[Audyssey] Shades of Doom Beta version 20015

2014-07-11 Thread Phil Vlasak

Shades of Doom Beta version 20015:

From David Greenwood on 7 July:

Hi all,

Fixed many of the problems mentioned such as the toilet that doesn't give up
its ammo, or even give up its blob, the problem with the crate and several
other things. They were all related.

A few people asked to have the monster sounds in the sound help, but this
does not seem to be necessary since all you need to do is press Control-M
when you encounter a monster and its name is given.

From 8 July:
What would people think if instead of having a built-in voice, we use your
choice of MS Sapi or your screen reader. In this way I can be sure of
having a consistent, easily understood voice, since you have selected it
yourself. Also, I can expand Shades of Doom and not worry about matching
voice tamber, pitch, and volume. Voice actors have been suggested, but
sometimes you lose track of them, or they might not be interested in
continuing when you make changes at a later date. There is another reason.
I need the speech to be flexible. For example, to be able to say someone's
name, and to eventually translate all the speech to other languages.
There is another issue. What about keyinterrupt? When Jaws, and maybe
other screen readers are speaking, you press any key and it interrupts the
current speech. You can miss important information that way, and you may
not even know that you do. This does not happen with MS Sapi.

Sod version 2.0.15 is ready for download.
Lots of suggestions were included, and it can be played using the built-in
voice, your screen reader, or MS Sapi.

http://www.GMAGames.com/sod20015.exe

As with all betas, backup any SOD data you do not want to lose. For
example, the folder:

c:\users\your name\documents\Shades of Doom 2.0
should be backed up. This name varies depending on the version of Windows.
Other possibilities could be:

c:\users\your name\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0
or
c:\documents and settings\your name\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0

In the program folder there is a file called English.txt. For those who
might be interested in translating the speech text to another language, you
may be interested in this file. Of course you will need to set Speech in the
options menu to MS Sapi or screen reader to take advantage of any changes.

From Phil:

To turn on your SAPI or Screen Reader voice,
Play the game and after David says hit f1 for help,
do that.
Note the default built in voice will be used until you change it.
After hitting f1 use up arro to get to options
Then right arrow to open them,
then up arrow two times to get to speech setting.
To change it use the space bar
When you have the correct setting hit down arrow to save settings and hit
enter.

If your computer doesn't allow changing files in c:\program files\Shades of
Doom 2.0, the default location,

You need to uninstall the game and install it in a different location,
I would try,
c:\users\YourName\downloads
or c:\users\YourName\games
If the folder doesn't exist, you need to create it.

For those who want to use your SAPI voices in Shades of Doom, you need to
pick the voice, volume and pitch in your Windows control panel.

It is under Text to Speech.
I adjusted my pitch from 50 percent to 75 percent which sounds better in the
game.
In Windows Vista, there is an apply button to hit first before leaving the
TTS feature.

2014-07-11 Thread Scott Chesworth
Just taking a run through the demo. I love being able to play with my
screen reader or Sapi, but the output to native screen readers could
probably use some refinement. At the moment, the speech is very jerky,
presumably because David is sending the exact same instructions to the
various screen reader APIs that he is to trigger the recordings that
make up the built in voice, so you'll get something like 1, hundred
out of NVDA instead of a more natural sounding and productive 100.
Where do I go to file this as a bug report? Does David monitor this
place?

Cheers

Just taking a run through the demo. I love being able to play with my

presumably because David is sending the exact same instructions to the

Shades of Doom Beta version 20015:

Hi all,

Fixed many of the problems mentioned such as the toilet that doesn't

A few people asked to have the monster sounds in the sound help, but
this

From 8 July:
What would people think if instead of having a built-in voice, we use
your

having a consistent, easily understood voice, since you have selected

sometimes you lose track of them, or they might not be interested in

I need the speech to be flexible. For example, to be able to say

There is another issue. What about keyinterrupt? When Jaws, and maybe
other screen readers are speaking, you press any key and it interrupts
the

Re: [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: circus charlie

2014-07-11 Thread Charles Rivard
Firstly, as I have never created a game, I'll say that what is below are
just thoughts. Here goes:

In the first stage Charlie rides on the back of a lion and must jump
through rings of fire. The difficulty here is to center Charlie so he
could jump through the rings without being burned.

As far as accessibility goes providing realistic sounds would be no
problem. The problem would be in trying to come up with a way to make
sure Charlie is centered in the ring and to guide him through the ring
without being burned. It was not easy to do when someone could see it,
and it would be even trickier to do using only audio.

Thought: If Charlie is riding straight toward the ring, I would think that
all you would have to do is to make sure that the sound is centered in your
speakers or headset for enough time to indicate that you are riding in the
right direction. As for when to jump, how about a clicking indicator or a
rise in pitch, and you either count clicks or jump at the highest pitch.
With practice, it may be possible.

In stage 2 Charlie has to walk or run along a tightrope with monkeys
constantly trying to knock him off. The idea here was to jump over the
monkeys or avoid them knocking Charlie off the tightrope.

As far as access goes once again coming up with sounds is no problem.
My biggest concern with access is jumping over the monkeys. When you
jump over the monkeys you had to see where the tightrope was to land
on it else poor Charlie went splat on the ground. So knowing where to
land on the tightrope was crucial to that stage.

Thought: If the tight rope is tight enough, would it stay stable? Jumping
over the monkeys would be a matter of timing. As long as you jump straight
forward, it might not be a problem.

In stage 4 is the rolling balls you mentioned. They are basically huge
rubber balls, like giant beach balls of different colors, that Charlie
has to jump from ball to ball. The trick here is the balls are
constantly rolling, constantly moving, making them hard to land on and
you can't stand on them long before Charlie gets flattened by the ball
he happens to be standing on.

Accessibility wise I have to do some thinking about this one.
Representing the balls themselves in audio is no problem. The problem
is there is no way to accurately represent the various angles as the
ball turns to let you know when to jump and where you landed on the
ball etc. That particular stage relied heavily on hand and eye
coordination, and isn't suitable for an audio representation that I
can see here.

Thought: Sounds like a form of log rolling. Staying on top of a rolling
ball would be timing. Maybe the speed of the roll is controled by Charlie?
Not sure about how to determine the status and direction that other balls
are in relation to the ball that Charlie is currently on, though. Maybe
each ball makes a ticking sound, and you could center that sound in your
sound field for aiming the jump's direction?

Stage five is not as you described it in your message. Charlie is
doing some bareback riding on a horse not a donkey. Charlie jumps from
the back of the horse onto a trampoline, flips over, and then back
onto the horse. Later in that stage Charlie on horseback jumps walls
and other obstructions.

I suppose from an accessibility standpoint this stage could be done in
audio. My concern is trying to identify when Charlie bounces into the
air and how to time his bounce so he will land on the horse correctly.
Again another one of those things that required hand and eye
coordination.

Thought: This might be one of those times when practice makes perfect. He
would hit the trampoline and bounce. To jump forward might be done with a
combination of keystrokes, for instance, the up arrow and the space bar. If
the sound of the horse were directly in front of you, and the space bar were
held for the right length of time, you would land on the horse's back.
Maybe, as an audio cue, the horse could rhythmically neigh?

Something else I've just noticed, key interrupt seems a bit wonky. For
example, if I'm running along and I hit V to check whether I've been

monsters a bit fiddly if I want to check info at the same time as
fighting them on higher difficulties.

Anyone else seeing that?

I need the speech to be flexible. For example, to be able to say
someone's name, and to eventually translate all the speech to other
languages.
There is another issue. What about keyinterrupt? When Jaws, and
maybe other screen readers are speaking, you press any key and it
interrupts the current speech. You can miss important information
that way, and you may not even know that you do. This does not happen
with MS Sapi.
Sod version 2.0.15 is ready for download.
Lots of suggestions were included, and it can be played using the
built-in voice, your screen reader, or MS Sapi.

As with all betas, backup any SOD data you do not want to lose. For
example, the folder:

c:\users\your name\documents\Shades of Doom 2.0 should be backed up.
 This
name varies depending on the version of Windows.
Other possibilities could be:
c:\users\your name\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0 or c:\documents
and settings\your name\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0

In the program folder there is a file called English.txt. For those
who might be interested in translating the speech text to another
language, you may be interested in this file. Of course you will
need to set Speech in the options menu to MS Sapi or screen reader
to take advantage of any changes.
 From Phil:
To turn on your SAPI or Screen Reader voice, Play the game and after
David says hit f1 for help, do that.
Note the default built in voice will be used until you change it.
After hitting f1 use up arro to get to options Then right arrow to
open them, then up arrow two times to get to speech setting.
To change it use the space bar
When you have the correct setting hit down arrow to save settings and
hit enter.
