My thanks to all of you! As usual, an insightful and helpful group
with lots of perspective and answers. You've given me a place to
start.

And Loren, may you NEVER be burgled again (even if they just take
something that doesn't quite work they way you need it to.)

Re: Recommend a Scanner

2009-01-29 Thread Paxton

Can anyone recommend a currently available artist quality scanner
that will work with my G4 MDD running OS X 10.3 (and probably will
upgrade to 10.4)? I did check the archives, but the related topics are
 a little dated.

The most important thing in a scanner is the Dmax which gives the
range the scanner covers from light to dark. For Artist Quality the
higher Dmax the better.

At our local community college I have used the Epson 1XL that is a
12 X 17 Graphic Arts scanner hooked into a Mac graphic arts lab. I
really liked it but at $2500 it is very expensive. It's Dmax is 3.8
and it now is an older product.

The one I would recommend is a V700, a current model. It has a Dmax
of 4.0, is new $547 from Epson and is a 6400 X 9600 DPI scanner. My
photography teacher, at the community college, bought one for himself.
It covers 8.5 X11 inches. I thnk you could find it cheaper.

I lucked out this last trip and got an Epson 4490 Photo from Goodwill
for $10. It is a current but older model with a Dmax of 3.4 and is
4800 X 9600 DPI model, also 8.5 X 11 inches.

These are all 48 bit color depth. and all have Digital ICE.

There is the V500 but it is the upgrade of the 4490 and only has a
Dmax of 3.4, nowhere near as good as the V700.

I would recommend the Epson Perfection V700.

Don't have a brand of scanner to recommend, but you might factor in
the software many use with their scanners, called VueScan:
http://www.hamrick.com/index.html

I use it with an old SCSI Umax 2400S flatbed as well as a USB Nikon
5000ED Transparency Scanner.

The software takes care of most scanners across all OS Xs.

Take a look at Canon's offerings. They're decent quality, light,
reasonable speed, good resolution.

Currently, I have a Canon CanoScan LiDE70 Color Image Scanner. I
think it cost about $80 a year ago. 48 bit, with an optical
resolution of 2400x4800 dpi, interpolated to 19.2 Kdpi. No power
supply - it leeches off your USB 2 port.

The CanoScan software, I find, to be a bit clunky, but quite useful
once you get used to it. Lots of good options. Some nice built-in
filters. And it will identify multiple items on the bed and
automagically chop them up for you, giving you individual files for
each.

FWIW,
- Dan.

By what do you means artist quality? Does this mean you just need
reference scans of sketches, hi-res scans of photographs, or decent
scans of 3-D materials placed on the scanner bed? (all three of which
I've seen artists use scanners for :-)

I intend to use the scanner for full-color detailed artwork and the

think I'll be scanning 3D since I do all of that via photos, but if
you can recommend something that can do it all that would be an
 advantage.

Well it's mildly important, since, like Dan, I recommend the Canon
LiDE series. I've got two, an old old one at work and a newer one at
home, and I like them a lot, they're reliable, easy to use and they
produce nice scans.

Both fit neatly in my bookshelf when not in use, so they're not the
desk-eating monster larger scanners are, they're also USB powered, so
field-based scanning in the library, or even the field, is easily done.

One drawback (hence my questions) is that these models have a very
shallow depth of field, the do not scan objects set on the glass very
well at all.

I'll also second the recommendation of VueScan. Very nice indeed, lots
of ways to fix imaging problems right in the scanner.

Re: Recommend a Scanner

2009-01-26 Thread aussieshepsrock

You might want to check out the Epson Perfection Series.
I personally use the now discontinued 4870 Photo model which has a
nice built in transparency adapter and film holders ranging from
mounted 35mm slides (8 at a time), 35mm negative strips (4 at a time),
120 neg strips, and 4x5 (2 at a time). The software is fully osx
compatible and VueScan will work with it if interested. (Vuescan IS
capable of better scans, but the learning curve was very hard for me
and I stick with the Epson drivers).

The Epson site also routinely has good deals on closeouts and refurbs.

Tip: The perfection models lacking 'photo' don't sport the
transparency adapter (generally) and the Photo Pro models sport a more
robust software set. (your mileage may vary on this tip)

On the upside, the 4870 Perfections and others have ICE technology
which in these cases work with prints as well as negatives.
ICE is a blend of hardware and software which adds a 'surface height'
scan to find dust and scratches on your film and prints and 'filter'
them out of the final scan through techniques similar to 'cloning' in
photoshop. I've oversimplified the description here - but up to a
point it does work. It does have tradeoffs, but it's better to have it
than not to. Not All Scanners Have ICE!
