Actually ... Looking for the company that sold this particular
one ... see if there is a Lifetime Warranty ...

*

My QS is still hanging up with a blue screen on occasion and I got a
kp when trying to Restart after RAM adjustments.

I'm suspecting my ATI Radeon 9800Pro I got a few months ago from OWC.
The power cable was flaky, and it had looked re-wrapped. I never got
the Demo's to work, and they said ATI Demos rarely work ... even on PCs.

Anyway ... RAM problems out of the way ... what might I show from the
logs / test next?

From Jonas - ibook Clamshell randomly freezing??

2008-11-24 Thread jonas ulrich
I got a 366MHZ clamshell from someone for $3!! (I gave him a keyboard i
got for $3). He said it kept freezing up. the second ram chip was loose so i
reseted it and was able to install 10.2 on it without a glitch! Well... it
started freezing up. I put 10.3 on it, i cleaned out the ram slot, replaced
the ram chip. No luck. Sometimes it will run fine with no problems. Most of
the time in safe boot. I have run Rember to test the ram and it came out
fine. It has 64MB built in ram and an extra 256MB chip. Ideas?

I surrender ...

Ran Rember 0.3.4b (latest) when problems started happening again ...
it verifies I had a bad RAM Stick. Rember stopped so quickly, I
didn't think it was even running under Leopard ...

Anybody recognize the company that sells this one?
Sticker Label: 512MB Q8, PC133U-333-542-Z, (Chips have 0132NT Seitec,
PM72V56841CT-6, 8330124)

my QS Dual 1GHz I bought on eBay in July 2006 ... so I'm asking the
Seller if he has any info.

Thanks for pointing me to the Evil RAM possibility.

Just didn't want to accept it ...

After replacing a "Flaky Airlink3026 USB2 WAN"
Casting Unwarranted Suspicion on Sonnet's Tango FW/USB PCI Card
Cussing Musicians's M-Audio's 2496 Delta PCI Card

Everyone else was evidently Innocent Bystanders.

Evil RAM.

Re: Networking

2008-11-24 Thread jonas ulrich
I think that you still have to have sharing enabled on the pc. You should be
able to see it from your mac though either way. I was at an airport and i
had my powerbook with me so i enabled windows sharing and looked under
network and found lots of computers so i started clicking on them and found
a pc without a password! I was able to look through everything on the
computer from my laptop. it was awsome.

There are numerous DP upgrades for that one, both third party made for
it, and ones that shipped from Apple (although those were only ever
dual 500's iirc), whether they're cost-effective is an entirely
different subject.

A single 1Ghz upgrade for that is cheap, and quite effective. I have
the GigEthernet Mac (same as Sawtooth but faster ethernet and another
few minor diffs) with a OWC 1Gig upgrade in mine and it's still quite
serviceable. A faster video card than the stock is almost as good an
upgrade, though. I have a ATI Radeon 9000 in mine (iirc...their low

Depending on the OS version, a lot. OS X itself makes good use of DP
architectures.

That said, any program that crunches that hard probably is better
served by saving your money for a newer, faster Mac.

Any Firewire drive and I'm pretty sure with your Mac, any USB drive is
bootable. (albeit slowly)

They will not specify this on the box, because they're all completely
Windows-centric in their documentation, and you have to reformat the
drive using Disk Utility to be HFS+ before it's bootable, but all the
external drives that Staples or Best Buy can boot any modern mac.

Re: Cloning

2008-11-24 Thread Anne Keller-Smith

Hiya ~

But I need to have a bootable external drive to create a bootable
system, correct? This I do not yet have.

I would prolly actually have to seek out such, since there weren't any
at the local Staples or Best Buy. I don't configure much, so am
thinking do an archive and install on the system, add back the files
from one of the non-bootables and downloaded apps and I'm ready to go,
more or less. Oh, yes, add back the fonts.

My Mac works so well I haven't yet had time to test this theory. It's a
2001 Mac purchased in 2002, so have had for six years and it just works
day in day out. I love my Mac.

XLR8 MACh Speed Control 3.4.2 provides thermal monitoring for certain
brands of (Motorola) PowerPC G4s ("750-7410"), and provides a
temperature reading (currently at 24°C).

I'm looking for more information.

You can see more about it on Daystar's site:

http://daystar-store.com/machspeedcontrol-osxandos9combo.aspx

I believe the thermal monitoring is working on my cpu ("PowerPC 7400
(Max) v2.6").

Not certain, though.

the export works singly or in batches and better than Powerpoint for

For those interested, I'm monitoring the behavior of my oc'd system
as we have to do, to determine if there are any instability issues.
So far it looks good.

Just a brief note on temperature - since that is a major
consideration in over clocking.

Early this morning, a Cold Boot in my house where it was a cold 60°F,
when first on, XLR8 MSC measured the lowest yet of 20°C. It's now
back up to 28°C.

Still curious if anyone has info on thermal monitoring of the
"PowerPC G4 7400 (Max) v2.6" cpu.

Google'ing was somewhat inconclusive. I am attempting to contact
Motorola for info on their PowerPC G4s.

I have a SCSI drive connected to an ATTO PCI Express PSC and it
requires an Active Terminator on the SCSI ribbon.

Yours require that? Active internal termination? Is it still good?
Mine lights up when the the system is on.

For SCSI problems, you might check with, as if you wanted to buy
something (like another Terminator):
http://www.mcpb.com/

Give them all your system details along with the SCSI setup, and
they'll recommend what you need. You can then run through a check of
your SCSI line.

They helped me get my 80 to 68 pin type scsi drive going with these
two adapter and terminator items:
SCA2 8OPin To 68Pin LVD Rated ADAPTER
TMA-I3HDB-68F

Not the exact same problem ... but SCSI related just the same. Still
works.

You are probably going to have to ask a group which knows more about
Vista. I would not bother with IP Release/Renew. It is more a Vista
issue than a network issue. As long as you are on the same network and
the same workgroup you SHOULD see the other computers in that group and
on that network. Because you cannot, it is something specific to Vista,
and those computers running Vista. When you say you have sharing turned
on, is that on the Vista computer? If not, it has to be enabled there
as well. Peace, Dennis in Victoria

Re: Mac Help gone?

2008-11-24 Thread iWill

I had this happen to me once, and I tried the steps that Kris mentions
to no avail.

This tip ended up sorting things out for me:

Networking

2008-11-24 Thread Norm Rowe

OS 10.5.5 on PPC mac. Have a Compaq Laptop with win vista. I know but my
wife loves windoz. The lap top was sent in for repairs and came back
with Vista reloaded and all her stuff gone. I use to be able to access
her pc from my mac. Found that the ip address was changed. Under network
her pc does not show up. If I click on "connect to" with the new ip
address I'm asked for administrator user name and password. Nothing I
put in works. I do not know much about vista. Any one know how to set
this up?
The use of no password does not work. I use to see my son in laws pc and
the neighbors. I see nothing now. I had some other problems so I did a
fresh install of OS 10.5.5 and do not know if this messed up something.
I have renewed the dhcp lease several times in network the system
prefs. I do have work group listed and and the correct dns number. I
have sharing turned on and the firewall set to accept all incoming. Any
other ideas?

I have used Stellar Phoenix Mac data recovery software to recover my
lost data. This software demo version is free in which I have see the
preview of my lost mac data. Then I decide to purchase the full
version to recover my data. It recovers almost all the lost data.

Highlight any single .html file in Finder and right-click (Cmd-click);
OR go to File>Get Info; OR keyboard command Cmd-I. In the Get Into
window, find the "Open with:" area and select BBEdit and then hit the
"Change All..." button.

Repeat this for a single .php file. Now the icons should eventually
switch to the correct BBEdit icons and they will all open in BBEdit
rather than Safari.

Finder icons...

2008-11-24 Thread dorayme

Hi there everyone!

Could you please remind me what needs to be done in Tiger to
make .html and .php files show with BBEdit icons rather than Safari
ones (whether or not they open in Safari! Even though they often open
fine in BBEdit. But I don't like it! Its creepy.

Something has happened and many of my icons are showing up as Safari.
