Re: [Audyssey] Strategy Game Proposal

2006-05-14 Thread Zachary Kline
I would not aim so high as that, my friend.
The system does, alas, have it's limits.
It's the latest version of the Inform development system for Interactive
fiction, available at:
http://www.inform-fiction.org
I7 is the one your interested in.
As the standard library is coded, the game system is intended for infocom-style
text-adventures, but retooling it might not be too difficult.

Best of luck, and I'll offer any help I can.
Zack.

Granted, possibly not much was spent on these things, but still, at
 least some was.
The reason I mentioned possibly a text-based interface is partly due
to the fact that a recent new interactive fiction game system came
out which has shown itself very useful for randomized play,
including dynamic map creation and monster placement.
 Just a thought.
 Thanks for your feedback,

Hi Thomas,
I also understand your argument, but can't all you developers maybe consider
working on some cool games jointly, example you, Philip and David Greenwood?
Their is also a concept I'd like to mention, which I found in a magazine
dealing with computers and computer games. Their are packages where a person
can design their own game levels, can Shades of Doom, Gma Tank Commander, or
other games incorporate this? What I mean by designing your own levels is,
the person can virtually place passages, rooms, monsters, obstacles, and
things in a level. I know that in Loan Wolf you can also design your own
missions, they should incorporate this into Shades of Doom or Gma Tank
Commander.

HI,
yeah, I've actually thought about this as well. Don't really see a reason
why there isn't more collaborations done, such as Ten Pin Alley. Ask the
developers themselves. :-)

The major problem about implementing this feature into the engine that was
used to write Shades of Doom and GMA TAnk Commander is that David says it's
not possible cause of the way the engine is written, and he probably doesn't
want to overwrite it all. No wonder. :-)
Best wishes,

Re: [Audyssey] Strategy Game Proposal

2006-05-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Ari.
Well, some of us developers have discussed the point of possible joint
colaberations, but there are serious problems in actually being able to
do so. For example, I am primarily now a C#.net developer, but do
remember most of VB6. Given the choice I would not do another VB6 app in
my life. In fact, I am in the process of converting James North's
original Monty engine from VB6 to C#.net so I don't have to deal with
Visual Basic 6.
Some of the other developers only do VB6, C++, or some other language.
Which means to join forces all developers would in theory have to decide
on a common language. That's actually what we are doing over on the
agdev newbies list. I am starting all the guys out on one language so it
may be possible all new devs can share ideas, code, and build ideas and
help off of each other.
The second issue is time. I know Justin from BSC is under a major time
crunch right now so BSC Games is on backlog until further notice. Phil
only uses the GMA Game engine so he doesn't have experience in the
mainstream programming languages. I have no idea what David Greenwood is
up to, but I am sure he is busy with is own life like the rest of us.
Now, as to your point about adding levels to games it can be added to a
game engine, but the GMA Game Engine currently does not have this
feature. I know that I liked the old Jedi Knight engine by Lucas Arts
for the fact you could add missions and levels to the Jedi Knight games
that were not there with the original game. However, that was a feature
of the engine to expand the engine to some degree.
Basically, what would have to happen is someone or several someones
would have to write a scriptable game engine that would allow for all
this, but again it takes lots of time, and hard to get cooperation for
one reason or another to get partnerships.

HI,
I don't know any text strategy games but the only audiogame released so
far
which might be what you're looking for is Galaxy Ranger by Vipgameszone.
http://www.vipgameszone.com Think it costs something between 25 and 30
bucks but am not sure, you can
find that on their site.
It's even a multiplayer game and sort of reminds me of the old and good
Red
Alert or Command and Conquer. Best of all, it has an one week trial
period
without any restrictions so that you can try out even the online game
before
buying!
And although I would welcome a few minor improvements, it's still a cool

game, and especially, as I said before, the only one of this genre
currently
available to our VIP gaming community. :-)
Hope this helps,
Lukas

 Ello,
For a long time now, almost as long as I can remember, I've had a
fascination with the strategy games sighted people are able to play

 enjoy.
I'm talking about games like Warcraft, Starcraft, etc.
What I was thinking about tonight and am proposing might seem to some
a

But essentially I would like to see a text/audio based strategy game
 equivalent.
Not necesarily audio, but whichever mediem works well. Text-based is
fine
 by me if nothing else.
I would like, furthermore, to see this released gratis to the

I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
 Thanks,

As far as why the game should be free, I am merely interested in providing
something for the community.
I see no need, particularly, to charge money for it. Call me crazy, but I like
to think that it's a good idea to make projects that have no monitary goal.

Best,
Zack.
