Re: Font question (newbie)

Yes, there are a few ways to create fonts. But first of all you should know what kind of fonts they'll be. AFAIK we don't have any editors for TrueType fonts, only for bdf fonts. I use xmbdfed, and it's pretty much enough for me. If you have installed an x font server that's capable of loading ttf then you can use xmbdfed's "import server font" facility to edit TrueType fonts, but you have to save it as bdf format. If you want, you can then convert it to various formats using tools like bfdtopcf, etc. On the other hand, if you want to edit TrueType fonts directly, you need Windows. There are a plenty of ttf editors for that os, both shareware and public domain. You can find more about xmbdfed at its homepage: http://crl.nmsu.edu/~mleisher/xmbdfed.html Hope this info helps you. -- dirt Charlie Big Potato
Re: Wrath of Precision Brush
Well, it may not exactly suit your needs but in Gimp 1.1.24 (not sure whether it was available earlier) you can choose your pointer as cross-hair. And it can optionally show a small representation of the tool you're actually using. Don't know when we'll have the real precise pointers that also show the brush size. It will be nice to have a guitar, or bird shaped pointer fooling around :) Does photoshop show exact shape of the brush using the pointer? -- dirt Charlie Big Potato
** WARNING **: gimp: wire_read: unexpected EOF
It all started when i upgraded to libpng 1.0.7 from 1.0.6... It was uncompatible with the previous versions so i compiled everything from scratch (imlib, gdk-pixbuf, etc.). Everything works ok to this point. I recompiled png plugin and i started to get this: ** WARNING **: gimp: wire_read: unexpected EOF once when i start the gimp. I decided to recompile whole gimp and i get that error for every single plugin right now. With an exception gdyntext tells me this: /usr/local/lib/gimp/1.1/plug-ins/gdyntext: /lib/libc.so.6: version `U' not found (required by /usr/local/lib/gimp/1.1/plug-ins/gdyntext) And gimp does not work. This is gimp 1.1.24. It was working perfectly until i upgraded libpng. I also upgraded kernel to 2.4.0test2 (i don't think this is anything with the kernel tho i had many many problems because of it). The rest of the system is still the same, nothing changed between this state and the last one (the one that compiled gimp perfectly). Anyone out there using latest kernel and latest libpng and not having any problems with gimp? -- dirt Charlie Big Potato
Re: New tutorial at CubicDesign.com
After reading your mail i've noticed that there's a link to http://www.hotmodels.org on the Cool Links part, it's just under the http://gimp.org link ;) On 16 August 2000 at 16:40, James Smaby wrote: Is it just me, or are these CubicDesign tutorials a little too close to porn howtos? Must the object of the image touchup be a large breasted model? I don't know about most people, but I don't really want people thinking I'm looking at porn when I'm really reading about one of these tutorials. Perhaps somthing a little safer next time, like a bowl of fruit or a house. Am I too nieve to think that half-naked pictures are not the best thing to use as examples? If a person is necessary (like when flesh tones are required as in the latest tutorial), a closeup shot of Clinton or Gates might make a better picture (no, I do not want to see them in a bikini (although that might make for a funny tutorial), I mean a closeup of thier face). According to a slashdot observation, apache is the http server of choice of the porn industry; is the gimp the image editor of choice? -James Smaby -- dirt All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

I think #2 is your "conclusion" to the previous thread :) Personally, i liked the second frame of the #2 the most, as the message "Dig the Gimp" suits so fine with the tutorials. What about making the horizontal lines under the cube clearer? It may look nice. -- dirt All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Re: How do I resize a selection?
On 29 August 2000 at 17:44, Timur Tabi wrote: Sorry if this is explained in the manual somewhere, but I couldn't find it. How do I resize a rectangular selection? Every other graphics app I know lets me resize a selection simply by my moving the mouse over a corner or edge, holding down the mouse button, and moving that corner or edge. But not GIMP. It insists on moving the selection. Can someone help me out? At least you can save the selection to a channel and play with it there, just like manipulating a normal image layer. Standard transformation tool in the toolbox may do the job (scaling down or rotation, etc. will produce some "white" are around the layer, may couse difficulty when getting rid of, if your selection is very complicated). Or, you can create a 100% filled temporary layer, and transform it then delete it. I believe there are many ways, probably better, but i use these methods. I hope this will help. -- dirt All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Re: Problem building 'po' in 1.1.25

Try $ locate msgfmt and if it exists try hand carving it in the Makefile. For example i have it in /usr/bin/msgfmt. Or maybe you can try --disable-nls option when executing the configure script. BTW, as far as i know, msgfmt is distributed with and is a part of GNU gettext utility. I hope this helps. -- dirt All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
