bootable firewire sata enclosure
Anyone here who've used a Firewire SATA enclosure that's bootable and care to send me the make and model. One with Ethernet would be sweet, but as long as it's bootable that should be fine. Start by identifying the specific model G5. You can do this by either clicking on the Apple (top left corner of the screen) and selecting About This Mac or by removing the side panel and looking for the sticker on the bottom of the interior case. Different G5 models can take different amounts of RAM and you will want to max out the RAM to get optimal performance. You also might want a better video card than the one that came with the G5, and that will also depend upon the model G5 (AGP or PCI-e video slot). Post the hardware specifics here and you will get tons of good advice. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. 2011 MacBook Pro review fm AnandTech
AnandTech has posted their review of the new Sandy Bridge -based MacBook Pro line. Very hardware oriented, very indepth, with good comparisons. They even go into SSD performance and such. A great read - perfect for us folx what like to get our hands into the hardware! http://www.anandtech.com/show/4205/the-macbook-pro-review-13-and-15-inch-2011-brings-sandy-bridge They even addressed a specific question I had: is Apple using the fixed i/o chip? (Yes, they are!). This was a show-stopper IMO; if Apple was slumming, this would be a generation to skip. I'm about half-way thru the review now. Two issues of note so far: 1. The benchmark results on the bottom of page 2 made me angry. Apple is slacking off. 2. Very annoying that the reviewer had to use Windows to find out the i/o chip details! I picked up the 5.1 used (for $15!!) off craigslist in January, for my GigE dual 450. The new drivers have been working fine, though when I use fast user switching, I get a crazy noise sometimes from the speakers. system logs show a ton of notes about something to do with unexpected volume change (one error for each of the 6 channels). But as soon as I change the volume, it figures itself out, and the loud buzzing goes away, so I haven't worried about it up till now. I am using the analogue ports, not the digital, and my speakers are all small computer speakers, including a cute little sub-woofer that fits under my desk nicely. The only setting I have had to change more than once was the audio input. I want it to be through my web cam, and it keeps trying to pick up from the M-Audio's input port. But that is a setting in Skype, not System Prefs, or the M-Audio panel. Since I watch/listen to all my media on this Mac (there's no TV in my house), it's been really fun to have. Re: Bootable External
If the backup is made by cloning your hard drive then it should be bootable. Firewire is preferable to USB 2.0 as USB 2.0 is pretty slow to boot from but in a pinch it works. If your backup was done with Time Machine then it's not bootable. If you want to see if your backup is bootable, you can choose the boot drive by holding down the option key at startup. Re: A Good Monitor for my DA Dual 533 G4
I was in the same situation some time ago. Seeing that the price for a used card with DVI out was only about 30 USD (that is, not much more than the cost of an ADC-DVI adapter) I decided to go for the card. And in the process, I improved the computer’s performance, because the original card in my DA 466MHz was rather slow, it turns out, compared to the Radeon 9000 card I got. The GeForce one will be good too; just check that the maximum resolution the card supports matched your monitor. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Help - Anyone with OS 9.1 install disk for a G4 Digital Audio?
If there is anyone out there with an install disk, OS 9.1, specifically for the G4 Digital Audio, I'd like to hear from you. The generic retail version does not work for this machine, it needs a special version of finder (9.1.1), and I suspect other bits as well. We can't seem to be able to build a custom version from a generic retail version, so that's why we're asking. Thanks!
