You know how exasperated you become when someone interrupts you, while you are trying to prove a point. At committee meetings, these words have been uttered quite often:- But let me finish! Listen more, talk less. You are made to listen. That is why you have been given only one mouth and two ears. If we were meant to talk more and listen less, we would have been given only one ear, right in front, and two mouths on the two sides. How funny we would look! And, mind you, there is no door with which to close the ears: they are always open. Before a word can be spoken, it has to cross two fences - two rows of teeth and two lips. Therefore, think twice before you talk. Never forget that of the unspoken word, you are a master, of the spoken word, you are a slave. Words, once spoken, cannot be got back. A villager came to a town, to visit some of his relatives. In villages, till today, they cleanse their teeth with wooden sticks. When he got up in the morning, the villager asked for one. They told him that in the cities they had only toothpaste tubes. The villager had never handled a toothpaste tube. As he squeezed it, out flowed a foot-long strip of toothpaste. He was taken aback. Is there a way to sending the toothpaste back into the tube? he asked. They said to him:- No way! Once the paste has come out, it cannot be sent in! Likewise, words which have been spoken cannot be sent in. Be a good listener. Therefore, listen not only with the ears, but also with the heart. Better than talking is listening. SOUTHERN NEWS - ANDHRA PRADESH December 10, 2004 Men swap and sell, with wives' due permission Friday December 10 2004 08:25 IST KADAPA: It's a primitive practice that can put any Hollywood (or Bollywood!) film on wife swapping to shame. The men belonging to ``Pinchapuri'' sect of Yerukala community in the district can't make do with just one wife. Bigamy, even polygamy, is common in this sect. And if you thought that's the end of the story, well, the plot has only begun. For this Pinchapuri man, having a bevy of wives (sometimes up to five) strutting around him can get boring over time. Once he thinks he's had enough of his wife, he sells her. However, if the woman does not like the buyer, she can say no and the deal is off. So much for Women's Lib! As is the case with any other `product', the tariff differs here too. The more beautiful and youthful the woman, the higher the price. So, a not-so-good-looking woman, warts and all, easily loses her soon-to-be-ex-husband to a `superior' rival. Wonder if it's wife-swapping or wife-shopping? A mingled sense of confusion and utter disgust hits when Subbaiah says: ``I sold my first wife for Rs.18, 000 only because she wasn't that good-looking. But, I shelled out Rs.58, 000 to buy my two other wives.'' Done deal? Not yet. He's now planning to sell one of the two, and buy another. Like him, almost all Pinchapuri men indulge in this orgy. The women don't mind being herded along either. After all, that's the only life they know. But the way the sect rationalises this trade sends the intrigue-o-meter spinning. Wife shopping is neither a crime nor a taboo for the 5,000-odd community people. In fact, it's their way of preventing extra-marital affairs. Does that mean, the men of Sabari Colony near Jammalamadugu who have at least five wives, are that much more honest? ``If a man likes someone else's wife, and she reciprocates, we allow them to become husband and wife after the deal is through. This eliminates extra-marital affairs. The selling occurs in the presence of mediators and the caste headman only after the woman gives her consent. If she says no, the deal is off,'' Subbaiah explains. The sect has thought about posterity too. The children live with their mother and the stepfather, but the biological father is their rightful `owner'. In reality, however, once a man sells his wife, he doesn't give two hoots for his children. Never a burden on their parents, these children take to begging, sometimes at 5-6 years, to feed their elders. The teenagers rear pigs or help their parents make broomsticks, the age-old profession of the sect. They travel to Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore to sell the artistic goods and earn a handsome income. The community is spread over Jammalamadugu, Mydukur, Badvel and Porumamilla in the district. While the women and children work hard, the men splurge on wife shopping or alcohol. This goes on despite the fact that they live in small huts, lack proper clothing and even food. How do these `replaceable commodities' feel? ``We have a say. The deal is through only when we give our consent. There is no coercion,'' Laxmamma, who was bought by Sreeramulu, tells this websites newspaper. For the record: Sreeramulu has three wives. And by doing so, he not only thumbed his nose at conservative Kerala but also prevented his wife from adding to the lesbian suicide statistics in the state. Venu ended up with two wives, who had been involved in a relationship with each other. The father of two, who had been married to 26-year-old Mangala for about 10 years now, had to tie the knot with a 23-year-old woman, Ramlath, in the Guruvayoor temple last week. Mangala, allegedly involved in a relationship with Ramlath for about 10 years, threatened to commit suicide if she could not have the latter, who was unmarried, to live with them in their house, sources said. Mangala and Ramlath work for a local financier, and according to police, the latter was a regular visitor at Mangala's home for many years. ''Mangala wanted to keep both Venu and Ramlath, and Venu agreed to bring Ramlath in as a wife,'' the police said. Soon after the marriage, Ramlath's family lodged a complaint saying she was missing. Venu later left Aroor with his wives and children for an unknown place. With its strait-jacketed conservatism, records say at least 21 lesbians had killed themselves in the state during the six years from 1995 to 2001, unable to cope with the social stigma. Recently, two ''self-confessed lesbians'', Unnimaya (23) and Sheela (21), ran away from their village near Thiruvananthapuram to Wayanad, where they took up odd jobs for a living. They lived there under changed identities till a local magazine wrote about them and blew their cover. Gay leaders signal split over strategy Tom Musbach, PlanetOut Network published Friday, December 10, 2004 In a letter to Congress on Thursday, several prominent LGBT leaders distanced themselves from the nation's largest gay rights group because it reportedly plans to shift its strategy to include political bargaining and easing up on the push for equal marriage rights. The catalyst for the apparent public split was a New York Times article, published Thursday, that described how Human Rights Campaign (HRC) leaders plan to moderate their goals in response to the widespread victory last month of anti-gay initiatives in 11 states to restrict marriage rights. One of the HRC proposals, according to the Times, was to consider supporting President Bush's plan to partly privatize Social Security in exchange for a guarantee that gay partners would receive benefits under the program. In addition, the Times piece suggested that HRC leaders plan to adopt a more controlled strategy that places less emphasis on legalizing same-sex marriage and more on changing minds through personal relationships. The reported shifts got a quick reaction from some LGBT leaders, who wrote to the people HRC spends most of its time lobbying: U.S. representatives and senators. Although the struggle for freedom can be difficult and painful for those without full equality, it would be an historic mistake to grow tired of the battle or surrender basic rights and equality in order to make the road easier, the group of more than 30 leaders wrote in the letter, titled Where We Stand. We will not sacrifice our rights -- or the rights of others, like senior citizens -- on the altar of political expediency, they said, referring to the reported Social Security deal. The signers include Democratic strategist and fund-raiser David Mixner, philanthropist David Bohnett and leaders of several national LGBT organizations, including the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), the National Black Justice Coalition, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), DignityUSA and Seniors in a Gay Environment (SAGE). The HRC, however, has publicly disputed Thursday's article in the Times, calling it inaccurate and incomplete in its depiction of the agency's plans. There will be no retreat or compromise in the pursuit of full equality for LGBT Americans, including our right to marry, protect our families and be free from discrimination at work, the group said in a prepared statement. The group also said it has not taken a position on the issue of privatizing Social Security. Kate Kendell, executive director of the San Francisco-based NCLR, said she signed the letter in part to counter what she felt were false perceptions stemming from the Nov. 2 general election. In light of continued questions about whether 'the movement' is moving too quickly, she added, I felt we needed to communicate directly with policymakers as they considered the lives of gay people in legislation. Kendell said her decision to sign was completely separate from the Times report, which she doubted was entirely accurate. Author Betty Berzon, a psychotherapist and columnist for PlanetOut, said she signed the letter to Congress to prevent a narrowing of the LGBT community's focus. Of course gay rights strategy should be reassessed now -- that is healthy -- but it doesn't have to be either-or: working for same-sex marriage or focusing on just helping the American family know us better, she told the PlanetOut Network. They are essentially interrelated, and both continue to deserve our best efforts. The public disagreement among leaders follows the sudden announcement last week that HRC's former leader, Cheryl Jacques, was departing after less than a year on the job. A great soul is no more in our midst, but the essence of MS lives in us forever. MS as a person, as a singer, as a personality... in all her facets never ceased to touch lives and hearts. She was an inspiration (I am from Chennai, and love, sing carnatic music). She was also a family friend, practically family... Her music was pure, needed no language to appreciate, needed no knowledge to appreciate. It was soulful and straight from the heart to the heart. A legend who made everyone realize the beauty of music lies in emotion. A fact that many may not know is that she and her husband had donated most of their property (running to the tune of crores) to charity. She also did tremendous service by singing an astounding number of charity concerts. God bless her soul. I was over at her funeral today... Newlyweds seeking to renounce the vows they so recently took have been trickling into probate courts across the state, filling out obsolete forms that still read ''husband'' and ''wife.'' Josh Friedes, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Freedom to Marry Coalition, said the rapid divorces are no cause for concern. ''It would be wonderful if every marriage lasted until a couple lived to a ripe old age, but unfortunately we know from our heterosexual peers that all too often there are irreconcilable differences, and for these couples, divorce is often the most humane option,'' Friedes said. Exactly how many same-sex couples seek divorces is not clear. Cats center of custody battle The first gay divorce case in Suffolk County, which includes Boston, was filed Wednesday by a male couple who exchanged vows May 22, five days after same-sex marriage was legalized. One partner was a 33-year-old religious educator from Boston, the other a 39-year-old professor based in Washington. The hardest part of the settlement seemed to be custody of their three cats, who will live exclusively with the professor. Opponents of gay marriage said the divorces, occurring so soon, confirm gay couples are not equipped for marriage. ''We're not surprised,'' said Kris Mineau of the Massachusetts Family Institute. ''Particularly among male homosexuals, the promiscuity is just phenomenal.'' With the U.S. divorce rate hovering near 50 percent, gay rights advocates dismissed such arguments. The man says, Well put "You are not getting older", at the top and "You are getting better" at the bottom. MS Subbulaxmi was my favourite singer too. She was very versatile and she sang some bengali Rabindra snageet too. What makes me sad that such a singer who has gone to yester years, didnt even find a full coverage in the newspapers. There was just a small article on her. I wait for the time when we will learn to respect and love our heritage and feel proud of what we are and not because it is recognised by the western society. The actors who played the gay couple won for best actor and best supporting actor in the movie Arisan!, a satirical comedy mocking the life of the small super-rich set in the nation's capital and tackling the taboo subject of homosexuality. Scenes that helped win the movie recognition included an aerial shot of oral sex in a public toilet and the gay couple kissing. The festival's revival after a hiatus of more than a decade comes as local film production is picking up after faltering in the early 1990s due to the stranglehold of Hollywood movies in local theaters.
