Agreed tom, though judging from what is happening with current publications 
I don't think it's the case that people are forgetting about actual paper 
books.


it's actually slightly annoying from an access perspective, sinse currently 
all of the lone wolf books with extra content are being republished, as are 
the original fighting fantasy series, however the companies involved aren't 
making electronic (or accessible), versions available, and those are really 
the land mark series.


On the Iphone however, a lot of newer gamebook authors are starting up 
series as applications, not associated with the originals. Hopefully in the 
future this might lead flying buffalow or mongoose publishing to the idea of 
electronic versions of the classic books, but possibly not (not with the way 
the current publishing industry is desperate to keep publishing off the 
internet).


Either way though, it's extremely good gamebooks are coming back in, and I 
fully intend to explore options when i get an Iphone.


In the mean time of course, there are still the extremely good stuff on the 
net such as chronicles of arborell, the ff project and project aon.

To be honest I'm not too surprised about that. Paper and pen gamebooks 
were fun back in the day when they were popular, and I think this 
generation has forgotten that low tech games like gamebooks can be just as 
entertaining as the flashiest video game on the market. I['m rediscovering 
that fact myself.


Although, its not technically a gamebook per say I do remember spending 
hours of time reading and rereading the Choose your Own Adventure books 
that were popular in the 80's. Like a gamebook it took several times 
through the book before I discovered all the possible endings, and all the 
variations on the same story. I spent many hours in my bedroom with the 
lamp switched on reading through those books. I think I had at least 
twenty of those books on my bookcase. :D


Gamebooks were just as fun, if not more so, because as you went through 
the story you could roll dice to determine something random in the game, 
and then write down your progress on a sheet of paper much like a person 
does in a table top roll playing game. Sure, it is very low tech, but they 
were quite fun and didn'trequire an expensive computer or special console 
to play. You and a friend could sit at the kitchen table playing those 
gamebooks all day long taking turns reading the story and rolling stats 
etc.


Lately I've been getting back into interactive fiction as well as 
gamebooks in part because they are some of the games that are playable on 
Linux, but I've rediscovered how fun and entertaining they are. I can sit 
at my laptop on a quiet evening, fire up my web browser, read the gamebook 
with my screen reader, take notes in my favorite text editer, and roll 
dice with a simple dice rolling program. More importantly than the 
simplicity of such games is that I feel connected to the story and game 
world. Everything is describede in some detail from the large wooden door 
at the end of the hall with a brass plate on it to the burning candle or 
torch in the holder on the wall.  Its the closest we'll ever get to 
videogame graphics, and since we can't see pictures having a detailed text 
description at least gives us the sensation of sight, touch, and smell.


I think any sighted user would enjoy it to, because they can imagine in 
their head what this or that might look like. Instead of looking at a 
graphic of the thing it forces or allows them to use their mind to fill in 
the image. ALayering extra sensations like touch and smell helps complete 
the picture and makes the game more lifelike. Plus if they are a big 
reader like me having a good story and being able to interact with its 
outcome is a big bonus.

On the plus side, there are various companies writing gamebook aps for 
the Iphone. One of these, starbreed I know to have access problems 
annoyingly, but there are several others, see the links on 
www.arborell.com for details, which is one reason why I'm myself very 
keen to try an iphone, sinse I'm a huge fan of that style of game, and 
intend to do more serious writing of them myself as and when my phd is 
finished.

the game is still being hosted I believe by tom ward. Go and check out the 
database entry for it on www.audiogames.nett and you'll find it there, along 
with a download link.


It's actually an extremely well put together game, in the way the ball 
bounces and things are tracked, i think Philip worked the rules and physics 
out to make it surprisingly challenging, simple though it is.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused.  Is it my sentence structure that is wrong, or the 
amount of fuel that I finished with?

If it is the amount that I finished with, that is because I pitted later on the 
second run.  The first run I pitted on lap 25.  I meant to do that on the 
second run, but crashed just as I was getting ready to pit, so didn't pit until 
a few laps later.

[Audyssey] Accessible Mud Client for Mac

Hi All,
I don't know how many mac users their might be on this list, but I thought I'd 
pass along information about an accessible mud client I found recently. It's on 
the Mac App Store and is called Mudder.
THere are some quirks with this program, but it's a great first effort, and 
does what you'd expect. You can set it to speak text automatically using the 
system voice, which it does reliably, and it's fully accessible with VoiceOver. 
I get the impression it's frequently updated, and new features will be 
forthcoming.
The program currently costs $4.99. I can say that I'd love to have one less 
reason to boot into my Windows virtual machine, and so I thought I'd pass this 
along in case anyone else is in the same boat.

Hey, I was wondering what everyone think about DCD for Windows?
Myself I like the way that Richard change the pitch in my voice, and I 
also like the other sounds he added to the game!
If anyone else is looking for any voice acting I would be happy to do 
some more recordings!

Sorry, I guess I should have looked at the site before speaking. Yes, 
you are right its not possible to get Fartman from BPC Programs, and 
unfortunately I don't know where else to get it. I checked my backups 
and that's one I don't have a copy of any more because I just assumed

BPC was going to keep it available from their own site.

[Audyssey] Swanp version 2.4

Ok I've patched Swamp to version 2.4 which has a few updates that I had been 
working on, but mostly this was done to enhance security.  There were some 
people trying to cheat in very small increments to avoid detection, so part of 
what I've done is monitor those more closely.  For a little while I've been 
aware of people passing around some small programs on mailing lists that help 
you in Swamp.  These do a range of things but the most common one is meant to 
automatically heal you if you were injured.  What some people might not realize 
is that these separate programs are in fact cheating.  I actually think that 
most people using these programs did not know how they worked so I'm giving 
these people a chance to stop using them without being banned.  Within the next 
day or two I'll start focusing on tracking anyone still using them, and they'll 
earn themselves permanent bans.  Pass the word around if you know people 
currently using those.  Make sure they
 realize it will end up getting them banned if they don't stop immediately.

At the moment I don't have the patience to upload the entire huge zip for 
version 2.4.  If you already have version 2.3 then just download this very tiny 
patch file and you'll be updated to 2.4.

-

- I've added in a new section of code that should automatically kill off any 
bugged zombies that end up in the Safe zone.  This is a backup plan since I'm 
still working to fix the bugs that cause zombies to get in there in the first 
place.
- I've once again changed code to keep people from using the wrong voices.  A 
typo in this code from the last version kept it from stopping people like it 
was supposed to.
- Added an official chat channel for the Czech language.
- Added an official chat channel for the Danish language.
- Being healed by another player will only speak the message if you were not 
already at 100% health.
- It turns out that after I fixed the pipe opening beacon on map 2, I forgot to 
put it into the 2.3 zip file!  Whoops!  The beacon should be fixed now.
- When playing offline practice mode, you are now able to fire weapons within 
the safe zone.  This was something some people were having problems with and 
wanted changed.
- A few unnecessary testing files have been removed.
- More security has been put in place.
- Some people have been using custom programs to inject their own client 
messages to the server to help them heal quicker, shoot faster, or even spam 
reload sounds.  This is considered hacking and very soon I will begin 
permanently banning these individuals.  If you are one of these people, this is 
your one and only chance to stop.

HI see your point, and its one of those catch 22 situations.

From an access point of view it sucks when a gamebook etc is published 
in print but not in an electronic format forcing us to try and scan it 
so we can have access to it. Obviously, it effects us more than the 
general public as we don't have immediate access to the material. 
However, being formally sighted I see the other side of the argument too.


From a sighted point of view its more portable to just grab a book and 
stuff it in a backpack and go rather than fiddle with downloading it 
onto a laptop, iPhone, iPad, etc although hand-held devices like iPhones 
and iPads can be arguably just as portable. Which brings up the second 
issue.


As someone who use to read print books electronic devices like iPhones, 
iPads, etc are less personal than a book. When reading a good book the 
cover is made too look attractive. There might be some stylish writing 
on the binding and on the front cover, plus a large picture on the 
front, and it personalizes the book. Plus there is the smell of the 
paper, the smell of the ink, etc you miss out on with an electronic 
device. Its difficult to explain to people who read books electronically 
all the time how the sensation of actually holding a physical book is 
for avid book readers, and to be honest if I could still see I'd be more 
likely to buy the hard cover print version than buy an electronic 
version for my iPhone.


That said, there actually is a trend towards electronic publication, and 
it happens a lot more than you think. In fact, it is so common now that 
many of the libraries in the United States are discussing the 
possibility of closing their doors, because people are using public 
libraries less and less and as a result many of them can't get funding 
to stay open. Research libraries are being hit the hardest because 
instead of walking into a research library college students are now 
going online to Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg,and other free websites for 
the same research material.  A lot of new books are now being published 
in e-book formats and can be purchased and downloaded from Amazon, Barns 
and Nobel, and pretty much any online book store. As a result the number 
of hard cover and paperback sales have dramatically declined the last 
five years or so so I'm actually surprised that the gamebooks aren't 
being published electronically as well. Although, perhaps the company 
hopes to keep the print going to stem the tide to electronic only media, 
or feels collectors would prefer actual books over e-books.

it's actually slightly annoying from an access perspective, sinse 
currently all of the lone wolf books with extra content are being 
republished, as are the original fighting fantasy series, however the 
companies involved aren't making electronic (or accessible), versions 
available, and those are really the land mark series.


On the Iphone however, a lot of newer gamebook authors are starting up 
series as applications, not associated with the originals. Hopefully 
in the future this might lead flying buffalow or mongoose publishing 
to the idea of electronic versions of the classic books, but possibly 
not (not with the way the current publishing industry is desperate to 
keep publishing off the internet).


Either way though, it's extremely good gamebooks are coming back in, 
and I fully intend to explore options when i get an Iphone.


In the mean time of course, there are still the extremely good stuff 
on the net such as chronicles of arborell, the ff project and project 
aon.

[Audyssey] swamp: small suppressor on map2

Well john, it is true I got the idea from Zork, even though i'm not a 
massive fan of the Zork series not particularly being into those illogical 
type of puzzles.


i did however think the grue was fantastic!
Apparently in one of the laterZork games you even got to see what one looked 
like, which imho was a great disappointement, sinse part of the point of the 
grue is that it is mysterious and unknown.

I can accept your view about the sentimentality of books, though never 
having read in print myself it's not really something I can mentally get a 
handle on,  nindeed I'd much rather read in audio than braille because 
of the time and convenience factors involved.


The funny thing is however, yesterday was my dad's 65th birthday and what 
did we buy him? a kindle, precisely because! it is convenient to use. my dad 
loves reading, and with modern E inc screens which are not back lit, can be 
read in sunlight and (according to a friend of mine I researched the kindle 
with), actually give a far closer experience to reading print than you'd 
think, from the look of the cover even to the paper look of the pages.


With research, it's actually a huge bennifit to students. When for intance 
for my phd I wished to know the exact British legal specifications for low 
IQ, moderate, severe and profound learning disability, I just used 
wikipedia.


when my brother was studdying law, because very small parts of the law 
change, lawbooks needed to constantly be reprinted every year,  not 
electronically however.


then of course there is the cost factor, though quite typically amazon and 
other book producers aren't exactly passing on those savings to their 
customers as they should do (though hopefully once sights like podiobooks 
and other E publishing becomes more common the larger companies may see 
sense on this matter).


I actually E-mailed publishers of both sets of original gamebooks that are 
being reprinted, and got no answer, but what I suspect is that they are 
going very much for the nostalgia value, hoping to appeal to fans of the 
original fighting fantasy and lone wolf series with print originals, though 
happily a lot of new gamebooks are being published exclusively on the Iphone 
and other mobile platforms, so again this might change in the future.


While I suspect there will always be some sort of desire for paper printed 
books, I do myself look forward to a time when these are reduced to a 
curiosity only, and the vast majority of information is available as 
electronic, accessible, none tree killing form, (though whether the big wigs 
of publishing will let this happen i'm not sure).

Even on the second run I had a couple of crashes, so I can do better.  Heck I 
might even try saving fuel by not driving full speed and try to stretch the 22 
gallons approximately 44 laps to the 50 laps and not even need a pit stop.

The suppressor can be found anywhere on either map 1 or 2. Just the other 
day I found a suppressor after many piles of loot. And yet there have been 
many times I have gone days with looking for one with no luck. It just takes 
time. keep looking and looting.

Well john, it is true I got the idea from Zork, even though i'm not a 
massive fan of the Zork series not particularly being into those illogical 
type of puzzles.

Apparently in one of the laterZork games you even got to see what one

Hey Stephen,

Keep a list and fire that over to Jeremy instead. Less work for you
that way, and probably less work for him in the long run too because
if everyone sent in modified maps it'd be a nightmare to collate them
all into a final version. Make sure you're running Swamp 2.4 before
making that list though so you're not sending in stuff that's already
been tweaked.

To open the trap door you need to get the key from the general store 
and then you can open the dorr.

You will need to go through the door to get some more items.

The bottle of medicine is use for when you get attack by the snake or rat 
or both.

I'm not sure how many times you can use the bottle of medicine.
To open the trap door you need to get the key from the general store and 
then you can open the dorr.

You will need to go through the door to get some more items.
I might write a walkthrough for the game if Richard don't mine.

No when you hear the sound of laughing and the sound of a gun, you type 
in the name of that brother that is pointing a gun at you.
Exsample if it says Clarence is pointing a gun at you, then you will 
need to type shoot Clarence.

[Audyssey] How to get out of the quick sand in DCD?

Hey, I am having some trouble when I get stuck in the quick sand.
I have the rope but I am not sure the command to use it to get out of the sand.
Can someone please tell me how to use the rope?
