I'd also love the ability to grab a coffee at the office, and give one to
nick too, as the other office workers seem to be very mean, and I can't fire
them. :(

I'm also unable to go on any of my attractions for some reason, hitting
enter on any of them does nothing.

I agree, and I think this is definitely a feature that should be added
in a future release.
Given the high incidence of food poisoning, it makes sense that, as
the manager, you'd sample the food to make sure it's up to par. And,
hey, why wouldn't you want to sample the food anyway, after being
cooped up in the office all day?

Re: [Audyssey] A little demo of my Super Nintendo project with Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2

2014-10-01 Thread Willem Venter
Hi Ian.
Well done on finding a very interesting solution to the problem of
reading text out loud from the snes emulator.

Did you wrap the function that renders the text in the emulator
window? I think the technique can also be used for any other
open-source emulator or game which has a function to print text on
screen at location x. Something I think you should add is the ability
for excluding certain regions of the screen, or even prioritizing
reading of others based on some trigger (e.g color or wording).

Good luck with the rest of your project. Please keep us updated.

Re: [Audyssey] question regarding ticon blu

2014-10-01 Thread dark

Hi Ishen.

No, their games don't have demos unfortunately, there is no way to try them
out first, though I'd highly recommend giving them a go.

As to payment, yes, like just about all develpers you can pay in American
dollars.

For your information, several currencies are freely convirtable and can
always be used, American Dollars, Australian and canadian Dollars, Japanese
Yen, British Pounds, Euroes, and several others, and so long as a developer
accepts payment in one of these you can convert to the others.

this is why say a developer like Ticonblu based in italy can still accept
payment in dollars rather than Euroes, but just look them up on the ap store
on mac or Ios, or go to their site if you want the pc versions and you'll
find all the payment details there.

All the best,

Dark.

Thanks for the demo, seems like it's shaping up to be pretty cool!

I'm curious, what's the development process like at the moment? As in,
how much info do you need to have about each game to start getting
stuff decoded into text? Is there a reason you started with these
games as proof of concept aside from liking them?

Cheers

Re: [Audyssey] gaming suggestions please

2014-10-01 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Emily,

Welcome! I’m a longtime list member and it’s always nice to see a new face, so
to speak. If I may begin with a question, do you have an iPhone, or another
Apple device? One of my top recommendations for fantasy and the like is played
on iOS, and so that may or may not be open to you.
It’s hard to make a small list of suggestions. There is quite a bit out there.
I’ll try, though.

1. King of Dragon pass, iOS fantasy strategy game. This one is something of a
hobby horse of mine—I helped make it accessible a few years back and so have
played it quite a bit. Basically it’s a roleplaying and strategy game in which
you lead a clan of people to settle a new land, the titular Dragon Pass. It’s
rather unique, and has a little bit of everything from battles and heroic
quests to dealing with your clan’s internal politics, all spiced by a bunch of
potential random events to make each game replayable. It takes a bit to get
into, but has an excellent instruction manual readable within the game, or
online. One potential issue is the price—it’s $9.99, which is a lot in the app
world. I personally feel it’s worth every penny. KoDP is in the App Store at
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/king-of-dragon-pass/id335545504?mt=8

2. Alter Aeon Mud. This one is more traditional, and potentially cool if you
want lots of sound effects and so on. There is a fan-made client and sound pack
for Windows which turns this otherwise pretty hack and slash mud into an
experience almost like the MMORPGs sighted players play, without the graphics.
It’s a lot of fun, and incredibly popular hereabouts. The gameplay is pretty
much hack and slash as I said, spiced with quests and more traditional mudding
stuff. I’m personally more of a roleplayer than a hack and slash fan, but I
feel obliged to recommend the game to you anyway. The client is found at
http://www.mush-z.com. It’s not the same playing the mud without it, but that’s
at www.dentinmud.org if you feel so inclined.

These are two recommendations to hopefully get you started. Others will
probably chime in with more, and I’m running over the message size limits as it
is. I hope you enjoy, and do keep us posted.

Best,
Zack.

oh wow! so this means old snes games like football and baseball could
become accessible also?

It shows Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2.

[Audyssey] gaming computer for my son

2014-10-01 Thread Josh Kennedy

hi

I have a bit of a situation, but I think I have 1 to 3 years room here
but I figured might as well ask. My 7 and a half year old sighted son is
getting into games. but the games he wants to play he would need a
desktop with 8gigs ram at least 500gig hard drive and a core i7 with
good graphics card at least 1 gb graphics. My issue is since I'm
divorced, on SSI, and only get paid $20 or $30 once in a great while for
fixing a neighbor's computer here and there I wonder how will I ever
afford to buy him such a machine? I mean I could wait till he's 10 years
old or so but I live in a small town and things don't really change
around here. If my marriage would have stayed together I'd have the
money to buy him a powerful computer. Do you think it would be more
economical to wait till he's 9 or 10 and then by stuff from newegg and
help him build the desktop from scratch?

2014-10-01 Thread Erik Heil
Hello, let me try and answer your question. Smiley you want you mentioned
that your son wanted computer. Well, are great. However, a lot more hard
drive space. Minimum. This is because games take up a lot of this face. As
far as purchasing system, if you go on eBay, you can only find 3 good
prices on computers. Much less then you will spend at a typical retail
store or even mail order companies like Dell, HP. Doing that, may be able
to ask you money to build you a computer or substantially cheaper. Or, why
not just a sum of the parts yourself and build one? These are just ways you
can drive down the cost member, this is for just one game. Also, a core i7
is probably a good idea. As far as video card, I would just suggest that
you can probably get as much memory as you can. But, you probably know all
this stuff already. So, if anybody else has comments on this, let us know.
I am an expert These are just ways you can drive down the cost of such a
system.

Hi Emily,

Best,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] gaming computer

2014-10-01 Thread john
At a guess, that machine prebuilt would currently cost you aprox $1000 at the
retail store. I'll try to break down the bits and pieces in more detail:

The hdd really shouldn't cost that much, you can get a cheapo 500gb internal
for 40 bucks practically anywhere. If you can't dig up something cheaper on
amazon (250-320 gb aught to be really, really cheap) I'd be shocked, and if you
use that much storage up I'd be surprised.

I recently got 2gb sticks of ddr2 ram for 30 bucks each, so that may end up
adding up a little, but its still somewhat manageable. I'm not sure about the
pricing of ddr3.

The processor and graphics card will probably be the most expensive portions.
I'd estimate $500-600 for both.

Of course, you could probably get a pre-used machine somewhere, or wait until
those specs drop in price. If you go the pre-used rout, all you'd really need
to do is maybe grab another hdd and the extra ram.

I'm no expert though, so I'd love to hear from anybody with more up-to-date
knowledge.

Luck.

If you get far enough into the game, you can try your hand at some of the
attractions you build, but I won't spoil it for you.

I'd also love the ability to grab a coffee at the office, and give one to
nick too, as the other office workers seem to be very mean, and I can't
fire them. :(

I'm also unable to go on any of my attractions for some reason, hitting

I agree, and I think this is definitely a feature that should be added
in a future release.
Given the high incidence of food poisoning, it makes sense that, as
the manager, you'd sample the food to make sure it's up to par. And,
hey, why wouldn't you want to sample the food anyway, after being
cooped up in the office all day?

Hi Emily,

Welcome! I'm a longtime list member and it's always nice to see a new
face, so to speak. If I may begin with a question, do you have an iPhone,
or another Apple device? One of my top recommendations for fantasy and the
like is played on iOS, and so that may or may not be open to you.
It's hard to make a small list of suggestions. There is quite a bit out
there. I'll try, though.

1. King of Dragon pass, iOS fantasy strategy game. This one is something
of a hobby horse of mine--I helped make it accessible a few years back and
so have played it quite a bit. Basically it's a roleplaying and strategy
game in which you lead a clan of people to settle a new land, the titular
Dragon Pass. It's rather unique, and has a little bit of everything from
battles and heroic quests to dealing with your clan's internal politics,
all spiced by a bunch of potential random events to make each game
replayable. It takes a bit to get into, but has an excellent instruction
manual readable within the game, or online. One potential issue is the
price--it's $9.99, which is a lot in the app world. I personally feel it's
worth every penny. KoDP is in the App Store at
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/king-of-dragon-pass/id335545504?mt=8

2. Alter Aeon Mud. This one is more traditional, and potentially cool if
you want lots of sound effects and so on. There is a fan-made client and
sound pack for Windows which turns this otherwise pretty hack and slash
mud into an experience almost like the MMORPGs sighted players play,
without the graphics. It's a lot of fun, and incredibly popular
hereabouts. The gameplay is pretty much hack and slash as I said, spiced
with quests and more traditional mudding stuff. I'm personally more of a
roleplayer than a hack and slash fan, but I feel obliged to recommend the
game to you anyway. The client is found at http://www.mush-z.com. It's not
the same playing the mud without it, but that's at www.dentinmud.org if
you feel so inclined.

These are two recommendations to hopefully get you started. Others will
probably chime in with more, and I'm running over the message size limits
as it is. I hope you enjoy, and do keep us posted.

Best,
Zack.

[Audyssey] assistance with puzzles in the inquisitor 3 audio game

2014-10-01 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi list,
I am steadily working my way through the inquisitor audio game, the
third in the series sisters in dream, I think a lot of the puzzles in
the game are quite silly and not logical so I have used the cheat system
rather a lot.
However I am at a point where I am rather stuck and the cheat system is
of no help.

spoilers below,
s
p
o
i
l
e
r
s
p
a
c
e.
I am at the bit where I am in the place where you have the apple with
the 5 holes, and you can put the seed in 4 of them to move between
several different scenes.

Putting the seed in the first hole does nothing.
I have managed to get the egg from the statue, then I placed it under
the blanket, and it said a strange ball came out of the egg, however I
didn't pick it up and it wasn't on the ground for me to pick up.
I have got several different spheres all with different maps on, and
this is where I am stuck.

I have tried using the spheres with the apple but that doesn't work.
When I use the cheat system my inventory is opened and the apple is
selected but I can't go into the first hole, and I think I have done
everything I need to in the other scenes.
Any help would be appreciated, I don't mind games where puzzles are
logical etc, but the ones in this game are mostly quite stupid in my
view like the one with the waterfall or using the plant to beat the
priest, I mean who would think of using the option take waterfall? for
example,
but anyway any help would be appreciated with what I do with the spheres
and how I get into the first hole on the apple, feel free to be as
spoilerish as you like.
I want to complete the game to see how it ends but I wouldn't say I am
enjoying it because of the crazy puzzles.
I guess the apple and the snake have something to do with the creation
story in the bible, for me the game plot isn't really flowing and hasn't
been particularly well written, I mean going from greek gods to the
christian creation story?

[Audyssey] Gma Tank Commander

2014-10-01 Thread Lori Duncan
Hi everyone. I've recently started playing gtc again, but when I'm in
sector 5 and shooting to kill those soldiers hiding in the woods, I
sometimes hear what sounds like a pinging sound, almost as though my machine
gun bullets are hitting off something. I was wondering if it was the mobile
artillary, but if so, it still doesn't destroy it. I did think about mining
the area before the bridge to try and take him out that way, but then I
remembered my friendly tanks would have to get accross. One thing I do love
doing though is once I'm over the bridge, and have taken out the first wave
of 4 tanks, I go until I hear the cliffs are a head, then turn back around
to face the bridge, and move slowly forward, dropping mines as I go. It
leaves me free to watch the bridge, and listen out for the happy sound of
the tanks being blown up for me.

If gtc is ever updated, I'd like very much to see more cheat codes added,
like endless smoke, and a way to disable the mobile artillary, until you
become used to the sector layout. I also feel ammo dumps should be removed,
as they seem very unrealistic, and it's too easy for them to be destroyed,
especially in sector 5. Perhaps in the standard game, you could be given
more ammo at the start of the game, or at the beginning of every mission. I
like sector 4 for getting ammo from the truck, it seems more true to life
somehow.

I'd be interested to know what other people think about emprovements to gtc?
It's a great game as it is, but I feel it would be fairer to impliment more
features for fairer game play. How about the mobile artillary only showing
up on the higher levels of difficulty, like the It's a good day to die.

Just a few ideas I thought i'd throw out there. :) From Lori.

Hi Charles,

That's only good for naming certain zones though. One can't actually
give their theme park a name. While in theory one could create a zone
that covers their entire park that would not allow for specialty zones

At a guess, that machine prebuilt would currently cost you aprox $1000 at the

I'm no expert though, so I'd love to hear from anybody with more up-to-date
knowledge.

Luck.

Given the high incidence of food poisoning, it makes sense that, as the

satisfaction ratings for the next couple of weeks.

Hi Shaun,

Poor management on your part. By 20 weeks you should be turning some profit
and paying back the lone from the bank.

If employees are striking it means you aren't paying them enough, and be
careful of those park reports. They are only suggestions, and tend to be a
bit low when suggesting proper wages and ticket prices. You need to pay a
little more than what the park reports suggest. that's why they keep
striking on you.

Re: [Audyssey] gaming computer

2014-10-01 Thread john
I've never heard of that group before, but in general yes. The part you're
absolutely going to have to have in it already would be the processor, as
from what I've heard its extremely difficult or impossible to change the
processor of a machine. Its probably pretty easy to upgrade the graphics
card (or just install a new one), and you should be able to handle ram/hdd
equally easily. Again though, the expense will be the graphics card; if you
can get a used box with the hardware you need and just whipe/reinstall the
OS that may be your cheapest bet. Keep in mind taht if you do manage to run
the box out of storage, its really pretty easy to add a new hard disk, as
long as you didn't get a really bad PSU with no extra power cables.

I agree, and I think this is definitely a feature that should be added in

Given the high incidence of food poisoning, it makes sense that, as the

Re: [Audyssey] Gma Tank Commander

2014-10-01 Thread lenron brown
You make this game sound very cool maybe I should take another look.
All these ideas sound like they would be cool. I just couldn't really
figure out how to play the demo. I think I will give it another go.

On 10/1/14, Lori Duncan lori_dunca...@hotmail.com wrote:

:) From Lori.

fantastic work, really really impressed with the game reminds me of
playing the main stream game theme park and I've thoroily enjoyed playing
your game,, but since we're talking about suggestions I wonder about adding
the ability to change a few other factors, such as the quality of food,
so that you can spend less on food to save a quick buck, but at the cost of
unhappy customers. or with the games increase or decrease the probability
of winning which would again be a way of saving cash on prizes by lowering
the chance of winning, but again this would come at the risk of upsetting
customers.

Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?

2014-10-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ishan,

Absolutely not. It is unethical to take someone else's ideas, the name
of a game, etc and try and sell it as your own creation. The fact you
recognize it as steeling should tell you that it is unethical, and
that you don't really have a right to do this legally or ethically.

For one thing there is international and national copyright laws that
protect a developer's right to his or her ideas and creations. If you
create a new game called Super Liam using Liam's sounds, music, game
characters, etc you can legally be sued for copyright infringement.
The only way around this is to get permission from the copyright
holder, and usually that may involve some sort of contract where you
pay him/her a certain amount of money to use their trademarks.

Copyright law not withstanding there is a question of ethics here too.
If a developer be it Liam, Philip, etc creates a game what right do
you have to just take their sounds, music, game ideas, etc and rewrite
it, and sell it as your own work. That's not the same as walking into
a store and steeling something, but it is still theft of someone
else's property. Steeling is still steeling and most people consider
steeling an unethical practice.

well you may, but please avoid branded pcs, dell, hp, etc as they
tend to only allow replacements of sertain bits and are loaded with
extras you don't need.
The advantage or disadvantage is that branded stuff has software
already locked to their serial on their main bords so as long as you
never needed to change the board or change with with a board of
another box like it it would be ok, a customised board well thats how
we went, ofcause its fair to say that we only used drivers and did
not load all the xtra bloat that came with the disk.

The hdd really shouldn't cost that much, you can get a cheapo 500gb
internal for 40 bucks practically anywhere. If you can't dig up
something cheaper on amazon (250-320 gb aught to be really, really
cheap) I'd be shocked, and if you use that much storage up I'd be surprised.

I recently got 2gb sticks of ddr2 ram for 30 bucks each, so that
may end up adding up a little, but its still somewhat manageable.
I'm not sure about the pricing of ddr3.

The processor and graphics card will probably be the most expensive
portions. I'd estimate $500-600 for both.

Of course, you could probably get a pre-used machine somewhere, or
wait until those specs drop in price. If you go the pre-used rout,
all you'd really need to do is maybe grab another hdd and the extra ram.

I'm no expert though, so I'd love to hear from anybody with more
up-to-date knowledge.

Luck.

Wow Really impressive, you mentioned you may be able to add sound to
indicate open areas/spaces, if you could get that and then with the text
output you have, that would be truly amazing. Really liked the sound of
chrono , would like to give that a go although I've never played that one,
all the game sounds brought back nostalgic snes memories of similar games
and made me think of the old final fantasy games.

Good luck with the project, look forward to hearing more on it as you

Subject: [Audyssey] gaming suggestions please

hi everyone,

so i am wondering what games (audio games, muds) etc etc all of you play,
and which ones do you think are worthwhile?

i originally joined this list because i'd heard via email about park boss,
and was curious to join the conversation about it (and possibly play and
make suggestions)

but now i'm wondering what else is out their too, and what i'd enjoy.

right now, i don't really have much of a preffrence as i don't know what's
out their, but:

1. i'd like a game that's varied, so that their's always something new to
do, or explore or acheeve.

2:. i'd like a game that's not too difficult (so i get annoyed at it), but
not too easy it's boring

3. a game with lots of instruction and support (so i can ask questions and
feel i know what i'm doing)

4. i'd like something with a plot (again, not too involved), but still
something that holds my interest

as for theme, well, i'm mainly in to fantasy/ adventure, but i'm open to
anything if it's good quality and it's worth my time

what does everyone play and what would you suggest to me

thanks

Re: [Audyssey] gaming computer for my son

2014-10-01 Thread shaun everiss

Well josh there are a few ways you can go about this.
1. ebay or something like it.
A lot of people testers and the like will be dumping their boxes from
yesteryear for a gamer that will be as soon as they are out of date.
However you may have to replace bits that break my uncle got a high
performance one for 200 bucks but it was loaded with viruses and
failed components.

The basics were there and we got it going, its not the best but it works.
3. off lease business.
A lot of the businesses lease their systems or get leased systems for
a year or 2, they then flog those off when they expire.

You may be able to pick up an i5 duel or something but its all random.
Ofcause you generally get 3 months warenty expandable to 1 year only,
and you will get an old os, right now thats 7 xp or vista with an
upgrade to 8 maybe.

They generally have smaller hard drives and stuff and standard hardware.
4, sale, sometimes shops have sales, you may be able to buy one and
customise that.

5 old computer.

or if someone is getting rid of their clapped out box you could have it.
Most of the time the box no longer meets their needs or has a broken part.
In the previous box that was the file server, the fan was broke and
its tv and video cards but everything else worked.

Before that, they just didn't meet our needs anymore.
Another one we had had a busted fan, lots and lots of malware and a
busted power module.

and a dead ram slot that was the clincher.
that and we had replaced the fan 3 times or so.
It may cost more than you think, however if you can spair 200-500
bucks you can get an offlease.

I doubt for what you want you can just pick up a gaming box.
an i7 or i5 quad is your best bet, a 120gb solid state and a 1 tb
hard drive combo, a dvd drive, 8gb ram, and I guess windows 8.1 64
bit is the base not to mention games, and stuff.
My advise is if you just want games get a console, now the x box 1
is out the 360s or older playstations are cheaper.

2. building one.
my brother and I plan to build
At 02:30 a.m. 2/10/2014, you wrote:

hi

I have a bit of a situation, but I think I have 1 to 3 years room
here but I figured might as well ask. My 7 and a half year old
sighted son is getting into games. but the games he wants to play he
would need a desktop with 8gigs ram at least 500gig hard drive and a
core i7 with good graphics card at least 1 gb graphics. My issue is
since I'm divorced, on SSI, and only get paid $20 or $30 once in a
great while for fixing a neighbor's computer here and there I wonder
how will I ever afford to buy him such a machine? I mean I could
wait till he's 10 years old or so but I live in a small town and
things don't really change around here. If my marriage would have
stayed together I'd have the money to buy him a powerful computer.
Do you think it would be more economical to wait till he's 9 or 10
and then by stuff from newegg and help him build the desktop from scratch?

Re: [Audyssey] park boss

2014-10-01 Thread Desiree Oudinot
I'm of two minds about this.
On the one hand, I agree with you, from the perspective of just being
curious as to what the rides are like. However, I also see that it
would be a pain for the developer to go back and make recordings of
himself or someone else being on those rides, especially if he expands
the game to include more.
However, I absolutely agree that sampling the food, using the toilets,
and playing all the games should be available to try. The games,
especially, because I have no clue what half of them ar, and would
like to be able to play them to find out.
On another note, though, I'm not sure that a park manager would really

 4. i'd like something with a plot (again, not too involved), but still
 something that holds my interest

as for theme, well, i'm mainly in to fantasy/ adventure, but i'm open to
anything if it's good quality and it's worth my time

what does everyone play and what would you suggest to me

 thanks

Re: [Audyssey] A little demo of my Super Nintendo project with Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2

2014-10-01 Thread Ian Reed

Hi Josh,

So far I have only been looking at RPGs for the Super Nintendo.
As you get into more action oriented games I expect it would be
difficult to decode the screen information and represent the information
through audio at a fast enough speed to make certain games playable.

For example I have considered Donkey Kong Country which is a 2D platformer.
Simple levels might be made accessible through the same audio tricks
that games like BK3 use.
But many levels require fast response times and have so much going on in
the screen at once that it's a challenge to represent everything to a
player at all, let alone at a fast speed.

Sorry for the disappointing answer.

Re: [Audyssey] A little demo of my Super Nintendo project with Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2

2014-10-01 Thread Ian Reed

Hi Scott,

Please see the email I sent to Willem for some of the details about the
development process.
In addition to that I'd add that a large portion of the code I use can
be re-used across other Super Nintendo games.
For example there is a fair amount of code for ripping tiles and sprites
out of VRam.
The code to rip custom rendered text is largely the same between Chrono
Trigger and Lufia 2, though there are a few tweaks that had to be made.
And the grunt work code for reading identification information from
files and matching identified tiles with those currently on screen would
all be the same across games.

So, a lot of code is reusable.

Regarding the things that change between games:
Each game needs it's tiles and sprites to be identified.
At this point I do not identify most tiles, just the text ones, but the
rest will need to be identified for navigational aids.

Each game also needs it's custom rendered text ripping adjusted.
And needs custom scripting for announcing only relevant information when
in menus.

So, in summary, it is still a lot of work for each game, but I've been
doing my best to generalize where possible so it is mostly about a
sighted person identifying tiles and sprites.

But some amount of custom code will always be needed.

I chose these games for 2 main reasons.
1. I enjoyed them in my youth and they have a lot of nostalgic value.
2. They are RPGs and either turn based or close to it, which gives a
player more time to attain information in audio.

I also looked at Final Fantasy 6 and 4, but am unsure of how they render
dialog text.
Final Fantasy 6 also uses BG Mode 7 when riding a chocobo or the airship
to give you a 3D first person perspective.
BG mode 7 is a form of direct drawing to the screen coupled with some
matrix transformations to get the 3D-ish perspective.
That makes it more difficult, though I think not impossible, to
transform it into navigational audio information.

I expect as the project continues I will work out more bugs and it will
become easier to figure out these other RPGs.

This project is very much new territory and it's uncertain how many
games can be made accessible.

But if one never tries, then it is certain.

Out of curiosity, are you a developer?

Re: [Audyssey] A little demo of my Super Nintendo project with Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2

2014-10-01 Thread Ian Reed

Hi Willem,

Nope, I did not wrap the function that renders the text, but that's a
good guess.
The Super Nintendo actually has no concept of text and games work pretty
close to the hardware.
It does have a concept of tiles and many games use a 1 character per
tile system for rendering text.
In those cases the character tiles just need to be identified once so my
tool can recognize them in the future.

Chrono Trigger uses this method for the party menus.

The other way games render text is by taking a block of tiles and custom
rendering text to them.

This is done by changing bits in video ram between clock cycles.
In Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2 the NPC dialog text is drawn this way.
So I have to identify the block of tiles used to custom draw text, the
order in which those tiles are laid out, and then do a little bit of
work to tear lines apart, and then individual characters apart while
identifying spaces.
Once I have characters split apart, they can be identified, and then my
app can read them for the future.

Regarding other emulators and a function that speaks all text rendered
to the screen:
It's my guess that emulators for systems that do 3D rendering would have
such a function.
So probably Playstation and successors, Dreamcast, XBox and successors,
and probably N64 and successors.

You still run into a problem where reading all text rendered at all
times doesn't make sense.
For instance, in the Chrono Trigger party menus there is a lot of text
rendered in one character per tile form at all times, but it's important
to know where the menu pointer is so you can instead speak only the text
that corresponds to what is currently selected.
I do plan on having a hot key for getting all the text currently visible
in the party menu to be displayed in a textbox in another window.
That would let me continue to be brief with what I'm announcing on the
party menus, but still let you have an option to hear all the text.
It would also be nice if I could make this player configurable via
scripting, so you could add hot keys to announce Chrono's HP, MP, and
other stats displayed when he is selected.
I will probably add these myself until I reach a point where scripting
extensions are possible.

I've also looked at Nintendo, GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, and briefly
Nintendo DS.
These 4 seem to render the game in a similar way to what the Super
Nintendo does.
But the GBA and DS have a higher number of direct drawing modes than the
others, so there's a higher chance that a game on them would be
rendering itself pixel by pixel and it would be more difficult to
identify text.

Or at least have a higher performance cost to doing so.
And direct drawn games also make it more difficult to identify parts of
the background map, which would hinder creating tools for navigation.

So it's unfortunately already more complex than just announcing all text
currently being rendered.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

2014-10-01 Thread Ian Reed

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the enthusiasm! :)

Yeah, once I have the tiles identified, and have worked out player
positioning using sprites a bit better then I should be able to use
audio techniques similar to Paladins of the sky or Shadowline for
presenting the environment.

Chrono Trigger was made by the same company that made the Final Fantasy
games.
My 2 favorite RPGs on the Super Nintendo were Final Fantasy 3/6 and
Chrono Trigger.

My hit list after Chrono Trigger and possibly Lufia 2 are Final Fantasy
6, then 4, then 5.

All that is assuming I can stay motivated on the project, lol.
