Take a look at Canon's offerings. They're decent quality, light, reasonable speed, good resolution. Currently, I have a "Canon CanoScan LiDE70 Color Image Scanner". I think it cost about $80 a year ago. 48 bit, with an optical resolution of 2400x4800 dpi, interpolated to 19.2 Kdpi. No power supply - it leeches off your USB 2 port. The CanoScan software, I find, to be a bit clunky, but quite useful once you get used to it. Lots of good options. Some nice built-in filters. And it will "identify" multiple items on the bed and automagically chop them up for you, giving you individual files for each.
