There are two colour pickers available in 2.8. (At least true for 2.8.22
as in the Linux Mint repository)

Both are available from the Toolbox.

The first is accessible from the "Eye Dropper" button, which can only
select from the image.

The second is accessible from the overlapping Foreground/Background
colour tool. When you click on either of the foreground/background
rectangles a colour picker dialogue opens and that includes an eye
dropper that will select a colour to use for that rectangle anywhere on
the screen.

No, it shows the full fontname and a sample - if you are seeing just
Aa, click on the icon at the lower right of that dialogue (in a right-
to-left locale it might be at lower left).
I'm using 2.8.10 (the latest available in the default Linux Mint

together with the font name - and for my purposes that is rarely enough.
I frequently want to be reminded what form the lower case a or g take
and whether it differs dramatically in upright and italic form.

However, thanks to your prompt I hunted around and only just discovered
the pre-installed script that generates an image that does what you
describe using whatever whatever phrase to decide for the sample.

And that will be good enough for my purposes on those occasions when I
need the facility.

Thanks for forcing me to investigate!

Re: [Gimp-user] resolution

2016-11-12 Thread Greg Chapman

Hi Hija,

What Rick is trying to explain is that there is no such thing as "real
resolution".

The number of dots/pixels per inch you see depends on how big you
display each pixel or, looking it the other way, how many dots you
squeeze/stretch into a given space.

The first dialogue that Rick points you to will tell you how big an
image will display/print at the given resolution.

Given the number of pixels in the image, the second dialogue allows you
to adjust either the size of the finished image so you can see what the
resolution will be at that size, or the resolution to show you how big
that would make the image.

If you wish to to have your default resolution be 300ppi rather than
72ppi, then go to

EDIT > PREFERENCES > DEFAULT IMAGE

and set the X-resolution and y resolution as you wish.

The default of 72ppi is a somewhat historic figure based roughly on the
monitors available in the early days of the PC, but still remains a
"standard" for many software products.

What print resolution you have set?

The default is, I believe, around 72 pixels/inch, which makes for pretty
fuzzy printing. 300 might be more appropriate for a reasonably sharp
image. The dialogue will tell you what size your image will print at.

What have you then scaled to, to achieve an appropriate size for
printing at the size you want?

How did you go about printing? If you did something like export the
resulting image to a JPG file and print that, any text will have become
as fuzzy as the rest of image if it had inadequate resolution.

If you are saying that you scan to a PDF then that is entirely

However, in case newcomers are reading, it should be pointed out that
it is pretty pointless for an image to be displayed on a web page,
where dpi is completely irrelevant. For screen display all that
matters are pixels. For that purpose you scale to the desired width

image, so you can set it against color and not have a tacky white

select by color tool, but I'm not sure if this is working or not.

The Select by color or Fuzzy select tool should do the job of
selecting the white area, producing a set of marching ants around
the selected colour.

However, before you do that you need to Add Alpha Channel to the
layer. It is that channel that allows an area to become transparent
when you delete a selection.

Then hit the DELETE key and the selected area will become transparent
showing a grey checkerboard to indicate transparancy.

I wanted to do the same for some black stray lines, but it didn't
work at all.  But for this, I could get rid of them with the eracer
 tool.

You probably just made them white - the eraser simply paints in the
background colour (whereas the pencil and brush, etc paint in
foreground colour), so in this case it just happened to be the colour
you wanted.

Also, instead of saving as a GIF file, it insists on saving
this as a GIMP image!  Why is this??

Because GIMP will only SAVE to its native format (.xcf). If you want
to produce a file in another format you must EXPORT it and choose the
desired file format.

Re: [Gimp-user] Resize Pictures to Print

Does anyone know if a picture can be resized to print in a
different size? I am trying to print a 5x7 and I have scoured the
tools in Gimp and even tried to do it through my printer to no
  avail!

Are you missing the Image Size Units and Resolution buttons on the
Scale Image dialogue.

Setting them appropriately should do what you want.

This may be a function of your windowmanager, which you failed to
mention. KDE has the ability to designate specific windows to
maintain size and position in addition to which desktop.

Yes, even Windows allows you to set shortcut to launch a program
maximised.

Right-click the Start Menu icon. Select Properties and under the
Shortcut tab on the Properties dialogue that opens, you'll find an
option to run Normal Window/Minimised/Maximised.

Re: [Gimp-user] HATE the new save vs. export behavior

2012-05-04 Thread Greg Chapman
Hi Alexandre,

On 04 May 12 06:52 Alexandre Prokoudine
alexandre.prokoud...@gmail.com said:
The problem I see in this thread is that few people tell us exactly
what they do and then complain that we don't do the right thing for
 them.

80% of the time I load a .jpg to make some minor edits (use the Curves
tool to adjust brightness, contrast or white balance, Crop to control
composition and Scale to size an image for web use).

When doing that task the only change with 2.8 is that I must select
Export, instead of Save As from the File menu. No sweat!

Almost all of the other 20% of my time with the GIMP is making up
collages of images or using the tools from producing fancy text or
buttons or similar small decorative graphics for web sites.

In the past, I have sometimes regretted that I have not saved an .xcf,
when I come to make changes to those images. The new approach the GIMP
forces on me will encourage better practice.

In short, it makes perfect sense to me that a high end bitmap editor
should, by default, save in its native format and export to other
formats.

Just about every other program I know uses this pattern. Yes, it may
mean I need to change my practices slightly, but it's hardly a chore
and the change the GIMP team has decided to make, makes perfect sense
to me.

Keep up the good work!

I'm not sure if posting one's work is a thing, but I'm going to do
it anyways :P If this is not the right place for this, please feel
 free to remove this post!

Well, this is a mail list to support users of The GIMP, so posting
finished work is not what is expected, rather a description of how the
finished work was achieved, so others can learn from it. It is method
that will find people here willing to critique, not the final image.

So post links to the component images and the description of the
processes used, in as much detail as possible, and ideally, the final
.xcf file before you exported the .png
