Hi Paulette,

There are a number of text adventure game toolkits and languages and
there is no one size fits all solution. Here is a list of the more
common ones with websites for you to look at.

Adrift 5.0
http://www.adrift.org.uk

This is primarily an adventure and development toolkit for Windows
games. The Adrift Generator uses a dialog based wizard for developing
text adventures. It is a great starting place for beginners because
there is little to no programming involved.

Inform 7
http://www.inform7.com

Inform 7 is an interactive fiction design system that uses natural
language and samantics to create complex text adventures. It is fully
cross-platform, and is one of the most widely used and supported text
adventure systems today.

Tads 3
http://www.tads.org

TADS is a free authoring system for writing your own Interactive
Fiction. It offers a complete set

of programming tools for creating high-quality interactive fiction.
Besides the popular interactive fiction and text adventure systems
mentioned above you can just as easily use an off the shelf language
like Python

http://www.python.org
to develop high quality text adventures as well.

Cheers!

Hi paulette.

Hope the site is useful. Actually you don't need to register just to look at
the games database, that's available to anyone, though if you are registered
you can post on the forum, and you'd be very welcome.

As I said, there's really nothing to stop you trying games out, since even
the commercial ones have demos, so I hope you find something you like.
Christmas whoopass is amusing to pass a bit of time it's true.

Hi Paulette.

it's a little difficult to suggest other types of games, since I don't
know

what you may like.

For instance, there are now audio games just using sound in catagories
from

arcade and fast action, to horror shooter, to racing, rpg and stratogy.
There are traditional card, puzzle or board games, going up to and
including

online ones with multiplayer features right up to high competitive online
poker or hearts with full tournaments (though luckily not with real
money).
There are online brouser games that let you build and control an empire,
and

gamebooks which function slightly like if games, but without typing
commands.there are brouser rpgs and stratogy games too that play with a
screen reader.

That's indeed why I gave you the links to www.audiogames.net and
www.pcsgames.net, sinse really the only way to determine whether you might
like something is to give it a try, and even the games that are sold
commercially have demos to try.

Indeed, by trying games in genres that I myself wouldn't normally try,
I've

found some fun experiences.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Hi Paulette.

the link I gave was to the page on the Ifiction site where the adventure
game started, along with several others.

That is a site that lets you play various if titles online, so is worth
searching if you enjoy interactive fiction, - though I must admit I
tend
to prefer having the games downloaded myself and running with
interpreters

like winfrtoz or wintads since the sites don't seem as quick at taking
your
commands.

then again, i don't really play much if anymore, since I got sick of
games

with illogical puzzles, so the Ifiction site might have changed sinse I
last
tried it.

Glad you found it useful though.

Hi Dark,

I went there and actually found the game, just like it used to be,
except
that you now have to use edit boxes. But that isn't a problem. I did
have

to
do a bit of searching to find the site, though. The link you gave me did
not
take me to the adventure game. It talked about an elevator game and also
had
the adventure link. So, for anyone who wants it, here is the link to the

voice over reads all buttons, only two buttons in the first screen are
unlabeled but one of them is options and the other i don't remember, you
can simple tap it to find it out.
this game is a simulation game, during gameplay you will have the old ms
dos prompt and your objective is to hack an organization, reading
e-mails of users, accessing their data, accessing websites(the game even
has an web browser for you to view the sites, and voice overs reads
 all!)
in the upper part of the screen the text that appears will be displayed.
note that you can't flick left and right to read this text, you need to
touch the upper part of the screen and still with your finger on the
screen move just a bit down to continue reading everything, you will get
 used to it.
and in the lower part of the screen we have the normal keyboard which
you can type commands. there's a help system for everything and the game
has a very detailed ints system, allowing you to view the correct answer
for a level if you are completely stuck.
the game will require you to be connected to the internet because to
access the ints system in the options it will search online, and to view
websites with clues when you're playing you will also need to be online,
the interesting thing that i found is that all websites mentioned in the
storyline are real, obviously the company created them for the games,
 but it's quite nice.
also if you play the start of this game you will think pretty basic...
but i imagine the paid version and the other two games in the series
are much much harder and have more content.
lastly, this game doesn't help you hack in real life by any means, it's
more of a puzzle game combining a bit of simulation and the idea of

Hi Kieth.

No idea on the ai thing, but lonewolf is on the gmagames site, indeed I am

kieth, I do very much suggest you look at the pcs games list at
www.pcsgames.net and the audiogames.net database at www.audiogames.net, both
are the best places to look at games and will give you a much better
overview than you just asking about whatever games we happen to mention on
list.

There are lots of good games we might not discuss, plus of course it's
always better to make up your own mind on these things and see for yourself
what is available. The audiogames.net db comes with hopefully informative
descriptions of the games with links to resources, and also the facility to
search by genre, while the fantastic games and where to find them list at
pcs serves as a massive list of websites so is great for an overview.

[Audyssey] ios: zday survival(haven't tested!)

2012-04-26 Thread Matheus Rheine
hey everybody! here's one more game for ios, but this one i haven't
bought yet and there's no free version, it costs $1.99, so if you're
interested in trying it out, if it works i'll definitely buy it, it's a
text based game, i'll past the description bellow:

For iPad, check out the HD version.
Universal application. Requires iOS 4.2 and higher. Works on all iPhones
and iPod touch, including older devices such as iPhone 3G and iPod touch
2G.
NOT COMPATIBLE with iPad 3, see HD version for iPad 3.

For those of a certain age who loved adventure game books, it’s the
perfect app to play and one that players will find themselves returning
to. Not least because they’ll have to be pretty skilled to ‘win’!

4 out of 5 stars - Jennifer Allen, 148 Apps.com

I've been having a blast with this since it's essentially gameifies
what runs through my head whenever I read or watch a piece of zombie
content, but it's also solid production-wise. I heartily recommend this
to anyone that still has an itch for zombies, or even an appreciation of
primarily text-based titles.

~ 4/5 stars - Brad Nicholson, Toucharcade

ZDAY is a 21st century text-based Simulator game that puts you the
player in tough, real-world situations. The game play is easy and you
can soon control it well.

~ 4/5 stars - Top10app.com

4/5 Stars - Dan Zuccarelli, Gamezebo.com

What better way to survive a full blown apocalypse than to PRACTICE?
This is not a traditional shooter or an arcade style game where you poke
buttons to shoot digital bullets at virtual zombies. ZDAY is a 21st
century text-based Simulator that puts you the player in tough,
real-world situations and says what would YOU do?.

Beautifully illustrated by renowned DC comics artist Matt Haley, ZDAY is
an intelligent adventure game that starts you in a crowded suburb at
ground zero of a full blown infection, and says what would you do?.
Faced with one scenario after another, the player has to make choices
that will either lead him to escape the zombie-filled suburbs or perish
like so many others. The sophisticated game engine keeps track of every
decision that you make, and keeps a running tab on your survival
probability based on the choices you make.
So keep your wits about you, and choose carefully, because one wrong
move could have you facing a zombie horde or roving bands of
trigger-happy looters.
The detailed results given after the player has completed the challenge
provides very useful insight to what he may have done right and wrong.
If the player wants to try again he can, and since the game engine
reshuffles many of the exact events, ZDAY Survival Simulator is never
exactly the same twice.

ZDAY Survival Simulator is soon going to be posting free updates to
expand the content and experience, but be warned, they won't get any
easier.

Re: [Audyssey] I'm gonna get me a game today!

2012-04-26 Thread dark

Hi Paulette.

With most games on windows, the process is very easy, and Christmas whoopass
is no exception.

Just hit the download link (you can use the one on audiogames.net or use the
developers' own site, audiogames.net just gives it for convenience), then
you will be asked if you want to download the file, and whether you want to
run or save it.

Generally, you will want to save it, because that file contains the program
for the game, so hit save. I personally have a downloads folder where I save
anything I download to, but you can save it whereever you wish.

then you'll have to wait while it downloads. This won't take long, though
can vary according to what type of internet connection you have and how
large the file is, but mostly shouldn't take long. when it is downloaded, if
it's an .exe file, ie a program that is ready to just install (like
christmass whoopass is), just go and find it with windows explorer and hit
enter on it.

An install program will pop up which will put the game onto your computer.
It'll ask you what folder to install the game in (it'll choose C:\program
files by default), and where to put shortcuts to start the game, but mostly
you can just go through hitting the next button.

Once all this is done, you'll find the shortcuts for running the game
usually straight in your programs menue, and can read the instructions or
run the game straight off.

Thsi is also the way you run and install any program from the internet that
could be useful to you, so it's good knolidge to have.

Of course some games are not install .exe files, adn may come in a zip
folder instead, those aren't hard to deal with either though, however I
won't clutter this message up with an explanation of that as well when your
just trying to get used to downloading and installing straight off, should
you come across a game which is a zip, let us know and myself, or someone
else can explain how to deal with this (which isn't really a harder process,
just a different one).

Hope you enjoy christmas woopass, and any other games you fancy trying.

All the best,

Dark.

Never open it from the site. Download it to your PC, and run it from there.
Opening stuff from a site like that is just asking to get infected with a
virus.

When downloading, tab through the fields. One of them is save to, and you
can use this to see where the file will be saved. If it isn't where you
want to save it, up or down arrow to find where you want to save it, then
hit enter. Then hit enter on the save button. HTH.

Sometimes, rather than doing that, I will write some sort of warning like
this:

Here is a possible spoiler for the problem asked about, so if you don't want
it, either delete it or save for later if you might need it. Now that we've
gotten that out of the way, here's my solution:

This would be enough text so that those who don't want the solution can

 Hi Paulette,

It is considered good list etiquette to let readers know that a spoiler
is coming so they can close the e-mail before viewing the spoiler. The
reason Charles and many others spell the word out putting each letter on a

separate line is a sighted convention used on many mailing lists to force
a sighted reader to scroll down to find the spoiler rather than having it
appear on the same screen. We observe this convention here even though
with a screen reader its less necessary for us to do so.

 Cheers!

Hi Paulette,

There are a number of text adventure game toolkits and languages and there
is no one size fits all solution. Here is a list of the more common ones
with websites for you to look at.

Adrift 5.0
http://www.adrift.org.uk

This is primarily an adventure and development toolkit for Windows games.
The Adrift Generator uses a dialog based wizard for developing text
adventures. It is a great starting place for beginners because there is
little to no programming involved.

Inform 7
http://www.inform7.com

Inform 7 is an interactive fiction design system that uses natural language
and samantics to create complex text adventures. It is fully cross-platform,
and is one of the most widely used and supported text adventure systems
today.

Tads 3
http://www.tads.org

TADS is a free authoring system for writing your own Interactive Fiction. It
offers a complete set of programming tools for creating high-quality
interactive fiction.
Besides the popular interactive fiction and text adventure systems mentioned
above you can just as easily use an off the shelf language like Python
http://www.python.org to develop high quality text adventures as well.

Cheers!

HTH.

Hi Keith,

I don't remember the exact name of the game app now, but here is how you can

Go to PCS Games, then do a search for the word, phone, open that link and
search for the word, cave. That will take you to the link. I hope that
helps.

Re: [Audyssey] I'm gonna get me a game today!

2012-04-26 Thread dark

Hi paulette.

If your using window eyes, you probably just need to turn the voice off to
prevent speech interupting you in the game.

With jaws you need to utterly unload the screen reader and quit the program
because of the way jaws handles the keyboard, but for most screen readers
it's not necessary, in supernova for example I just hit control 0 to shut
the voice off, and sometimes controls 8 to shut the keys off if the game
needs some of the same keys supernova uses such as the numberpad (though
this isn't always necessary).

Perhaps someone who uses window eyes as their main screen reader could give
more information on this.

Hi Paulette.

With most games on windows, the process is very easy, and Christmas
whoopass

is no exception.

Just hit the download link (you can use the one on audiogames.net or use
the

developers' own site, audiogames.net just gives it for convenience), then
you will be asked if you want to download the file, and whether you want
to

run or save it.

Generally, you will want to save it, because that file contains the
program
for the game, so hit save. I personally have a downloads folder where I
save

anything I download to, but you can save it whereever you wish.

then you'll have to wait while it downloads. This won't take long, though
can vary according to what type of internet connection you have and how
large the file is, but mostly shouldn't take long. when it is downloaded,
if

it's an .exe file, ie a program that is ready to just install (like
christmass whoopass is), just go and find it with windows explorer and hit
enter on it.

An install program will pop up which will put the game onto your computer.
It'll ask you what folder to install the game in (it'll choose C:\program
files by default), and where to put shortcuts to start the game, but
mostly

you can just go through hitting the next button.

Once all this is done, you'll find the shortcuts for running the game
usually straight in your programs menue, and can read the instructions or
run the game straight off.

Thsi is also the way you run and install any program from the internet
that

could be useful to you, so it's good knolidge to have.

Of course some games are not install .exe files, adn may come in a zip
folder instead, those aren't hard to deal with either though, however I
won't clutter this message up with an explanation of that as well when
your

just trying to get used to downloading and installing straight off, should
you come across a game which is a zip, let us know and myself, or someone
else can explain how to deal with this (which isn't really a harder
process,

just a different one).

Hope you enjoy christmas woopass, and any other games you fancy trying.

All the best,

Dark.

Hi Paulette

No you don't have to exit Window-Eyes, when playing a game, but I
suggest you create a set file for the game that silences speech while
you are in the game. Otherwise Window-Eyes will usually speak things
like space, space, space, etc while playing which can get quite annoying.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] swamp problem

2012-04-26 Thread Richard Sherman
HI,

tuesday, April 24th, Aprone posted the following on audiogames.net:

The good news is that I've gotten a lot of stuff ready for the next update,
but the bad news is that I'm quickly running out of stuff I can do without
shutting down the server. I like to keep server shut downs to a minimum so
I try to do all I can before finally closing it down.

On Thursday I should get the new server I ordered for Swamp. I spent nearly
a week planning out how to safely divide the server software between
multiple slower computers so that I could finally get it off of my laptop.
I had been nervous about making the changes though since it is very
complicated and there are about a hundred ways I could screw up and break
things. Hatred tracked down a good deal on a server for me that will be
able to run everything.

While I wasn't too happy to fork over money, I will be very happy to get the
server off of my laptop and also avoid trying to split it across multiple
computers.

Wednesday, he got the new server.

He also said that he hopes to import all accounts as they currently are. So
when the new system is up, it should be as you were.

In the meantime, try to connect. If you cannot, the system is down. Anytime
you connect and you don't have any stats, and you press the esc key only to
hear connection interrupted, the system is down. come back later.

2012-04-26 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,

Actually, Jaws doesn't have to be completely unloaded. All someone has
to do is put Jaws in sleep mode, or create a configuration file that
automatically putsJaws to sleep when the game is loaded. Although, games
will run better if Jaws is unloaded.

As for Window-Eyes the best way to use Window-Eyes with games is to save
a set file with voice set to off. That way when the game is loaded
Window-Eyes doesn't go nuts announcing every key press in the game. Of
course disabling key echo would work as well.

Cheers!
