I sent you a message offline about how to do it using a text editor.

But, I forgot some things

If you use Linux or Mac, you can type "file filenamehere" and it will
tell you a bunch of information about the file (including the type).

imagemagick comes with identify, which is a great tool, particularily
for image files.

In addition to the other suggestions, if you're on Windows you can open
the file with IrfanView. If the file type doesn't match the extension,
it will give a warning and optionally change the file extension.

I would use the file command on Windows as well.

Imagemagick has a commandline tool called "identify". The output of this
also contains the file format.

I hope this helps,

If you use Windows and have GIMP associated with the file, you can
right click, go to properties, then advanced and it will tell you much
the same stuff as the "file" command under Linux and Mac

[Gimp-user] Non-background layers with no alpha

2006-04-20 Thread saulgoode
The 'duplicate layer' function in the GAP's Frames Modify dialog permits you to
create a layer that does not have an alpha channel. This doesn't really create
any problems, but I recall seeing in Bugzilla that this should not be possible
(this was just a side comment to another issue and I was unable to locate the
report). Also, I am unaware of any other way to create such an non-background
alpha-less layer and wonder if this behavior should be changed to match the
GIMP's Duplicate Layer functionality.

You can do a pan using the GAP (Gimp Animation Plugin). It will make
avis, gifs and mpegs if you have the right libs and stuff installed. For
