 Hiya,
Off and on over the past year or so, I've been working at playing
through an old DOS game which Michael reviewed in Issue 1 of Audyssey.
I've not come anywhere close to beating it, and don't want to really.
I've yet to really make it much of anywhere--true, I've gotten fairly
 rich
and found a few rather amazing places, but haven't yet found any real
direction. I don't mind this in the least.
One thing I love about this game, which I haven't found anywhere else,
is a sense of a world with unlimited places to explore. There is this
 odd
sense that if I just keep going in a direction somewhere I'll find
something interesting, or run into a new town, or a new inn, or a new
place where I can appreciate the depth of detail that's offered here.
I've never before encountered a sense like the following:
When the character in Fallthru travels from town to town over roads,
 it
seems like he's really traveling somewhere. I get this odd sense that,
wow, that really did take three days! (That's game time, of course.)
Since I haven't really scratched the surface of this game yet, I have to
wonder what it'll be like if I keep going.
I know this game isn't for everyone. It's tedious and hard to get
anywhere sometimes because you're constantly trying to stay alive. There
are so many places to go that it is hard to choose. I find myself
 setting
out long term goals for spots I want to see and realizing, a few days and
some food later, that I really should've reconsidered. No other game has
 quite given me this feeling.
I'm just curious, therefore, if anybody on this list still plays the
game? If so, does it stay this engrossing all the way through? No,
 don't
answer that. I want to find out for myself.
 All the best,
 Zack.

Then I deleted the config.exe file from the rail racer folder and tried

Before the update, I never had a problem running Rail Racer.
Could someone please help?

Re: [Audyssey] Star wars Game with RPG elements.

sounds good.
At 05:01 a.m. 17/07/2007, you wrote:

Hi all,
I've been pondering a slightly different approach to doing combat in
Rise of the Empire. Basically, what I have been thinking of is adding in
some real time RPG type elements which would not only make each game
completely different, but could really alter the battle system to make
battles more challenging over all. Of course, to the end user most of
this would be transparent as the computer would do the rolls, add the
hit points, etc all in real time. Though in some reguards it would have
the same sort of combat as a d20 dnd game.
For example, when you start a new game it would ask you skill level,
your afiliation such as Jedi or Sith, and then randomly roll for various
stats like your initial stamina, melee rating, force energy, etc...
Bottom line each new game you would end up with a different character
with different strengths and weeknesses.
The really cool part about this would be during combat. Say Starstone is
battling someone like Darth Vader. vader would have extremely good
stamina, melee rating, and generally good stats across the board. So a
saber battle might go like this.
You press the space bar and the computer behind the scenes rolls for
attack damage, and adds your melee rating to that. Let's assume all
total you get a 14. However, immediately after word the computer rolls
for Vader's defensive roll. It gets his defensive roll, adds his melee
rating to it, and stamina. Now, he comes up with 23 on defense. Since
his roll is superior to your attack roll you will hear the two sabers
striking each other, and your saber attack was successfully blocked
resulting in no damage.
Let's say we run an another attack and defense roll and you have an
attack roll of 26 to Vader's 18. You would here Darth Vader shoot off
sparks, and 8 points of health are taken away from his health.
I think the d20 system has a superior advantage when it comes to force
battles with Palpatine. Let's assume you are currently using force
protect and Palpatine is using Force lightning. He raises his hand and
sends a green bolt of lightning your way. You have your protection up,
and depending on the attack and defense rolls plus your own Force and
stamina stats will determine how much of the lightning you successfully
deflected. Then, you might switch to Force stun in attempt to stun
Palpatine, and he will switch to Force protect and the rolls will
determine weather or not your stun attack was successful and for how long.
What do all of you think?

I set a ten minute timer for the room and once the time is up Filch catches

The only way to avoid him is to leave the sweet shop for a second and come

Along with buying candy, you can also find a magical item in the store.

This is Ron's wand. he probably put it down when grabbing candy to eat and
forgot about it.
Of course after he gets home on the train he remembers and has his parent

Re: [Audyssey] An appreciation for Fallthru

2007-07-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
I lost my older message somewhere in the deleted items folder, so I guess
I'll just have to reply here. I just tested the fallthrough application
again, and this time I actually got jaws to say something before the program
closed. It said, Can not execute, and then it gave me the path of the
program and terminated it. Anyone know what's up with this? Is there some
kind of block that stops command boxes from running in windows that can be
removed somewhere? I remember I had this same problem with an old desktop a
while back and could never figure it out there either. Apparently it isn't
jaws, because it lasted a bit longer when I tried that NVDA screen reader,
but it still terminated. Any ideas anyone? Sorry if this is getting a bit
off topic of gaming, I'd just like to give this game another chance.

 Hiya,
Off and on over the past year or so, I've been working at playing
through an old DOS game which Michael reviewed in Issue 1 of Audyssey.
I've not come anywhere close to beating it, and don't want to really.
I've yet to really make it much of anywhere--true, I've gotten fairly
 rich
and found a few rather amazing places, but haven't yet found any real
direction. I don't mind this in the least.
One thing I love about this game, which I haven't found anywhere
 else,
is a sense of a world with unlimited places to explore.
Since I haven't really scratched the surface of this game yet, I have
 to
wonder what it'll be like if I keep going.
I know this game isn't for everyone. It's tedious and hard to get
anywhere sometimes because you're constantly trying to stay alive.
 There
are so many places to go that it is hard to choose. I find myself
 setting
out long term goals for spots I want to see and realizing, a few days
 and
some food later, that I really should've reconsidered. No other game

ell,how nicI like the patch quite a bit! Still trying to complete level 1 on
easy now, but its going well. Quite an nice update, especially since Panama
Joe can run faster now!
Only one problem now, or maybe its not a problem. The way now to exit a
game, is to press the x key, which maybe is not a bad thing tjst having
the shortcut only there. Speaking of exiting, after pressing the X key,
would it be alright if you brought the ending sound from the other Monty
releases? It sounded like a sewer opening.
Had a nice affect!

Nice work on the patch. The sound description is good, as are the new
sounds. I haven't had any problems with the game other than how to defeat
it, but that's the fun part. My first score on easy difficulty after
completing level 2 was 56,900. On was that on normal? Hmm. (grin)

 Hi all,
I have just uploaded Montezuma's Revenge patch 1 to the USA Games web
site. This patch fixes a number of miner bugs and adds some extra
features such as a sound descriptions menu. You can check it out at
 http://www.usagames.us.
In adddition the Montezuma's Revenge Changes.txt file found in the
Montezuma's Revenge installation directory gives a complete list of

I set a ten minute timer for the room and once the time is up Filch catches

The only way to avoid him is to leave the sweet shop for a second and come
back in, so you get another ten minutes.
Along with buying candy, you can also find a magical item in the store.

This is Ron's wand. he probably put it down when grabbing candy to eat and

Of course after he gets home on the train he remembers and has his parent

[Audyssey] a little problem with the instalation of the monte patch

2007-07-17 Thread nicol
HI thom
I have installed the monte patch, I haven't tried it out yet. I just want
to make you attentive to something.
When I click on the file that I have downloaded it says welcome to the
patch, it will upgrade your installation.
When I then press the ok button on that message box a dialogue comes up
asking me to which folder I want to unzip the files to and it says c:program
files\usa games, but during the install of the initial beta, the path is
d:\program files\usa games because that is where all my games is installed.
During the install of the initial beta, the installer automatically picks up
that windows is running on the d drive and so it automatically gives the
path d:\program files\usa games as the default, but now with this patch it
doesn't give me a chance to change the path where to extract the files to,
it automatically extracts it to c:PROGRAM FILES\USA GAMES, so I had to
manually cut that usa games folder on the c drive and paste it in the d
drive.
Its just something to keep in mind for future patches, rather create the
self extracting zip file in such a way that the user can specify the path
for extraction.
thanks

[Audyssey] monte

2007-07-17 Thread nicol
Nice patch, thom. I like the sound descriptions.
When the original beta was released, I wasn't at all aware that it was a
spider, I thought it was one of those burning ropes.
Thom, I personally feel one should be able to kill snakes.
Now I recognize the warp platform' sound; its exactly the same sound used in
self destruct as a background sound.
There is a big improvement in the patch, in the original monty there were
more than one staircase in a room which made navigation confusing, now there
is only one staircase per room.
I'm definitely going to buy monte if my friend can't afford it. It's a game
I will definitely enjoy.
A further suggestion is to have a monte competition. The one with the
highest score on a difficulty level win the extra temple packs. It's a good
idea to sell extra temple packs, but if one can get a chance to win those,
it would be cool.
Keep it up

[Audyssey] German language pack for Rail Racer

2007-07-17 Thread Sarah Haake
Hi again :-)

I just downloaded the german languagepack for Rail Racer.
It's really great that someone actually did sound files in German.
Unfortunately, not every human spoken item in the game has a german
counterpart.
The only things that are spoken in German are the Welcome at the beginning,
the Back to the real World at the end and a few, but not all items in the
main menue.
Is there a bug in the pack or are there simply no files for the rest?
It would be really great if there could be german files for all human spoken
items in the game.

But nevertheless, it's really great to have a german voice spaking the
menue!

Great job and thanks!

[Audyssey] Bug in Monty Patch?

Hi Thomas,
I think I've located a possible bug in the Monty patch. I've noticed that, on

They don't seem to bite when I get close as long as I'm carrying one, but it's
like when I get close enough to one I can only move a few steps at a time, as
if I'm repeatedly having to kick the snake out of my way. Spiders and skulls
aren't affected by this, just the snakes. It's actually pretty bizarre.

Lol are the units in SoundRts blind? I say this because I sometimes
 hear
units walking into walls. Also once when I had 7 footmen an archer and
 3

walking sound and he went nowhere. Then I sent him somewhere else and
heard him continuously bonking against the wall, still going nowhere.
Also I would like to see a feature to fire units. I had to let the
peasants commit suicide by walking into the enemy camp when I wanted a
 bigger army. Lol!

Re: [Audyssey] a little problem with the instalation of the monte patch

Re: [Audyssey] monte

2007-07-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
After I had released the Monty beta 1 initial release someone emailed me
a copy of the original 1983 Montezuma's Revenge rules and directions. In
that list of rules I discovered that snakes could not be killed so i
removed them being killed in patch 1. In addition I got the official
score table so I reset the score table to match the 1983 arcade classic.
The point of all the changes is to make this version as close as
possible to the classic without changing the game too much with newer
and fresh ideas. I'll let future versions add newer ideas slip in.

nicol wrote:

Thom, I personally feel one should be able to kill snakes.
Now I recognize the warp platform' sound; its exactly the same sound used in
self destruct as a background sound.
There is a big improvement in the patch, in the original monty there were
more than one staircase in a room which made navigation confusing, now there
is only one staircase per room.
I'm definitely going to buy monte if my friend can't afford it. It's a game

Re: [Audyssey] Bug in Monty Patch?

2007-07-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
The answer to your question is found in the Changes.txt file which
shipped with the patch. Basically, after I released beta 1 I recieved a
copy of the original 1983 instructions. In there i discovered that
snakes couldn't be killed, and so I removed that ability from the game.
Now, you are right there seams to be some odd behavior happening in
their AI now as a result of that change. I'll certainly look into the AI
issue,and correct it.

games with team mates. And for monty, for example, have it where only two
players could race each other in special temples, jumpping over platforms,
firepits, ride on those convairbelts, and of course the person that makes it
 to the exit wins!
Also, before enter the portal, the person would have to type in the
character name they'd typed in the options menu.
And special messages could be posted there, and a person would press M
to read them. Anyone like this idea?
This idea is sort of like how the ESP Softworks score servers worked. What
was good about them, was the fact you would read a person's name from the
score-server. I wish that Draconis to be honest with ya all, kept the way
how how the server originally was. My this is gonna be an interesting idea!

 Hi,
In one way I do agree networked games brings allot more challenge to the
games as you are facing a human aponent. However, the down side to this
is that if you log on to play against someone and there is no one around
at 1:00 AM in the morning when you want to play you can't do much with
 that game.
I'm on the run allot, and if I had to be online to play a game I would
hardly get a chanse to play. Especially, when in the car riding from
here to there. That's the down side to networked games unfortunately.
Probably someday I will crank out a networked game, but it will have to
wait for my current batch of projects to clear. (Smile)

It's true, there are some good network games, but we need more. We
need games to play with others, not only by ourselves. I am, I
suppose, a networking crusader...when I finally begin to program, most
of my games will, hopefully, feature at least multiplayer modes, if
 not networking modes.

 That's just me though.

Re: [Audyssey] beep

hmm, it's changing from time to time as i'm constantly getting new ideas and
suggestions for it. the basic outline is you disarm bombs in buildings,
fight guards and robots, pick up objects and take part in contests. other
than that the content is changing all the time, as development is restarting
shortly.

  HI damion
Don't feel bad about releasing beep. Its your first attempt to write a
  program, that's a good start.
Although it is not a challenging game, its a good start for someone who
  try
out programming for the first time.
The song you used in the game is cool.

Re: [Audyssey] Toomb Raider was new game

2007-07-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Awesome! I just downloaded all the music files, and happily been
enjoying myself listening to the Tomb Raider music which I remember from
my own sighted PC gamer days.
You know, if I could get my hands on the actual effects shut gun sounds,
swords, pain, etc I might be willing to do one or two TR games using the
Star Wars game engine which is well suited for the full blown 3D FPS genre.
Personally, my favorites were Tomb Raider II and Tomb Raider IV. Angel
of Darkness was cool, but the story took a huge turn which made it much
darker than the previous five games.
I also know Angel of Darkness didn't have the same level of puzzle
solving which made the first four games fun.
As for myself the puzzles were just as much fun as Lora's battles with
Sharks, Yetti, Crocks, and other cool creatures.
I suppose I can dig around for my copies of the games and wrip the
sounds myself, but what a serious pain.

Hi Bryan,
Yeah, that was why I took out the strange effect James North was using.
In trying to create Monty I am attempting to give each item a very
realistic sound scheme.
