Re: [Freedos-user] Question about xFDisk and a multiboot setup
I think I have managed to get both MSDos and Freedos though currently I cannot boot into freedos Trying to find a version of Linux that I like, I will probably pick Manjaro XFCE, that seems to run the best on that laptop and have access to the stuff I need/want which is mostly Virtual Box, and Visual Studio Code It still boots into MS Dos and Linux can see all the partitions I plan to create a swap dir at the end of the free space and then install linux into what is remaining. I am hoping that it will see the other distros and install grub properly, to boot into any of the goodness. At the least I expect that it will do a dual boot with MSDos and Linux, and I think I can massage grub to do the rest for me once I learn how. Re: [Freedos-user] Question about xFDisk and a multiboot setup
I probably am that guy. I couldn't post in groups on FB for a couple of days. and I am itching to do something. LOL. Thanks for the links... As soon as I find a linux distro that I like that works on the laptop I will start looking at them in more detail. I think it would be fun to write something that looks like Windows 3.11 maybe even be able to run apps written for it. DESQview/X could run both if I could get something going that I have always thought that if xserver and a wm/desktop could be ported from linux to freedos that were small enough, then perhaps others would port apps as well. beyond the standard minefield, wordpad etc clones the other "desktops" like seal, opengem. etc. with those they never seemed to catch on, and most of them barely function when I run them. xvesa, wxwidgets, nano-x / microxwindows etc I don't really know how all of the linux windowing system works yet. And really the last time I messed with linux, it was zipslack on jaz drives was the thing. I even have a copy of dragonlinux (the linux that installed on a dos partition not a different partition) I still have a bunch of books in the closet for programming windows 3.11 and dos. Never did much win 95 came out shortly (like a couple of years) after I got started. I'll find something simpler freedos related to cut my dos programmer teeth on. Probably... :) Adam On Mon, Mar 13, 2023 at 6:24 AM Liam Proven wrote: > On Thu, 9 Mar 2023 at 15:18, usul wrote: > > > > Why? cause I always get asked... > > Ah, you are the same person who asked on the Facebook FreeDOS group? > > > Because I want to code some stuff for windows 3.11 last time I did I was > working in VB 3 lol, > > run XAppeal and DESQview/X 2.1 and cause if they can do it see If I can > port a minimal xserver to FreeDos for fun. Re: [Freedos-user] Question about xFDisk and a multiboot setup
I am no longer an experienced DOS user. I am relearning. And only understood half of what you said. Guess I have gotten old and lazy. and even back in the day I just went right to windows, to work in VB 3. I think 95 came out a year after I really got my start. Plus I really want them to be separate. I wish I knew how to do grub better but that xFDisk seems like it would do the trick. I have GParted and could use that to do all the Partitioning and hiding but I don't see that it has a way to install and setup grub, Unless someone says there are issues with xFDisk I'll try that. Worst thing that could happen is that I have to start over again. [Freedos-user] Question about xFDisk and a multiboot setup
Was there a reason this doesn't seem to be included on the usb installer (if it is I can't find it) I and trying to get a multiboot setup 1. MSDOS 6.22 + Win 3.11 2. FreeDos 1.3 3. I was going to do XP but annoying so no. (it dumped on drive "E", getting networking and drivers was a damn pain so bleh I won't be using it much anyway. 4. And a Older laptop friendly Linux that runs on XFCE and https://b00merang.weebly.com/windows-311.html This is going on a Dell Latitude D520 And when I go to install FreeDos on a partition from the USB Installer iso. It really, really wants to overwrite the MSDOS So I was thinking that I could.. Install MSDOS Boot with FreeDos, run xFdisk , mark the msdos drive as hidden, and install a bootloader like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvI8Q0uaihI=7s_channel=i80386sx But if it wasn't added I am wondering if it is bad, or just not maintained. I might be able to do this with the live gparted CD, but I have never installed grub manually before. So maybe I do the MSDOS install Create and format a partition for FreeDos Install Linux and fix the grub to then do freedos Why? cause I always get asked... Because I want to code some stuff for windows 3.11 last time I did I was working in VB 3 lol, run XAppeal and DESQview/X 2.1 and cause if they can do it see If I can port a minimal xserver to FreeDos for fun. And I really don't want to do any of that in a VM. Adam ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

Re: [Freedos-user] Greetings
Apparently I purged XP disks long ago. :( Laptop has Windows 10 is on it. And it is awful LOL. Even though most of the minimalist linux live I have tested also dogged a bit. I might install suse with xcfe on it. That seemed to run the best. Though I have never done any linux development. and the last time I really used it, ZipSlack and Mandrake were still a thing. :) But I really wanted to putz the win 3.11 and DESQview/X 2.1 compatibility. This guy mentioned... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfpizh02C2U_channel=MartinISDN So I would really like to try them all native. And is coding on a VM or DosBox etc really coding it native? I dunno. :) Half the fun I guess is re-learning all this stuff. I also saw a video where someone loaded 3.11 on Freedos. :) I dunno. Been programming for 30 years, hate my job and have 13 years to go. Have to find something to respark my interest in programming in spite of where I work. LOL I bought a supposed legal copy of XP from ebay. Might do the same with MS DOs 6.22 and Windows 3.1 but that would mean I have to get a usb floppy drive as I no longer have one. :P I did find a copy of "Undocumented Dos: A Programmer's Guide" https://biblio.co.nz/9780201632873 and a bunch of my old C\C++ books. So as soon as I get the items loaded this higher memory and 32 dos extender stuff remembered and djgpp or w/e up and running the better. So I was digging through my old "stuff" and found some of my old cds and my Dell Latitude D520 laptop. And I got all nostalgic . I got my start with a 486 DX 8 mgs of Ram. I mostly did Visual Basic 3.0 programming to start after I finished college. VBA/ MS Access then to Dot Net. I can read C / C++ but never really did anything with it. So I thought it would be cool to mess around with it again So I plan to multiboot on the laptop Linux Dos 6.22 / Windows 3.11 and FreeDos Is there an 'Order that this would need to be done in? Any Recommendations? I found on those old cds copies of desQview/X 2.1 and XAppeal (and if they could port it I might be able to) and DragonLinux which runs on UMSDOS so install on the same partition. Create a zip file and rename it, that should allow you to put them all in a single file. i.e.hobo.zip.remove or hobo.change :) On Wed, Feb 24, 2010 at 2:49 PM, kurt godel wb2...@gmail.com wrote: Mateusz, I put it on my little freebie site: www.dosoid.bravehost.com. The good news is that it contains two files, one an empty textfile and the other a simple little bat; so simple, in fact, the instruction for it is contained in a reminder on the single webpage!!. Other than that, the documentation, as well as the source code is in the file: 'x.txt', and although an executable is supplied, you can recompile it out-of-the-box using DJGPP; I strongly suggest using 'gcc' rather than 'g++'. I will try to nest multiple screens, but want to keep the level of such to a minimum(closer to dos). This is a hobby for me, and so it took two months instead of two weeks!. Finally, I am thinking of a linux version, which for the most part is doable, except for the interupts(!), which seem to be required(as in dos) for the mouse event handler. Does freedos/fat/dos store the files date and time information properly. Perhaps we could go by newer file instead of messages. The newer version of something may have less after some cleanup. Re: [Freedos-user] Installing programs on FreeDOS v1.1
Utilities too late the party? Because I think the utilities and freedos core should be separated. Here is one reason why. Say I am working on a program that I want to be dos compatible. any Dos and not just free dos, or I need to test the compatibility. C:\FDOS C:\MSDOS etc and this could be done with a simple batch menu. But I may want to use things that are in the freedos bin direcory but since they are mixed in with the standard freedos applications I have to manual type in the whole path to use them because the aren't separated. as for package determination, yes its an extra step but I think its the right one to make. is this core or not not too hard of a question. :) if everything executable in mixed together it becomes difficult to manage. I know it more work but sometimes more work is required. I have only submitted one package so far, but I plan to do a whole lot more. just my .02 cents worth. usul -- ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
Re: [Freedos-user] What about changing our packaging style for v1.1?
Hi If putting them into a single zip forces that the sources are installed everytime. I would disagree. Its an extra step for the end user to manually delete them. what if this is being used in an embedded environment where space is premium. Not all users of dos are technical like us, the more steps that you ad the more cumbersome it becomes. and to be honest, even I would not want the sources for 80%, the other 20% would be temporary. if there was a way to automate the removal of the directory or not create them that would work. usul -- ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

Re: [Freedos-user] patents - was: LFN in FreeDOS kernel? - was: aimed compatibility?
There is always another way to do it. receiving a long file name in a long file name format; storing the received long file name in a first file entry of the tree structure along with a file storage indicator indicating the location of the file in the memory; automatically generating a short file name in a short file name format; and storing the generated short file name in a second file entry of the tree structure along with the file storage indicator indicating the location of the file in the memory, the second file entry being different from the first file entry; and now I dont understand legalees but I speak geek this is talking about storing values in tree, I am assuming thats is in the FAT itself So why cant we just create a database/table - file that allows lookup in a second area, either a file on the hard drive or a separate partition. then based on the file/directory ID and store that in the database table completely separate from the FAT if we don't touch fat it should be fine. If we are using a different method and system we are safe. in that database/table we could also add fields for whatever we want. could even extend it to give linux like attributes. to help with porting etc then in the kernal FAT code go lookup values in that table intercept calls and redirect them to and from our storage. instead of FAT. if we need to sync them make that a separate TSR and keep it out of the Kernel. same result different method. I could be way off base here not knowing DOS programming nor legaleese. But still different method and system is still different. I would expect this type of thinking to defeat the patent. So educate me why am I wrong. :) -- ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user
Re: [Freedos-user] patents - was: LFN in FreeDOS kernel? - was: aimed compatibility?
Whenever theoretically someone would claim you are violating our patents, stop it for we sue you it questionable if the sabre rattle was already enough for the extortion and if ever a court would have the chance to judge. I would stand my ground if I knew that I took the time to avoid the patent do the work correctly. Even if there were no help for legal funds from the Open Source Community If I can read a manual, I could read an appeal and file it. I see to many people tuck tail and run at the saber rattling. In the US a LLC. would protect from any personal liability. Not that they come after the programmers anyway. Its the end users they go after. I am thinking though since the GPL is a way to turn the patent system vs itself to protect open source. There has to be a way to also protect the liability of developers and end users as well. Like the licence to use the software turns the liability of the debt to something not tied to anyone and which owns nothing. IDK something. RE: [Freedos-user] test boot floppy
If you go to the following ling there is a zip file http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/1disk/ bootfd/ 1) unzip the file some place like c:\bootfd 2) insert diskette in drive A: 3) run install.bat script 4) Copy you program and set it up as you would normally. Let me know if you need any more assistance. The freedos file I have is about 20meg in size and there is a lot of talk of 'gui' that I do not need, what should I use to make a bootfloppy just for a test please. The computer I use for dos7 is a pentium 120mhz only a hard drive and not cdrom drive, the files I have has been taken from a cdrom, using a 'backpack' external drive connected to the paralel port. The dates are mostly 2004 and one 2005. I did look for a 'makefloppy' file but did not see one. RE: [Freedos-user] Problems with floppy disk installation
I had a lot of the same kind of messages with The cd install which is built on the disks imagine. Keep trying menu options combinations, eventually I got through them And it installed. I can't remember which menu it was exactly But I think it was the 3rd once (including my cd install) So it Might only be your second. NOTE: no matter what I did to install VIM it didn't work And it hung up the install process. Skip it copy the file later. I know this probably isn't much help. LOL. Good luck! I am installing onto a Toshiba Libretto 110CT which only has a floppy drive attachment. The boot disk works just fine and it even went so far as to properly format the hard drive and create a DOS partition. It also seems to have done a proper installation of a barebones bootable DOS on the hard drive. So far, so good. However, running the installer on the boot disk (which will presumably prompt for the other installer disks so I can get more robust functionality) produces a full page of text that goes by far too quickly to read. The following screen says that some files are missing and aborts the installation. Presumably the installer is referring to itself, not my hard drive. Anyone have any ideas, or is the current floppy installer beta known to have this issue?
