I will admit that I was rather disappointed that Swamp did not function on my machine. However, that is quite a miniscule issue that myself, being experienced, can handle. Hi Shaun, I don't know what you mean about Vista being able to go classic. Vista was the first version of Windows to not have a classic desktop and start menu option. It was the first version of Windows to use the U.I. that Windows 7 uses. So I don't think you know what you are talking about there. :D Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Windows 8 Metro interface, and gaming.
Hi Shaun. Oh, I can use the ribbons, but I still don't like them very much. Its one of the things that has been pushing me towards open source applications like Libre Office for Linux. Libre Office is quite a bit like Microsoft Office was before Office 2007 when Microsoft decided to remove the menus and replace them with ribbons. Its not that I can't use the ribbons, I certainly can, but I personally see no need to change the user interface when the menus were just fine as is. Of course, this is a fundamental difference between open source and commercial software. Microsoft is a commercial company and they constantly have to keep creating newer and flashier interfaces, come up with new ways of doing things, and to create a new look and feel for their software to make it sell. Open source software is user driven, written by the end users for other end users, and they are less concerned about flashy and more about functionality. That's why updates for something like Libre Office tend to be based on what end users need rather than wasting time on replacing all the menus with ribbons just to get a newer flashier look and feel. Now, if I sound like I'm doing the if its not broke don't fix it line I guess I am. Usually I'm all for progress, all for staying up to date, but usually there is a practical reason for it. In cases like the ribbons and the new Windows 8 start screen I have to ask why such a change was necessary, and how it will improve things for me as an end user. If it doesn't impact me in a positive way then I feel that update is a waste of time and money. Cheers! In this case Shaun is right. Vista does have the capability for a classic xp look. I have mine setup that way just for speed. It was win7 that took that feature away and made some use third party software mimic that shell. If you go to control panel, task bar and start menu. under the start menu tab menu classic view is the first option. I actually was able to use a vista system that I did a maintainance thing with. You could set the vista start menu to use the xp start menu, and the control panel to classic and it worked as expected. True I never did much more than that but if you switched the display theme to classic everything functioned as you would expect in xp. [Audyssey] Windows 8 Metro interface, and gaming.
Hey all, This is geared towards those of you that have installed Windows 8 previews. What do you think of the Metro interface? must we use touch gestures, or can we use a keyboard as a blind person to navigate around the OS? Does this OS work with current versions of screen readers? And most importantly, how would you rate game compatibility? I'd test the OS myself, but unfortunately I don't have a spare machine to do so. Re: [Audyssey] Windows 8 Metro interface, and gaming.
Hi Tom, I do agree about the start screen and partially agree about metro/modern UI as it's now called because microsoft had to change its name, however I do like some of the new windows 8 features. Narrator works very well with Metro apps since it's implying a Mac OS style of navigation, and nvda isn't quite there yet. On a tablet Narrator offers full touchscreen access which is very similar to iOS. As far as the windows store, apps have an accessibility rating that gets displayed if you have a screen reader running. Developers can mark that their apps have been tested again screen readers and it will be indicated. As far as games, the xBox live app is just awesome. You can do things you'd expect with your account like order games to your xBox, or even control it, view your achievments and so on, and you get the same kind of access to Windows games as well, which is really cool. Lastly, if you're one of those people who doesn't like the start screen, you can get classic shell which can restore your usual start menu, and it works great with Screen Readers. Not to mention the other smaller things like UIA being a lot quicker and moer stable and the new voices, if you get passed the annoying start screen Windows 8 is great. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Windows 8 Metro interface, and gaming.
the new interface is just fine, once your used to it. there are no accessibility problems. and yes, there are screen readers working on touch. nvda is now close to being able to bring out touch support, hopefully in the next version. it works very well, and offers quite a lot of accessibility. and in fact, in some ways, is going to offer access to windows such as we have never known. agreed, narator, is stil not up to par with other built in readers that we have seen. but it is a very, very different program then it used to be. far more able to be used then anything windows has had yet. and its command structure and use feels a lot like voiceover. as for gaming, i dout that we would use much in the new interface for gaming, most games would be still standard desktop apps, and will work just as they ever have. how ever, for the few games that would perhaps work on there, i think it could be quite interesting, and very fun to have games in the windows store you can download and use. not to sure how they would work yet, as the games that are there aren't that usable. but it would certainly be very interesting to see just how powerfull the platform could be for basic games. could be very accessible, if done right, i think. dallas On 24/08/2012, Pitermach piterm...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Tom, I do agree about the start screen and partially agree about metro/modern UI as it's now called because microsoft had to change its name, however I do like some of the new windows 8 features. Re: [Audyssey] Windows 8 Metro interface, and gaming.
Hi Pitermach, Hmm...I wasn't aware Classic Shell would work with Windows 8, but that is nice to know. Still, it is not an ideal solution for me because I much prefer the Start Menu that comes with Windows 7 rather than the classic Start Menu that came with Windows 98. Now, if you have a solution that will give me back the Windows 7 Start Menu we might have something to talk about. As far as Windows 8 being great I seriously beg to differ. I've never been a fan of the ribbons to begin with and pretty much everything in Windows 8 uses them now. Unfortunately, there is no way to get back the classic menu bars we've used like forever.Add to it the crappy start screen and I'm decidedly dissatisfied with the new user interface. Obviously, this is just my opinion, but I don't see myself upgrading to Windows 8 for a long time if ever because I flat out don't like it. Although, my opinion might change after I have time to grow use to the new user interface. We will see. Cheers! At 01:40 p.m. 23/08/2012 -0400, you wrote: Hi Yohandy, In my personal opinion the new Metro interface is the worst possible thing Microsoft could have done for Windows accessibility. People complained about the new start menu in Vista and Windows 7, but those changes pale in comparison to the new Metro interface. Instead of a start menu you have this start screen with icons tiled in columns and rows and it is very difficult to locate the icon you want, nor can you just press the first letter of the icon you want to jump directly to. Instead it is simpler just to type the name of the program you want and have Metro bring up a list of icons that matches your search and then you can up and down arrow to the icon you want. Its a pretty serious step backwards in terms of accessibility for blind Windows users in my book. As far as touch gestures verses the keyboard technically we should be able to do both. The problem is that none of the current screen readers track input from a touch screen so it makes it difficult to use touch gestures with Windows 8 presently. We can certainly use the keyboard, but the way some screens are laid out its clear that keyboard input wasn't on Microsoft's mind as they developed the new look and feel because everything is arranged for a touch screen or mouse. As far as screen reader accessibility goes all of the major commercial screen readers are going to require updates to work with Windows 8. I've tried Jaws 13, Window Eyes 7.5, and they do a pretty poor job of working with Windows 8's new look and feel. The only screen reader that seemed to handle it with some grace is NVDA which still could use some work to improve access in some areas, but is functionally usable. As far as games goes its no better or worse than Windows 7. If you have a bunch of games written in VB 6 you'll need to install the missing components manually. If you have a game written in .NET generally anything written using .NET 2.0 or hire should work fine, but of course some games may require you install some extra .NET dependencies like SlimDX, the XNA Framework, and so on. Dos games compiled for a 16-bit OS and processor are a hopeless cause. You'll need a virtual machine or Dos emulator to run those on Windows 8.
I aggree, windows is being standards complient just like ie9 and alter are. That in itself means that we shouldn't have to have inaccessable programs again. I am not happy with the start metro system, but it looks like the way my finances are going that a desktop with maybe 7 or xp and a tablet will end up being what I get to replace my old phone and laptop combo anyway.
Well if we did have the ability to support most or all blind games with say touch I'd like to have a vibrating touchpad. lonewolf, you get hit you know about it. in swamp you get hit or you shoot at a zombie you know about it. This also brings up sertain 3d things we couldn't experience. For example you can switch viewpoints in a lot of mainstreams. So you could be the play pov The enemy pov a bystander pov and so on. you could be in any position and that would really rock. Re: [Audyssey] Windows 8 Metro interface, and gaming.
I have been using ribbons for a while and honestly they are not that bad. Its like a mobile, you have a large string and a lot of dangly bits. These bits can go accross and are grouped. And I think of that a lot more tidier. I don't know exactly where something is but if I know its group its fine enough. Cheers!
