Re: G4 Quicksilver 2002

If it is the fan that cools the heat sink it is very easy to replace. About
$20.00 to buy. First I would determine whether it is just clogged with dust and
stuff, it may just need to be cleaned. My fan was clogged to the point that it
burned the motor out. I reseated the heat sink while replacing the fan using
Arctic Silver from Radio Shack. If you decide to replace the fan be sure and
save the power plug, my new fan came without a plug. FWIW

Bill,
Have you checked the fan that cools the heat sink. I ran my QS with the side

Yes ... I'm looking for some Arctic Silver 5 to try your idea. Thx for the

Update: I tried switching mobo's (a previous one had an ethernet problem),
and got the same kp / random program crashing. I believe this eliminates the

Use of Arctic Silver Cleaning Solutions and Thermal Paste replacement, and at

(anyone know where I can get a couple of thermal pads I found on the dual

The L3 cache does not always appear in the System Profiler when I could get
the OS X 10.5.8 to Startup all the way. And Apple System Profiler

MacDraw like application?

2012-10-19 Thread John Callahan
A long time ago in an another century, in another millennium I had a MacDraw
application that was just great for relatively simple drawings. I used it for
house drawings, working drawings and so on. Unfortunately current drawing
programs have been improved so much that they are practically impossible to
use, or too much work to use for simple things such as working structure and
details drawings. I don't care about 3D projections etc, just elevation and
plan views. MacDraw was perfect for that. Does anyone know of a MacDraw like
program that will work on my iMac Intel?

My QS 2002 came down with kernel panics etc. and after a lot of searching
discovered it was caused by over-heating due to the fact the MB heat sink
cooling fan was not working. I ordered a new fan and while I was waiting for
delivery cooled the heat sink by running with the side door open and a small
electric fan blowing on the heat sink. Worked fine and I kept track of
operating temperatures with a down loaded temp. read out. After receiving the

I think this is when the capacitors in the base station pop. These
aren't normal looking cylindrical capacitors, they're rectangular I
think. There are websites with photos of this problem and fix. The
options are:

1)salvage the Airport card out of the base station and trash the
dead base station. You can sell the power supply and/or Airport card
to subsidize a new one.

2)get new capacitors and solder them in to fix the issue.

3)use another wired router to connect to your ISP via its WAN port
and assign DHCP addresses; then have the Airport station connected
to the wired router LAN-to-LAN port as a passive wireless station.
This is a kludge way of utilizing the wireless of the broken Airport
station by using an old wired router. Probably not the best solution
unless you need wireless NOW and have an old wired router sitting
around.

I recently got a G Drive mobile 750GB, 2,5 (from G-Technology,
Hitachi).
It has USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 ports (it comes with USB, FW 800 and
FW 400

cables).

I'm quite satisfied with it, fast, silent. During a long backup
(over one

hour), it became really hot, though.

I had a Westernal Digital 250GB, 2,5, just USB.
But I had some issues with it (on some computer it didn't get enough
power

from the USB port, so it didn't work without a powered USB hub).
USB is quite slower than Firewire, too.

Although 2,5 drives are handy (small, no need for external power
supply),
if you don't plan to move the drive around, I think you'd better go
for a
3,5 drive: the external power supply makes it more reliable, and
the cost x

GB should be slower.

Good question Cheryl! I would like to use my QuickSilver 2002's

Hope you don't mind if I piggy-back your query. Thanks

OS 10.5

2011-07-26 Thread John Callahan
I would like to purchase Mac OS 10.5 for my iMac Intel Duo currently

price to pay? What should I beware of in the way of copies and scams?
I have two GB's of memory and a one terra byte hard drive with a lot
of free space (898.46 GB).

Thank you

AFAIK, DVD-5s are regular DVD: 5 is short for 4.7GB, while DVD-9
should be Double Layer DVDs (much more expensive), holding approx.
8.5 GB.

Hence, I think any DVD Recorder should be able to burn DVD-5.

IIRC, however, Macs can be picky about DVD-R and DVD+R (two different
standards), and DVD-R are more Mac-compatible.
(I definitely experienced this in OS9 years ago, maybe it's not
true anymore

in OSX)

This is the 350-500MHz machine? Single core? I'd pass. Memory is about
$25/512M. I'd put the $75 toward a Dual Core MDD, 1GHz or 1.25.
Last one of these I bought had 2GB memory built in, and was under
$200. I see this model (@1.25GHz) for $180 with free shipping. I don't
want to sound like a broken record, but this machine runs Leopard and
is the sweet spot for price/performance. It only shows its age when
doing a video encode, all else is great. (Oh, you must add a USB 2.0
card. that's about it)

In the worst case, you could always take the HD from its enclosure and
connect it in a different way, like USB, with that device Bruce

Thanks Geke, I have a kit in the mail that Bruce suggested. When it

External drive fails to appear on Desk top?

2011-02-08 Thread John Callahan

Drive appears in System Profiler but not on the desktop?
Was using LaCie Porsche as a back up drive as a general precaution
and as computer hard drive was starting to fail. Installed new
computer hard drive. I shut down the computer, turned off the LaCie
external drive and then unplugged the firewire cable. I then
installed new hard drive in the computer and tried to start up on the
operating system that I had installed on the LaCie drive as I was
using the external drive for my main drive. A screen came up with a
icon of a file with a question mark in the center of the file icon. I
allowed this condition to exist for five minutes or so and then
installed a new OS 10.4.11 from my computer disk and the new system
loaded and I was able to start the computer. Checked the System
Profiler and found this on the profiler:

System Profiler will show the volume as well, if it's mounted.

If Disk Utility doesn't show it at all, something may be wrong with
the drive or enclosure. Some (generally older) FW enclosures have
master/slave/cable select issues. Try setting the drive jumpers to
Master.

Make sure the drive is plugged in all the way, sometimes it's hard
getting the cables put in.

Thanks Bruce,
This particular model of LaCie appears to be in a sealed case with no
access to drive jumpers. Any suggestions? Have replugged cables.
Drive is about three years old.

Carbon Copy Cloner?

2010-12-22 Thread John Callahan
I realize that this is a sort of elementary question but possibly
someone will help me. Is it possible to copy the entire contents of
my Hard drive to my external drive (300GB cap.) and automatically
replace the files I have there, that would be duplicates but save the
information that is new to my external hard drive? I have information
saved on my external drive that is not stored on my computer hard
drive that I would not want to lose, so erasing my external hard
drive is not an option. As it is I am occupying external hard drive
space by saving information I have already saved and adding to the
problem that I already have. I hope I have phrased this problem so
that it is somewhat understandable but I doubt it.

Much obliged

Fwd: Response from Canon - MultiPASS (KMM10890786V93678L0KM)

Reply-To: Canon Support - MFP m...@cits.canon.com

Dear john Callahan:

Thank you for your inquiry. We value you as a Canon customer and
apologize for the printing issues you are having with your PIXMA
MP810.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee communication with our printers
through a USB connection with an Airport device. We can only
guarantee

communication with a direct connection to your computer via USB.

However, please try the following to resolve your issue:

 1. Click the Apple at the top and choose 'System Preferences'.

 2. Open the 'Print and Fax' menu.

 3. Highlight and delete any copies of the Canon Printer listed on
the

left by clicking the minus (-) sign.

 4. Click the plus (+) sign.

 5. Click 'Default' on the upper left corner. Wait a few moments,
then

highlight the USB version of the printer.

 6. Click 'Add' on the bottom right corner when it becomes available.

6-1. If using OS 10.4 or earlier, select 'More Printers' on the
upper right or bottom right corner.

6-2. Make sure 'USB' is selected in the top drop down menu.

6-3. Highlight the printer when it appears and click 'Add'.

The setup should be complete. Try printing a document to test this
connection.

If this is successful, reconnect the printer to your Airport and
perform

the following:

 1. Return to the System Preferences window.

 2. Open the 'Print and Fax' menu.

 3. Highlight and delete any copies of the Canon Printer listed on
the

left by clicking the minus (-) sign.

 4. Click the plus (+) sign.

 5. Click 'Default' on the upper left corner. Wait a few moments,
then

highlight the Bonjour/Airport version of the printer.

 6. Click 'Add' on the bottom right corner when it becomes available.

6-1. If using OS 10.4 or 10.5, select 'More Printers' on the
upper

right or bottom right corner.

6-2. Make sure 'Bonjour/Airport' is selected in the top drop
down

menu.

6-3. Highlight the printer when it appears and click 'Add'.

If this is successful, try printing a document to test the connection.

If you encounter any errors with the USB connection, please
document the

exact error that appears and also tell us what version of OSX is
installed on your computer.

If the USB connection is successful but the Airport connection
continues

to fail, please contact Apple at (800) 275-2273 for additional
assistance.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we
can be of any further assistance with your PIXMA MP810.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

I'm not entirely sure on this because your experience has typically
been mine, but I would think multifunction printers with wireless
networking support builtin would also support wireless scanning. A
friend of mine actually has a ethernet enabled multifunction printer
and it does support scanning over the network which is really nice. So
in short, it seems to me that any multifunction printer with some sort
of networking builtin should support scanning over that interface. But
YMMV.

Re: Airport Extreme Base Station failure?

2010-03-27 Thread John Callahan

Much obliged to all who responded. Turned out to be a setup problem
not hardware. Did determine that I had a bad Belden fastcat patch
cable which contributed to identifying the problem. I think, and this
is pure conjecture, that I had selected the incorrect channel. This
comes from using the try everything approach rather than a
systematic approach using checklists and such. C'est la vie or
something like that!

Thanks again

Re: QuickSilver G4 1.0Ghz DP help

2010-03-23 Thread John Callahan
Reseat the processor module heat sink and make sure all fans are
clear of dust and crap and operating. There should be a dedicated fan
for processor module heat sink cooling. Down load IstatPro to check
operating temperatures.

On Mar 23, 2010, at 9:32 PM, Albert Carter wrote:

All,

I recently got a QuickSilver G4 1.0Ghz DP for 25 bucks I was
informed it was freezing up but the previous owner thought it might
have been RAM related. I've changed out the RAM and run several
runs of XBench (figured this would stress enough for problems to
come out). I have seen no problems via that. I don't have any Apple
Hardware Diagnostics that works for this Macintosh (is this
available as a free download from Apple by any chance?). I have
noticed something though - The heatsink on top of the processors
seems to get VERY HOT. Like if I shutdown the computer and open the
side and touch the heatsink it is just cool enough so it doesn't
cause a burn, is this normal? I have checked the fan that is under
the shroud that routes out of the case and it spins and runs so its
not that that isn't working. If this processor normally runs hot is
there any better way to cool it a side fan doesn't seem like a very
effective way of cooling (I'm from the PC World where heatsinks
have fans on top).

Next question I plan on setting this up as a server and want to
add harddrives to it but have noticed there are a total of 5 or 6
molex plugs for internal harddrives however most of them route
inconviently. Is the PSU on this computer adequate enough to run 4
hard drives if I get splitters? If not does this take a standard
ATX based PSU or do I need to get a compatable higher wattage one?

Thank You,
Albert Carter
