One other note of caution about Gimp: I would not try to install it if
you're running Win XP. The online info indicates that it will run on
Win XP, but it also may screw up other programs. I downloaded it and
then discovered that you had to install the GTK+ Runtime Environment.
Did that, tried it and, after quickly determining that it was an awkward
program and not one that I would choose to use for anything, discovered
that GTK had messed up other programs. Took me a couple of hours to get
everything back to normal (had to manually find the bits and pieces of
GTK and reinstall a couple of other programs).

Maybe it works OK with Linux, for which it was designed, but I would not
recommend installing it on Win XP.

GTK+ is only a bunch of files that go to a directory which you could
or could not include in your PATH. AFAIK it doesn't do a shit to
system registry. So I bet that it's not true that GTK+ screw anything.

Gimp and other GTK+ apps (Gaim, Gajim, etc.) run nicely enough on
Windows.

Cordially, Ismael

Re: [Gimp-user] FYI Users problem with Gimp on XWindows.

2006-09-07 Thread Alan Horkan

XWindows is something entirely different from Windows XP.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Window_System

It is an error which makes it much more difficult to take the rest of the
message seriously.

However it has long been clear that it causes problems for many users to
have seperate downloads for GIMP and GTK when nearly all other programs
provide one single installer with all the necessary components. It
might be a good idea for the downloads page to prominently recommend the
all in one bundle provided by PortableApps.com

Sincerely

[Gimp-user] GTK ADI Library

2006-09-07 Thread Richard Hirner
Hello,

I just searched the mailing lists and did not find a discussion about
the GIMP MDI problem and GTK ADI. This is a library which provides
MDI facilities using GTK. You can find details on
http://gtkadi.sourceforge.net/ - the screenshots look just great

Wouldn't it be a good idea to use this in GIMP? I know that this would
be a huge change and wouldn't be done in one day, but just basically,
what do you think? What were the disadvantages?

I saw Create an SDI manager widget as an idea for Google Summer of
Code. Wouldn't ADI be just the right thing for that?

Can this be done with the Gimp?

It can be done if you install GAP, the GIMP Animation Package.

I don't think it would be. But we are already improving the way GIMP
manages its windows for 2.4. And for GIMP 2.6, I would like to try
merging the toolbox menu into the image menu and making sure that
there's always one image window open. That window can then become the
main GIMP window, with the toolbox and other dialogs as transient
children. That should solve the problems without introducing the
akwardness of an MDI user interface.

[Gimp-user] gimp print help?

2006-09-07 Thread Helen
In my attempt to set up Gimp so I could print from Gimp, I have messed up my printer and made things worse. Now nothing will print. Printingworked just fine until I tried to improve it.
I'm using SuSE 10 on Linux, Gimp 2.2.10. HP Deskjet printer 5550 I downloaded gutenprint-5.0.0.tar.bz2 from sourceforge. In Yast, I now have 3 PPD files showing for my Deskjet5550.
 They are HPDeskJet5550 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)(manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/HP-Deskjet_5550-hpijs.ppd.gz) 2nd one is HP Deskjet 5550 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended) (HP-Deskjet_5550-hpijs.ppd)
3rd is HP Deskjet 5550 Foomatic/gimp-print (recommended) (HJP/Deskjet_5550-gimp-print.ppd.gz) None will print.Print commands are going to the print queue. When I use command line I get:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Documents lp test.txt request id is deskjet5550-27 (1 file(s)) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Documents I've disconnected my printer and rebooted with no printer attached, thenreinstalled my deskjet and rebooted. Still nothing will print.
I can see that cups is running. I don't know where to go from here. Can anyone help? Helen
