[Goanet] 117 years on, tiatrs still enthrall & enlighten
117 years on, tiatrs still enthrall & enlighten 11 May 2009, 0352 hrs IST, TNN PANAJI: It's the feast of the Holy Cross at Maina-Socorro in Bardez and the tiatr for the evening, Anthony Sylvester's "Tourist" brings to stage a simple family feud laced with subtle comedy. Sparring brothers living under the same roof refuse to share the electricity bill, for while one uses a water heater, the other heats it over firewood. The audience can't help but acknowledge the reality of the scenes enacted. It is 2009 and tiatrs continue to bring home social messages. "Tiatrs are a powerful and effective medium to reach out, rouse emotions and awaken people," says tiatr veteran Tomazinho Cardozo. This unique form of theatre has come a long way from a medium of simple entertainment to rousing sentiments. It was in the forefront in the fight to prevent Goa's merger with Maharashtra and to make Konkani the state's official language. It's not just politics, but also social themes that find their way into the tiatr's script. Antonio Rosario Fernandes, popularly known as Roseferns has staged dramas around different issues, including the garbage crisis, the CRZ issue and uneducated politicians with criminal antecedents. "Tiatrs give social messages, but the question is how many people retain it? We appreciate the message while inside the auditorium, but tend to forget it once outside," Cardozo said. That, however, doesn't dishearten tiatrists. "We know there will be a few who understand what we're trying to say. It's similar to a priest whose mission is fulfilled if atleast one person changes after listening to his sermon," Roseferns said. But isn't the tiatrist fraternity apprehensive of threats from some who resent particular themes? "We do receive threats, but the tiatr is a powerful medium and we have the backing of the people," says Wilson Mazarello, more popular by his stage name Wilmix'. Wilmix has been in the tiatr business for 40 years and his tiatrs have dwelled on family relationships, women empowerment and contemporary social themes. He is far more optimistic about the audience taking home the message. "If two out of ten people in the audience get the message and put it into practice, our purpose is served," he said. Tiatrs play an important role in Goa. "No Catholic feast is complete without a tiatr being staged in the evening," says Cardozo, who has been associated with the form for half a century now. >From the first ever tiatr in history, "Italian Bhurgo" (The Italian Boy) by Lucasinho Ribeiro staged in Mumbai on April 17, 1892, till today, this form of theatre - several acts entwined with songs backed by a live band, continues to enthrall and enlighten Goan society. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Goa/117-years-on-tiatrs-still-enthrall--enlighten/articleshow/4507193.cms

[Goanet] Watch out for the million dollar SMS!
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM, MAY 10 Have you received an SMS on your mobile informing that you’ve won millions of pounds. Hang on! This might be one of the fake SMS rackets that end up eating through your finances instead. A growing number of people have complained that they have been receiving fake SMSes, which reportedly promised huge amount of money, similar to the case in Bicholim, where a man was duped of Rs 1.7 lakh. However, it is not known as to how many people have received such SMSes and how many have invested into it as no official police complaints have been filed. Under this fake scheme, the recipient receives a SMS informing of a prize ranging between 100,000 and 200,000 pounds. The SMS further asks the recipients to deposit some money into a bank account. Bolesh Naik from Pernem, a media consultant and writer Dinesh Patel, a teacher from Quepem and a journo of an English daily also received similar SMSes. According to reports, on May 7, Dinesh Patel received a similar SMS message. However, he played it safe and replied through the e-mail asking for the entire format, to which the reply was the same sent earlier. The senders name on the inbox of the mobile reads: “your phone No has been awarded 3,000,000 in the ongoing Orange Intl Draws in UK. PIN is 3432. Call Philip on +447031901993 e-mail otdcdraws@ live.com to claim”. A teacher from Quepem also received a message last week. The teacher also preferred to ignore the message. The SMS reads: “Congrats! You have won 300,000 GBP in 2009 (Shell). INT.L Mobile Draw. To claim your prize contact Dr. Franklin on +447010306113 or email spdcd2...@live.com”. A journalist from a leading English daily was also one of the recipient of a similar message. He too preferred to ignore the message. Meanwhile, Bicholim police said that they have got a lead in the case, but refused to divulge further details. It may be recalled Laxman Damle (39) of Kasarpal-Bicholim received an SMS on his mobile phone on April 2, stating that his mobile number had been selected for the prize money worth 100,000 British Pounds (Rs 75 lakh). The SMS had also asked him to reply to claim the money. Excited over the deal, Damle replied to the SMS and was told to deposit money in a bank on an account given by the person. He deposited Rs 15,000, Rs 45,000 and Rs 1.09 lakh in the account as told by an unknown person over the phone.
[Goanet] Indian Elections 2009 - An intellectual challenge to the orientation of the New Indian Government
GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994) Indian Elections 2009 - An intellectual challenge to the orientation of the New Indian Government Jump to Comments The last phase of the voting of India’s fifteenth national elections since its independence in 1947 will be over by 13th May 2009.The final verdict will be out on 16th May 2009. More than 700 million eligible voters will decide the shape and the fate of the outcome of 2009 Indian elections. The moot question is- Is there an obvious favorite to win the election? Predictions are impossible why? Indian politics, once dominated by the Congress Party, is now increasingly dominated by small and regional parties representing regional, sectional, or caste-based interests. These small regional parties concentrate on local issues. The Indian politics has of late been increasingly dominated by the coalitions that many times make it very difficult to move legislation through parliament. Thus the orientation of the Indian government after May 16th elections results would be an unprecedented challenge. Re: [Goanet] Talking Photos: Identify this beautiful Church (with Prev. Answers)
That is correct - Note its sharp profile and the painting, results of renovations carried out recently. Memories of having serverd at Mass there alongside the Faleiro brothers in months of October and May in the 60s. However, early colour scheme (inside the Church) of brown and cream gave way to pink and light cream (ugh!) in late 60's, which seems to have been maintained rather than revert to the older more conservative color scheme. Also the memorial slabs seem to have disappeared. Meant to visit the Church last year on Good Friday, but a torrential downpour at the end of the open-air services put an end to that wish (and the expected procession). Very true! We usually encourage callers to keep someone watching the movements of the snake so that they can guide volunteers where to look, when they arrive. That is also a reason why, in Saligao, we aim to train as many volunteers as possible. The response time to a snake call has to be as quick as possible...both for the sake of the snake and the callers! Till recently, volunteers had to ride in from Mapusa to attend to a Saligao snake call. More volunteers from each village would help immensely. [Goanet] Sing a Song - Monday-muse (11 May’09 )
MONDAY MUSE (11 May 2009) SING A SONG My friend, Nirmesh Tyagi had a childhood dream to be a singer. Since his family was connected with the Hindi film fraternity, his talent was noticed early. However, offers to get him trained were let by. Years later, Nirmesh is discovering his happiness by singing at family occasions and opportunities at events of the JCI organisation, to which we both belong. It is interesting to note what Nirmesh does to be better at singing. He buys karaoke music and sings to the tune at home, his car and whenever and wherever he can. All this singing not only makes him better as a singer… it maintains him in a happy, proactive mood. And that is an important learning! There is an artist, a singer, a dancer, a story teller in all of us. But quite often our potential is unfairly condemned under our own expectation of its worthiness before an audience. It is foolish to compare ourselves with professionals. More importantly, the best of singers get better not by comparing themselves with the singing greats. Rather they get inspired by their icons to connect to the joy that comes from singing. Joe Raposo said it so well, “Sing out loud, Sing out strong… Sing, Sing a song, Make it simple, To last your whole life long, Don't worry that it's not good enough, For anyone else to hear, Sing, Sing a song.” Singing, painting, writing, et al are personal experiences as well. They give us happiness, satisfaction and more significantly a sense of focus on a positive way of looking at things. Our entire mental make up will be better if and when we sing… with or without karaoke music! After all, audience applaud the singer who externalises his personal connect with the happiness of singing… We would BE BETTER if we would sing… ‘cause singing is such an excellent thing! - Pravin K. Re: [Goanet] Muslim Demographics
It's interesting to see the post-Cold War search for a New Enemy (Islam is unfortunately the prime target) bring Rightwingers and Islamophobes of all kinds onto the same side. In India too, such thinking is not new, and claims have been made -- believe it or not -- that India would become a Muslim country in a certain number of years. The links below are self-explanatory. So is the ideological bias. http://www.sanghparivar.org/forum/when-muslims-will-become-absolute-majority-in-india-india-will-be-declared-islamic-country-if- http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090401042710AAgqpCS Unfortunately, if we go on at it at this rate, this 'Clash of Civilizations' will become a self-fulfilling prophecy, built on mistrust and hate (promoted by those who push such theories). Snopes has an interesting debate on this: http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/demographics.asp ORIGINS: The notion that "Christendom" (primarily western Europe, but also North America) is in danger of being overwhelmed within a few generations by Muslim immigrants with compratively high birth rates (while the natives of the countries they are emigrating to are reproducing at or below mere replacement level) has been a common topic of western press articles in the last several years. However, such articles (and examples like the video linked above) often suffer from flaws that tip them more towards being alarmist rather than accurate and sober analyses. They cherry pick a few gloomy-sounding statistics without presenting them within a larger context, they assume that current demographic trends will remain static even in the face of future political, economic or social changes, and they don't acknowledge that fertility rates are influenced by a number of complex, interrelated and volatile factors. The last point is especially important, as even small changes in fertility rates can have a significant impact on the future size and nature of populations. Or, as Martin Walker noted ina Spring 2009 Wilson Quarterly on the subject, "the detailed work of demographers tends to seep out to the general public in crude form, and sensationalist headlines so become common wisdom." CLOSEQUOTE There is another rationale take on the issue here too: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/2/6500/70482 Not long back, following the Western perspective on the issue, everyone spoke of a "population bomb" in India. Today, we realise that a productive population (if well educated, clothed and fed) is a productive one. Fertility rates don't remain consistently high all the time. They stabilise after a point. South India is already on this path (with states like Kerala and Goa leading). The north with take some time to stabilise. .Barad: I think the appropriate comment is: "Don't shoot the messenger"! The issue here is whether the points raised by Francis (I really do not know who he is) are valid or not. I hope Marshall is not saying that because they are being stated by one who is 'propped by the sangh' they should be ignored. Response: Refer below mail to understand him better. Posted by: "Fr Dominic Emmanuel" mangaloreancathol...@gmail.com Fri May 8, 2009 1:26 am (PDT) This is absolutely right that R. L. Francis keeps honobbing with Murli Manohar Joshi, Balbir Punj and came once to my office with his brohter to bargain with me that if he got more than what he was getting from the RSS, he would stop attacking the Church. His economic condition has grown by leaps and bounds after he took over the "Poor Christian Liberation Movement". He keeps changing his cars and flats. He has no job. His wife works for the government. He is certainly a nuisance value. Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao of New Delhi and I have told him several times to please birng the names and addresses of those Dalits, tribal or poor children who did not get admission in our schools and we will sort out the matter. He has never done it, does not want to do it. For if he does it, his lie will be exposed and he would not be able to go on with his lies. I am sorry to say but he has no conscience and there are one or two disgruntled priests from one or two dioceses, who do not want to put in any work but want to get plump posts and benefits in the name of being dalits who he has managed to rope in. We do not react to him very much because his purpose is to get us excited and react so that he would be in the news. We are just ignoring him. In one of his recent press-releases, he called a few of us, who know about his deeds as Christian Taliban. We ignored him again. But maybe someone needs to expose him. I have told him that I am helping even non-Christian dalit children from the slums of Delhi so please bring any dalit child who is not in school and I would take care of him/her but to no avail. hi cecil, i was expecting to laugh, but the humour was missing. surely you are not serious about what you propose. don't we all have double standards about what we do and who we befriend? should we hate the person or the person's actions/deeds? isn't the times group guilty of also selling goa through property fairs in delhi, and didn't a famous designer announce a public boycott? don't we know fellow writers who are promoting sale of houses in moira, aldonato non-goans? rude public behaviour is not amusing. casting aspersions is also not. i'm sure we can use legal, civilised, debating forums to fight like ladies and gentlemen, rather than socially ostracise and threaten people to break friendships with complaints to their bosses? perhaps we can use humour? i do not condone the deeds of those you target. i myself have written to the governor of goa against the cidade legislation act, but that does not mean i hate the timblo's, their staff, and their friends. least of all, i hope we don't emulate raj thackeray's actions. cheers! caje > Date: Fri, 8 May 2009 20:10:43 +0800 > Subject: Wendell confronts Sujay, and sends him packing! > From: cecilpi...@gmail.com > To: goa...@goanet.org > > Eyewitness reports are coming in from various sources about an > incident that occurred last night at the Times of India First > Anniversary party at the Hotel Mariott. Marshall, Fr Catao had the pink and grey card thingy in Britto's too! I also recall the contempt he had for classes which promised "sure success" to those who were failing in their SSC through private coaching. Maybe not without reason. In those times, priests tended to be much more strict (or, authoritarian, depending on the way one sees it). It was not a bad thing. We learnt quite a few lessons from it, and I too believe that children need a certain amount of discipline while growing up. Some comments on the late Fr Catao: Benedict 'Benny' Faria in AN AFRICANDER IN THE MAPUSA OF THE 'SEVENTIES: Fr. Vincent Gomes Catao with stories of Poona, Fr Theo D'Souza with his candid philosophy and incisive accounts of historic Goa, and Fr. Ronnie with racy tales from his time in New York. These evening were special for me, a glimpse through an open window to the wider exciting, developing and controversial world. Reginaldo Ricardo de Sousa in English, with a Portuguese flavour. And Hindi, which was like Chinese: School barely started in June 1976 and there came a big change. Fr. Theo was to be transferred and Fr. Catao was to take over the reigns. The ruler, a disciplinarian, a dictator with no mercy; that's how he was known. His reputation preceded him. And Fr. Catao seemed to work hard to spread this reputation further. Fr. Catao's entrance caused my shoulders to slump, and reduced me to a mere lamb awaiting the slaughter. Matters became worse when the first unit tests answer papers of English and Hindi shocked Fr. Patrick Lobo and Sir Ashok. What kept me going were the results of other academic subjects, including those of the French language, for which ability I was later called "Frenchman" By Fr. Catao's rules, rightly one might add in hindsight, tuition was considered a prelude to students playing foul in class. Their support to regain was lost in class would always be found in the tutor after school hours. Hence, tuitions was never granted unless preceded by a written permission from the Principal. I carried on my pursuit to strive higher. The whole year through Std VIII proved to be a real kind of commando training ground for me. By this time, I had also bought in to Fr. Catao's ideology of perseverance, and had inculcated in myself a sense of discipline, ready to face the transition from Std IX to X Today, many years down the line, I can say that my character and success in life can be proudly credited to the belief and values I gained in St. Britto High School and to the man called Fr. Vincent Gomes Catao, my all-time role-model for discipline and motivation Jose Da Gama Pais in FROM A SCHOOL ON A HILL, TO A COLLEGE ON A HILLTOP: I have an unusual remembrance of Phantom (our teacher, John D'Mello) and Gerard Machado, one of the brightest boys in the class whose current career shows for it. Gerard just stood up unexpectedly, and told Phantom that he was teaching rubbish. Phantom responded by telling him to get out of his class. Henceforth, Gerard would walk out of the class every-time Phantom entered; only to be caught by Fr. Catao and be questioned and sent back. Some guts! I was trembling on the day Fr. Catao brought him back to the class. Imagine Gerard telling Fr. Catao that Phantom was teaching rubbish in front of the whole class!... We came out from Britto's in times of transition. Our Class of 1977 had just seen the real Fr. Vincent Gomes Catao, who took over as principal as we were close to leaving the school. Suddenly, our Std IX and Std X classes were divided in two distinct divisions. One of 25 boys and other of the rest. This struck me as something I find hard to digest till this date. One batch was coached extra. We were clearly differentiated as the "bright guys", something which could have perhaps been avoided at the age of 15. But what say did we have? Anyway, Fr Catao eventually managed to get 100 percent results for the 1979 batch. Talking Photos: Welcome to 'Ille de Capão' or Vaxim 'Feast of St. Crist' Ille de Capão Believe me or not! I thought Vanxim is somewhere near Arambol. I only found out on the net that it is near Divar islands. As you know, I like to travell/visit every corner of inhabited Goa but the coverage that I have acheived so far, I think, is not even 50% Goa so small on the Map yet I think I will never be able to explore Goa fully during my life time. = Feast of St. Crist (Saint Christ?) at Vanxim, Goa. Vanxim (Also, Ille de Capao) is an Island near Divar. Vanxim is a small island may be the smallest with about 95 Catholics but on the feast day mass there were about 175 In order to reach there, one has to take two ferries. >From Vanxim Ferry, it’s about 15 minutes walk to the church/centre. No public transport available to Vanxim. Motor cycle Pilot would charge Rs.100 o/w from Old-Goa Ghandhi Circle to Vanxim. >From Divar (north) to Vanxim there is a ferry service every 30 minutes. [Goanet] Fr. Vincent Catao
Fr Catao was my teacher and Vice- Principal at St Vincent's High School, Poona. I remember him as a man of very few words but a strict disciplinarian. During a brief period when he stood in for the Principal who was away, he practically exhausted his supply of 'pink cards' and 'grey cards'. However, behind his stern exterior, Fr Catao hid a very tender heart. He was kind, considerate and empathised with the problems of poor students. One could unburden one's problems to him and come back feeling light and relieved. He had very aristocratic features and gait. Once one came to know him more deeply, one found in him a trustworthy friend. I will always miss my old teachers, for whom teaching was a vocation and not a job. Farewell Fr Catao. We will all meet again one day. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Fr Catao. May his soul rest in peace. Regards, Marshall
[Goanet] Shrikant Barwe Used 108
Dears List member Shrikant Barwe had a tryst with death last night as he and his brother Sanjay met with an accident at Mulgao, Bicholim night at 9.45 pm whilst travelling on their motorcycle. Fortunately it was not that bad in the sense that the Government ambulance service that can be summoned on the number 108 was called, came and took them to G.M.C. I did not pester him for the details apart from learning that Sanjay had a fracture and was immediately operated upon yesterday night at GMC. and that Shrikant had minor injuries. No doubt Shrikant will give us his personal opinion of what the emergency medical services in Goa are like after he has had enough time to rest. ;-) Here's wishing both the Barwes a speedy recovery Augusto Augusto Pinto 40, Novo Portugal, Moira, Bardez, Goa, India E pinto...@gmail.com or ypinto...@yahoo.co.in P 0832-2470336 M 9881126350

[Goanet] Happy Mother's Day
The Mother Up on the tree On a cosy little branch A warm nest is being built. The mother is tired Yet ,she travels afar To get the strongest of twigs That will brave the winds. Patiently, she intertwines them She toils, she sweats. Making the perfect nest for her newborn. She may go hungry to feed it. She listens to every little cry. The communication is heavenly She can understand every seen emotion And can decipher the unseen, the untold. The newborn begins to grow. And she teaches it the truths of life. They rejoice together in sunshine. And she comforts her in the storms. The newborn is now ready to fly. She kisses her goodbye. A wonderful mother has she been. Without any expectations. Pure love , unconditional. Truly profound and sublime. Happy Mother’s day to all the beautiful mothers sharing their love and making this world so beautiful. .Dr Samir Heble 10/5/2009
[Goanet] Snake volunteers
Some snakes are so quick that before the volunteers arrive they would have escaped. My British friends living nearby that 2 cats swallowed by a python (who they had seen in their yard) and one dog killed by a snake - probably a cobra. They were devastated and although they are wildlife enthusiasts and know how to handle snakes, the cobra was much too quick for them and escaped before the volunteers arrived. Re: [Goanet] Information " Fr. Vincent Catao"
From the archives of St Britto’s old boys’ network: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brittos/message/611 Fr Catao, in white, spotless and well tailored cassock walks in, carrying a Civics text book and a chalk. His walk is quick, full of life and carries himself straight as a pole. He complains about his back ache, but the pain does not hinder his energetic movement, jovial attitude and spirit of teaching. The class wishes him and he makes eye contact with me for a brief moment, smiles and reads from the Civics book. His illumination of relevant issues is remarkable and he mixes it with change of tone in concert with comical facial expressions and body postures. All the students take pleasure in his light hearted style of teaching. I am always attentive and at my best behavior when the principal is taking a class; it’s unwise not to. Today is a very good day. I am in high spirits, eagerly waiting for the school day to come to an end. I am doubly happy; it’s Saturday and beginning of Carnaval season. Three days of unlimited fun, holidays and mischief. In my mind, I have a detail plan of spending these fun filled days. I have gone over it countless time and almost perfected it. First, as usual, like all the past years, I will go for the Sunday morning mass at Mapusa Swiss chapel. The sight of devils standing near the chapel, the king Momo parade, stalls selling face masks, water pistols and Carnaval head gears creates the right mood for revelry. After the mass I plan to buy the customary carnival masks, hats and water pistols. Also, I’ll be going to Panjim for the carnival floats, and in the evenings serenading with the village boys and girls. My fancy costume is ready except for few minor alterations. I was lost in my thoughts for a brief moment when … Fr Catao abruptly stops reading from the text book, looks at me and tells the class. “Avelino will be sick on Monday and Tuesday. I am not joking. What about you Avelino?” At first, I was a bit confused about this sudden change of topic and more baffled to hear my name. Then it hit me. All the past years I did not attend school during the Carnaval festivities. My God, I thought to myself. He knows all about me and all my pretensions of being sick during the carnival season. My heart skipped a bit, I was shocked and sweating and I felt my mouth dry. I looked at him and without realizing I blurted “Yes Father”. He smiled and without saying anything continued teaching. Few boys, my close friends, understood what was said and why. I found myself enjoying all the three days, fully engrossed in the festivities, without even worrying about the consequences. Wednesday morning I was in the principal’s office with my school calendar, not feeling right for my actions, waiting for the sky to fall. The reason for not attending school was simply put as sick. Fr Catao looked at me, shook his head knowingly, smiled again and signed without saying a word. Well, I thought that’s kind of cool, but, I had some kind of niggling feeling which was difficult to understand and stayed with me for a long time.
