Uploading the image to something like imgur.com would be the first
step for anyone to be able to take a look.

Make sure you download the latest installer from www.gimp.org - the error
you're seeing was present in the original 2.10.8 installer, but was fixed
in one of the updates.

There isn't really much you can do to the picture to make it look better on
the screen. Increasing saturation might help a bit, but the only real way
is to get a better screen for your computer.

GIMP 2.10 will not uninstall GIMP 2.8 - it simply installs over it (and
removes old plugins). It will however uninstall GIMP 2.6 and older first,
because from 2.8 onwards GIMP installs 64-bit version by default when
possible.

Official advice is to just install over the current version and let it
migrate settings.

Operating System??? - guessing a Windows user.

Gimp can only read a jp2 (jpeg2000) file format, Nothing useful to write a jp2

Use some other application as a converter such as XnViewMP

[Gimp-user] problems installing gimp on mac

2019-01-26 Thread GimpMango
Hi guys,

I used to use gimp on my old mac and never had any problems. Now I got a new
macbook and somehow I don't seem to be installing te software properly?

I can download everything, and when apple complains this is software from an
'unidentified developer' I can solve that. But somehow every time I start up
gimp it has to install all over again??

It never showed up as a proper application in my applications folder either, i
just keep the .dmg file and even though I can get it to start, it never becomes
the regular application.

I'm just totally flummoxed on what could be going on and I really hope anyone
over here can tell me!

cheers,
Mango

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.10 embedded color profiles

2019-01-26 Thread docrob
This issue refers to GIMP 2.10.8 and Darktable 2.4.4, running in Linux (KDE).

When using GIMP's Darktable plugin, I think I am right in saying that that
closing Darktable always imports the image into GIMP in the form of a
floating point EXR file with profile linear Rec709 RGB. This is logical
since it is desirable to work with floating point precision in GIMP 2.10.

In most cases the desired final output from GIMP is a JPEG with sRGB profile
but I can find no settings which give me confidence that this is working
properly. In my case my starting point is Nikon NEF files. The Colorspace
information for the image that Darktable exports shows up in Image ->
Metadata -> View Metadata as:
Exif.Nikon3.ColorSpacesRGB
Exif.Photo.ColorSpace Uncalibrated

I have been advised that some images that I sent out as JPEG files did not
contain an embedded profile, although GIMP's Image Properties insist that
they have the GIMP built-in sRGB. To add to the doubt, the Gwenview image
viewer, while it shows the full-sized image correctly, displays the
thumbnails much too dark.

I have found the only way to show the thumbnail correctly in Gwenview is to
reload the JPEG into GIMP, ensuring that the option to promote imported
images to floating point precision is unchecked, specifically assign the
GIMP built-in sRGB profile, then re-export as a JPEG. Curiously, this does
not change either of the two ColorSpace tags above.

This is obviously unsatisfactory in itself, but owing to the
Exif.Photo.ColorSpace tag remaining as Uncalibrated, I cannot be sure the
image has the sRGB profile embedded. By contrast, if I load a JPEG file from
the camera into GIMP, both tags are set to sRGB and there is no problem with
thumbnails.

I would be grateful if someone could confirm whether the above behaviour is
expected and if so, what would be a suitable work-around.

Rob

Clipping Path? A nasty PS thing for jpegs? No good trying to apply PS concepts

Ctrl-Shift-click (Command-Shift maybe for Mac) deletes a control point or a
segment between control points

Control points not in the correct place, add as required with Ctrl-click

Gimp is built around plugins and paths are no exception.

Lots here http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-path-tools/files/scripts/ all
python plug-ins

and about 5 down ofn-path-edits.py Comes with documentation on use, although for
joining control points they have to overlap closely.

I am trying to do a simple clipping math in GIMP, and I need to combine a
circular path with a bump out to show part of the image that extends beyond the

[Gimp-user] How to cut or combine paths in GIMP

Additional to the previous:

To add a mask in Gimp Layer -> Mask -> Add Layer Mask

see: https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-layer-mask-add.html

A few ways but say, using Black (full transparency) then Path-to-selection, fill
the selection with white.

Saving as a Gimp .xcf keeps masks, paths, active selections. For an export, png
keeps transparency, You can try exporting as a psd, but as-far-as-I-know while
you get transparency & a layer mask, that is all. No paths transferred.

[Gimp-user] Wacom intuos in window mode

2019-01-26 Thread szycopath
Hello,

hope you can help me out. I have a wacom intuos ctl-490, and trying to use it
with Gimp 2.10.08 on win10.
Regardless of the settings in the tablet's own options, gimp would only use it
when it's set to window mode (under /settings/input devices). If I put it on
screen mode, it will use the buttons, and can use the pen's tip as a mouse
basically, but it won't draw with pen/brush tool.
My problem is that I got used to using the tablet in screen mode, and am quite
literally unable to handle the window mode. Plus, if in window mode, I have to
always put the cursor back inside the canvas, else it just doesn't work.
I've spent some time with this but can't seem to find a solution.

Is there a way around it?

Thank you

And I just assumed (like an idiot) that this was a usual Windows crash that

the external editor but when I try to send the file to GIMP it will open but I
get the following message:

'Opening '/tmp/20184453_RAF_embedded.tif' failed: Error opening file
/tmp/20184453_RAF_embedded.tif: No such file or directory'

Why can't it see the file but RawTherapee still opens GIMP?

I have tried searching this forum and the net so apologies if I have missed this
elsewhere.

Best wishes

D

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.10 Tool Options

2019-01-26 Thread Carusoswi
So, I click on the quick mask tool (or whatever you call it), and then I open
the Brushes "pane", select a brush, but cannot size it unless I then open the
tool options "pane". That actually worked once. Now I get nothing when I click
Tool Options at the top of the "pane" which offes "Layers Naviation" tag, "Tool
Options" tab, "Gradients" Tab, and "Brushes" tab.

If I click the "Brushes" tab, the familiar "pane" showing various brush options
appears, so I must be on the right track.

I cannot do any selecting with the quick mask until I can at least resize my
brush.

I am certain it is something simple that I am missing.

Please help.

Thanks.

I do not know. I use linux and generally large files edit ok. You could go into
Edit -> Preferences -> System Resources and tinker with the settings. Set
'Number of Threads to Use' to 1 (or some other value) see if it makes a
difference.

Maybe someone will have an answer.

Best guess. Are they transmittals (or maybe archives), typically engineering
drawings 1 bit tiff files?

These are going to be opened in gimp as 8 bit and the file size correspondingly
greater. Example file size 11kb in Gimp as a file in memory 30 MB.

After editing export as a CCITT group 4 and you should get back to a
corresponding small file size

[Gimp-user] Where are GIMP 2.10 Files on Mac?

2019-01-26 Thread Bluize56
I have now downloaded GIMP 2.10 three times. I am using a MacBook Pro, Mid
2012, running Mojave.
The initial download is smooth, no probs. Click the DNG file and you are
brought an Install Drive. Click that and there is a window with the GIMP icon
to drag to Applications folder. The Application is in the folder, all 426 MB of
it. I only discovered this problem after wanting to add new brushes. When I go
to my Library, in the GIMP folder, there is only the old files for 2.8. No
folders anywhere for 2.10! I added my brushes to that folder just to see if
somehow 2.10 was using its contents, but no go.
So where might I access GIMP's folders, if they are not in my Library?

Any clues? Any guesses? Any help would be appreciated. I am enjoying the new
look, and functionality of 2.10, and I really don't want to go back.

Thanks in advance...

[Gimp-user] Is uninstall needed before update

Short answer is no need to uninstall first but

Gimp 2.10 will uninstall Gimp 2.8 as part of the process. If you have installed
any 3rd-party plugins to the Gimp system folder, then not a bad idea to
uninstall Gimp 2.8 first. Some of these 2.8 legacy plugins can cause problems.
Uninstall Gimp 2.8 If any files remain in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\ delete them.

My advice is use the customise option, save a bit of space by un-selecting
languages. Add a short-cut to the desktop, which is useful.

What it does not do is delete the old Gimp 2.8 profile
C:\Users\"yourname"\.gimp-2.8

It will migrate settings and resources from there to the new Gimp 2.10 profile
which is;

C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10 Note: a hidden folder in Windows
10

Again my advice, start with a clean install.

Before anything **rename** the old profile as a backup
C:\Users\"yourname"\.bakup-gimp-2.8

Then, after running Gimp 2.10 for the first time, a new basic Gimp profile is
made. Move any resources, scripts, plug-ins, brushes, fonts over from the
backup, checking as you go that they work.

You are correct about the flatpak. I use 2.10.8 flatpak in a Kubuntu 16.04.
There are ways-and-means of getting many plugins working. Lack of QT support
means no gmic_qt plugin. Too many dependency issues for both gutenprint and
SANE. Apart from that, python plugins and script-fu works ok.

Why use it, still plenty questions around from Gimp 2.8.x users, so I run that
as well.

Up to you but a Kubuntu 18.10 has an end-of-life 2019-07 while Kubuntu 18.04 is
2023-04 All depends how you want to maintain your installation.

The actual tif file size is 642KB. When I open it to edit it, Gimp is stating in

Why does Gimp think it's editing a file this large when it's really not?

Gimp 2.99 this time. Where did you get that version of Gimp? What happened to
Gimp 2.10.8?

plugin-heal-selection.py plugin-heal-transparency.py resynthesizer
resynthesizer-gui from another use? What linux and version of Gimp is other user
using? Are they compatible with 'buntu?

Assuming compatible, are they marked ***executable***. That is the usual reason
for plugins not showing. You can check using the file browser and file
properties

>and copied them into the folder /usr/lib/gimp/2.99/plug-ins/.
>Obviously, this is not quite the way to do it, as Gimp does not

Certainly is not the way to do it.

Where did that folder come from? The Gimp library directory for plugins is
usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins The screenshot is the plugins you installed yesterday
using the gimp-plugin-registry package. Have those gone? I hope they have.

The place to install your plug-ins is in your home partition. The Gimp user
profile, that is what it is there for. For Gimp 2.99 will be the hidden folder
~/.config/GIMP/2.99/plug-ins Please check that you have that folder. You might
have a ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/.. as well, if you previously had 2.10 installed.

Attached the plugins I use (and compiled) in Gimp 2.10 They all have permissions
set, all you have to do is unzip into ~/.config/GIMP/2.99/plug-ins

That didn't work unfortunately, It's even worse than before, at least in the
game. After exporting, the background is visibly a different color and I get
huge black squares in the game instead of the grey ones before.
Is there no way to tell GIMP to ensure the original colormap is saved and

Seems like it's a simple thing for other programs.

Ok, you have installed the development version from otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-edge
I see the /usr/lib/gimp/2.99/plug-ins folder.

Not a good idea. It has dire warnings about use for sensible reasons.

One problem is is that there is no python support. Those heal-selection.py

Go back to the regular Gimp 2.10 and if you want to experiment maybe use an

With this comment: quote "I had to kick out the gimp-plugin-registry for now due

Not only that but bloated and contains filters that have not worked since Gimp
2.6

The best way is download the .deb file, unpack it and copy your required scripts
or plugins to your Gimp profile.

I know from past experience that I am wasting my breath with that advice, so If
you want 160 scripts and 19 plugins cluttering up your Gimp.

Go to some convenient folder and use the following to get the deb (copy - paste
these into the terminal)

wget

Then still in the terminal, to force an install.

sudo dpkg -i --force-all gimp-plugin-registry_7.20170217-0a9~ppa_amd64.deb

see attached screenshot(s)

A quick test and the important ones are working, resynthesizer / heal selection

[Gimp-user] IImprovements to unified transform

2019-01-26 Thread programmer_ceds
>I'm not sure what you mean. The centre of rotation is wherever you
>drag the pivot to. That is a known quantity.

What I meant was that if the centre of rotation is not within the view that is
being manipulated then the direction of rotation may not be readily apparent.
For instance dragging the mouse pointer upwards would result in a clockwise
rotation if the centre of rotation is to the right of the current view but
anti-clockwise if it was to the left of the current view.

I'm sure that that problem could be overcome (some indication of where the
centre of rotation lies) - the real issue is that the unified transform tool
(which is brilliant as far as it goes) would be made much more useful if you
could use extra views to look at magnified sections of the image that the UT
tool was acting on in the main view.

[Gimp-user] make the sky bluer (color selection and editing)

2019-01-26 Thread ottenm
Partly solved!

> I don't know how to select by color, but only within a certain area of the
image.

Select the "certain area of the image" first.
Then Select by Color, but change the Mode to "Intersects"
Then click on the color you want to select.

Still need to take those selected areas/colors and drag them toward a darker
blue. Will continue the search ...

[Gimp-user] Batch Image Manipulation, it's time to implement it in GIMP

Unable to compile BIMP2 for Gimp 2.10.x? It throws up lots of warnings but no
errors. Possible reasons:

A mix of non-compatible dependencies.

Using the Gimp flatpak (or snap) This version is 'sandboxed' and installed dev
packages are not seen.

A quick demo (using ubuntu 18.10) might give a clue where the compile fails on
your installation.

https://youtu.be/XlPKUX62JcA duration 4 minutes

Attached the BIMP2 binary from that. This does work in a (k)ubuntu 18.04 Worth a
try.

However, the previous BIMP 1.18 still works with Gimp 2.10.x

I agree about scripting, Scheme or Python, equally akin to Sanskrit for the
average Gimp user.

[Gimp-user] Problem completing install Mac

2019-01-26 Thread MtnMarty
Using system 10.14.2 (Mohave). I can install the program. When I open it, I go
through the steps to authorize installation and it opens and is functional. But
the application is never installed, just the installer dmg and I must go through
this each time I open the program. I've opened the lock in the privacy section
of the system preferences, checked allow install, etc. However, only the
installer remains on my drive. Would appreciate some help. Thanks.

Thanks, I'll try that. I only added the jpgs to demonstrate the expected and
actual outcomes, the problem lies in the original gif files anyway.

[Gimp-user] Exporting .gif files corrupts color information.

Best guess. Your game is using the grey (#878787) for a transparency mask,
rather than the more usual white.

In the original gif entry 255 is that color and selecting it (right click in
color map) shows the extent (1). There is another #878787 in the colormap and
only assigned to a few pixels (2)

In your export entry 255 is not set and the #878787 grey is assigned to that
other #878787 (3)

To get a gif out in that format (4)

Add an alpha channel

Set the BG colour to #878787

Export as a gif.

Can not comment on the other images, they are jpegs. It will be some screw-up
with a non-standard colormap.

[Gimp-user] Exporting .gif files corrupts color information.

2019-01-26 Thread Blasphemous
Hi,

Here's the problem I'm facing, there is no short description though:

I'm attempting to edit gif files which contain graphics used in Civilization 2
game. That's a 1996 game and it is highly customizable and as you can imagine,
highly outdated.

What worked before the days of windows 10/8/7 was just using the MS paint.
However, at some point, that application started to completely mess up the
colors. So I moved to GIMP and all was well, for a while. I stopped making new
game scenarios but recently wanted to start again.

However, upon changing anything in the file and exporting it, when I load the
game, a certain color used for borders between units and/or terrain types is
evidently not correctly saved and it shows up in the game, while it should not.

What normally happens is the game recognizes that particular color used in gif
files and does not show it during the gameplay, since it's only used to depict
said borders for the purpose of editing the graphic representations of various
features.

The worst part is that that I don't even touch the parts of the image that use
this color. Just exporting the file immediately upon opening it is enough.

I have attached the "before" and "after" files.
Beyond compare shows the same RGB values for all colors.
Size between files differs - 183 bytes appear to be missing so obviously some
information is lost after exporting.
The color in question is the grey background - value 135 for all three RGB
colors.

I said this already but this wasn't always the case - I used to be able to edit
these same files with GIMP many years ago and exported them without issues.

Also, when I export the file as BMP, which is also an acceptable format for the
game engine, the issue does not exist, UNLESS I touch any of the gray color, in
which case, the result is the same. Editing anything else seems to work fine
with BMPs.

For comparison, I used PSP trial version and it allowed me to freely edit any of
the colors and there were zero issues upon exporting the end result.

I have messed around with the vast plethora of preferences and options in GIMP
but I am far from being an expert and so far there has been no improvement. I
suppose the problem lies with some additional information that should be
exported with the file but is not. I can't be certain though.

Could somebody take a look at the problem I'm facing?
I would be very grateful. I really like GIMP since for the basic and casual
needs that I have, I've managed to learn all the stuff that I need and I'd hate
to switch to another application just because of, what I think, is a small
issue.

Thanks in advance for your time and let me know if there's anything else I could
provide to help resolve this.

[Gimp-user] make the sky bluer (color selection and editing)

2019-01-26 Thread ottenm
I have a landscape photo filled with trees. Through the trees you can see
dozens of sky and cloud spots in the background. I'd like to select the blue
sky areas (a fairly large range of blues), and shade them all a little darker
toward one of the bluer sky colors in the image.

I'm comfortable with selection by color, and adjusting the threshold to include
more/less. But I don't know how to select by color, but only within a certain
area of the image. In other words, selecting by color and clicking on one of
the sky spots, is selecting dozens of non-sky spots all over the image that I
don't want to change (say, blue flowers, cars, and so on).

Once I get the right blue spots selected, I'd like to find a fluid way to
drag/explore the color changes. I've used Color Exchange, but only to set one
color, then set the other color, then the thresholds, then hit ok to see how
that one change looks, then go back and change the settings and run again). Is
there a way to get my blues selected, and watch them change as I drag toward the
darker shades, stopping when they seem just right?

Thank you for any help. Apologies for the wordy descriptions.

[Gimp-user] How do I get my photo to look like it does on the Galaxy 8 cell phone?

2019-01-26 Thread cingib via gimp-user-list
I have a Galaxy 8 (samsung) that uses an Amoled screen, which makes my
photos really pop (extremely sharp and color is amazing). Unfortunately,
when I try to pull them up on my computer screen, they look flat and fuzzy.
I've been trying to use different photo editing programs (including Gimp),
but they really just don't capture it. Is there a way to EASILY transform
these photos to look at least a little bit as good as they do on the phone?
(Please don't reply with a lot of technical advice... just the basics would
be helpful!). THanks!
