2006-05-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Raul.
Thanks for that note. I also was about to say something on this, but
been busy with Monty, and STFC so didn't get to it.
I'm in full agreement the spam tags need to be dropped from the subject.
I actually got a complaint about this from another user who actually
thought the messages were spam when they are not.

Re: [Audyssey] A STFC suggestion

Hi, Ron.
That doesn't sound like it would be to hard to add. Although, currently
I believe full status will announce the active starship or starbase I
realise few want to listen to the entire status report just for a ship
name. I'll see what I can do.

I'm looking at doing a new and better one for the upcoming update.

Re: [Audyssey] stfc strategies

2006-05-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Raul.
At this time you can not detect any cloaked vessel in STFC so you have
to guess what there first opening moves will be. Usually, by now you
probably can guess what that is.

S
P
O
I
L
E
R

The cloaked vessels especially the Klingon ships are the most dangerous
in the opening moves of the enemies attack plan take them out asap, and
if you can get the two ones across the neutral zone early on you will
have a better chanse in succeeding winning the game.
The Cardassians can be seen coming and if they are pretty far out yet
you have a Window of time to take out Klingons.

Can folks please fix subject lines? It's not a lot to ask that the word
"Spam" be taken out. I realize some anti-spam solutions tag the subject

this mailing list or fix the subject lines. This one here is rather
silly seeing is how there is two spam words in the one subject line.

[Audyssey] This seams like an issue of interest...

2006-05-24 Thread M.J. Terblanche
Hi,
I came across this info on Nextup.com's web site. I thaught it of interest
because there's games out that used this aproach for spoken text. Can anyone
explain a bit more of the leagle issues here? I thought of using this approach
myself, but it seems it might be a problem.
See Below.
Matthys.
First Message.
I think that's a great idea...there are plenty of owners of Text Aloud, I
think, and each has at least one voice. Why can't we build a database of sorts?
Have owners submit, say, a 5 minute clip of generic content, in a voice(s) of
their choice.
First reply.
Because of legal restrictions on redistributing audio files created with the
premium voices, there are limits on this type of thing.
_
Ken White
NextUp.com
Seccond message.
I understand...but don't you think there might be some marketing potential in
such a database?

--Doug
Third Message.
On second thought, I guess I don't understand. I'm thinking of a collection of
audio clips that are free. No one would pay for anything; no money would
change hands. Is there a legal restriction on making audio files available
using this method? If so, what?
Seccond reply.
Yes. The general rule is that the consumer license of all the premium voices
prevent you from distributing audio files created with the voices to others
over the net. It takes special licensing to do that.

[Audyssey] beat the borg

2006-05-24 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
This is way cool. I beat the borg and lost zero ships in the process.
Took about 11 or 12 moves. Not bad for my first try.

[Audyssey] A STFC suggestion

2006-05-24 Thread Ron Schamerhorn
Hi Tom

After playing around a fair bit with stfc I was wondering if it's at all
possible to implament a keystroke in the game to tell you which ship/base
you are presently playing. Since part of the game is indeed strategy
something like this could be useful.

[Audyssey] STFC question

2006-05-24 Thread Ron Schamerhorn
Hey people

Just wondering if someone would be kind enough to send me the STFC manual?
For some strange reason I was just reading it and only got to page 11 of the
rtf file.

TIA

[Audyssey] stfc strategies

2006-05-24 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
OK. I admit I like strategy games but I'm still having a hard time with
divising a good one for stfc. What I've been doing is sending 2 ships to
each station and the last one keeping it between the two stations to try
and lend a hand if needed. I almost always lose one of the stations due
to those turtle heads, the Klingons decloking right at the front door of
the station and getting rid of it. I sometimes manage to kill off one or
two of the ships but not always.

Is there any way of detecting them so they don't just show up?

I'd be willing to host the files on the games section of asmodean.net if
you want to email them to me.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] star wars

2006-05-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi.
Yes, that is true. If you are not good at planning things and figuring
out strategies STFC and Trek 2000 aren't the games for you. They are
complex in that you have to think carefully about every move and plan
ahead and try and think about what the enemy will do next.
One of the reasons I had to write STFC is I got so good at Trek 2000 I
almost always won on the highest difficulty level, and when I did I had
usually three ships left to take on more enemies.
In STFC even though I know in general terms the kinds of tactics and
strategies the enemies will try I have been surprised on many many cases
where they didn't do the expected action.
For example one time I got the bright idea of sending everything I had
in to Klingon space. Blew the Klingon's to kingdom come. As I was
retreating three Romulans hit me from the rear and I lost two ships
before I could slow the Romulans down plus lost one in the fight with
the Klingons.

Re: [Audyssey] star wars

2006-05-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Nicol.
SOD is a sci-fi game. It has many sci-fi elements like cyborgs, mutants,
teleporters, etc. The genre is sci-fi and the style of play is first
person action shooter.
The Star Wars game I am writing is also a sci-fi but it goes under the
sub genre of Star Wars sinse all the enemies and characters are Star
Wars. The style like SOD is First Person Shooter.
One major difference I would like to point out that SOD is basicly a 2d
game. I am really thinking about creating true 3D objects in Star Wars,
but that could be possably very complex to play since things would be
above and below you as well as the basic directions.
You might be getting shot at, and if you look up you see a Storm Trooper
above you on a metal catwalk firing a blaster at you.
Although, the Jedi Knight games were fun that way as there were usually
alternative routes in to a room. For example to access a control room
the main door might be locked, but upstairs you would find a airvent or
grate, cut it open with your light saber, and drop in on top of the
enemy and start kicking butt.

Hi, Nicol.
Before I launch in to a discussion of the points you raised I'd like to
make a correction. Star Wars is a specific sscience fiction story owned
and licensed by Lucasfilm Limited just as Star Trek is a science fiction

owned and licensed by Paramount Pictures. So any Star Wars game made
would follow the Star Wars story just like the Star Trek games would
follow known Star Trek stories. A general sci-fi game could be anything
the developer wants it to be.
As far as Trek 2000 verses Star Trek Final Conflict if you are having
problems with Trek 2000 you will have an even rougher time with Final
Conflict. My version is much more complex in design, the enemy AI is
tough to beat, and there is allot of use of angles and degrees for
setting course, targeting, etc.
As for the Star Wars game I am developing, Jedi Strike, it is a first
person action shooter. In simple terms it is kind of like SOD where you
navigate through Imperial bases, underground Sith temples, etc and you
get to play Jedi Knight Mara Jade with all the force powers and skills
that implies. Unlike SOD you have all the special force abilities of the

Jedi as well as wield the most powerful weapon in the Universe the light

saber.
As for games like Dark Destroyer personally I feel there are to many
general arcade genre of games out there like it such as Aliens in the
Outback, Troupenum, Pipe, etc. I am attempting to go beyond that with my

titles and give the gamer the experience of playing high class sighted
games such as Star Wars Jedi Knight or something along those lines.
