[Audyssey] Self-voicing games versus screen-reader based games

2006-06-04 Thread Ken the Crazy
First off, if I sound a bit tactless, please forgive me as I have been
severely sick for a few days now, but I feel I need to make some points on
the issue of which is better, self-voicing games, or games that use screen
readers.
I'm so tired of screen reader based games. We're already bound to screen
readers for everything else as it is, so why should we have to have crappy
voice synthesizers in our games too? It's like saying, "okay kiddies, how
do you want your yummy carrots today--raw, chopped, sliced and diced, deep
fried, pickled, boiled, or have you thought of a nice new way to cook them?"
Any way you make 'em, they're still carrots, and any time you make games
with voice synthesizers you have that metallic element added. In Tank
Commander, the AT&T synths were not used often, and it was like a computer
was guiding you, and that fit perfectly with what the game is like. David
did the other voices himself.
Voice synthesis technology is a very important facet of life as a blind
person, but I am beginning to gag on the taste of them as it were. If you
can find a truly remarkable synthesizer, one you would actually want to use
in a game, be sure that most computers would be too slow to have that synch
and Jaws working together. It's funny, but the other day I heard some
sighted people complaining about voice synths. They didn't even know it was
a voice synth, someone just came up and said, "what's wrong with that
lady--she sounds messed up on something."
"No," I replied, "that's a voice synthesizer."

Now Kate and Paul, the voices from Neospeech, far outrank Natural Voices and
other other synth company's voices to date, but I'd rather you use SAPI to
make them work than to have JAWS read them. For one thing, most of us only
have the 40 minute demo. For another, some don't have jaws. They have
window eyes or Hal, so why tailor make a game for one or two synth programs
when SAPI can do it all? As far as reviewing information, the use of the
function keys works very well, as in Jim Kitchen's text to Speech hangman.
If such keys were made standard from one game to another, and from one
company to another, you'd learn each game very rapidly, as you would already
know the special hot keys You wouldn't have to adjust the voice, because
you'd already have it set up in speech under the control panel in XP
and--well, I can't remember about how to do that in other windows operating
systems, but how hard would it be to set up a speech file that all
SAPI-compliant games could instantly read from and adjust?Having said all
that, I'll add one more thing. Voice actors are essential. I hope to get
into it again when I massothereapy classes are finished.

Hi gamers!
What's up this Sunday? Hope your doing great!
About Judgement Day ominous title, gives me the shivers. Seriously,
sounds cool. Some suggestions:
1. Do we get to hear the mighty Athier speak? I mean if he's the supreme
evil wouldn't he taunt us a little? Or say he'll vanquish the Allies or
something? Or is he so evil his power and corruptedness speaks for itself?
2. The base when it makes repairs, gives you nukes etc., I can't hear it
well enough to distinguish what it's saying. Can you make it louder,
clearer, something?
3. Along those same lines, can you have a louder sound for the airplanes?
Couldn't pick them up on my speakers + subwolfer. Maybe a wwII airplane?
Always loved those motor sounds.
4. if you die how is judgement done to you. Are thereenslaved nations under
the thumb of tyrony? Does the world blow up? What happens? I mean, this
is Judgement Day so something spectacular should happen if:
a. you lose
or
b: you win in which case I was expecting more for an ending than game over.
*grins*
Maybe too high of expectations, if in which case I apologize. Am psyched

Hi Folks,
David has worn his fingers to the bone to fix that nasty international bug in
the SuperDog game.
No it isn't bird flue but it did make many of our foreign game players sick,
since they could not play the game.
He sent me the vaccine this morning and I put the fixed version on my web site.
It is named sbh11.exe and that is the only thing I changed so if you can play
version 10 right now, there is no use in downloading version 11.
Thanks David, and if you need the address,

[Audyssey] experiences with Trek 2000 so far

2006-06-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
I can now beat the game at the Don't Hurt me level in under 16 moves
usually and without losing a ship.

I figure I'll play at this level for a bit longer and then move on up to
Bring'em on.

I like making the turtle heads follow me around. Since they like to
bunch up on you it comes in handy to get them following you and then I
set a mine. If I'm lucky enough I can usually set it so that I take out
at least three of them including one of their bases. If I then don't
take out the fourth one I usually hurt him enough where 3 or 4 torps do
him in.

I usually don't go into Romulan space but I do go into Tholian space and
take out one or two of their bases. I try to take out a ship or two in
the process as well.

[Audyssey] Judgement day suggestions

2006-06-04 Thread Neo
Hi Liam,
great trailer. I've got a few possible suggestions for you to think about based
on hearing it.
First, would be cool to have a new kind of enemy, something like a plane with a
machine gun that would fire at you if you were too slow or stayed in its
vicinity for too long. Something like the Yellow ships in Alien Outback.
It also could be interesting if you added an occasional need to recharge your
machine gun after a certain number of shots fired, something like in Super
Shot. Just press a key quickly and fire away again, it would become second
nature after a while, but it could also become a pretty nasty challenge at
times, especially on the hard difficulty, I'm sure.
And last, what about an all new enemy or a possible improvement for the so
called disablers? I've thought about having to dispatch this kind of enemy
really quickly, otherwise you'd just lose some points and one of your weapons
would stop workink randomly till you destroyed another enemy of the same kind.
This would have to be somewhat intelligent though, so that you couldn't end up
in a situation where you had only 2 nukes left and the only working weapon were
just them, for example... :-)
Well, that's about it.
Thanks,
Lukas

I agree with the trophy aspect of it. I also like the sounds where the
machine guns sound like real machines guns etc. Is the game going to be that
easy for the first few rounds or will there be difficulty levels??

I agree. the game sounds totally awesome. My only suggestion though, is to
make it a bit tougher. From the trailer alone, it sounded quite simple. What

I'm really excited about is the trophy system. that's something never
implemented in an audio game, and I'm looking forward to it.
I'm also wondering, how many levels will the game contain?
Keep it up man.
