Image Attachments in Mac Mail

2013-11-30 Thread Michael McMurtrey
Why does Mail sometimes change my attachments to embedded images? I'm
trying to send some JPEGs of about 3.5 MBs each, but I have received a
complaint that each one has been converted to a 640 x 293 pixel
thumbnail inserted as pictures. How do I ensure my recipient
receives the full-size images?

I assume you mean one of the ADC displays that get power from the
video card.
Nothing special -- if the power supply was marginal enough for an
ADC display
to push it over the edge, there's nothing you could realistically
have done

to avoid its failure.

However, ADC doesn't draw a great deal, which is why Apple ended up
abandoning it.

Yes, which version of mail? I am using 2.1.3 under 10.4 and there is
an option for image size in the bottom right corner of the compose
window once you add a picture. Make sure that is set to actual size.
I took a quick look and I did not see where to set the default image
size in Mail's preferences.

The 640 x 293 is pretty close to the medium. so it may be sizing
things down to that.

You could try compressing them (one by one, or in a single folder/file), and
attach them as ZIP files. Mail shouldn't mess with ZIP attachments.

Every version of Mail I've used has had some means of setting the size of an
attachment. I believe Mail tries to be 'smart' and limit sizes to a
'manageable range' by default

IIRC, since 10.4-ish, there's been a small dropdown menu at the top of the body
when an attached image is present, allowing you to choose small, medium, large
and 'original size'. This applies to all attachments.

That said there has been seven versions of Mail to date, always specify the
version and/or OS X version when you post a question, because the actual answer
may vary depending on the version.

Actually, the port most mail servers user to send mail to the client is
110. That is Pop3. You can set the mail to be sent on any port you
want. That is not always wise, as is the case here. What needs to be
done is set the mail program to listen for mail on port 587. There
should be a way to do this. There is with every mail program I have
used. Unfortunately, I have never used mail. Lo siento, Dennis

Are you using POP or IMAP protocol? The standard port for receiving mail
on IMAP is 993, and SMTP sends mail on port 465 or 587. Also check with
Qwest about SSL/TLS and secure authorization settings for receiving mail.

I think the POP ports are 25 for SMTP 110 for receiving but it's been a
long time since I've used POP, and again you will need to check the
SSL/TLS and secure authorization settings with Qwest. A Google search
should provide the answers, or you can always roll the dice with
customer service.

Search in Google, from within Mac Mail 3.6

2010-03-27 Thread gifutiger
Greeting Everyone

When in Mac Mail 3.6 if I highlight a word or a phrase and then using
the right mouse button from the drop-down menu select Search in
Google nothing ever happens.

Do I have a Mail parameter set incorrectly or not selected?

If I due the same from within Safari the Google Search happens
Okay.

However if I do the search from within TextEdit also no results.

I I select the Search in Spotlight or Lookup in Dictionary they do
the requested operation.

Would like to use the Google Search from mail if it works.

Cheers

I just tried it in Mail, and it opened Safari and searched google for

Don't see any parameters for such ... do you have Safari as your
default browser?

Just guessing.

Greetings,

Yes, Safari is the default browser.
Same for me, I can't find any parameters that prevents the Search in
Google from mail.

I hope someone else knows what the problem is.

Mac Mail

2009-11-30 Thread Geoff Black
Another Anomaly

Every time I attach a jpeg or PDF to mac mail it changes the file size
- wether send windows friendly is checked or not. When sending pix
to pre-press
this causes great embarrasment.

I have to use thunderbird for that reason, but multiple mailboxes is
not good for me.

Cannot see in the prefs anything that stops Mac Mail from enctrypting
the attachment.

Any ideas welcome ... welcome...

An anomaly indeed. According to Mail Help,

When you attach images to a message, Mail displays
the total size of the message and all attached images
at the bottom of the message window. If your message
exceeds the maximum size allowed by your email provider,
the message size appears in red, along with the allowed
limit (when Mail is able to get that information from
the email provider).

Are you seeing the adjusted file sizes before the message
is sent or is the recipient complaining that the received
file is wrong?

What version of Mail are you using?

In addition to Geoff's advice, in Mail 3 (at least) there's a drop
down menu at the bottom of the window that appears when you attach or
drop in a photo. It defaults to 'Medium Size', but you can select
'Actual Size' from the menu.

You do still have to be aware that most ISP's place a limit on the
size of individual email messages.

This is why printing houses generally maintain FTP servers for people
to upload their files.

Geoff,

You can always ZIP the file in which case nothing can touch the content.
I'm not sure why your file is being tampered with although I remember
AOL being notorious for resampling graphics attached to emails.
Bruce mentions the drop down selector giving the option of Actual
Size for your file.

You might look into one of the file hosting services especially for
files that exceed ISP limits (typically 5-10MB).
I recently upgraded my Stuffit license to see what their file hosting
service Stuffit Connect was like. So far it seems OK.

Service Bureau ftp sites are often a maze of assigned passwords,
required pre-registration and time limits. I hate to deal with them.
