I tried it out once, but it had too much dry humor in the descs for my liking. The game seemed to have no real direction, and the strategy element sounded more player cooperative rather than solo base or planet building, and there were too many limiters in place from what I read on the site for my tastes. I tried it a bit ago, but in a lot of ways, it became a lot like Meriani minus out of locals missions and combat. You ran cargo, got money for said cargo, got a bigger ship, so you could run more cargo and make more money. Eventually you'd get to where you're doing more stock trading, but even that can get tedius. Hello. By itself, the game, I think, comes with two old-time stadiums. The rest of the stadiums you have to buy with stadium discs which are also listed along with the season discs on the website. With that said, I really haven't noticed any differences in game play if you just use a regular old stadium full time, although they try to build stadium and weather effects into the game. Again, this is a very old game as far as computer games go, and no real updates have been done to it since 1998 or 1999. Granted, new season and stadium discs are still being created, but the actual engine and core of the game have not been updated in ages. Regarding its accessibility with a screen reader, the menus for starting a game or exiting, in other words, your basic menu bar is accessible without the jaws cursor. Picking teams once you get to the teams selection dialog are listboxes and buttons, so really you can use your pc cursor for that. During game play you will have to use your jaws cursor for making player changes, pitching changes, and that kind of thing. No, that is part of the actual menu system, but there are shortcut keys you can use during a game. I must admit, since I accidentally threw my apba cd into the garbage while moving five years ago, I haven't played it since then. And when I can afford it, I will get another copy unless they come out with a new version, which I am sort of waiting for. But, I really hated accidentally throwing the game into the trash! grin. [Audyssey] What I've been up to
Hello. People have probably noticed I've not been as verbal in the past while, --- both here and on the audiogames.net forums. Partly this is due to me actually getting some work done for a change, but also this is because I've been investigating a really interesting game, the dungeon exploration Roguelike Angband. I found that mucking about with certain graphical options and changing tile size made the game's display visible for me, and of course Hal would read the text without any trouble. I've tried roguelikes before, but found the ascii graphics too small to see, and too confusing with a screen reader, however Angband's graphical tile set does work for me. I've been having discussions on the forum and E-mailing the game's maintainer about making a few changes to the game to allow it to be played without reference to the graphics, ascii or otherwise. There are already several really useful options, such as the ability to list all visible monsters and items on screen at a key press, the ability to click betwene interesting objects, and to targit them remotely without having to use direction. I believe that if a coordinates system for examined objects, a directional look command, and possibly some extra messages about uncovered exits, the game would be entirely playable without reference to the graphics, simply as a grid based, complex rpg with a heavy combat basis. I'm pleased to say I got the following response from the maintainer recently: Thanks very much for the email. I did read the forum thread, but for various reasons haven't had time to fully consider what you've written yet. I will file bugs on the bug tracker for what you suggest and hopefully get them in for the 3.1.2 release. Andi Sinse the current release is 3.10, this might be a while, stil I do find it encouraging. Angband is a fantastic game, and what's more, has innumerable varients which use the same game engine (and thus would also be accessible), and I deffinately hope more people will find it easier to play soon. Yes, I will agree with you. I think they had bigger plans back when the prices were set all those years ago. Apba board game fans spend a lot of money on cards and that kind of thing, so I am guessing that they were hoping they could get the same kind of response from a computer game. I agree, considering what the industry has done, it is a lot of money to plunk down for a game. By itself, the game, I think, comes with two old-time stadiums. The rest of the stadiums you have to buy with stadium discs which are also listed along with the season discs on the website. With that said, I really haven't noticed any differences in game play if you just use a regular old stadium full time, although they try to build stadium and weather effects into the game. Again, this is a very old game as far as computer games go, and no real updates have been done to it since 1998 or 1999. Granted, new season and stadium discs are still being created, but the actual engine and core of the game have not been updated in ages. Regarding its accessibility with a screen reader, the menus for starting a game or exiting, in other words, your basic menu bar is accessible without the jaws cursor. Picking teams once you get to the teams selection dialog are listboxes and buttons, so really you can use your pc cursor for that. During game play you will have to use your jaws cursor for making player changes, pitching changes, and that kind of thing.
