But at least we can talk and let these accessibility groups that are forming in SL that we do, indeed, exist. To look at this, head on over to http://www.movablelife.net. Also, there are sevral accessibility related blogs on SL, but the most active one is at http://blindsecondlife.blogspot.com. Well, I think some people want to really make this thing accessible. A health island about disibilities formed where people can go and learn about disibilities, so at least people in the SL world do care. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Views On Games was Out of the games dimension
I didn't know much about it all until I stumbled on to it in about 1996. I was on the old now dead henrichson site and found all these files called audxx.zip where the xx was the number of the issue. I was borred enough to download it all and read all 21 or so issues, actually I think at that time there were something like 16-17 issues. I got on the mail lists and I was with the crowd upto electronic distrobutions on email. Ok I have had my ups and downs, I've seen entire hacker and comunity battles, I've even taken the wrong side and things, my track record hasn't been the best shell we say but it seems ok I think for the last year at least maybe 2. I'm interested for the audacity mag though to now we are in 2008 that we should have a history of the mag, where it came from and where it was going to go to. I also think we are ready to go to the next step of the mag, that being audio recordings of it, each dev etc says their bit, interviews over skype or whatever are recorded if possible etc. I don't have much hardware and I probably will have to use quickmix loads, and speech will come in to the mag but we are not exactly a pro mag. I'd be happy to produce this as long as all audio bits came to me in the right time, I am thinking to do some tech thing, I can use mediafire for uploading, I mean I doubt we will use loads and loads of files, however. I do understand that you may have to have a text version and for articles that can not be recorded in audio I can read the things out with speech synths in notepad. I don't want people to put themselves out though. Oh Before I forget I am probably going to not put the emails and letters in as its probably going to be a real pain ofcause if some of you that send letters can record voice wise great. If not I can probably read those to. I am probably going to get a job soon but except for the x-sight testing and maybe other tests I have nothing else to do. I am also thinking about doing a podcast of this thing maybe. I don't know if I should set up something on net radio or what, or what is best. My origional idea was to send via mediafire or usendit the link to the completed mp3 then if someone wanted to broadcast/ podcast they could. I accept that I probably will not replace the text version of the mag at least not in the short term. What does everyone think of this. Hi, Quote It was like back in like 1990 that I first got on line and got into the FidoNet Email lists such as Blink Talk and Blind Talk. That and searching the BBSs was how I found that there was a need to share the games that I was producing for my own playability. End quote Wow! I wasn't even aware you had been writing games that long. Though, back in 1990 I still had some useful vision, and was still playing Super NES and other games of that era. I didn't write my first text game until 1998, and at that time I didn't even know there was an Audyssey comunity. Like allot of others in the general blind comunity I didn't even know there was an Audyssey mag, list, and games out there for us. So I wrote some black jack, hangman, and other games thinking I was the first to come up with the idea. It was only after I discovered Audyssey that I learned there were others out here with the same thoughts and ideas I had. Quote Ok, it just sounded to me like you were saying that games like that were useless and people shouldn't even waste time making them because no one would even want to play them. End quote No, actually card games, board games, and word puzzles are still in high demand. I recently ran a poll on the Mac Visionaries mailing list and the majority of requests were for games similar to your Casino and Monopoly games. Mac users seamed less interested in First Person, Side-Scrollers, and other action style games I generally like to play. As it so happens the card, board, and word puzzle games are about the easiest types of games for me to create so I am not at all unhappy they requested something easier to design. The First Person games like Tomb Rader and the Racing simulations like Raceway requires allot of jeometry and real time physics which is allot more work than just a puzzle or board game. As it happens there are a few board games that are really cool that have never been created in accessible format such as Dark World, Battle Masters, and Futile. probably not your style of game, but they are basically games dealing with Knights, Footman, Dwarfs, Goblins, Skeleton Warriors, etc played out on battle fields. I have always been a fan of the strategy style board games. Large and small skale military campaigns and things like that. Quote We sure have come along way since the days of the dos games where we didn't have a sound file playing engine like DirectX. I thought that it was very exciting when David openly here asked for input and worked on creating the first accessible live action first person shooter game. End quote Yes, DirectX

Hi Thomas, Yeah, I started writing computer video games like in 1981 on a Texas Instruments 99 4A home computer. The first games were draw poker, Star Mule and Homer on a Harley (Eval Kneval) I then got my first talking computer in December of 1989. It was a NEC 286 with an Accent S A running Jaws for dos version 1. The first program that I wrote was a braille reference guide. I wrote it in January 1990 while at the Cleveland Sight Center. Anna Karr my braille instructor helped me to make sure that it was all correct. Then I wrote black jack and draw poker. Those games were on the Jaws web site slash BBS. No, I did not like the bookshelf game Futile. I very much liked the bookshelf game Twixt though. Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS and Python version?
Hi Thomas, I will include the additional python 2.5 compiled files in the next release, but build a Linux package only if you really want or need to, because for future releases I would have problems (or lack of time) to automate the Linux build from my computer. Jean-Luc 2008/1/23, Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi, Ah, I do see why you were using Python 2.4. Debian is notorious for supporting older stuff long after Fedora, Ubuntu, and other distributions have upgraded to a version or two ahead to the latest packages. Though, if you would do it I would really really appreciate it if you could make a 2.5 build for me. In return I could take your sounds and pic files and create a nice dpkg package for Debian and Ubuntu Linux systems for easy installation with a shell script to run python and launch it out of the box for Linux gamers interested in your game. If not what I could do is build Python 2.4, install it to a non-standard location like /opt, and run it by setting some export flags to it. -- SoundRTS web site: http://jlpo.free.fr/soundrts SoundRTS development log: http://soundrts.blogspot.com/ SoundRTSChat mailing list: http://groups.google.com/group/soundrtschat --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Sryth-The Silver Crest.
Actually, you need the Tome of FOrgotten Lore, which is the massive leather tome you got from Stoneback Hill. Then you have to go to Marl's Wood and fight the nine battles with Taro-Zar-Huul. You need Lore and Arcana both at sixty to invoke the magic. Show the sorceress the tome and she'll replace the missing gems. Now with regard to the scroll cases from Rynduil, just use one of them as you would any item. You'll open all three and the pages will appear in the Tome. Incidentally, after unlocking the TOme of Forgotten Lore, you can visit Tallys for another page. Right now there are only four, but they're handy to have. [Audyssey] RTS Games was Risk
Hi Jean'Luc, Yeah, Galcon sounds pretty cool. I've always had an interest in strategy and real time strategy type games of that type. One game I am becoming a huge fan of, but it isn't very accessible, is Galaxy Civilization. I just love the concept of starting out with one planet, one shuttle type ship, and you build factories, research centers, farms, etc to build up your space fleet and concore the galaxy if you can. SoundMUD wrote: This reminds me of an RTS game demo I have played recently. It's probably totally inaccessible because it is heavily mouse based, but its principles may be interesting. It's called Galcon. It's a very simplified RTS, with no tech tree, no buildings, no workers, and yet a very interesting game. There are only planets, with different production rate. If you own one of them, it creates new battle ships. The only thing you have to decide is in which planet you send them. In a multiplayer game I have played, the players started expanding, without going too far, avoiding premature conflicts with their neighbors; then, when all the available planets were conquered, the players did nothing for a long time, just moving their ships randomly; they used a chat system too (a voice chat would have been even better), for example to stop a conflict that would have left the 2 opponents behind the others; and then suddenly one player attacked another one, sometimes triggering the attack of another player, trying to take the opportunity, etc. A game lasted about 5 to 15 minutes. Very interesting game because relatively simple, so you can focus on the diplomatic aspect. Probably like in Risk. Hi Shaun, I don't think creating an audio based Audyssey magazine is all that good an idea. For one thing I enjoy reading the articles, and you can fit allot more content into a magazine rather than an audio style podcast. For another have you ever considdered the size of an audio based Audyssey magazine? I know some of the blind tech podcasts are large enough, and a magazine of any size at all would be huge. Finally, when you record articles and interviews that is a podcast not a magazine. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Sryth-The Silver Crest.
Then you obviously don't have the tome. If you got it from Stoneback Hill, take it to the ruins in the forsts outside Marl's Wood and fight the battles with the Catamarok. Then invoke the magic (you need Arcana and Lore at level 60) and show the tome to the sorceress. Just use it as an item when she asks you for it. She'll replace the gems and you'll be able to use the tome. Then all you have to do is go to the hidden room in the Silver Crest headquarters and use one of the scroll cases. It should work then. [Audyssey] the games jim and marcy made together
Hi jim I have a couple of questions regarding the games you and marcy made together. 1. in the snakes and ladders game, what did marcy help you with in the game. In other words, what part of the game development did she fulfill? 2. the sound which plays in your pong game when either me or the computer fails to return the volley, that sound is very interesting. I'm very curious how this sound is physically produced. Is it an electronic synthetic sound or is it something in real life which also makes that same sound. To me it sounds rather synthetic, but maybe there is something in real life which also makes that same sound. 3. which other games did you and marcy made and which role did she fulfill in development of those games? Did she fulfill any other role in the pong game than doing the voice over? 4. I really like your pong game, but I can't beat the computer on easy difficulty. The beginner level is too easy for me, it gets borring, I win the computer each time, but the easy level is tricky, its now the fifth match I play on the easy level and the computer wins me each time. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. [Audyssey] BOPIT
I HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR BOPIT. AND PLEASE ROB AND PARAM, SEE IT ASa suggestion, not as a complaint. Oops, my caps lock was on during the first few lines, didn't meant to scream; am to lazy to convert it. I'm just making it clear beforehand, this is a suggestion how I would like to see the game in future releases, because my suggestions for lightcars was taken up very very negatively by robjoy. Ok here goes. I would like to have a mode in bopit where you instead of presssing the 6 bopit buttons have to press letters, numbers and punctuation keys. Because there is a bug in keyboard crazy, a game developed by vip games zone. In keyboard crazy, I'm not sure how to press a punctuation mark requiring shift. If the voice says slash I can press it successfully and get a point. Say for instance the voice says slash out of the left speaker then I press control and then slash, but now the voice says question mark. The game is too fast, I can't figure out, should I press shift on its own and then slash or should I hold down shift. When the voice says question mark, by the time I press shift before I can press slash it explodes and I loose a life. So it would be sooo cool, it would rock if bopit could have a mode where you have to press punctuations, letters and numbers. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Hi Phil, I actually asked JJ about that because I definately thought Sarah should have been on that list, but he said it was released in 2006, I'm not sure where he got his info. I myself did not even know of the awards until today, so I am not sure who nominated RR for it, he said several folks nominated it, but didn't tell me who. Hi Che, First, I'd like to congratulate you on your award for Rail Racer. I really think you earned it this year. However, I am really surprised that no one on this list either knew or mentioned that this voting for best accessible game was going on. The web site states that they polled hundreds of voters, and yet the largest comunity of blind gamers wasn't told about the voting? What is up with that? As for your idea of the list having its own yearly voting for awards or games etc I really like the idea. I'll talk to Kevin and Raul and see what they think. this is a surprise to me as well. there's certainly been nothing about it on the audiogames.net forum as far as I know. I don't know if they counted that 2006 beta of Sarah as a release (slightly odd if they did), but if so, then by that logic where was Monti? Not to mention sound rts, Bg Word targit and Uno, Treasuremania, chopper patrol, wrecking ball and quite a few others. I deffinately think Audeasy should run a similar set of awards, and as Thom suggested, multiple catagories of awards as well. It's something lots of gaming organizations from magazines to companies have done with graphical games (including freeware and shareware ones), for years, and actually thinking about it I'm slightly surprised we haven't. Re: [Audyssey] 2007 Accessible game of the year
Hi Phil, Don't feel bad Montezuma's Return didn't receive one vote either. Actually, I am surprise Sarah wasn't even listed. Someone should talk to them and ask them why Sarah wasn't even considered for the 2007 awards, and why on earth if they were going to do them not to poll this list. I'm still miffed about that. I understand why Montezuma's Return might not have been considered seeing it was only in Beta testing, but there was no excuse for Sarah not to be listed. Re: [Audyssey] 2007 Accessible game of the year
Hi Che, That is correct. Sarah was in beta testing throughout 2005 and 2006, but wasn't officially released until 2007. So wherever JJ got his information was flat out wrong, and should be corrected immediately. I am not saying you did not deserve the award, because Rail Racer is a darn good game. However, I equally hate seeing Phil's Sarah game get shafted out of being recognised as a nomination since it was an equally good game, and should have been factored in the voting. Someone should write JJ and have them put up a public apology for this oversight, and then tell them next time to get their facts strait. Further more, the entire voting thing about having hundreds of people voting sounds fishy to me. There is a list of 200 hundred members on this list and not one person said anything about the voting? The developers didn't even know about their games were up for an award? Am I missing something or did this thing just come out of the blue, and are they doing this as a total insider thing? Although, I am beginning to think about your previous suggestion of doing something like this on the list. We could pick a panel of judges, obviously non-developers, to test and play the games, and they could judge, or set up a voting list to vote for the best games in certain catagories in January of each year. What are your thoughts? Che wrote: Hi Phil, I actually asked JJ about that because I definately thought Sarah should have been on that list, but he said it was released in 2006, I'm not sure where he got his info. Hi, I seam to remember everyone talking about kicking the idea around, but I don't think it ever got done. Perhaps we can talk to Ron and some well known folks in the comunity and try and get a best ggame of 2007 awards thing going on Audyssey.org. If this is something of interest to people perhaps I can ask Raul for the web site login information and write a nice php feedback form which sends all the voting results to Ron or someone who will count and tally the results for 2007. Re: [Audyssey] 2007 Accessible game of the year
Hi Che, As far as I know at this point neither the Audyssey list or the Audio Games forum were informed that this vote was going on. All I can guess is that JJ must have run it through some lists they own or use and perhaps they figured that word would spread to the rest of the blind comunity by word of mouth or by someone forwarding announcements to key lists. I really don't know. I do know nothing was passed through this list or I would have seen it. After I get up tomorrow I plan to email JJ and ask him how they selected their voters, and secondly ask him to please post announcements of this nature to the Audyssey owner address so Raul and I can pass the rest of the info on to the list. I am certain that you, Charles, and I aren't the only ones who were left totally in the dark about this vote. As for hosting our own awards it is no problem. I plan to talk to Raul first thing tomorrow about it, and if he agrees with it I will write up a php form to handle the voting, and either Raul or I could put it on the Audyssey.org site to do the awards.
