Don't have a brand of scanner to recommend, but you might factor in  
the software many use with their scanners, called VueScan:
http://www.hamrick.com/index.html

I use it with an old SCSI Umax 2400S flatbed as well as a USB Nikon  
5000ED Transparency Scanner.

The software takes care of most scanners across all OS Xs.
