Re: [Goanet] Alternatives to Mining: HERALD(Goa), May 8, 2009

2009-05-09 Thread sheela jaywant
sending a middle i once wrote, kind of related to article below.

Different Minescapes

The black, sooty, dreary landscape looked like something from another planet.
Hundreds of trucks, endlessly raced and swayed over and across the muddy, curvy
roads, up and down the slopes. Giant cranes cruelly devoured the mud, causing
crates, landslides, in an organized way. It's difficult to believe that this
area
from where the state's big money came, lay on the fringe of one of India's
greenest
states, Goa. My request to visit a mine had been met with a perplexed Why? I
had
no answer except that I was curious.

The pebbly earth that the cranes crunched was raised to a height, sieved
through
rattling, shaking, graded meshes. The enormous imported machines that yanked
the
transport belts looked, sounded and were a decade old. The men (no womenfolk
here)
paced leisurely up and down the line, monitoring the activity. The loaders on
the
trucks led a more hectic life. Had their supervisors carried whips, they might
have
resembled the Egyptians who built the pyramids. Not a thing pretty here. Not a
bird,
flower, no colour, no peace.

The black, sooty ore, washed and graded, stored piled, open to the sky, was
transported later by road to the closest quay from where it would be ferried to
the
main port. Thence to worldwide destinations.

I expected the same ugliness when I went down a salt mine in Poland. What a
contrast. At 135 metres, the deepest mine in the world gave me one of the most
memorable experiences of my life. From Crakow to Wieliczka, the drive was
smooth,
with flat green fields on either side. Once the tickets were bought and we
entered
the cool (13 deg C) blackness, the stern guide took over. The crystalline
walls, the
floor, were gleaming, solid sodium chloride. Our guide explained how things had
evolved over 400 years.

There were full-sized statues of saints and kings carved out of the 'rock'. The
humidity in our breaths could dissolve them, so we kept our distance. Seeping
and
dripping water could form streams that would dissolve an entire mine, and cause
deaths: channels were made for the safety of the workers. Once horses were
lowered
into the shafts to work the wheels and levers, so large was the subterranean
maze.
Deeper, was a big cathedral with chandeliers whose crystals, too, were made of
salt.
On the walls were carved figurines, scenes from the Bible. The floor was made
to
give the appearance of tiles. Still in use, these mines have a museum, a
cafetaria,
even a post-office.

We can't look after the Taj, leave aside converting a mine into a tourist
attraction.

Just like a lonely hungry dog goes after man holding food, such women becomes

SNAKEBITE? Follow this treatment plan:

a. Reassure the patient.
b. If the bite is on the hand or the arm, put the arm in a triangular
sling and get hospital treatment urgently
c. If the bite is on the leg, put it in a splint to immobilise the
bite. Again, get hospital treatment urgently.
d. The patient should be encouraged to keep still and move as little
as possible.
e. Treat a venomous snakebite with ASV or Anti-Snake Venom (also
called antivenom or antivenin) at a doctor's clinic or in hospital.
Care should be taken to ensure that the patient is not allergic to
antivenom. 20% of all people who are given ASV treatment develop some
kind of allergic reaction.

Do not:

a.. Wash the wound; the act of washing leads to moving the venom
around the body.
b.. Cut or burn the wound.
c. Attempt to suck the venom out of the wound.
d.. Apply a tourniquet or pressure bandage (the only time a pressure
bandage should be considered is if the snake concerned is definitely,
100% a Krait and the journey to hospital is going to take several
hours. If the journey is only going to take up to a couple of hours
the same treatment should be given as that for any other venomous
bite)
e.. Give anything by mouth except in the case of dehydration.
f.. Self-administer antivenom. This is particularly dangerous without
the ability to cope with any allergic reaction, which has the
potential to kill far quicker than any snake

Serial Killer so far confessed killing 7 ( 8 according to GT)

for updates
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextras/3511375836/

Accused Mohanand Naik was first arrested on 21st April 2009 in
connection with a Rape Case. During interrogations he confessed
killings. The accused 40, Rickshaw Driver, allegedly commited FIRST
murder when he was about 24 (1994).

Main Motive: Greed for Gold Ornaments and money.
Mode of killings: Strangulation using the victim's dupata.

Mohanand is married with 18 months old child. He seems very quite and
many find hard to believe in his alleged crimes. All the murdered
victims are young females

In 1995, Mohanand was first arrested in kidnapping case but the Police
let him off without proper investigation. Now, he admits not only kidnapping
but killing the girl too.

Murder confessions (as per the Goa Police) as follows:

2 as on 25/04/09 Miss Darshan Naik 22 amp; Miss Yogita Naik 30
 1 as on 03/05/09 Miss Vasanti Gaude19
1 as on 06/05/09 Miss Kesar Naik 33

Total: 7+1 = 8 as on 8/5/09

it could be even more (up to 10?)
However, Police are investigating for possible links to 18 (now 15) missing
girls during the period.

Some Questions:
How come he got away each time?

Why his wife never question the source of income?
The Accused Mohanand was a part time Rickshaw driver
(besides house, it was said they own 2-3 flats, wife works for Ela farm?
Recently, the accused told his wife to leave her Job and that he will
look after her and their baby)

Who is the goldsmith whom he was selling the stollen gold to?

[Goanet] Why can't Goa think beyond mining?

2009-05-09 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Samir,

That was a very interesting and thought provoking article. May I add some of
my own thoughts to your thought process?

1. Tourism: This is Goa’s usp. We do not need Five Star hotels which
guzzle water, employ few locals, provide low-end jobs to locals( like cooks,
butlers, room boys and housekeeping staff), fence off beaches, etc. Goans
have fairly large houses. We need to encourage goans to set aside a couple
of rooms, upgrade them to international standards with clean toilets and
bath and provide bed and breakfast. This way, it will provide an income to
many families and also bring in development at the village level, improve
standards of living, maintain the houses and preserve the environment. This
is fairly common in European countries like Spain,Germany, Austria and
Switzerland. A directory of all such service providers can be compiled and
maintained by the Tourism dept or made available on websites. Tourists will
also get an opportunity to interact with goan families at a personal level
and learn more about the language and culture of the local people.
Initially, the government may help with low cost loans or one time grants to
help the local population with the upgrading of their homes.

2. Education: Goa possesses excellent qualities to become an
educational hub. Literacy is almost 100%. Goa should encourage or take the
help of the Centre to set up IIM’s/IIT’s, Management institutes, Catering
Colleges, Colleges for Nursing, Engineering Colleges, Medical Colleges,
Polytechnics etc. Automatically, the aspirations of the local youth will be
galvanized once they become aware of the job opportunities they will get if
they get better qualified. This is environment friendly and barring for the
staff, will have a floating population of high caliber individuals. We have
many goans who have excelled in studies and in their professions but reside
outside Goa or overseas. They could be co-opted as visiting faculty.

3. Music: Goans have a natural talent and ear for music. Goa has
produced musicians of note and repute like the Mangeshkars, Amonkars, Remo
and many many others. A School or College for music on the lines of Trinity
College could be opened which would provide employment to hundreds of
talented musicians besides enhancing the art and culture of Goa. A natural
fallout of this would be Goa would attract people of culture rather than
those who come only to exploit its resources.

4. Cottage Industries: Goa is blessed with an abundance of fruits,
flowers, and natural resources. Goans are also excellent cooks. Cottage
industries like jam making, pickle making, soft drink concentrates can be
encouraged.

I hope all this will lead to bigger debates and discussions and bear some
fruits in the near future.

Regards,

Marshall

This is the first time I ever been to this restaurant.

1: The President knows that all of Gilbert’s expansive knowledge comes
from his own discoveries and from truths that have been revealed to
him by Goan grandmothers, old ladies and other higher powers.

2: Therefore, Gilbert has never felt the need to read anything that is
written by others on the internet or in printed books.

3: But now that Gilbert is being considered for the position of the
Chief Librarian of the Pandurang Presidential Library, the President
wants him to know that a library consists of books and papers written
by other people, and it provides access to the world wide web because
the web archives all the latest advances in electronic format.

4: If by any chance, however remote, Gilbert does not know something,
the President wants him to access the internet to read what is written

database and the data provided by professional organizations and
institutes.

[Goanet] Churchill and their maturing Band of Brothers

2009-05-09 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994)

Churchill and their maturing Band of Brothers
Friday, 08. May 2009 - Sujay Sharma
Patron Churchill Alemao of the newly crowned Indian football champions has
definitely thrown the gauntlet to the pretenders to their perch, with the
extension
of contracts for next season too of virtually the whole team that was so
successful
and made history for the family-team from Varca.

Odafe, Mangi, Felix, Kalu, Vashum, Robert, Paite, Naoba: all of these
tremendously
key players have been retained, despite the tough negotiations and attempts by
clubs
from Kolkata and Mumbai to prize them away. Reportedly Odafe has sacrificed 20
lakhs
to stick it out for another season with the champions, than head to the
desperate
success starved record champions East Bengal Club. That is no small sum by any
means, even in this day and age of inflated salaries for top footballers in
India.
Under no illusion can the family-backed Churchill be considered to have the
phenomenal financial and otherwise backing of a Kolkata giant, but they did
their
best to cover their interests in convincing Odafe (for a possibly lower sum
than
alternatives) and the others (for deservedly enhanced packages) to remain.

Maybe it's a good sign about the professionalization of the game that
successful
players are acting more maturely in their ways to ensure better more sustained
success over the entirety of their career. Odafe might have taken into
consideration
the reverence he is held in by his Goan followers, and how well his family is
settled. Kalu and Felix might have taken into consideration their personal
comfort
in playing in a settled environment with their good friend and captain. The
many
improved north-easterners might have taken into consideration their own
development
as footballers from their time of graduation at TFA and other small places,
their
regular opportunities to play day in day out to demonstrate their mettle. The
fact
these youngsters showed the maturity en-masse three years ago to shun the
black-holes of promising talent that are the Kolkata big-two, meant that it was
probably no surprise they were able to weigh up their priorities this time
around
too, when an enticing move could well be one wrong turn too many god forbid an
injury or drop in form under the pressure cooker of expectations happened to
see
them dropped like stones and regress in their careers.

Then there is the small matter of the Asian competition. For footballers of top
quality, pitting themselves against better opposition is in itself a huge
incentive
to excel. It is a kind of positive motivation, where over-par performances are
fulfilling. On the other hand, the Kolkata duo, perennially the subject of
negative
motivation in terms of their fear of failure and looking to somehow establish
themselves in India first, have hardly made a dent in AFC Cups. Meanwhile, the
two
other teams to have taken part with some regularity, Mahindra and Dempo, have
consistently shown themselves to raise the bar of their performances and
results,
when competing in Asia. That is probably what we should expect, unsurprisingly,
from
Churchill too in the upcoming season.

For the Band of Brothers, in staying together, could help to build successfully
on
the strong foundations they themselves have helped to establish.

Re: [Goanet] Information Fr. Vincent Catao

2009-05-09 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक न ोरोन्या
Thanks Marcos, for the post, and my condolences on the death. Heard
this from Fr Cecil in Sawantwadi too.

Because Fr Catao was a strict disciplinarian -- and he came to our
school in Mapusa soon after a series of 'popular' (or lenient,
depending on your point of view) principals -- he was often
misunderstood.

If I recall right, he came sometime in 1977, and the SSC class of that
year just freaked out. They just couldn't cope with his strictness. As
manifested, for example, in a fiat of avoiding any hair covering their
ears (considered very fashionable in those years) or having their
bush-shirts (the term used in Goa) not tucked into their pants!

The year later, 1978, Fr Catao worked on a quality- control
experiment. He falled all but 25 boys, and this select band of
two-dozen-plus-one managed to get 100% results when they sat the board
exams. Yet, it left a bitter taste for many, I guess, going by the
grumbling.

Our batch was used to Fr Catao. As for myself, I understood that
beyond his strict exterior, there was a kind and caring person. One
day, he noticed me limping around school, with my toes all bruised.
Granted leave for three days, he wrote on my calendar, without me
even asking.

A man of few words, I don't recall having any talk with him that
lasted more than two minutes. But perhaps, in those times, we
respected and feared our principals.

In class though, he could make us laugh with a few of his jokes and
pet phrases which we were all used to. This reads better than a
novel, he would chide us, when he wanted to goad us into reading
something. His civics class helped us understand the issues crystal
clear, even if they didn't quite prepare us to cope with the real-life
rough and tumble of the Indian political system! If I recall right, he
taught us English grammar, and was a great fan of that time-tested old
warhorse made of paper called the Wren Martin.

By the time we had to leave school ourselves, I (and some others too,
I guess) had come to respect the man. When we met up at a reunion a
couple of years ago, we took a photo and captioned it 'Fr Catao's
boys'. (Our French teacher, Madame Christine Pereira of Colvale, who
since passed away, is also in the photo. So are Joseph Victoria,
Gabru, Raymond, Reginald, Avinash Misquita). We felt shaped positively
by him in our youth.

Yes, there is place for strictness in our world too! FN

[Goanet] Migrant Control in Goa is Critical

2009-05-09 Thread Arwin Mesquita
I strongly oppose views of critics opposing migrant controls in Goa.

Of course, we know that migrations have taken place for centuries; not only
in Goa but also around the world. But we also should know that today,
despite these migrations, various countries (including Western Nations) and
other Indian States are keen to keep their respective identities
languages. Yes, most other countries and States like Goa, still have outside
migrant inflow into their local populations but please let us appreciate
some key facts (1) Most of these countries and other Indian states have
large populations to withstand current influx of migrants and hence new
migrants will NOT significantly affect their local identities/languages and
in time will also start, in some measure, to integrate into their adopted
countries/states (2) Many Western Nations agreeably need migrants but are
putting more more policies in place, to localize immigrants. Surely
critics will appreciate that Goa is different with respect to its size,
population capacity i.e. the current rapid rate of uncontrolled migrant
influx is too high be integrated into Goa; needless to say the strain it
will put on Goa’s scarce resources and also increased traffic, pollution,
contamination etc.

Today about 40% of Goa’s population is Non-Goan. If un-checked, Goans will
soon go into a minority. So looking at it practically, will it be Non-Goans
being integrated into Goan Identity, Language Culture or will it actually
be the other way around i.e. Goans forced to integrate into the multitude
migrant identities/languages and which will of course mean, the Ultimate of
Goa’s Identity, Culture Language!! If the latter is what the critics want
then, then can they at least have the courage to declare Goa, as India’s
first cosmopolitan state with no distinct local language/identity!!

I am impressed with the churches that JoeGoaUK has been showing us lately.

All of them are freshly painted, well maintained and in excellent
repair. This is in marked contrast to some of the churches in Bombay
or compared to what these churches looked many years ago.

Is this because of selling of church properties thereby generating
funds that will one day be exhausted or is it that parishioners who
are doing well for themselves have been very generous in their support
to have a village church they can be proud of.

Keen to know.
Roland.

I guess this restaurant is about 50 years old.
I also understand it was named after one of the owner’s daughters.
Many Ponnjekar will remember this restaurant. See pic.
It’s near the Geeta Bakery.

We just had simple xit-coddi  (Fish curry Rice). Rs. 30 (see pics)
This is the first time I ever been to this restaurant.
Infact, I only saw it same day although I heard about it some years ago.

[Goanet] G’bye Goa: Asuras/Gawdas - HERALD (Goa), May 10, 2009

2009-05-09 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

G’BYE GOA: ASURAS/GAWDAS
By Valmiki Faleiro

Next to arrive in Goa were the Asuras. They marked a change. While earlier
settlers,
Mhars and Gonvllis, came from South India, Asuras pioneered an influx from
central
India. They came from Chota Nagpur. Originally belonging to North-East India,
some
believe Goa’s Asuras migrated via South India.

Asuras subjugated the older settlers. They tilled land and, by trial and error,
developed
Goa’s marvels called ‘khazans’ (reclaimed mud flats that can also take in tidal
water.)
They planted trees, made utensils of clay and stone, and produced salt.

They pioneered paddy cultivation, sown by villagers in rotation, thus
developing the
village commune, or ‘Ganvkari’ system of collective ownership of village lands.
They
founded the institution of ‘Bara-zan,’ under which a cluster of 12 villages
formed one
administrative unit.

Subjugated by Kols centuries later, Asuras dissipated into diverse occupations.
Some
became potters (‘Kumbhars,’ reckoned to be Goa’s oldest craftsmen), some turned
into
blacksmiths (‘Kamars’), a few took to trading and became Vanis, some continued
to
produce salt (‘Mitt Gawde,’ a term that in later usage covered people from
other castes,
including Brahmins, who owned vast salt pans.) The rest toiled as land
labourers (the
‘Gawdas.’)

There is much confusion between this tribe and the Kols/Kunnbis who followed
them.
Both are of the same racial stock, worship the same gods and bear near identical
customs, but are different social groups. Gawdas will abhor being called
Kunnbis, and
vice versa.

Some believe the difference between Kunnbis and Gawdas lies in their racial
origin –
while Kunnbis are of pure South Indian stock, Gawdas had their bloodlines mixed
with
Indo-Aryans! This was echoed in German anthropologist, Gustav Oppert’s
postulation
that ‘Gawda’ came from ‘Gau’ or ‘Go,’ the cow, which is closely linked to
Indo-Aryan
traditions, as in ’Panchagauda’/‘Gaud’ Saraswat Brahmins. Gawdas, they say, were
cowherds.

The Gawda-Kunnbi confusion gets confounded among Goan Catholics. The Portuguese
began that confusion. Alien to local language and lore, their own inability to
pronounce
much of the local idiom, further limited by the Roman alphabet versus the
versatile
Devanagri, they recorded native words the best way they could. Often, in the
process,
murdering the original word or its nuance. As in “Curumbim/Curumbina” – an
umbrella
word that made Gawdas synonymous with Kunnbis.

Portuguese-speaking locals continued the ‘Curumbim’ tradition. Some believe that
Kunnbi is the Hindu version of the Catholic Gawda. Others think reverse: that a
Gawda,
on conversion to Christianity, became a Kunnbi. In parts of Salcete, Catholic
Gawdas
and Kunnbis are bracketed as ‘Kunnbis’ while Hindu counterparts are called
‘Kokon-
Kunnbis.’

The Gawda-Kunnbi mix-up was also aided by other similarities between them. Like
the
near identical ‘kapod’ (coarse sari) their womenfolk wore, the subtle
difference in colour
and style of draping indiscernible to non-tribal eyes. Like their common chief
deity:
Mallikarjun, adapted from the Dhangar god they captured, Moko/Makhajan.
Festivals of
both were common, but with slight differences in the manner of their
celebration, like the
song-dance ‘Fugddi.’ And ‘Zagor’ (which became ‘Khell’ in the Portuguese era.)

Gawdas consider themselves ‘superior’ to Kunnbis. They exist in large numbers in
Karnataka and Orissa. Their tribe name is often invoked pejoratively in Goa. It
is
honorific elsewhere. One of them, Deve Gowda, was Prime Minister of India.

Indo-Aryan Goans equated the Gawda with a ‘reddo’ (a water buffalo,
unintelligent.)
Salcete Catholics compared Gawdas of one village, Loutulim, to a land-tilling
section of
caste Brahmins of another village, Curtorim. Even if the village nickname
(‘redde’)
belonged to a third, neighbouring village, Chandor!

Like Mhars, Asuras believed in the existence of spirits, via their encompassing
deity,
‘Rouduro’ (absorbed as ‘Rudra’ by Indo-Aryans into their own ‘Trimurti’ in the
Vedas,
changed to ‘Shiva’ in latter-day Upanishads.)

This was Goa’s first community to offer human sacrifice – later toned down to
hanging
men from wooden stakes, with iron hooks pierced into their backs. (More on this
in ‘Kols’
next Sunday.) Animal sacrifice was common, particularly of he-goats and
roosters – like
Kols, in different colours for different divinities! After all, both lived in
and came to Goa
from the same geo location in central India. (ENDS.)

[Goanet] LTTE looking to infiltrate from western coast: Indian Navy

2009-05-09 Thread Alfred de Tavares
LTTE looking to infiltrate from western coast: Indian Navy  Text

Panaji, May 9 (IANS) The Tamil Tigers, fighting for survival against the Sri
Lankan army, may try to infiltrate into India through the western coast, a top
naval officer said here Saturday. Southern naval command's Flag Officer
Commanding-in-Chief Vice Admiral S.K. Damle said: We have to make sure that
our coastal borders are secure and allow no unauthorised elements to come into
our country.

The officer said that tight vigil along the Tamil Nadu coast has forced the
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealem (LTTE) to look for other areas to infiltrate.
He said that there have been reports of movement of LTTE boats off the western
coast.

LTTE is not a question of today. Earlier too we found that the moment the
Indian Navy increased vigil along the Tamil Nadu coast, many unauthorised
persons, including the LTTE, were coming in from the west coast, Damle said.

Damle, who was in Goa to to attend a passing out parade of cadets at INS
Mandovi, also said that there is no cooperation between the Indian and Sri
Lankan navies.

The Sri Lankan navy is acting on their own for their own security and there is
no direct coordination between the southern naval command and the Sri Lankan
navy, Damle told reporters.

Commenting on the slow pace of development vis-a-vis reinforcing the coastal
defence mechanism, Damle said that while state officials were doing their
best, it was still not good enough.

He also advocated better interaction with fishermen and other marine agencies
for increased vigilance on India's coast.

[Goanet] Local / Dalit Christians demand their own bishops

Press Release

Local / Dalit Christians demand their own bishops
Electrd by local people, not by Vatican

Bhopal , May 6, 2009 : Mr. R.L. Francis is the National President of the Dalit
Christians organization known as ‘Poor Christian Liberation Movement’ (PCLM).
On May 2, 2009, in Bhopal, Mr. R.L. Francis along with his companions, Rev. Fr.
William Premdass Chaudhary and Mr. P.B. Lomeo (Editor of the Church
Restoration, Bhopal,  Monthly) toured to the Christians colonies in Bhopal and
listened and discussed local / Dalit Christians’ problems. Mr. Francis says
that the churches are responsible for the pathetic condition for Dalit
Christians in India.

Mr. Francis says that church authorities are spending cores of rupees in order
to spread their kingdom through preaching. There are around two hundred (200)
catholic dioceses, in India, which follow rules and regulation of Vatican and
in the coming of fifty years (50) there will be more dioceses in India. Mr.
Francis says that if Catholic Church spends more money for the development and
enlistment rather than on preaching then the condition of Dalit Christians, who
are wounded sheep of this fold, will improve their condition and they will have
better opportunity in their lives.

Mr. France says that the church authorities have best educational institutions
in India. There are about four to five per cent Christian population in India
but churches have hold on around twenty two per cent (22%) of educational
institutions and thirty per cent (30%) of health care. Next to government, the
churches are the biggest land owners in India. In spite of having enough
facilities with the church yet Dalit Christians’ condition is deteriorating.
There are fifteen per cent (15%) Dalit Christians in the cities and forty per
cent (40%) Dalit Christians in the rural areas are illiterate in spite of
having best convent schools in the church. Thousand of Tribal girls are forced
to do the work as Aaya in the rich families. These girls are coming from Tribal
areas where there are no job opportunities. These girls (Aayas) are physically
molested and mentally tortured.

Churches are not taking enough care of these girls. In Madhya Pradesh (M.P.)
alone, in spite of less Christians population, catholic church have cores of
rupees and enough means to provide better education and job to Dalit
Christians. In Madhya Pradesh the church have more then one hundred and fifty
(150) High schools and half of them are convent schools. In Bhopal alone
catholic church have the property, movable and unmovable, worth of more than
six hundred crores (600) yet Christians’ condition is not improved. The church
property and money are being used by the authorities as they wish.

The members of Poor Christian Liberation Movement, Rev. Fr. William Predass
Chaudhary and Mr. P.B. Lomio explained to the local Christians about Mr, Anand
Benard’s, who is the only member of minority commission of Madhay Pradesh
government, suggestion to the M.P. government to form like a Waqf bord. If the
M. P. government forms such kind of bord then we must welcome the government’s
step and the Christians will have no loss at all. On August 27, 2004, Poor
Christian Liberation Movement had given a memorandum to the Honorable Prime
Minister, Dr. Manmohon Singh to form such kind of committee to control the
properties of churches. Last year June 6, 2008, Poor Christian Liberation
Movement had organized a National Convention at India Islamic Cultural Centre,
87-88 Lodi Road, New Delhi-110003. From all over India there were three hundred
(300) representatives who repeated the demand to form committees to look after
church properties. The National
President of PCLM, Mr. R.L. Frances says that if the Waqf board has no
credibility or the Muslim community bearing any loss then the Muslim community
will not allow such king of board. But they are benefiting from Waqf board. If
such kind of board / committee is formed to safeguard the properties of
churches then Christian community should not oppose it. There may be such kind
of people who may oppose for their own sake. Such kind of people astray the
Christian community from the main issue. The properties and money are being
misused by leaders of churches and rich people The educational institutions are
being run by the upper caste rather than Dalit Christians who are deprived from
all the facilities in the churches. Thus upper caste people are enjoying both
properties and educational facilities.

Poor Christian Liberation Movement regrets about the behavior of church
authorities who are collecting money from national and international level in

[Goanet] Christian strongly condemns interference by the Church in the Lok Sabha election

2009-05-09 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad

I would like to thank Marshall for bringing to my notice the article
entitled Hindu Ayatollahs, the link that you privided being:

http://www.outlookindia.com/fullprint.asp?choice=2fodname=20090427fname=Co
lumn+Neelabh+%28F%29sid=1

To my mind, the operative part of the article is: This is because Advani
has written to over 1,000 religious leaders, most of them Vishwa Hindu
Parishad-affiliated sadhus/sants, earnestly assuring them: It will be
my endeavour (as prime minister) to seek on a regular basis the guidance
of spiritual leaders of all denominations on major challenges and issues
facing the nation. For this, we shall evolve a suitable consultative
mechanism.

Clearly the guidance that Advani is seeking is from spiritual leaders of
ALL denominations, and not just Hindus. In the very nature of the
situation in India, the majority of the spiritual leaders would be
Hindus, and, perhaps, a majority of these would be affiliated with the
VHP in some way or another. If a political leader in the USA, say, had
sent a letter to the spiritual leaders in his country, the majority
would have been Christian. So, I think, the heading of the article is a
mischievous one. I also think that it is deliberate.

However, I think that Advani had no business to send the letter at all.
The spiritual leaders can make their own comments, as they deem fit.
Just as social leaders do. But to form a consultative mechanism is
fraught with danger.

I, however, do not appreciate the comment made by Marshall on R L
Francis whom you identified as follows: (He( is an old disgruntled hand.
He has no credibility and no following. He sole claim to fame is being
propped up by the sangh parivar to embarrass the Church from time to
time.

I think the appropriate comment is: Don't shoot the messenger! The
issue here is whether the points raised by Francis (I really do not know
who he is) are valid or not. I hope Marshall is not saying that because
they are being stated by one who is 'propped by the sangh' they should be
ignored.

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

[Goanet] The New Face of Hinduism

2009-05-09 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
The New Face of Hinduism

Will Mayawati usher in the new face of Hinduism? Will Manu have to
undergo serious surgery after a few millennium - are a couple of questions
we could idle our time with as we wait for the results of the MP elections.
Will the spirit of Dr. Ambedkar be rekindled, in his famous words - I was
born a Hindu but will not die a Hindu - be the way forward for millions of
underdogs of the caste system? If the BJP is the Mother India for the upper
castes, will Mother Mayawati be the hope of Indians of lower castes?
Whatever is your opinion on the subject, Indian society is at the
crossroads, and the caste system which is at the very heart of Hinduism will
have to be discussed at great length, from bottom to the top in the Indian
subcontinent.

Is the idea of caste scientific? You do something bad in your previous life
and you are punished in this life or you do something bad in this life and
you will be punished in the next? Is this scientific? It is said, if you put
your hand in fire you will be burnt instantly. Is this true?
