RE: New to Mac - Just purchased used G4
Steven/Bruce I think my only options here are to see if Apple still has the original restore discs - however its probably not 10.4 which is what is on the machine. Bruce I believe was only commenting on the full retail 10.4 option. I do have system restore discs for my wife's iMac, which is 10.4, however i read those will not work. Macofalltrades and powermax both state they they will provide the discs where available - i assume there must be some loophole in regards to the purchase and sale for old used machines. _ Hotmail® has ever-growing storage! G4 Graphite Video Card Upgrade
My system now has a stock Rage128 Pro Graphics card which is very slow at displaying screens. What upgrade cards are available AGP and would it significantly accelerate displaying and downloading things on the internet. It's VRAM is only 16mb so I'm assuming it's creating a bootleneck to the entire system. It supported my 22 Samsung flatscreen out of the box when I upgraded about three years ago. And yes, I can watch full screen DVD movies without problems. I seriously doubt a bottleneck as most internet broadband connections are not really *that* fast. Connection speeds can vary as I've seen cable/DSL slow down to a virtual crawl on machines much faster than mine. Now, a bottleneck would certainly occur with high end video/graphics production no doubt as compared to today's machines but that is not the issue here... There are many ATI Radeons-7000, 9000, 9600, 9800 and some NVidia GeForces 2Mx, 4Mx 4Ti and 5200, some of which are hacked from G5s to work in G4s. I am running 2 of the hacked cards in my DAs without problems. There are also a variety of flashed pc cards that work, but some have sleep issues. A faster card will help with all screen display chores, redrawing finder windows, scrolling, displaying multiple windows at one time, etc. It is noticeable if you are looking for it. FWIW, my monitor (an older 21 CRT) will not start up OCCASIONALLY when I start up my Mac with it plugged into a hacked AGP 9600. For these times I also have a 16Mb PCI Rage installed. If I am doing my normal workload (light office tasks with way too many icons on the desktop and windows open), I have to pay attention to realize if I have switched back to the 9600. Where it really shows up is screen redraws (opening/closing windows, switching apps) and almost not noticeable for displaying web pages, typing a letter and small photoshop chores. and downloading things on the internet. It will not help with downloading. That is purely a factor of the speed of your connection. It will help SOME with the rendering of web pages on your screen, but not much. It's VRAM is only 16mb so I'm assuming it's creating a bootleneck to the entire system. Thanks DKline The bottleneck is for displaying info. It will not speed up you connection, but overall things will be snappier. New Flip4Mac is broken?
Apparently the new release of Flip4Mac WM Components 2.2.2.3 is broken. Bad library linkages. So far it's happening on all my G3 systems and now one G4. I posted a note in their forums and got a reply back that it's problematic on G3 -- with no details. The soln, for now, is to revert to 2.2.1.11. Many dealers probably have some around they would still like to dump, even for 10 Euros or less. This is stock that they either have had sitting around, or from a company that upgraded and still had these in the storage room and gave them to the dealer. If you go to the Apple store and look for Apple software, they only list 10.5.6 and 10.5.4 Server. Searching for 10.4 in the Apple store turns up no hits.
