Re: iPhone 5 and PPC macs -- what to do?

2012-10-13 Thread Dave49er
Why is it either iPhone 5 or Android? There are other alternatives:

1. Use iCloud. iOS 5 and 6 don't need iTunes or a computer.
2. Use an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S instead of Android. I have a 4S and see no
compelling reason to get a 5.

The S3 has both a microsd (64 Gb capacity cards) and a microusb slot.
If I attach the latter to the mac, will the phone appear as a storage
volume?

Dave: Good idea, but, as you said, one is wasting time sending an
email or letter to Apple. I think they are convinced that they are
fully justified in cutting off some small segment of their "loyal"
customers. The "bottom line", after all.

There are a number of Android utilities that will backup the phone to
internal storage (they actually run on the phone itself). If your phone has
a microSD slot, then it simply appears as USB Mass Storage to the Power Mac,
and you can copy anything on the card in that slot (including any backups you
have made) directly to the Mac.

If the phone does not have microSD, like the Galaxy Nexus, you have to use
MTP which is a little trickier, but should still work.

Many thanks, Cameron. I tend to agree -- can't imagine having a faster
computer than my G5 dual 2.3 GHz and am very annoyed at Apple for not
supporting their own 5 year old OS 5 while still supporting a 10 year
old Windows OS!

Do you know whether the Galaxy S3 will work with a PPC mac? (I know
nothing about Android.) I am particularly interested in things like
full backup and restore, which is extremely difficult with an iPhone
without computer support (Frankly, I can use iCloud for the syncing of
an iPhone, but a full backup/restore requires a computer.)

Thanks again.

Not that it will make an ounce of difference to Apple management, but I would
suggest you buy an Android phone, keep using your G5 PowerMac as long as you
want to, and also write a letter, or email to Apple in protest of their
policies to drop support for their computers so soon, while they are still
useful and productive.

The fact that Apple is already dropping support for even some of their Intel
powered computers in some ways already is ridiculous in my point of view. I
don't expect them to support their products past the point where they can be
useful any more, but clearly many people still want to use their late model G4
and most G5 Mac computers. Certainly owners of the early Intel powered Mac
computers must have expected to be able to use them fully without giving up any
features that are available to newer Mac models today. (don't ask me what
features, I can't remember, but it was something posted on this list)

I switched to Android when Apple stopped supporting 10.4 with iOS. If you
stick to Nexus devices, you get a solid phone with at least 2 major Android
versions and prompt updates. The only downside of my Galaxy Nexus is that
it only connects with MTP (the PTP support in OS X doesn't work right with
it for transferring images), but I believe there is an MTP for 10.5.8 PPC from
Google (I'm writing my own MTP sync system with libmtp for the command line,
which is something I *can't* do with an iPhone).

Strictly speaking, it doesn't even need to do that; it "just works." I don't
see why I should jettison my perfectly good quad G5 just to stay on the
Apple iOS treadmill. And, with Android, I don't have to.

iPhone 5 and PPC macs -- what to do?

2012-09-16 Thread Warren Nagourney
The new iPhone 5 can no longer be used with a PPC mac, since the
minimum OS is 10.6.8. I obviously have two options.

Either I can submit to Apple's blackmail and buy an intel Mac that I
don't need in order to use the new phone. Or, I can consider an
Android phone. Frankly, I am very reluctant to do the first, since my
dual core G5 is very fast and nothing I do will be appreciably
improved by spending $1000+ on a new Mac. Furthermore, the new Mac
would require me to spend $2500 to upgrade the software -- I need to
use a high end CAD program which has a very expensive upgrade.

The other alternative is buying an Android phone. I liked the iPhone
hardware, but have some misgivings about the OS (no file system,
Apple's control freakery, etc). While the iPad is clearly best in
class, I am not that sure about the iPhone.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks!
