Hi Michael,

I apologize, but you have lost me. What games specifically are you
asking about as I haven't a clue what you are asking me about?

As far as Entombed goes it is a roguelike roll playing game. That's a
particular style and type of roll playing game for the PC. While there
are several mainstream games most are not accessible for a blind
player.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Rogue games.

2015-04-13 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I was at music school so missed the start of this thread, but I believe
Michael was asking about roguelikes.

For those who don't know, Roguelikes are games based on an old game called
rogue. these games were rpgs with a lot of random generation of monsters,
terrain etc,and usually very harsh mechanics around death. represented the
dungeon as a bunch of ascii characters. So your character would be an at
sign, and the greaterthan was used to represent down stair cases.

I've heard people have played these with a braille display, though even then
you'd need to do a lot of moving around the screen given the average braille
display length is about 40 cells in a streight line, and roguelike displays
can to 120 x 180 in screen display and feature very complex layouts, meaning
lots of reiewing would be neede even then.

All in all until a full screen tactile isplay shows up I'm not sure on
access on these, indeed the only roguelike I've had success playing has been
angband and some of it's many varients, and that because of a combination of
easily visible graphic tyles, a very useful big bright yellow box as in game
curser, and Supernova's good reading of the status display, but manifestly
that would not be accessible to everyone.

On the plus side, there are a couple of very good attempts to port some of
the rogue mechanics into other games. Entombed being the most obvious, but
there is also kerkerkruip (check the audiogames.net db for more info), which
has text and room descriptions like an interactive fiction game and indeed
is written in glulx format, but has tactical turn based combat, a randomly
created dungeon with random treasures, a harsh difficulty and death
mechanics.

Kerkerkruip is actually very awsome and I'd advise everyone to give it a
try.

I've also heard of a couple of others in development, indeed there was the
unfortunately named choose your own dungeon (given that it was an if game
not a cyoa book at all), which was trialed on audiogames.net a while ago,
but entombed and kerkerkruip are the most successfull.

Actually I'm amazed more people haven't attempted to write similar, sinse
more games, especially rpg games with somewhat random content would be
awsome.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Rogue games.

2015-04-12 Thread Travis Siegel
I had no problem playing nethack under dos using artic technologies business
vision as my screen reader. Unfortunately, I've had very little luck playing
these sorts of games under other operating systems, because of the way cursor
positioning is handled. I've been after apple for years to allow same column
up/down when in terminal, instead of forcing the cursor back to the start of
the line each time you go up/down. If this was an option, then nethack could
easily be played under osx, but alass, my pleas have fallen on deaf ears. It
would help considerably with compileing programs too, because generally, the
error is marked with a ^ (carrot) symbol, and it's always put just after (or
under) the error in question, and not having direct up/down capability makes it
difficult to tell exactly where the errors are. Since I used to use a dos
terminal to my linux boxes, I also had no trouble playing nethack under linux,
but since I've switched to osx/linux terminal programs, the aforem
entioned issues crop up, and make it nearly impossible to play them now, so
it's kind of sad really.

Well this might be subjective.

i found myself trying to tangle with ascii and depending on only status

really nice Angband features of the highlighter curser, like the ability to

Check out the variant of Angband called z+angband. The developer began
putting in accessibility fixes which go some way towards making the variant
playable.

As for Entombed being a roguelike, I'd say rather that it is inspired by
them. The UI is quite different and there are fewer features that
differentiate dungeon levels. Not disrespecting Entombed, I'm still happily
playing it quite regularly and hoping for updates.

Nethack, Angbang, and ADOM?
If so you might start by seeing if there is an IPhone port of Nethack
and Angbang available. I know they have various ports for Windows,
Linux, and Mac and its possible the developers have started creating
ports for the IPhone etc.

Cheers!
