Re: [Goanet] Miracles
From: Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- On Tue, 8/26/08, Fr. Ivo C da Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dr.Santosh asked for a double-blind control (read below), admitting himself that this is difficult for such rare cases. The proposed method itself excludes all miracles. The proposed method is what is called scientific method. Only when one follows that method can one honestly claim that an intense scientific procedure was conducted ***Miracles are special cases, rare, extraordinary, unexplained, sometimes even unrepeatable. Your scientific method cannot be used, as you only admit. Even now I cannot understand your method for such cases. About your scientific method, it is the method to be used for common clinical cases. We have studied it in Science, Epistemology and Sociology. Both Jose and Fr. Ivo are Catholics who believe in miracles. ***As a Catholic, I would accept the possibility of miracles, as the Church teaches, but would not accept as miracles those of Lourdes or those required for the Canonization of Saints, unless the scientific criteria are strictly being verified, as it is required by the Bishops and the Medical Committees. ... However, in stark contrast to Fr. Ivo, Jose has always said that he believes in them because of his faith... ***This is not true, as Dr.Jose has already replied to you. ...just like my scientific colleague and friend Jean-Baptiste here in Houston. These men of science never claim that there is scientific evidence for their beliefs, or that someone has conducted an intense scientific procedure to confirm their beliefs, or that their scientific reasoning somehow supports what they believe based on faith. That is why I respect their position, and have no argument against their beliefs. ***This is a poor compliment to them and to the Christians who do so. A common Christian will believe as the Church proposes (not everyone can try to deepen in the same way). But every Christian has the duty to deepen his study of Christian Faith. Scientific evidence or reasoning can be also historical evidence, substantiated wherever possible with modern scientific experiments. If your friend-scientist does not find rational, historical, theological grounds for his Faith, then he is still a child in his knowledge of Christian Religion. He needs to increase and update his knowledge, as he is doing in the scientific field... Fr. Ivo, on the other hand, despite the fact that he does not come from a scientific background, persists in making all kinds of bogus scientific claims in support of his beliefs, and in misrepresenting the nature of science and its purpose, in the service of his faith. That is why I am compelled to respond to his pronouncements about science in this public forum. ***Precisely you are trying to do something that surpasses your strength, because you yourself admit that Science does not have anything to do with the 'supernatural. You are trying to deny the existence of God and of miracles in the name of Science. I have the duty of replying to you and show the rationale of Christian Faith. Biblical exegesis studies the biblical narratives scientifically, with all the modern ressources in the literary, historical and theological field. Had he confined himself to preaching his religion, and expressing his pure faith in miracles and the supernatural, devoid of any reference to science, as Fr. Botelho and others have done in the past, I would have left him alone. ***You are absolutely wrong. Christian Faith is not pure faith in miracles. It is a historical event, it has its basis in history and therefore, it is observable in itself or in its effects. It transcends the natural phenomena but it has an impact on the nature. We are not preaching Resurrection of Jesus which is a 'figment of faith', but is a historical event. God intervenes in the history of humankind. If the Resurrection is a fact, then Christianity exists; if it is not, then Christianity does not. Saint Paul states it clearly: If Christ has not risen, all your faith is a delusion; you are back in your sins (1 Cor 15:17). Christianity is not God-delusion. Fr.Jude Botelho has been giving Sunday homilies, with reflections for life (some Goanetters called it junk). He is not dealing with theological and scientific issues. I am dealing with the debate on issues such as evolution, Big-Bang, miracles, Resurrection. Dr.Santosh has read a lot of literature on these issues. He should read books on God's existence, Resurrection, Virginal Conception of Jesus, miracles written by Hans Kueng, Raymond Brown, Juan Alfaro. They study the issues from all angles. We cannot preach a religion which is devoid of any reference to science, because Incarnation is a historical fact, it is God's intervention through Christ. We cannot tell 'lies' or 'fairy tales' to the people. Thanks to the efforts of Dr.Santosh to reduce God and Christianity to 'figments of
[Goanet] Why can't India develop world-class athletes???
Date: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 09:11:20 + (GMT) From: edward desilva [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well! Well! well! I have spent more time outside of Goa than in it. Allahabad, Jabalpur. Bengal, Madhya Preadesh (Indore, Satna etc). Mario asks: In that case you must know that your previous comments were false. For example, a) Because belpuri and pakora diet is not good enough, and b) If any one tries to educate them, they are burnt alive. Edward wrote: Hockey is a team effort - got that! Mario responds: Got it. But what you don't seem to have got is that India did not qualify for Olympic hockey in 2008 whereas it used to win every Olympic gold medal in hockey in the early and mid 20th century, when they were also eating bhel puri and pakoras according to you. Edward wrote: Hockey players are mostly from the Military?employment and the Railways, I know, my cousin was one of them, they do nothing but play Hockey all day. Mario responds: Thanks for making my point, which is that India is not able to produce world-class athletes, even when those in the military and railways play all day. I still haven't seen a sensible explanation from you as to why a giant intellectual superpower like India cannot produce world-class athletes when so many tiny and poor countries develop world-class athletes year in and year out. Just look at what China has achieved in such a short time span. They did not dominate any world-class sports when they were 100% communist, now their gold medal count exceeded the USA.
[Goanet] MELBOURNE GOANS CELEBRATE WORLD GOA DAY 2008: A REPORT
MELBOURNE GOANS CELEBRATE WORLD GOA DAY 2008: A REPORT Way back in the year 2000, the concept of having Goans the world over get together to celebrate their state, their lifestyle, their language and their culture was mooted by Mr. Rene Barretto, an eminent Goan settled in the United Kingdom. That gem of an idea is what resulted in an annual fiesta called World Goa Day and is celebrated by the Goan Diaspora the world over in the month of August; close to the actual day which is the 20th of August. Goans in Australia too have been celebrating this day, as the day when they can show off their unique culture. While different places celebrate this day in different ways, here in Melbourne this great day is organised and celebrated on an annual basis by Melgoans, whose signature dinner dance called World Goa Day 2008 was recently held on the 23rd of August, at the packed Springvale City Hall, Springvale. The nite was kick started by their very Goan master of ceremonies, Newton Marques with 'Joe and the Soul Mates' providing scintillating music which brought thrills to the hearts and souls of those present. Nostalgic songs from Goa, in Konkani, the local language of Goans, were sung on the night, bringing many a tear as a wave of nostalgia swept through the main function hall. Prizes galore were also distributed all through the night during the different sets of music played. And while all this excitement was going on, there was a professional DJ, 'A Pros Light Sound' and a separate show in the annexe hall, specially catering to the needs of the young and young at heart! It was a sight to behold as a few not so young people also had a good time dancing to the tunes played on the night by the DJ. Two types of music for the price of one! Among the highlights on the night, was a spectacular 'Elvis Presley' floor show put up by a Goan Elvis, Josephat Fernandes, popularly known as Joe. Elvis thrilled the crowd as he belted old time favourites, and he had to return for an encore! Elvis also distributed roses to some ladies in the hall. Speciality Goan festive food was served and of course 'Sorpotel','Xacuti' and vegetarian dishes were on the menu along with Aussie favourites which included lasagne etc. The banquet was well laid out with a professional display set up, and the meal was concluded with a special Indian dessert called 'Kulfi, Fruit Salad, Tea Coffee. Oscar Lobo, World Goa Day Coordinator in Melbourne thanked his supportive committee - Amanda Faria, Melissa Fernandes, Henrietta Cure Callan Cure. A special thanks to Salus Correia and his family and all the Goans and their friends for gracing the occasion that night.
[Goanet] Empowering the People as written in the Constitution by which the Ministers are sworn in.
Dears, Goa, its built up heritage, its beachfront, rivers, hills and forests can be saved only if the PEOPLE are empowered. Empowering the Zilla Panchayats [District Councils for North and South Goa districts], the Municipalities and the Village Panchayats is the first step. It is not my case that the Sarpanchas and the ZP members are less corrupt. It is my case that: 1. The OPPORTUNITY to be corrupt is on a LOWER FINANCIAL SCALE than at the State Level. 2. Barring a few individuals, we do not have seasoned large scale developers and mine owners in the Village Panchayats 3. Less than a thousand votes make or break a Panch member or City Councillor, hence he is easier to control. 4. The Panch member normally lives in the same ward and is forced to mix socially with the people he could possible cheat. The Editors of most newspapers in Goa [excluding Times of India] do not seem to agree. They have even suppressed a GBA Press Note that calls for greater TRANSPARENCY and PEOPLE'S PARTICIPATION in the Planning Process for the Regional Plan. Till better sense prevails, read it below the press clipping below or read it on TOI epaper of 28 Aug.[it is not yet on the web pages]. Advertising revenues are more important than truth for the daily survival of the local newspapers, it seems. Mog asundi. Miguel Protesting ZP members held, released 28 Aug 2008, 0450 hrs IST,TNN PANAJI: Thirty seven Zilla Parishad members were arrested by the Panaji police as a preventive measure after they undertook an illegal dharna demanding more powers. The agitating ZP members also surrounded the car in which Panchayat minister Babu Azgaonkar was travelling. Panaji police informed that about 48 ZP members gathered near the old Mandovi bridge at about 2.30 pm and attempted to break the police cordon. However, of these, 37 were arrested by the police. Though the ZP members had sought permission to hold the dharna, it had been rejected, said the police. As their action was illegal they were arrested and later released on a personal bond, said Panaji PI, Francisco Corte. The protest was a joint dharna organised by the North and South Goa ZP members, who came together and formed a committee to force the government look into their demands. Under the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution, all rural development works are required to be forwarded through the ZPs and the panchayats. At the moment this is not happening and all development work is being carried out by the MLAs. As a result we can't carry out any development work in our respective areas. What is the use of being in power, if we don't have any power to improve our zilla and help the people, said North Goa ZP chairperson Amol Morajkar. At present, each ZP member is sanctioned Rs eight lakh annually to carry out development work. However, members state that the money is not sufficient. Though an MoU was signed between the state and Central government to confer the powers under the Constitution to the ZP members, we have been denied the same. We have met the chief minister several times but to no avail, added Morajkar. Though the agitating members attempted to meet the panchayat minister on Wednesday, they were not allowed to. However, they stopped the car in which he was travelling and raised slogans. The ZP members were holding placards demanding more powers to the ZPs in the state. [Goanet] Floriano's off-Sunday 'RAMBLINGS' [01]
I have been keenly following the CAG's indictment of the Government of Goa with respect to various departments and how blatantly incompetent they have been reduced to, making heavy losses to the public treasury. But the funny part is that on the one side the public treasury is emptied alright, but on the other side the pocket of those who are in charge of these departments are growing in girth. If it was purely incompetence that ruled, we would have sighed a sigh of relief. There is a limit to growing thick skins. Aren't we Goans shameless? Oh no! Not the ones who have grown thick skins. I mean 'we' who are the passive onlookers and by-standers who compulsively fall in lines to vote during election times. This is well explain by this classic example. A retired Indian Airlines Officer when approached during the 2007 Assembly elections (Aldona Constituency) flatly told me that he was not going to vote this time around. When asked 'why' he said Why? , because I am yet to see a election time gift. People have received sarees, mobile phones, radios and even TVs. I will vote even if I get a bucket, or else I am going to stay at home We read in today's papers that the Health Minister is finalizing another corporation. The cheek of it all is that any Tom Dick and Harry who lends his support to form the government now a days, enjoys the right to make long-term and very expensive policies. [This Bill, best pill - GT - 27/8- front page] There is a limit to such blackmail. A Sarpanch is removed from office through no-confidence motion. And the new one to occupy the chair boasts of the help given to him by a minister and an MLA. [Joseph back as Rachol Sarpanch - Herald 27/8 Pg. 4]. One can see the engineering that is going on. The thinking is: If I have my man at the helm, I have the right of way. Therefore, I am not wrong when I say that almost most Sarpanches are puppets, dancing to the tunes of the politicians. And should there be any one Sarpach who will not tote the politician's line, he is out. The Urban Development Ministry has taken Goans for a jolly good ride over Sonsodo and Goa's garbage in general through HYQUIP. One feels like crying the tears of frustration when tin-pot dadas are taking Goans for a ride through their commanding vote-banks. The line is: 'You vote for me and I will do things for you And these are the things they do when they are elected. [Claude Alvares' expose on Sonsodo-Hyquip-Joaquim Alemao joy-ride] There is a limit to such frauds. The Sonsodo dump is the best place to compost these 'chors', sprayed through AK47s, all in one go. I am sure Goans will celebrate to have a stink like that for once. And to think that on top of this plunder, they invade our households through their sanctimonious (revolting) speeches in the Legislative Assembly telecast live through TV Channels. We Goans haven't had time enough to forget the expose brought out by Deccan Herald, courtesy Devika Sequeira in its 24/Aug/08 edition captioned ' GOA: Lawyer's bid to clean Augean stable' where Vishwajeet Rane, our esteemed Health Minister; Babush Monserrate, our esteemed Education Minister; the Protector of Law Judge Shekar Parab and many others have been playing pocket billiards together. Rajan Parrikar is very right when he says Goa's villains close ranks There is no doubt left in our minds that after having failed to get our back-boneless chief minister to walk straight and tough, they are now tying splints to his weak back-bone so that he may walk aggressively for once to curtail the growing aggressive march of the GRAM SABHAS. And he might just do that. After all the leader of the 'villains' has saved him from suffocating to death in the BJP's Gas Chamber... In'nit? However, there is a glimmer of hope when one reads headlines like these UGUEM PANCHAS RESIGN EN MASSE' [ GT- 27/8- Pg. A2] But this glimmer of hope vanes when it comes to Aldona Panchayat members resigning en masse even after being gheraoed by the mob of people demanding their mass resignation in the presence of a heavy contingent of police with top police brass and Mamlatdars officiating or protecting the villain Panchayat members. [ Aldona VP accused of hiding projects from public scrutiny Aldona panchayat adopts dual policy on structures - [Herald - 27/8 - Pg.7] The Benaulim people's demand is very sensible and just when they demand that the entire Panchayat Raj system be erased from the face of Goa. Infact, it is a shame to saddle Goa with this ineffective and incompetent self-governing system when Goa has its CLASS institutions called the COMUNIDADES, which are being deliberately pushed and pulled to reduce them to ribbons. Who needs these chor Panchayats? And the people who are whining endlessly trying to get more powers to these 'Chor' Panchayats through the Constitutional 73rd amendment must be banned as well from operating in Goa. [Goanet] The Olympics at M.A.D.
Cheers Dears By Augusto Pinto The Olympics at M.A.D. Dears, The regulars were seated at the card table of the Moira Association of Desperadoes [M.A.D.]. As they picked and flicked their cards out, the topic of conversation was the Olympics. Elroy the Birdbrain said,Why is it that our country, of 1000 million souls, does so miserably at the Games? Dadi replied,Arre zod'dia, at least be thankful that the Bindra boy won a gold medal. Added Farrack And that wrestler Sushil Kumar and that boxer Vijender Kumar were also good enough to get a couple of medals too. Usually if we get one single bronze, it's a great thing Elroy retorted, But look at China's gold haul. How can they do it and not we? Dadi said,It's the infrastructure yaar. Do you know the sort of facilities that are required to produce top quality sports sons? Where do we have such facilities? And where are the coaches? added Farrack. Dr. Romulus de Souza Nazare, President of M.A.D. happened to be passing by. Overhearing the conversation, he gave his two pice worth of wisdom in his oratorical style, Indians have no Discipline. How can you excel at sports without Discipline? This country needs a Dictatorship, like China. Only then will there be any Progress. People must be told what to do and they must do it. Like in China. And he went his way. Farrack said,That pompous Fatface should discipline his own son. The way he's been driving the new car that Fatface has bought him, he will kill somebody soon. Dadi said,Arre, Fatface wants to get him into Formula 1 car racing, not into the Olympics. Elroy, Look, come back to the subject. If infrastructure is that big an issue, how is it that countries like Kenya and Ethiopia where people live in even more difficult conditions than us. do so well? Jagadamba, who had once worked in Kenya said,The weather there is very good for athletics. Dhananjay who was a pucca Nationalist replied,What sort of climatic conditions are not available in our Bharat Mahaan? What you talk is nonsense! Joao said,The problem is with our diet. Can our people do anything great after eating these dal and sabji meals ? Joao, had been a chef in the Gulf and was a great believer in the efficacy of the proteins in meat for supplying energy. Dhananjay snorted furiously,What nonsense! Ask any doctor. Vegetarian meals are the healthiest!! Grass is for cows!! - shouted Joao back. Dhananjay lost his cool. I'm not going to listen any more to this tripe!!. Throwing his cards down on the table, he stormed out of the club. After the furore died down, Farrack said,The problem lies with our administrators. Dadi said,You have a point there. Thanks to them we did not even qualify in our National sport Elroy said,I didn't know they have cricket in the Olympics. Dadi said,Arre zod'dia, hockey is our National game, not cricket. Not for nothing is Elroy called Birdbrain, although in this case one could understand his confusion. For once Farrack was sympathetic to Birdbrain. Yes Elroy, it's that giant banyan tree called cricket overshadowing every other game that does not allow any other game to flourish. However, Elroy who didn't like to be patronized by any one retorted,I doubt that. Does not Australia do well in cricket, and hockey and swimming and so many other sports? Fatface was passing back again at this moment. I think it is time to stop moaning about the past, and to chalk out a Concrete Plan of Action. M.A.D. must get children to actively pursue sports. Then only will they have healthy minds in healthy bodies. Just then lovely Sanjeeta, stepped into the club. Said Farrack,Hey Sanju , Dr. Romulus is planning to get M.A.D. to develop sports stars in Moira. Will you get your kids to join his program? Bah!!, replied Sanjeeta, And will those sports feed my kids when they grow up? No one had an answer. Till next time then... Hari is a common name in India and Puttar is Punabji for son, he said.Even if it does rhyme with Harry Potter, surely there is a limit to cases? said Tarun Adarsh, editor of Trade Guide magazine. The film is not a tale of wizard spells or flying broomsticks, but rather a story of an Indian boy left home alone, who fights off burglars when his parents go away on vacation — a plot more reminiscent of the film Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin. Warner Bros. is seeking an injunction against the film, which is set for release Sept. 12. Hearings began Monday and the next is scheduled for Sept. 2. Warner Bros. spokeswoman Deborah Lincoln confirmed that the company has filed a lawsuit against the producers of Hari Puttar.Warner Bros. values and protects intellectual property rights. However, it is our policy not to discuss publicly the details of any ongoing litigation, Lincoln said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. _

[Goanet] IGO - from the Goanet archives
I have had some requests to post the article, The IGO Imbrogolio, which appeared in The Navhind Times. However, I am searching for it. In the meantime I found the one given below which was posted on Goanet in April 1996. - If the IGO is dead, can its part survive? by Eugene Correia Despite the best motives in forming the International Goan Organization (IGO) as one of the vital outcomes of the first-ever International Goan Convention in 1988, the IGO has turned out ot be nothing but a source of irritation and annoyance. The IGO is now dead. I have it on the authority of none other than its secretary-general Herculano Dourado. According to a letter written by Zulema de Souza to the President of the Quebec Goan Association, dated Jan. 4, 1995, she says, At a meeting in Goa in August 1994 between Herculano and myself, it was felt that since there was no move to regenerate the functioning of the IGO, it would be advisable to seek assistance from anorganization outside Goa to carry on the torch of the IGO. We are pleased that your Association will accept the IGO. The Quebec Goan Association has undoubtedly persisted tobe a very active organization and we are glad that it has decided to continue with the concept of an international Goan body. We know that we can look to the future with confidence. In a circular dated Jan. 10, 1995, Zulema de Souza, chair, IGO Toronto, says, The Executive of the Quebec Goan Association, at its last monthly meeting, passed a resolutionagreeing to take over the IGO. We are indeed grateful to them and we know we can look forward to the future with confidence. Nick de Melo, of the Quebec Goan Association, and the Secretary of the Quebec Goan Association, denied that Quebec Goan Association ever accepted to take over the IGO. Both, in a conference call, said that the association wrote to Zulema de Souza that it can'taccept the IGO under its present format. They were obviously implying that the IGO is not properly constituted. The Quebec Goan Association had sent a lot of queries and suggestions when the issue of having a draft constitution was discussed. According to Zulema's circular the draft constitution presented at the meeting would be reviewed and revised by the subcommittee, elected at the meeting, and that the revised constitution would be circulated to all Goan Associations and finalized within six months. This was decided at the International Youth Convention held in Goa in December, 1990. Since the other decision to have a national convention in Goa in 1993 fell through, the draft constitution was obviously not presented. Zulema herself admits that the IGO Toronto was to continue as a subcommittee ofthe IGO, Goa and carry out its planned activities of an Academic Conference to be held inMarch, 1992, and the Technical Train projects. The academic conference took place. And perhaps the visit of five delegates from Goa under the Indo-Canadian Enterprise Exchange Program in November, 1993 is part of the Technical Train projects. The circular also said that an Academic Conference would be held in March, 1995. This event, however, did not take place for reasons not given. The circular also outlines the future goals. It says that 'the IGO sub-committee in Toronto has continued to function. It has been essentiallhy self-financed by the committee members, donations and sponsorships. The circular gives the following options: 1. Restructuring the IGO as well as the IGO sub-committee in Toronto; 2. To energize the IGO by expanding its network to include membership and active participation from other Goan associations in order to effectively manage and deploy resources for future projects; 3. Change the constitution. However, the circular also states that despite the repeated requests, the IGO Secretariat in Goa has not yet set up a committee to prepare a draft constitution and rules for consideration and adoption by the international membership at large. It seems confusing to note how a constitution be changed if a draft constitution hasnever been prepared. Should it mean that the IGO Toronto has a constitution that we are notaware of? If IGO Toronto has a constitution, a copy should have been forwarded to the GOA as GOA is one of the founder members. Since the IGO has been declared dead by its secretary-general, it should follow that all subcommittees are dead, too. Since the Toronto subcommittee had only the mandate to hold the 1992 academic conference, the subcommittee should have dissolved itself after the event. Yet, it continues to stay alive. The Toronto subcommitte had no authority from the secretary-general or the secretariat to hold any future events. Herculano Dourada expressed surprised when told that the Toronto subcommittee was hold an academic conference in 1995. True, the secretariat in Goa was not functioning nor Dourado was able to put

[Goanet] help needed
Hi all, I am reading some old poems written by my mum when she lived in Rangoon in the 1940's. Unfortunately her health is fastly going downwards suffering from a severe bloodcancer. Digging in her past (Burma, Karachi and Belgium) is one way to cherish this special, loving mother. Maymyo memories somewhere mother writes: Lame Lame Ma Kyi Le can someone tell me what it means?? Thanks a lot. My mother had published many poems and prayers in the Catholic (or was it Christian?) Voice in Burma and later after fleeing to Karachi in the their 'Voice'. We are trying to put them all together rather chronologically. If anyone would be interested in some of her writings, just drop a line. All the best, thanks in advance Martin Van Camp - Duarte
[Goanet] Christian Institutions to be closed all over Goa on 29th Aug - Orissa Protests
There is a genocide taking place in Orissa as even alleged by some members of the opposition in the Oriya Assembly. Miscreants are armed with rifles and cutting knives more like the infamous ' machetes' used in certain African countries where they experienced genocides in the past. It seems to be a well planned operation of the Sangh Parivar The administration is but mere spectator to these latest attacks on Christian minorities and something needs to be done urgently . At least a temporary ban on the local outfits of Bajrang Dal and VHP since one must not forget their involvement in the burning of Christian missionaries in the past including that of an Australian missionary and his minor children. Dara Singh member of Bajrang Dal outfit is even allowed to contest elections - I think legislation must be passed to put an end to such anti - national activities carried out by the Sangh Parivar by banning their outfits carrying out violent attacks and spreading the venom of hatred amongst innocent and poor civilians. There must also be a legislation urgently to ban those involved in heinous communal related crimes banning their rights to contest any sort of election in the country. The need of the hour is to save the country from the evil designs of the Sangh Parivar. Let us not forget that Swami Laxminanda Saraswati for whose death Christians are being blamed was in the past involved in molestation of his disciples including a minor and his own disciples involved in defacing statue of Goddess Kalimata to put the blame on minorities... his disciples were caught redhanded and case hushed up by Naveen Patnaik himself There is no difference between Sangh Parivar , SIMI, AL QAEDA ETC - all are evil organisations with nefarious designs and every Indian must unite and seek a ban on the Sangh Parivar including their outfits which are now trying to gain foothold a in Goa as well. Goans instead of fighting each other and further weakening ourselves let us unite and crush these communal elements like Bajrang Dal and VHP who are out to sow discord amongst the people of Goa . Glad to know that the church authorities in Goa have along with other leaders from across India shown solidarity to the Christians in Orissa ,by shutting down all Christian institutions on 29th August. Yes indeed, the cost will be much, much less, even if the govt. had to pay off the Navy to do so. [Goanet] Church in India condemns the murder of VHP Leader and ensuing violence in Orissa
Dear Fr. Caldeira, I believe that the Archbishop of Goa has chosen his words well and said that the Church expresses solidarity with the victims of the several attacks. Why is the CBCI spokesman certifying the respectability of the RSS leader or alleging the link of his assailants with Maoists? Let the Civil society and the Police do their job. It should have been enough if the CBCI condemned the violence by any and all parties to the conflict, unless it wants to imply that the rich and the powerful are respectable and the poor [as in the case of Maoists] are not. Why the hedging when it comes to the misguided in the act of vandalism and arson on the Christian institutions in Kandhamal District indulged in by some misguided and unruly elements? Why not say allegedly misguided by the RSS whose repected leader was allegedly assasinated by the alleged Maoists? I beleive we need a level playing field in the media. Mog asundi. The President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, has denounced the attacks in the following words: We condemn the act of violence which claimed the lives of Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati and some others at his Ashram. We are sad that a respected leader has allegedly been a victim of organised violence by the Maoists. Equally deplorable is the act of vandalism and arson on the Christian institutions in Kandhamal District indulged in by some misguided and unruly elements. We appeal to the people of Orissa to maintain calm at this hour of crisis and bring the tense situation to normal at the earliest so that people and institutions are protected and preserved. Re: [Goanet] GHANTII
Electricity. Water. Phones. They would have come to the villages in good time, increasing the infrastructure maintaining a balance between availaibility and supply, instead of the haphazard growth of supply without increasing the sources of availability, which gave rise to rationing of water and the frequent breakdowns (brownouts and blackouts) of electrical supplies. What the Portuguese gave Goans. There's more to life than electricity, running water, phones, colleges, universities, banks. Basic education - by this I don't mean literacy, but efforts to get everyone to live decently. There might not have been grand roads, but there was access to basic justice. In general, people lived safe. There was no need for bars on windows as was a requirement in cities like Bombay of that time. There were power plants in major cities, but blackouts few and far in between and brownouts non-existent. There were water supplies in the major cities, 24x7 (the same sources of water supplies are still in use). Where there were no bridges, there was river transport in the form of motorised flat-boats or ferries manufactured in Goa which are unique and still in use, now upgraded to have their own ramps (post 1961), besides motor-launches of SANI. The canal system built in Quepem/Chandor/Sanvordem, which few talk about, is still in use today providing possibilities of year-round crops. I believe the farms at Ela were proving grounds for experimental crops like hybrid rice, bananas et al. An international civilian airport at Dabolim, with its own airline TAIP, and its own fleet of aircraft manned by Goan staff. A developed harbour at Marmagoa with a large shipbuilding yard. A powerful radio transmission service (Emissora de Goa) which transmitted Konkani programmes that could be heard as far as the Gulf countries, and as I heard said, also in East Africa. But most of all, cleanliness - clean cities, well laid-out gardens where people could come and relax in the cool of the evenings. Hospitals which were well maintained and clean with a reasonable level of health-service for the major villages of those days. Finally, what the Portuguese also gave Goans, which the Brits did not give the Indians, was full citizenship of their country. This fact alone enabled Goans to assimilate into the various services of the Portuguese govt not only in Goa, but elsewhere in the Portuguese territories, like supreme court judges, heads of departments, etc. Sure, one had to go abroad to get the required qualifications, but given time, Goa would have its own educational systems in place, as it did later on, as the population increased. Goa had its share of poor, but there were Provedorias de Assistencia Publica, Albergues and other institutions to take care of them, in addition to hospitals to take care of lepers and tuberculosis patients. A few indigents used to go from house to house, doing their rounds once a week, but there were no young beggars on the streets as you see now. If I remember correctly, there was an element of free enterprise, which enabled people like Salgaoncars, Dempos, Timblos, Menezes et al to rise high in their business ventures without interference from paper-pushers or red-tape. Equally, there were checks and balances in govt, something which disappeared overnight with the enforcement of Indian-style govt regulations. Radio receiving licences were not required. The requirements for such came post Dec 1961. They were abolished years later (I was overseas by then). Ration cards were unheard of before 1964. Note that Goa got a reasonable good 'phone service only after CHOGM, for obvious reasons, not necessarily to give Goans a good service, but like China of the Olympics, to show what the Indian Govt could do, I suppose, for the occasion. I have tried to put into perspective what many people have not realized. But the fact that India was not prepared to increase funding for development was because Goa was already developed (I believe Prof Nandkumar Kamat had written something on these lines years ago). Unfortunately today, history has proved me wrong. I take no joy in this only the sad realization that Christians and Muslims today in India are facing the same harsh reality Jews faced in Nazi Germany. We are considered non-Indians and second-class citizens in our own country. I have repeatedly said that the Sangh Parivar in India must be baned and its political wing, which is the BJP must be destroyed at all costs. Yet, on this very forum our Catholics tell us that the BJP in Goa in different. Well, I am sorry but the nature of cancer is such that ultimately it metastasis in the entire body. Please vote for the devil if you have to, but please don't bring the BJP back in power in Goa or at the national level. [Goanet] Christian Institutions to be closed all over Goa on
Dear Goanetters, As per e-mail below of Col Cyril. The problem lies with the Catholic Leaders, who should have insisted that the Indian govtmt implement the Mandal Commission granting Reservations for christians in govtmt jobs and educational institutions. It is sad that to see non-christian politicians and police unable to save the christians from atrocities, but if, these people especially the police belonged to the christian community(with the help of govmt job reservations), they would have gone all out to help protect the poor christians. The CM of Orissa should allow Christians in Orissa to be given guns and other weapons to protect thmselves, since he is unable to do so. I challenge the Bishops of Goa to shut down all christian instutions until the culprits are aprehended. [Goanet] ARCHBISHOP'S CIRCULAR ON ORISSA RIOTS
We are pleased to send here below, for your perusal, the approved English translation of the Circular Letter sent by Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao to all the Parish Priests of the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman comprises Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and the original Circular was sent in Konkani. Kind regards, Fr. Francisco Caldeira, Director, DCSCM. Circular Letter To the Priests, Religious, Lay Faithful and People of good will (Approved English version of the Circular Letter No. CP-Cir/202/2008 written originally in Konkani language) Theme: Violence in the State of Orissa Dearly Beloved, The happenings taking place these days in Orissa cannot but cause concern. VHP leader, Swami Lakshananda Saraswati and four of his companions were shot at and murdered in their Ashram and, since then, Christian individuals and institutions are being targeted and destroyed. The Catholic Bishops in India have expressed their sorrow and registered their protest over the killing of the Swami and the ensuing spate of violence and asked for prayers for peace; together with them, we too expressed our feelings over these events: you will have read this on the newspapers. However, there is no guarantee that these chilling events will end soon and there do not seem to be signs that this communally disturbed atmosphere will be cleared easily. Some organizations in Orissa are laying the blame on the Christian Community, thus fanning the anti-Christian communal flame across the State. This has resulted, among other acts of violence, in the tragic burning to death of a woman working at an orphanage and of a paralytic man in his own house. Two priests and a few religious women were also seriously injured. Some priests and nuns have gone into hiding. We cannot remain indifferent in such a situation. We need to express our solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are going through untold suffering. It is with this in mind that we have planned to take the following initiatives in our Archdiocese: All Catholic educational institutions in the Archdiocese shall remain closed on August 29. September 7, Sunday, will be observed as a day of prayer and fasting. A signature campaign will be organized to express our condemnation. Protest Rallies will be held in a couple of places in Goa. More details will follow. In view of the situation in Orissa, we appeal urgently to our Priests, Religious men and women, Christian faithful and all women and men of good will to express their solidarity with those who are suffering so grievously and, through their prayers for peace and communal harmony, to help these programmes meet with success. [Goanet] Jose Feliciano de Quadros (Aug 3rd 1938 - July 16th 2008) - MESSAGE OF THANKS
My family and I would like to thank everyone for the many messages of sympathy and prayerful support we received on the recent death of our Felix. We were very touched by the sentiments expressed and we received lots of courage to enable us to carry out our duty of saying a final and sad farewell to our Felix in Vancouver. We hope and pray that God will grant him eternal peace. Fr Francis (Goan Chaplain) has very kindly agreed to celebrate the Konkani Mass at 5pm, Sunday 31st August, at Our Lady St. Christopher's Church, Cranford in Felix's memory. Once again , with our very grateful thanks regards and best wishes Ciril de Quadros Slough, England Raia, Goa 'no one is so rich that they cannot receive, no one is so poor that they cannot give' Fr Tony Lopez, SFX From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of de Quadros, Ciril Sent: 21 July 2008 17:04 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [goans_tanzanite] Jose Feliciano de Quadros (Aug 3rd 1938 - July 16th 2008) On behalf of my family I would like to inform friends everywhere of the very sad passing away of our brother Felix. He passed away in Vancouver, British Colombia after a short illness and following is a short recap of his life. Jose Feliciano de Quadroons (or Felix as he was more normally known) was born on August 3rd, 1938 in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania After a short time studying in Goat, Felix returned to Dar Es Salaam and worked for the East African Railways and Harbours Board. During his long time with the EARH he also did stints in Tabora, Mwanza, Mtwara and then returned to Dar Es Salaam after the break up of the East African Union. While in Mtwara Felix married Bernadette Gonsalves (who he had met in Tabora) and they had two sons Michael and James. In his younger days Felix played hockey for the various Goan clubs and was a very avid football fan, especially Manchester United. In November 1975 Felix and his family moved to North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Felix worked for the BC Rapid Transit Company until his retirement in November 2007. Felix was always a larger than life figure in our family and was very much loved and respected by all especially the many nieces. With a smile on his face and a strange logic he somehow saw everything very clearly and always had a lot of good advice and help without complain (although I never understood how he liked to listen to Shania Twain - the reason he gave that she was Canadian didn't wash with me, and when I told him that Neil Young was better and a Canadian to boot, he said 'yeah he is good' and after a few minutes 'but Shania is better') Felix is survived by his wife Bernadette and sons Michael and James, granddaughter Edwina, sisters Tereza (Vancouver, Wa), Celina (Seattle) and Yvonne (Seattle) and brothers/sisters-in-law Melecio/Alba (Toronto), Joseph/Alcina (Vancouver) and Ciril/Anna (England) and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The funeral service for Felix will be on Friday July 25th, at 11 am at the Holy Trinity Parish Church 2725 Lonsdale Avenue North Vancouver, BC V7N 3J2 604-988-6304 followed by a reception in the Church Hall with kind regards and best wishes Ciril de Quadros Slough, England Raia, Goa 'no one is so rich that they cannot receive, no one is so poor that they cannot give' Fr Tony Lopez, SFX Visit our website at http://www.halcrow.com The contents of this email are confidential, for the sole use of the intended recipient at the email address to which it has been addressed and do not give rise to any binding legal obligation upon Halcrow companies unless subsequently confirmed on headed business notepaper sent by fax, letter or as an email attachment. Goa badly needs a school of journalism. Basics of good reporting are missing in our local dailies. Like reporting a walk undertaken from Mangalore to Goa.No mention of distance, route, stops etc,but ga ga about reception received at Goa. Dailies dish out some statements of Ministers and those in power with no analytical or realistic coverage of the issueor separating fiction from facts. In Goa ,they need to delve into proliferating multiple frauds and scams, fraudulent projects, and not thoughtlessly spew whatever they are fed. No one questions why any one is ever punished or chastised for default!. Regarding CFLs replacing Street lights. The papers reported how they would save power, and one newspaper did give some report of massive problems/failures.It was reported that defective ones would be replaced and No ISI mark because they were imported ( Answer in the Assembly). Is there any Quality Control Wing/Inspection done? And at what stages? 6. Was this procedure followed regarding procurement of CFLs? If not why not? 7. Were Tenders called for? Give details of those who bid and their quotations. 8 a)How were CFLs of foreign make with absolutely no mandatory information on quality of goods supplied like place/details of manufacturer or MRP accepted and supplied defective/not upto specifications? (No mention of manufacturer, date, MRP, countryof origin on packaging) b) The CFL life, as printed on the packaging is stated to be 8000 hours. Is there any methodology laid down to ascertain/check this stipulation is generally met? 9. Give details of total number CFLs supplied to Sub Stations and reported defective. 10. a) Give details with dates of number of all CFLs returned defective by Sub Stations and replaced . b) Since I reside in Porvorim, kindly indicate dates, number of CFLs supplied, reported defective, returned, action taken at the important Porvorim Sub Station. 11. What is the time frame in the replacement clause, as reportedly assured by the Power Minister, for replacement of defective units? Has it been invoked? 12. Have all the defective CFLs been replaced? If not when will they be? What assurance and how will this be enforced? 12. What was the cost of the Tender awarded and total amount paid to the suppliers of these CFLs? 13. First of all this is a very pointed briefing from Rajan. Good job. Secondly people, I know this may sound ridiculous --needless to say but. perhaps its high time that the people began appyling faeces on the faces of their retarded sarpanchs. They just may start to understand on account of the abulatory odours of their anguished constituents. It is also amazing that no kneecaps have as yet been hammered in. HOW A 20 YEAR OLD GIRL WAS BURNT TO DEATH BY A CHEERING CROWDFr. Edward Sequeira, a priest belonging to the Society of Divine Word (SVD), was one of those who was seriously injured when his mission station was attacked by the mob in Orissa.Currently recuperating at Burla Medical College Hospital, Sambalpur, Fr. Sequeira, upon gaining consciousness, narrated the story to his brother Commodore Valentine Sequeira who writes:A large mob of more than 700 people were returning after attending the cremation of Swami Laxmananand Saraswati who was killed along with four others Saturday evening by suspected Maoist guerrillas at his Jalespata ashram. The mob was chanting anti-Christian slogans and when they reached Padampur in Bargarh district, they attacked the orphanage where Fr Edward lived.Ms. Rajni, a 20 year old student who lived in the orphanage and was also working as an auxiliary nurse in the orphanage confronted them. When Fr Sequeira arrived at the spot, the mob locked him and Rajni into separate rooms, and ordered the children to vacate the orphanage. The mob then ransacked Fr Sequeira's room, poured petrol on him, Rajni and set the orphanage on fire.'I was engulfed in flames, I could hear the cries of Rajni and the mob was cheering and shouting through the windows,' recalls Fr Sequeira. He however, managed to crawl to the bathroom, beat out the flames and closed the windows.'When I started to suffocate I found a crack on the wall that was damaged in the attack and kept my nose there to breath some air. All the while I could hear the cries of Rajni from the next room where she was writhing in agony. After sometime, there was silence and I thought she must have managed to escape from the room,' recalled Fr Sequeira.Unknown to Fr Edward, the girl was burnt alive and had breathed her last.People from the neighborhood who heard the cries of children rushed to the rescue, broke the walls and brought him to safety. That is when the mob attacked him agai n outside the orphanage and beat him up mercilessly till he became unconscious. He was initially rushed to the hospital at Padampur and later with the help of local officials was shifted to Burla Medical College Hospital, in Sambalpur.Courtesy: http://orissaburning.blogspot.com/ _ News, entertainment and everything you care about at Live.com. Even if her 60 year old, chronically ill mother [she was in Intensive Care Unit or ICU for many days] died due to medical negligence, the Resident Doctor is not the one to whom the blame can be apportioned. I wonder if Roland is the type who would go slap the flight purser if the flight is delayed due to a technical snag? Mog asundi. [Goanet] the possible libel case of Saldanha v Correia
Eugene Correia gene_correia@ yahoo.com posted on GoaNet From a recent judgement in Canada. We live in a free country where people ave as much right to express outrageous and ridiculous opinions as moderate ones. Mr. Justice Ian Binnie, WIC Radio Ltd. v. Simpson, 2008 SCC 40 . and added that The above items are posted just to show how fair comment is interpreted by the court in the light of some goanetters saying they are considering legal options for comments made in the debate over the recent Goan Convention. == jc's response to Mr. Correia: likely to be CENSORED by GoaNet Moderators - for whatever reason. This would be in keeping with the recent trend where GoaNet has allowed attacks on Dr. Kevin Saldanha and his family BUT allegedly censored a rebuttal from him.== Dears, I wish to suggest that the Canadian case (WIC Radio Ltd. v. Simpson) identified by Eugene Correia can very easily be distinguished from any potential libel case i.e. Saldanha v Correia The following would be the distinguishing point: In WIC Radio Ltd. v. Simpson, the case was about an OPINION, In Saldanha v Correia, the case would be about an ALLEGATION. Mitigating circumstance (say, of being drunk) cannot be used as Mr. Correia has already challenged any potential assertion that he may have been drunk at the time he wrote his Convention posts. (please see REFERENCE 1) Mr. Eugene Correia has made an ALLEGATION of free accomodation .(please see REFERENCE 2) Mrs. Lisette Saldanha has called this allegation a LIE (please see REFERENCE 3) Mr. Eugene Correia has confirmed that what he wrote was an act of journalism. He wrote the story behind the story - NOT an opinion (REFERENCE 4) In short, it might be able to conform to precedent in WIC Radio Ltd.v. Simpson IF there was an OPINION that X or Y was compared to a scientist, pseudo-scientist, atheist, wanna-be lawyer, Catholic/RSS ideologue, or a marxist. It will NOT conform to the precedent IF anyone would WITHOUT PROOF accuse another of being a child molestor, spouse beater or of having received a bribe or free accommodation or any other benefits. just my view jc Will accept appropriate correction by way of reasoned arguments. REFERENCE 1: http://lists. goanet.org/ pipermail/ goanet-goanet. org/2008- August/079090. html Dear George, you mean to tell goanetters that I was drunk and then went home and wrote the piece. REFERENCE 2: http://lists. goanet.org/ pipermail/ goanet-goanet. org/2008- July/078065. html According to some sources, the Casa de Goa said it would provide free accommodation and hospitality to one representative of a Goan association from each country. To take advantage of this offer, Kevin secured an official letter from the Goan Charitable Organization (GCO). REFERENCE 3: http://lists. goanet.org/ pipermail/ goanet-goanet. org/2008- August/079133. html There are outright lies in your report, a quick phone call to us would have confirmed the allegation that our trip to Portugal last year was not paid by Casa de Goa, Virginia Gomes of Casa de Goa, wrote in her posts on Goanet that we took care of our own expenses..., however there is no retraction of your statement to date. REFERENCE 4: http://lists. goanet.org/ pipermail/ goanet-goanet. org/2008- August/078851. html What I wrote is a story behind the story. Such stories make good journalism as any journalist on this forum will tell you. It is often an unpleasant task to write about people and groups that one knows on a personal basis and not as professional subjects. Such stories do not please everyone and with more than 30 years in journalism I should know. I was nobody's plant or puppet. THE CANADIAN CASE: From Lexis Nexis Canada http://lexisnexis. ca/documents/ 2008scc40. pdf 1: Mair was a sometimes controversial radio talk show host known for commenting on matters of public interest in British Columbia. 2: Simpson was a widely known social activist who opposed the introduction of materials dealing with homosexuality into public schools. 3: Mair disagreed with Simpson's views and in an editorial broadcast on WIC Radio, Mair compared Simpson to Hitler, the Ku Klux Klan and skinheads. 4: Simpson commenced an action in defamation against Mair and the station. 5: Mair argued that the purpose of his words were to convey that Simpson was an intolerant bigot, not that she condoned violence against homosexuals.

[Goanet] Jobs, the poor, and connections to find openings....
QUOTE: Duke University economist, Anirudh Krishna found that many poor Indians in dead-end jobs remain in poverty not because there are no better jobs, but because they lack the connections to find them. Any Bangalorean could confirm the observation: the city teems with laborers desperate for work, and yet wealthy software tycoons complain endlessly about a shortage of maids and cooks. [Goanet] Shravan entry to play National B Chess tournament likely to be rejected without any reason.
Shrikant Barve writes: Dear Sandeep, you know the omissions and commissions of Goa State Chess Association official website launched on March 21, 2008 There are over 400 eligible chess playing children as per coaching program circular. When is AICF going to give coaching facilities to these children? Why are you diverting attention to non issue? Dear Sandeep, you know that I am now busy with The Right Move II-Career in Sports don't trouble me with non issue. I will answer only main issue. Mr. Barve is indeed a confused man. A few days back, he made what has not become another of his customary baseless and reckless statements - - that his son Shravan's entry in the National B Chess Tournament was likely to be rejected on account of his personal feud with Samir Salgaocar and the AICF. I responded to that particular post by categorically letting Mr. Barve know that Samir would do no such thing, since he had had a positive word or two to say about his son during our exchange of words last Sunday in Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias. But Mr. Barve goes on and on with his ravings and rantings. For a good measure, he throws in the AICF circular, the G.S.C.A website and a whole lot of other red herrings to the debate, virtually unconnected to the current issue that we are dealing with and he says that I am diverting attention to non-issues. I will of course respond to all these other issues in a separate post but for now let us stick strictly to the topic on hand, i.e. whether Shravan's entry in the National B Chess Tournament will be rejected. After I responded to Barve's post, an email from the GSCA President popped into my inbox. While it may not be ethical for me to post the contents of that private mail in this public forum, I shall beg Samir's indulgence to make this exception and will post the relevant lines of that here, in the interests of natural justice and also to lay Mr. Barve's ghosts to rest. The relevant lines from Samir's mail reads thus: Hi Sandeep, You are absolutely right about your post on Goanet. We will not obstruct Shravan in anyway. Shravan is a quiet kid with no hang-ups I wish him all the success in chess and in life. The above lines should make things quite clear. If there is anybody who is jeopardizing Barve's son's interests, it is Mr. Barve himself by needlessly dragging him into his personal issues, disregarding the sincere advice I gave him the last time round. At least now, one hopes that Barve will keep his son out of his personal self-destructing battles. Cheers Sandeep

Re: [Goanet] Christian Institutions to be closed all over Goa on 29th Aug - Orissa Protests
Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 03:33:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Carvalho [EMAIL PROTECTED] I take no joy in this only the sad realization that Christians and Muslims today in India are facing the same harsh reality Jews faced in Nazi Germany. We are considered non-Indians and second-class citizens in our own country. Mario responds: I agree that these recent atrocities and the thinking behind them need to be protested and stopped in their tracks and the masterminds and their henchmen brought to justice, but let's not get carried away here. The old and tired Nazi shibboleth is extravagant hyperbole when applied here, and the second-class citizen allegation doesn't fit either. There are still enough checks and balances in the Indian political system and its judiciary to protect most minorities, even in the midst of all the chaos and corruption and intolerance in very narrow and specific areas of Indian society. After all Indians have spent thousands of years devising ingenious ways in which to divide themselves and discriminate against each other. However, there are over 800 million Hindus in India, and these atrocities, I daresay, cannot even be blamed on most BJP members, but on radical Hindu-supremacist cells within the BJP and some other organizations like the Shiv Sena. Let's not forget that the BJP and the Shiv Sena can and have been defeated at the ballot box, even at the height of the BJP's vaunted and ostentatious India Shining national campaign, and most of those who voted against them were Hindus.

Mario observes: Hey, Gabriel, where have you been, man? Haven't heard from you in awhile. I guess you felt the need to wake up and day-dream about what the Portuguese coulda, woulda, shoulda done. Unfortunately, not to disturb your reverie or anything, the fact remains that they did not. Sorry! Gabriel wrote: What the Portuguese gave Goans. There's more to life than electricity, running water, phones, colleges, universities, banks. Basic education - by this I don't mean literacy, but efforts to get everyone to live decently. Mario responds: Hey, Gabriel, how does one live decently in this day and age without electricity, running water, phones, colleges, universities, banks? Did you forgot roads and bridges and FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY? I notice you did not migrate to pristine Mozambique or Angola, but to a civilized country like Australia where they have plenty of electricity, running water, phones, colleges, universities, banks, not to mention roads and bridges, freedom and democracy. Gabriel wrote: Finally, what the Portuguese also gave Goans, which the Brits did not give the Indians, was full citizenship of their country. Mario observes: Why would anyone in India want to be a citizen of what was then a third rate European country? Gabriel wrote: If I remember correctly, there was an element of free enterprise, which enabled people like Salgaoncars, Dempos, Timblos, Menezes et al to rise high in their business ventures without interference from paper-pushers or red-tape. Mario observes: Element is right. You used a good word in element. If I remember correctly the only difference back then was that the paper pushers were white Portuguese or brown Portuguese. Now, instead of an element of free enterprise, Goa has too much free enterprise, based on the squeals we hear on Goanet every day from the anti-Ghanti crowd:-)) Gabriel wrote: Ration cards were unheard of before 1964. Mario observes: So were elections and the rights of free speech and assembly. Gabriel wrote: Note that Goa got a reasonable good 'phone service only after CHOGM, for obvious reasons, not necessarily to give Goans a good service, but like China of the Olympics, to show what the Indian Govt could do, I suppose, for the occasion. Mario observes: Note that the phone service under the Portuguese was a joke and virtually non-existent. Gabriel wrote: I have tried to put into perspective what many people have not realized. But the fact that India was not prepared to increase funding for development was because Goa was already developed. Mario observes: What you have done, Gabriel, is to describe the tired old pro-colonial perspective, where mostly the Christians in Goa were the favored group but still under the thumbs of their white colonial masters. But, as you had to concede above, theey coulda, woulda, shoulda, but did not give Goa electricity, running water, phones, colleges, universities, banks, not to mention roads and bridges, freedom and democracy.
