### Pastor Z. Hello to all, I just ordered DSL from my phone service (and ISP) provider. I have a Dell dual core laptop enroute, with extras. The advice I'd like, is some do's and don'ts when switching from dial-up to DSL with FreeBSD. What are the pitfalls? I'd like to avoid as many as possible. Regards, ### Pastor Z. umass external usb floppy devices
Greetings to all this morning, After several days of trying, reading, tweaking, and cursing.. I read up on supported umass usb devices supported by FreeBSD 6.1. The only umass usb external floppy drive I see in that list is a Panasonic external floppy. I have a TEAC FD-05PUB USB device. I can mount this device using mount_msdosfs /dev/da0 /mnt no problem. I can cd to this device, and ls and read the contents thereof. However, whenever I try to write to this device, I get device busy, among other messages which I cannot reproduce at the moment, because this is a dual boot machine and I'm on the other side of the HDD now. Does anyone know if there is a tweak, or a hack to get around this write problem with TEAC umass usb floppy drives? Thanks in advance. -- Rev. Z. It appears no one has answered you yet, so, to alleviate your fears, yes, unless you've changed the kernel in any way (and it sounds like you haven't), a simple make buildkernel and make installkernel should work just fine. Reboot afterwards, and you should be running the new kernel. The only reason you would *need* to make a change would be if you're running dual processors or you need to customize the kernel for performance reasons. Otherwise the GENERIC kernel will suffice. Paul Schmehl ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Senior Information Security Analyst University of Texas at Dallas http://www.utdallas.edu/ir/security/ Thank you! Somehow, I got through it today, with SMP working too! I had a little problem with mergemaster, after buildworld, which had a couple of problems that I got around with the make -k argument. Some things didn't get built. Mergemaster rejected some files - /var/tmp/temproot/etc/rc.d/jail /var/tmp/temproot/etc/ssh/ssh_config /var/tmp/temproot/etc/ssh/sshd.config /var/tmp/temproot/etc/motd I elected to merge by hand, just to coplete the process. Now I'll have to learn what it means to merge by hand. Thanks to all who responded with advice and insights. I have now a working amd64x2 kernel and a partially built, installed, and merged world. There are still some strange messages appearing at boot time. That's for another day. Z.
