Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict help

2014-04-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,

Well, I personally haven't had any issues understanding GMA's
documentation for their games so perhaps in your case you just need
things explained in more depth or something. Either that or just have
various terminology explained to you in as simple a manner as
possible. I'm not really clear what the issue is, but I can try and
help you out if I can.

For example, a unit is a military term for a group of something. It
might be a group of infantry, it might be a group of tanks, it might
be a combination of those things. In Time of Conflict if you have a
group of infantry called Infantry 1 then that is a single unit of
infantry. If you have a group of tanks called Armor 1 than that is a
single unit of tanks. Does that make sense?

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict help

2014-04-17 Thread john
Ok, here goes. The basic idea of the game is that you have to take over the entire map. You do this by capturing cities, and producing units with which you battle enemy units. A unit can be anything from infantry to tanks to fighters to
battleships. Each different type of unit has its own capabilities, and takes a certain amount of time to build. When the game starts, you'll have one city, and have to decide what you want it to produce. This is rather strategic and will depend on
your personal playing style, but its almost always a good idea to start with infantry, because they're the only unit that can capture other cities. Once you have a unit produced, you can command it in several different ways. Firstly, if you want to
tell the unit exactly where to move, you can use the control key with the numpad keys (numlock must be on). The 5 is the center, with 8 being north, 6 being east, 4 being west and 2 being south. The difference from simply moving around the map
virtually and actually causing a unit to move in a direction is the control key. If you hold down control, the unit that you currently have the cursor on will move in that direction. If you don't, you'll move the cursor to a new square, but won't
actually move any units. Different units can move different numbers of squares per turn. Infantry for example, can only move one square, while fighters can move six. Combat between units occurs when you (or the computer) move a unit into a square
that already contains a unit from the opposite team. Combat basically means that each unit tries to do one hit point of damage to another, until one of them is destroyed. Each time you attempt to damage an opponent, you have a 50% chance of success.
This will continue until one or the other reaches 0 hits left, at which point the victor moves and the loser is gone. There are some ways to modify your percentage chances, and some units can attack from a distance, but we'll avoid those concepts for
now.
If you want to try a really simple game, set up a practice map of all land, and you should be able to produce a bunch of infantry and get the hang of telling them what to do. Its probably worth while to look at the operators portion of the
manual while you play, but if that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try to explain them. The idea of operators is that once you have hundreds or thousands of units across the map in dozens of cities, it gets tedious to specifically control all
of them. Therefor, you can give them commands such as sentry, which makes them basically do nothing unless attacked, roam, which means that they try to uncover uncharted land, or move randomly, which is somewhat self explanatory.
I'd highly recommend that you use the older version of the game until you get well familiarized with the interface. The new (2.0) version is vastly more complicated and you'll want to be solidly capable of playing 1.0 before you try it. If the
setup isn't on the GMA website, let me know, and I'll see if I can get it out of my archives.

I hope this helped a little. If you need more info, contact me off-list
and I'll try to write up something more comprehensive.

Re: [Audyssey] time of conflict help

2014-04-17 Thread dark

Hi Damien.

I will agree writing manuals isn't precisely david greenwood's strong
poitnt, which is a bit problematic given how complex his games usually are.

I played Toc 1.0, 2.0 I'm still trying to work out (I've not got this
business about time intervals yet).

But basically you move around the map with your arrow keys. There are cities
that produce your various troop[s, so in the default world war 2 version
(which was the only option in original toc), you have infantry, armored
units, fighters, various sorts of ships etc.

You conquer a city by moving your infantry troops to it, if it's free you'll
get it automatically, though if it's occupied you'll have to fight off any
enemies around it. You can use the applications key (or f10), to command all
of your units, or do various things, that indeed is your friend much of the
time sinse with it you can do things like see what is the closest unit to a
given square or place or command a unit to go there.

In original time of conflict you were always asked to command each unit in
an order, so your first infantry would be set to command, then your second
and so on, though if you set them to sentry you didn't have to keep
commanding them, and if you set them to roming they'd just wander around
your teretory (this is handy when you want lots of infantry patrolling an
area).

As I said there is a lot in the new time of conflict I've not got to grips
with yet, for example you now have units like engineers who can build other
units, and you can create various installations and bases and such, but
hopefully that should give you a basic idea.

For time of conflict 1.0 David greenwood made some really good audio
tutorials, it'd be nice if he could do that again now that so much more has
been added to the game.

Beware the grue!

Hi Lori,

If you can't find any more unexplored land there are a number of
things you can do. If you are on an island etc you can build
transports to cary your infantry units to other islands and land
troops there. If you still want your units to patrol your home islands
etc you can just set them to random and they move around randomly
looking for enemy units to destroy.

As for fighters they can be a great resource. Especially, in large
numbers. They have the advantage of traveling very far very fast. They
can attack enemy fighters, ships, cities, armoured units, infantry,
etc. The only downside is they are pretty easy to shoot down. However,
used with a carrier as a staging area you can usually use your
fighters to clear an island of several enemies before landing troops
and armour to take the island. I've done this many times and often use
fighters to soften up the enemy's positions before taking enemy cities
etc.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Time of Conflict help

2010-12-30 Thread dark

Hi Lori.

Well the ultimate purpose of time of conflict is to slaughter your enemy and
capture all of their cities, not to disocver all land, thus I usually stick
infantry and fighters on random patrol unless I specifically want them
somewhere.

As haiden said, if there are two islands you may need to travel across the
sea to land troops and attack, which you'll need a troop transport for.

Fighters are useful sinse they have huge range and can storm enemy targits,
whether bombarding cities, taking out enemy infantry or even better in sea
battles (fighters are great against batleships).

Actually, on smaller maps fighters can be great, sinse they won't need to
use an air crarft carrier as a staging area.

Beware the grue!

Hi,
Oh--don't think that you should do that with fighters. They can be a very
valuable resource for weaking enemy units, possibly even destroying them. As
for your infantry not finding anymore uncharted land--if there is any water
you'll need to make a Troop Transport in a coastal city if you haven't
already done so. If you have done that, and they still aren't finding
anything, try sending them ashore in enemy territory.
