Re: USB Drive Issues
By will not work I meant will not mount when connected through the USB hub. The only activity is a repeated chirp and a flashing yellow light at the back of the drive. I've tried a different USB cord to connect it, but that makes no difference. The drive mounts normally when connected directly to the computer (not through the keyboard ports), and Disk Utility reports all is well with it. The power supply is not making any noises, is not overheating, and does not smell funny. The drive was reformatted before use and never gave any trouble until this recent hiccup. I normally left it connected all the time, as I put the computer to sleep every night instead of shutting it down completely. The only other USB devices I have are an HP LaserJet P1006 printer and an HP DeskJet D1415 printer plus an assortment of USB flash drives. All of these function normally, regardless of the port on the USB hub they are plugged into, whether the hub is powered or not. System Profiler reports the following about the built-in USB: Host Controller Location: Built In USB Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBOHCI PCI Device ID:0x0019 PCI Revision ID: 0x0001 PCI Vendor ID:0x106b Bus Number: 0x19 A USB 2.0 card, however, sounds like a good idea. Re: USB Drive Issues
It is not uncommon for ports on a powered hub to go bad. Did you connect the drive to a different port on the hub? Larry All of a sudden my Verbatim USB drive (AC320GB) will not work when connected to my Targus USB hub. The hub is powered, and the power supply seems to be working. All other USB peripherals work fine when plugged into the hub, and the Verbatim drive works fine when plugged directly into a USB port on the computer. Could this be an indication that the drive is failing? Disk utility reports all is okay with it. Computer is a dual-processor MDD running 10.4.11. Where do I get one? Michael McMurtrey Carrollton, TX The AppleUSBOHCI indicates that it is USB 1.1. OHCI and UHCI are USB 1.x, whereas EHCI is USB 2.0. To get USB 2.0 you can use any PCI expansion card that internally uses a NEC chip. But most vendors don't tell you what chip they use, so you may have a hard time finding one that does (without it being officially Mac compatible). I use a D-Link DU-520 in three of my Power Macs. As one of a few it even officially supports Mac OS X. ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/datasheets/DU-520.pdf ftp://ftp10.dlink.com/pdfs/products/DU-520/DU-520_fab.pdf It costs about € 20,-- in Europe. One other card, that worked in one of my Power Macs: Digitus DC USB2-5 Unfortunately it is no longer available. At least I couldn't find it on the Digitus website. Anyway, my point is: looking at the picture, you can even see that it has a NEC chip on it. Such cards are compatible with Mac OS X, even if they are not designated as such by the vendor. http://p.gzhls.at/50972.jpg Cheers, Andreas aka Mac User #330250 -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Sorry… I didn't answer the “where”… As I'm not from the States, I don't know where you guys get your computer stuff. In Europe we have hardware chains that have such articles as well as independent hardware dealers. Mostly, the later ones are the best choices to get such expansion cards cheaper than in the hardware chains. But their range of products is limited, so we use the internet. In Europe there is a great web page that has all the prices of local stores for specific products. With it you can find the cheapest one. With the shipping costs or the costs to collect it you can then figure out where to buy. Or, you get the idea of how much a specific item should cost and you come to the hardware chain with a price in mind. If it isn't too much overpriced, you go for it. If you want to take a look: http://geizhals.eu Geizhals (german) can be translated as cheapskate or miser. You can even seach for USB 2.0 PCI cards in general: http://geizhals.eu/?cat=ioexpcardxf=621_PCI%7E624_2%7E624_1%7E624_3%7E624_4%7E624_5%7E624_7sort=p (sorted by price, cheapest seller, without shipping costs) In the U.S., my approach would be to find a hardware store in your area, or even something like Amazon, that has such a USB 2.0 PCI expansion card, 1) with a NEC chip, 2) at a reasonable price (around $20 max?). Re: USB Drive Issues
If you're using this drive straight out-of-the-box, meaning it's formatted Windows FAT and has the Windows software still installed on the drive, you probably should wipe the HD clean and repartition format the HD using Disk Utility. These USB HDs that come pre- installed with Windows software often cause problems, the SanDisk thumb drives with their U3 software is infamous this way, and your drive appears to have similar auto backup or auto launch Windows software pre-installed, which is useless to your Mac, and can only cause problems. The MDD only came with USB 1.1 (12 mbps) USB ports, so you need to buy a USB 2.0 PCI card (400 mbps) to get high-speed operation out of this HD. Virtually everything is USB 2.0 now, and I've had problems in the past mixing newer USB 2.0 peripherals with older USB 1.1 ports - they're supposed to be backwards compatible, but USB is so flakey already that mixing different versions isn't a good idea. If the HD has been re-partitioned and formated to Mac (or Windows FAT if you need a drive that can mount on both Macs PCs) and you're still having problems, before jumping to the conclusion the HD is failing, you might look at the chipset of the USB bridge and see if there's any kind of firmware updates available (look in System Profiler under USB while directly connected for VID PID #'s). Some USB chipsets are known to have problems and there are firmware updates for a few. This isn't a likely solution, but the idea your HD is failing is probably less likely. Get a USB 2.0 PCI card first, make sure the HD is clean formated for Mac use, check for new firmware, and only then think the HD might be failing. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: USB Drive Issues
-- Original message -- Subject: USB Drive Issues Date:Monday, 24. October 2011 From:Michael McMurtrey skyking...@verizon.net To: g3-5-list@googlegroups.com All of a sudden my Verbatim USB drive (AC320GB) will not work when connected to my Targus USB hub. From my experience, there is no logical explanation to that strange behaviour. I once had a USB flash drive that used to work a couple of times with my USB hub, but all out of a sudden it just stopped being even recognized by Mac OS X (Tiger) when plugged into the hub – but still worked fine when plugged directly into the USB 2.0 PCI expansion card, or the integrated USB hub of the Apple Pro keyboard (USB 1.1 only). I formated the flash drive once (actually, a few weeks ago, out of necessity) and since that it is working again from the hub. ?? I just don't get it. But this is what happened. My other USB devices (WD external HDD, other USB flash drive, USB DVD-RW drive) don't have these issues and always work(ed) with this particular hub. Hence my conclusion: your drive is most likely NOT failing. It is simply a compatibility issue when certain USB devices (controller – hub – drive) are not 100% working together. That's what I make of it. I know this doesn't help, but it may help to “understand”.
