Nope! It's not the cable. The other ATA bus is busted!

It worked! Thanks! The strange thing is, I tried putting it back to

cable is busted. I'll try to switch the cable later to see whtr the

Did that and it's the same. Grey screen with Apple logo - no spinning
wheel. I've waited like 5 minutes or so. I think I've messed up the HD
with the OSX pretty badly!

Sorry if I did not mention that! That is the problem. I can't boot
with the older HD now, which is installed with the OSX. Therefore, I
can't use the G4 at the moment. I thought I might be able to install
OSX again by booting from the CD but it doesn't work. I've read
somewhere that you can't boot from the install CD.

To narrow down the possible causes, I have removed the HD for time

I can't seem to boot, so how do I get to the disc utilty? I have to
fall back to Windows to get into this forum. If I use Gparted, do I
have to burn it to the CD in Mac? Can I do it in Windows? I can only
use WIndows now. Lastly, how do I check whether another device is on
the same channel? Sorry for all these questions, but I'm desperate!

Newbie: Help! Powermac G4 Dual 867Mhz Mirror Door

2009-11-14 Thread Patrick Lee
Hi, I messed up BIG time!

After installing a new HDD, I pressed the ON/OFF button a couple of
times upon seeing that the HDD is not recognised (the multi-colored
wheel kept on spinning when I clicked on the new HDD icon). I know I
should not do that but that's too late now!

Now, the G4 just shows the grey screen with the Apple logo and is
stuck there. I suspect I may have destroyed the boot record by
pressing the ON?OFF switch a few times.

I am trying to boot using the 10.5 install disk (Retail) but it just
don't work. I booted up G4 while pressing the Option button but the
screen show both the install CD and my system HDD marked "X".

What should I do? I would really appreciate some advice! Thanks!

Patrick

Newbie! Memory and Video card upgrade for G4 dual 867Mhz PowerPc

2009-11-12 Thread Patrick Lee
Hi! I'm TOTALLY new to Mac, so pardon me if I sound clueless!

I have a G4 dual 867Mhz with nVidia 32MB AGP display, running Mac OS
10.3.9. I'd like to upgrade to OS 10.5. Therefore, I'm thinking of
upgrading the RAM to 2GB, which is the max.

1. What's the memory stick that I can use? 512MBper stick or 1GB or
2GB?

2. For the VRAM, is 32MB the max?

3. How can I upgrade my 60GB HDD to 160GB? Any 3.5" IDE HDD will do?
Can I do clone my existing HDD to the new HDD without re-installing
everything? If yes, how/what software do I use?

I'm also thinking of replacing the DVD-ROM with a DVD-RW. Will any
DVD-writer do?

Appreciate some advice on this. Thanks. Patrick.
