The most important thing in a scanner is the Dmax which gives the
range the scanner covers from light to dark. For Artist Quality the
higher Dmax the better.

At our local community college I have used the Epson 10000XL that is a
12 X 17 Graphic Arts scanner hooked into a Mac graphic arts lab. I
really liked it but at $2500 it is very expensive. It's Dmax is 3.8
and it now is an older product.

The one I would recommend is a V700, a current model. It has a Dmax
of 4.0, is new $547 from Epson and is a 6400 X 9600 DPI scanner. My
photography teacher, at the community college, bought one for himself.
It covers 8.5 X11 inches. I thnk you could find it cheaper.

I lucked out this last trip and got an Epson 4490 Photo from Goodwill
for $10. It is a current but older model with a Dmax of 3.4 and is
4800 X 9600 DPI model, also 8.5 X 11 inches.

These are all 48 bit color depth. and all have Digital ICE.

There is the V500 but it is the upgrade of the 4490 and only has a
Dmax of 3.4, nowhere near as good as the V700.

I would recommend the Epson Perfection V700.
