No, and I have checked my spam and trash folders as well.
I cannot stop any particular email address from subscribing to the

Doubtless there are some smart answers to come, but my method is to use
"Edit Invoice" off the top bar and alter the number

So if it is invoice 700 that is unfinished, I'd change the number to
700TODO

Then I can search for invoice numbers containing the string "TODO"

I think it is a philosophical difference.
There are legal ramifications, especially when you are spending money.
If you future date transactions you may spend money you don't actually
have. In my jurisdiction a business doing this is in big trouble, for
"trading while insolvent".
It is not the difference between cash and accrual accounting, but is
part of the differences.

It contains more customisations than just having Tax Invoice.
The tax can be specifically named GST etc.

Using a saved report means that the changes are preserved through

If you are on a multi-user OS, then you can have different book

If this is an ongoing need, consider making some more logins, one for

A bar code reader is simply a serial or USB entry device. It will give

Turning those listed numerals into an item requires a database and a

My experience was with trying to catalogue the books in our house,

It is correct that the email sent from the list could contain advice on
the appropriate "reply to", but the long standing choice of the admins
is not to set a "reply to".

Here is Mailman's opinion
"reply_goes_to_list (general): Where are replies to list messages
directed? Poster is strongly recommended for most mailing lists.

This option controls what Mailman does to the Reply-To: header in
messages flowing through this mailing list. When set to Poster, no
Reply-To: header is added by Mailman, although if one is present in the
original message, it is not stripped. Setting this value to either This
list or Explicit address causes Mailman to insert a specific Reply-To:
header in all messages, overriding the header in the original message
if necessary (Explicit address inserts the value of reply_to_address).

There are many reasons not to introduce or override the Reply-To:
header. One is that some posters depend on their own Reply-To: settings
to convey their valid return address. Another is that modifying
Reply-To: makes it much more difficult to send private replies. See
`Reply-To' Munging Considered Harmful for a general discussion of this
issue. See Reply-To Munging Considered Useful for a dissenting opinion.

Some mailing lists have restricted posting privileges, with a parallel
list devoted to discussions. Examples are `patches' or `checkin' lists,
where software changes are posted by a revision control system, but
discussion about the changes occurs on a developers mailing list. To
support these types of mailing lists, select Explicit address and set
the Reply-To: address below to point to the parallel list.

At this stage, consider how you could use the search feature to find
these sort of errors.
If the deposits have a unique description, search for that description
in the account and then check that all the entries are in the
appropriate column.
Sadly the autocomplete features autocomplete errors equally as well as
good work, so think about how you can get the accounts sorted out other
than through the reconcile feature.

My simple take is a disaster.
The program inserts a transaction which "balances" the account.
I've made the error once and not done it again, as I had to undo it all
and then fix up the genuine errors in the reconciliation.

There are some videos in English available. I can't tell whether they

Another way of approaching this is to duplicate your book for the
purpose of learning how to run an import or other more complex job.
Then you can import the transactions, and instead of having to try to
delete stuff, just start again on a fresh copy until everything is to
your satisfaction

It is a bit more complex, because Marcondes Araújo is not subscribed to

Then John replied to Adrien's message, and then Marcondes was not

It wasn't worth the trouble, as others have mentioned, making a note on

Running "dpkg-reconfigure locales", not adding any and setting the

I just don't know, and having used rsync -av to move everything, I am

I've just had to do this because I dropped my laptop.
I've gone from 4.14 to 5.1 in the same move.

I've transferred my ~/ (home directory) from one computer to the new
one.
Gnucash opens, but a lot of my preferences are gone, and even which is
my next invoice number.
I open Gnucash > Help > About, and attach the screenshot.

This tells me where to look for my preferences, data etc.
GNC_USERDATA_DIR is /home/liz/.local/share/gnucash
Nope, my data files are in subdirectories of
/home/liz/Nextcloud/gnucash/
My *.gcm files are under books in ~/.local/share/gnucash/

$ ls /home/liz/.local/share/gnucash
accelerator-map deviceidhashsaltsqif-accounts-map storage
booksexpressions-2.0 saved-reports-2.8
stylesheets-2.0 checks hsts-storage.sqlite
saved-reports-2.8-backup translog

GNC_USERCONFIG_DIR is /home/liz/.config/gnucash
Nope, this directory is empty (and I checked two other computers that
have shared this data and all are empty directories here)

What does the FAQ say?
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_I_moved.2Frenamed_my_data_file_and_my_reports_disappeared._How_do_I_get_them_back.3F

"Reports are stored in a separate file in the ~/.gnucash/books
directory."

Nope, no such directory
$ ls ~/.gnucash/books
ls: cannot access '/home/liz/.gnucash/books': No such file or directory

OK, I am supposed to know what I am doing, and I can't this time,
having advanced from 4.14 to 5.1, find where to put my preferences
file(s).

There is a serious disconnect between the documentation and the new
version here.
I can understand that a person less familiar with Gnucash could have a
lot of difficulty moving to a new computer.

And by the way, where does the new version expect to find my *.gcm
files??

I was thinking that the user would check the output, and see if
gwenhywfar or aqbanking were in the list to be upgraded before
upgrading any packages.
As you note, they wouldn't be, and then the next option is to build the
required packages as well as Gnucash.

One way of doing this is with an intermediate account. You take the
cash from 22nd July and put it in the intermediate account, which could
be called "undeposited funds" or "cash on hand". You do the
same with the cash from 29th July. On banking day you put the cash from
the cash tin in the bank, and move it in your books from the
intermediate account to the bank account.

Summary
Physical movement of funds

collection > count done > cash tin
2nd collection > count done > cash tin > count done again

cash tin > bank (and another count)

Recorded movement of funds
collection > cash on hand
2nd collection > cash on hand
cash on hand > bank

I'm sure you will sort this out shortly.

Thanks for that, now I have understood.
You are depending on the bank's version of your account(s) to maintain
your view of your accounts.
Your view is of course far more up to date, because you know that the
money was transferred from X to Y.

These are personal choices on how you maintain your accounts, nothing
is right nor wrong. I had initially thought that you had made an entry
in Gnucash and that entry had lost one side of the transaction.

Cheques (checks to you) have multiple delays in processing and data
entry in any bank's procedures.
Personally my wages go by direct transfer from business to personal, on
a regular schedule booked online with my bank.

On occasions Gnucash refuses to delete a split which is not the
anchoring split to the register.
I see it about twice a year, I have never chased down the cause, and
find it easiest to Jump to another register and remove the split

One method of approaching this is the binary split method.
Instead of all 2022, split it into two parts, try importing one.
If it fails, ignore it, and try the other one.
Split the one that fails...

Repeat until you find the problem, then deal with the problem.

We do suggest importing small files sequentially to train the
importer, so you may choose to stick with small files until 2022 is
finished.

 +1
As every item can belong on a different depreciation schedule I do them
all after purchase until value zero, then I am not trying
to work out which percentage or any other variable in the future. I
just note my method so that the accountant can check I was choosing the
correct rate.

It's come from the same purveyors as many other things which sound good
but don't work in the real world.
Data can get changed at any point, and it doesn't have to be as obvious
as a lightning bolt hitting your house. Automating the proceedings
doesn't guarantee accuracy, it hides the potentials for error.

When you write your script to do this little task, there are
opportunities to add to or subtract from the data. That's what scripts
do well ;)

Bite, this is an interesting idea, but to me reconciliation requires
human input.
While I manually reconcile, I have to attend to pending transactions,
for example a payment made on a card which never is taken from the bank
account. At what time do I take that from the active list? Where will I
put the the never finished transactions?

A number which is different in my list to the banks? How will I check
for the correct number? When do I contact the bank?

They are human decisions, different in each jurisdiction.
They are the reason I reconcile - not to have my numbers the same as
the banks, but to see the discrepancies and decide on an action.

Could you please describe more what you want from automated
reconciliation? Your statement about "human-caused errors" implies that
reconciliation introduces errors rather than highlights them.

I use them to create invoices and check that I have been paid but not to
pay money out.
Just going back to the data entry error, you typed 'P' and got
'payroll'.
You can make sure that all your accounts have fairly unique first two
letter combinations, so 'Pa' would be Payroll and 'Po' Postage. Then
typing 2 letters should get the correct account, or you may decide to
type three letters as a habit.

I am loath to add more advice, because I'm not sure where you are in
solving this.
Let's just imagine that you have just found the error, that the
reimbursement is in the wrong account in your books. Maybe you
found it when the bank account reconciliation was incorrect.
At this point
Did you add the transaction to the bank account in Gnucash?

Go to your Expenses:Travel account. Is that reimbursement recorded once
or twice there?
You would expect to have one entry, linked to the bank account. It
should decrease your expenses.
If you have two entries, delete the one linked to the credit card.
If you have one entry, and it is linked to the credit card, edit it to
be linked to the bank account. Of course, any of us would have already
noticed an extra thousand dollars in a bank account and tried to find
the reason. ;)

Thanks Adrien
No I didn't have any reversed balance accounts set
and it wasn't the Payroll tax, that was OK.

'Super' is the standard way of pronouncing 'Superannuation' here, and
that is retirement savings in plain English.

The image is the three monthly accounting for GST and company tax
prepayment (PAYG) and the monthly payroll tax payment.
Liabilities: Tax Liabilities is the same value as
Expenses: Salaries : tax payments
Expenses:Company Tax is after Geoff put me straight

Part of my problem was calling everything "Tax" instead of being more
specific.
Now if I rename the Expenses:Salaries:Tax payments to Ex:S:Payroll Tax
that could help the next lot of confusion.

For those who wonder why I have so many blanks in a scheduled
transaction, every three months I do some computation to fill in the
blanks.
A prepared template means I don't miss any and claim everything they
owe me.

I accept that there is likely a logical fault in my account setup.

I'm not sure how or where, certainly when I pay my tax out of the bank
account my liability for paying tax goes down.

So at the end of the month I enter a transaction by scheduled
transaction to list my wages, tax and super payments. That transaction
results in an increase in my Tax liability account, which when I pay up
a few weeks later, the liability decreases.

But what I have done, which I'm sure is my problem, is I haven't got
the tax payments going to the correct logical place but recursively I
have hurriedly filed them under tax liabilities.
So my liabilities in my books are increasing regularly instead of being
zeroed.
This payment is the amount which the tax people tell me I'm going to
pay to account for my company tax. They ask for 4 payments each year,
and then the accountant sorts out annually what else I have to pay.

So I think it comes to
What are appropriate splits for the prepayment of my company tax? One
side is tax liabilities, and the other I can't work out.
No use Michael telling me that I need to decide what I would do on
paper, I'm lost.

That's what I do, then check the depreciation tables and then enter a
part year, and then annual depreciation entries until the value is
zero, many years ahead, and I don't look at that again. Reporting can

[GNC] Paying invoices from the edit invoice screen

2022-10-29 Thread Liz
Background
Debian 11
Gnucash 4.11

Workflow
I use the business features to note income which is invoiced through
another program. I copy invoice numbers and amounts into a Gnucash
invoice so I keep track of my income through Gnucash. This money comes
frequently (which is a ‘good thing’) and sometimes I get behind in my
invoicing. Then I can be doing the invoice when I already have the
money in the bank account, and can choose to “pay invoice” from the
dropdown menu for post or unpost the invoice.

Problem
I had noticed money not arriving in Gnucash’ data for the bank account
when I pay the invoice from that dropdown menu. The customer report
showed the money had been paid, but the bank account didn’t show the
deposit. Friday night I spent some time posting, unposting, paying and
unpaying the same invoices until I opened the relevant split in
‘Accounts Receivable’ and found that the money had gone to the
Liabilities top level account. This account has no entries but I have
not marked ‘placeholder’.

Question
Why is the money in Liabilities?
The ‘Process Payments’ child window is defaulting to ‘Liabilities’ when
I have never used this. It used to default to ‘Assets > Bank Account’,
where the money has been deposited. How can I stop this occurring?

It is a great idea to start with a small set of transactions and work
out your methods before starting with lots of transactions.

I had tried to alter an invoice to a different customer and found
myself with a similar problem.
Now I have all of that data under one customer and a customer entry now
called "Reuse me" for next time I have a new customer.

I see Derek said its by design, but it caught me too.
I was not aware that the menu entry "Edit Invoice" had different powers
to choosing "View/Edit Invoice" from a search panel.

I have seen this happen when trying to move a transaction to another
account, for example when I entered the transaction in the cash ledger
and had really paid by card. When pasted into the card account, I would
find a deposit instead of a withdrawal.
I haven't ever taken the time to report and discuss the problem, but
learned that jumping to the Expense account involved and moving the
transaction from there was more reliable.
I have vague memories that it wasn't always like this, but I've been on
Gnucash since about V1.6 and I didn't pay attention to when this
started.
I haven't even tried it more recently to see if I can still reproduce
the problem.

Summary: I also think copy and paste of a transaction has problems.

You have chosen to receive mailing list mails as a digest. There is an
alternative, where you get each email individually.
Your method of replying to a digest is appropriate, other than please
remove the excess because there are still some people on this list on
slow internet.
We ask that you "reply to list" or "reply to all" to keep the
conversation in the archives.
It may be appropriate to reply to an individual, but for those
searching the archives it is helpful to find the answers and not just
the questions.

As for Australian law on advice? You can get your medical advice from
anybody on Facebook but not your financial. I guess the legal firms and
government entities uploading financial advice are covered by employing
people who are allowed to give advice.

I've altered the text at the bottom of the emails very rarely. I guess
I could add something about "ask your accountant" in the future.

I too alternate between desktop and laptop.
I host my own Nextcloud instance and syncing is automatic after each
save. I have had problems when something went wrong with network
connectivity. At this point I have different files, and the server
keeps a copy of each so you can recover more easily.

Being able to use the laptop has increased the accuracy of my records -
when travelling I can still record purchases in the main accounts, and
gave up use of the Gnucash app on the phone.

Not that I remember how to do it, because it has been working for many

My menu, under "Office" has

Gnucash Business

Rich when I get into a mess, I do very small increments on the
reconcile. For example, just choosing a date about 10 transactions
down, or one week, and then I will go through very slowly, doing small
chunks.
Assume this is one month, and I am doing weekly...
I find the bank's ending balance for 7th of month, put 7th of correct
month and the balance from the bank statement into the reconcile
dialogue, and check off that week's items from the bank statement. When
the residual is zero, I mark finished, and move forward to the 14th.
(Procedure loops)

By looking at such a small number of transactions it is possible to
find whatever the errors are.
I too have been on Gnucash for a couple of decades, but still found 4
errors in one file this March, payments not entered as received, and
digit transposition.

I hope you find what is happening and let us know.

Ubuntu seems to be very slow getting updated Gnucash versions, building
it yourself would be worthwhile and should be much less than 3 months.

I'm assuming here that you mean "manufacture a widget" for assembly and
build.
There are other meanings of build that software developers use.

When I make an invoice I can invoice different items. I can invoice
Time, different types of Service, and different Goods.

We don't know how you account for manufacturing costs when you invoice,
nor how you spread this income in your accounts. If you give some more
details, someone who is already doing similar with Gnucash can advise.

Remote access can be achieved, but it involves technological knowhow to
do it safely and securely.
You could decide to email the file each reporting period, and have the
accountant make any notes and email it back. I make the reports that my
accountant needs and provide those.

Keeping up to date with Gnucash is a *good idea*. Catching up when your
version is a long way behind is difficult.
I am not usually on the *latest* but one or two releases behind.

What to back up is covered in the FAQ
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Questions_about_Backups
which I see now leads to longer articles in the wiki

And we are short of information, too.
Can you write out what you are trying to do first?
Then someone can help you chose an appropriate report.
Then we can progress to the next stage.

You need to have some idea on the tax implications of your expenses.
In AU, this is where we start to rival North American sales tax ;)

So some expenses are recurring - like rates and insurance and are tax
deductible
Some expenses are general maintenance - the bills from the plumber and
electrician for callouts and are tax deductible
Some expenses are capital - when you decide to replace the kitchen
because it is wear and tear and scruffy, but not if it is seriously
damaged by floods (topical here), that would be maintenance or on the
insurance.

Some expenses can be sent back to the tenant to pay (here we charge
water usage to the tenant, but not if you didn't fix the leaky taps or
cistern)

Whether interest charges on the mortgage you have over the property are
expenses which are tax deductible or capital expenses depends on the
flavour of government - it seems to oscillate slowly here.

If you are not sure about the expenses, make lots of expense
subaccounts to keep them in general categories, and rationalise them
when you have had a chat with your accountant. In GnuCash its easy to
join subaccounts and tedious to split them.

Last century, when it was easier to reach political consensus, state
sales taxes were all abolished. Now the States argue over the carve up
of the pie.
But there are plenty of other taxes to make life exceptionally complex
here, do not worry, the accountants and tax people have plenty to keep
them busy.

It's incredibly complex. And Australians have all been led to believe

And as the person with the password to subscribe and unsubscribe
people, I am not going to do such a thing on that sort of request.

My mail client will happily substitute different email addresses so I
am well aware that something which says its from a person's email may
well not be. Requests can be genuine or not.

To unsubscribe yourself you need your password, and can have one sent
to you to accomplish the task.
