Hi Judy,

Start by going to Edit->Preferences->Interface and perhaps reset the
shortcuts in case you have done something obscure with them.

Then go back to Edit->Keyboard shortcuts, and then look at the very left of the
dialog and you will see a "+"

Click on that and see what is there.

[Gimp-user] Color mismatch between display and printer

2016-09-25 Thread James Moe
This is a continuation of the topic "Color mismatch when an image is
printed."

opensuse 42.1
linux 4.1.31-30-default x86_64
gimp 2.8.16

Display color profile: Adobe RGB (1998)
I have a Epson PM225 inkjet color printer.

Several months ago the printer output an image whose color was a very
close match to the displayed image. Currently, the printer's output has
a strong green tint, a poor match to the display.
The previous topic had several discussions regarding color profiles. I
have tried a variety of them for the display. None of the profiles has
made the slightest difference in the output.
In GIMP settings for Color Management, (Edit :: Preferences :: Color
Management), I have set the "Printer simulated profile" to US Sheetfed
Uncoated. It has made zero difference to the output.
One of the suggestions was to create a color profile for the printer.
The docs make no mention of how to do this. Epson does not offer a ICC
profile for that printer.

1. How do I create a color profile for a printer?
2. Why has the output image changed color?
3. Why has changing the color profiles made no difference whatsoever?

Probably the easiest thing to do is to go to 'Edit->Keyboard shortcuts' and
write down the ones you think you will mostly use.

You will get familiar with them very quickly

Re: [Gimp-user] Approach to do cmyk conversion (was: gimp-user-list Digest, Vol 60, Issue 29)

2016-09-25 Thread Klaus Gölker
Hello, another suggestion to convert any rgb image to cmyk by open source:
use Krita. Until GIMP is fully capable of doing this, Krita can do right
now: https://krita.org
Anyway, you will encounter color deviations, espacially in the range of blue
and turquise color tones after converting. This is, because rgb and cmyk are
not totally equal - both differ in color tones and color range. I can report
that after conversion from rgb to cmyk, colors, especially blue and reddish
ones, are shiftet in luminosity and look somewhat dull. And bright cobalt
blue tones are shifted towards somewhat turquoise, prussian blue tones.
AFAIK In regular cmyk printing, this is not to be avoided. One reason the
Pantone color tables have been invented for is gaining back those "special"
colors. But this efforts special printing machines, which can print a fifth
or even sixth color.
You may try to correct colors as far as possible after conversion with
Krita, but don´t expect the impossible.

Klaus Goelker

I wasn?t meaning a photograph printing store, I was referring to a printing
shop that prints posters, flyers, books, etc. on paper. Like with a printing
press. However, if what the man wants is photo prints printed by someone
else, then yes, sRGB is most likely what he needs to send.

In any and all cases, ask what they want and send them that. After you have
calibrated your monitor, of course.

Don't send CMYK to a photo print shop unless they specifically ask for it.
The majority of high end US print shops want sRGB for photo prints (not
books or offset printing - in that case I'd let them do the conversion
unless you know what you're doing).

Google SPYDER. It's simple to use, fast and accurate. There are others.

If you are sending files out to a print shop send CMYK images in North
America. The preference in Europe I think is LAB. Check with your printer.
Try the US Sheetfed/un-coated profile at home or anything that matches
your
paper and gets you close to your calibrated monitor image.

I mean can I access the interface and control it through scripts? The idea
of the “script” above is to build a toggle to hide and show the layer
palette by pressing the f7 key.

The script and plug-ins do not control the user interface (and IMHO this
is a good thing). However you can assign a keyboard shortcut to show the
Layers list (Ctrl-L by default) and the Tab key will hide all dialogs.

Another example:

if(keypressed=f3){if(activelayer.layermask.exists){activelayer.layermask.select}else{activelayer.layermask.add}
}

If the f3 key is pressed, if there is a layer mask on the active layer it
should be activated and if not an empty layer mask should be added and
activated.

Is it possible to do things like that with the Gimp 2.8x?

John

You can define a keyboard shortcut to elicit the Layer Mask creation
dialog. If you want a mask with a specific initial value, you have to
write a script (and assign it to a shortcut). You can also define a
shortcut to toggle editing between mask and layer, but that will be a
different key.

As they say, the tough thing with Gimp is not learning Gimp, but
unlearning Photoshop.

[Gimp-user] Controlling the interface through scripts

2016-09-25 Thread John Smith
Hello everybody,

I am considering moving from Photoshop to The Gimp entirely.

I found answers for most of my concerns but there is still one point that
worries me.

Am I able to write scripts doing something like below.

if (keypressed=f7)

if(layerpalette.isVisible){

}

I mean can I access the interface and control it through scripts? The idea

Another example:

should be activated and if not an empty layer mask should be added and

Is it possible to do things like that with the Gimp 2.8x?
