The branch where everything changes every day? The branch that's not
recommended for daily use? Why? :)

Unless you've pulled current code from git and compiled it, there is
no Gimp 2.9. The current release version is 2.8, which recently
replaced 2.6. I would imagine those are the two versions that you're
running side-by-side. Use Help-About to verify.

I pulled current code from git and compiled it. I also compiled babl,
gegl from git. I also downloaded source code and compiled gdk-pixbuf,
glib, and gtk+ as the versions in the OpenSuse 12.1 weren't current
enough.

2.9 About GIMP says 2.9.1 and there is a little yellow hard hat on
the Gimp mascot, he's holding a paintbrush in his mouth. It says goat
invasion when opening 2.9 and the splash screen has an orange
background. Under Image, in addition to mode you now find
precision.

2.8 About says GIMP 2.8.0-RC1. And the mascot isn't wearing a hard
hat. The splash screen is green. Precision isn't an option under
Image.

Ah, well - I was wrong then ;)

I suspect that there will be quite a bit of breakage as work in git
progresses. But if you've found what appear to be a bug (or bugs), it
might be a good idea to post to the gimp-devel mailing list to see if
it's a known issue, or something that should be filed against git
master.

Gimp 2.9 works really well, for the limited things I've tried with it.
Except for that one bug, which involves 16-bit tiffs and probably the
developers already know about it because they specifically said 2.9
doesn't work with 16-bit tiffs. But if they don't know about it, it
would be a shame to not catch it sooner rather than later.

The GEGL based TIFF loader is more like proof of concept. I don't
think Simon finished porting it.

Well, some things are knowingly broken, many things are knowingly
unfinished. It's best to hang around in the IRC channel, if you really
care about 2.9 a lot.

A couple things to mention once you have an IRC program for your computers
(ie. Pidgen which handles multiple IM protocols including IRC), when you go
to a channel, don't ask if anyone is there, or if you can ask a question.
Just ask. Also, be patient and wait more than a few minutes for a reply.
Depending on time of day, answers may take a while to arrive.

 Alexandre,

I must say that Linux has been a learning experience at every turn.
Sometimes I think there is too much to learn. Figuring out how to
compile Gimp from git felt like an accomplishment.  But alas, I don't
know anything at all about IRC. Could you point me in the right
 direction (software, url, instructions, etc)?

CB But it says there is a prolem with the cymk color.

Gimp's psd filter does not seem to handle cmyk psd files.

A quick test confirms that gimp's tiff import filter does.

If you use imagemagick or graphicsmagick to convert the psd to tiff you
will be able to open it in gimp.

If you do not care about preserving the CMYK nature of the file, you
could convert to png instead of tiff, which will force the image to rgb.

I tested with:

:; gm convert foo_cmyk.psd foo_cmyk.tif
:; gimp foo_cmyk.tif

Imagemagick's convert should work just as well.

(I used ghostscript's psdcmyk output device to create the psd which I
used for the test. Ghostscript creates rather simple psd files; files
created by photoshop might not convert as well. YMMV.)
