PANAJI: Goa re-elected both its sitting MPs with the Congress and the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning one each of the two Lok Sabha seats in

the state.

The common characteristic in the victories of both the candidates -
Shripad Naik (BJP) and Francisco Sardinha (Congress) - were their
massively depleted margins as compared to their last wins.

Naik won the North Goa seat with a margin of 6,471 votes, a startling
drop from the massive margin of nearly 58,000 votes in the 2004
elections. Sardinha, who was elected to parliament from South Goa during
the 2007 by-poll, has retained his seat with a lead of 12,516, a far cry
from his earlier margin of 40,902 votes.

While Naik's rival Jitendra Deshprabhu (NCP) has already conceded
defeat, a technical snag in one electronic voting machine (EVM), which
has 462 votes clocked in, has kept the Election Commission from
officially declaring the results of the North Goa constituency.

Naik polled 131,775 votes and Deshprabhu got 125,304. The detailed
break-up of votes polled as per assembly segments will be available only
by evening, election officials said.

Speaking to reporters, Deshprabhu said the contest with Naik was a
healthy contest. It was a good fight. I am grateful for all the
Congress workers and leaders who supported me. I will introspect and see
where I went wrong.

Chief minister Digambar Kamat described the Congress victory in South
Goa as a victory of Congress party policies.

Hello George,
What you say is true Fish and other foods have become expensive. Our own NRIs
are a cause as well. They just pay whatever the Fish seller asks because they
can afford it whereas the local goan may not afford it.No doubt tourism has
brought some level of prosperity to some sectors butr along wiuth it has come
associated evil such as paedophilia, Aids and STDs as well. The unfortunate
problem is that the govt officials are all not committed to the state but to
themselves and are busy filling their pockets as fast as possible.Even at the
Sarpanch level this is true.Unless we get a young bunch who are well educated
entrepreneurs at govt level with a commitment to make GFoa a proud state that
it once was and still is, we will have to bear with all the momsense that goes
on around us.

Hi Godfrey

So far there has been no will shown by the powers-that-be to make Goa a safe
place for tourists or to vigorously pursue justice (Scarlet).  It is true that
a decline in tourism will affect livelihoods but on the other side locals will
benefit. Fish and other foods will be less expensive for locals if tourism
declines. Currently, a pomfret can be around Rs 150/- at the Siolim tar if
available. How many locals can afford this?

It is a livelihood versus lives connection. Even if livelihoods related to
tourism will be impacted, the benefit of saving domestic and foreign tourist
lives by not coming to Goa is a benefit. Not to mention the adverse impact on
the ecology/environment and rampant illegal construction created to support the
influx of tourists, some of whom stay on and the migrant labor which supports
the influx.

I think tourism to Goa needs to discouraged for a number of reasons stated
above, until a sustainable development plan can be implemented. Right now, it
seems the worst of every aspect is allowed and the local Goan is made to
suffer. Why should local Goans suffer because of tourism and the tourist be at
risk of crime at the same time.

GOACAN organises LPG Consumer Rights
Awareness Action in Margao
--
The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN)
as part of its ongoing LPG Consumer Rights Fortnight held an
awareness action at Margao with the participation of consumer
forum volunteers from South Goa.

Displaying banners and distributing information slips to the
consumers the Forum volunteers emphasised the importance of
the LPG consumers reading their rights and writing their complaints.
The volunteers briefed the LPG consumers that they are entitled to
get home delivery of the gas cylinders for Rs. 334.52 inclusive of
transport charges for the first 5 kms. They were also informed that
transport charges of Rs.1/- per km could be collected from the
consumer only if the delivery of the cylinder is beyond 5kms as per
the guidelines of the Directorate of Civil Supplies Consumer Affairs.

Many consumers were unaware that such a facility is the right of
consumer and agreed to book for the refill of the cylinder with the
concerned LPG dealer instead of waiting on the road with the
empty cylinder.

LPG Consumers were also pleased to know that when they book
a home delivery for a refill, a computerised bill is issued giving the
name address of the consumer which is delivered alongwith
the cylinder.

Some consumers were critical of the Central Govt. for fixing the price
of the Cylinder at Rs.334.52 as this resulted in them paying Rs.335/-
which meant 48 paise extra per cylinder refill. This might seem a small
amount but considering that there are a near three lakh LPG consumers
in Goa the outflow from the consumers is almost Rs.1,50,000 per month.

The volunteers also briefed the consumers that since the domestic LPG
cylinders supplied in Goa contains 14.2 Kgs, the cylinder weight can be
checked by the consumer at the residence at the time of delivery as
every transporting vehicle is provided with a mobile scale by the
Petroleum Companies.

Majority of the consumers were unaware of the importance of the
bi-annual mandatory safety check of equipment that needs to be done
at the residence of the consumer on payment of Rs. 40/- only by the
authorised mechanic of the Petroleum Company. The Forum volunteers
further informed that such a safety check ensures the validity of the
insurance cover provided to the consumer by the Petroleum Company
and consumers must be alert to stop unauthorised persons from
conducting such checks and duping the consumers.

The Forum Volunteers also provided consumers with safety literature
prepared by HP Gas Bharat Gas and impressed upon them the
importance of using only Suraksha LPG Hoses at their residences.

Meanwhile GOACAN has appealed to LPG Consumers to write their
complaints if any in the authorised complaint book of the Petroleum
Companies provided at every dealers showroom and send copies of
the same by post to GOACAN Complaints Cell, Post Box 187,

We called it 'Belgaumche Ambe'
Whereas some call it Bombil or bombe or Bomboimche ambe

These mangoes usually arrive in Goa mid May and available through out the
monsoon June/July/Aug

Also, seen this variety grown in Goa too
When kids, we remember stoning/stealing these raw mangoes from a bhatkar
compound. Raw mangoes taste sweet (not too much sour like any other raw
mangoes). We often said it is like 'Katlecho' (Coconut).

Any one?

[Goanet] Mumbai's tiffin-technology heads for the New World

2009-05-16 Thread Mario Goveia

A PIECE OF INDIA IN USA AND CANADA!

It's tiffin time!

On the heads and bicycle racks of an army of delivery men, more than 200,000
shiny tiffin boxes course like quicksilver through the grotty streets of Mumbai
each day.

Like clockwork, these stackable metal pots arrive at the desks of the city's
hungry office workers at 12:45 pm precisely. Considered the world's most
ingenious meal distribution system - a recent Forbes magazine survey found that
only one in six million deliveries is misplaced - the century-old tiffin lunch
delivery network is integral to the cultural life of Mumbai.

And now, from Boston to Burnaby and from Calgary to Cambridge, the tiffin is
taking off across North America, with Metro Vancouver leading the way. On
Granville Island, Curry 2 U proprietor Shaffeen Jamal says the tiffin trend is
going gangbusters.

When I first started I was maybe doing 50 a week, he says. Now I'm doing
1,250.

At the popular South India restaurant Chutney Villa on Broadway at
Main,Vancouver restaurateur Chindi Varadarajulu says she's just ordered in
another shipment of tiffin carriers to keep up with demand. You're sick of the
finger food, you're sick of the pizzas and the sandwiches, this is a healthy -
and tasty - option, says Varadarajulu, who now offers lunchtime delivery and
corporate catering a la tiffin. A lot of customers will buy a tiffin for their
leftovers. Others will come in just to buy the empty containers, she adds.
I've had to order another 250 from India .. they're so popular.

In Calgary, Aly Ramji has named his restaurant after the cylindrical aluminum
containers. Tiffin Curry and Roti House has just doubled its presence in the
city on the strength of its lunchtime Tiffin Club, with a food court outlet at
Mount Royal College expanding on the original restaurant on 28 Street SE.
It's picked up incredibly, says Ramji, originally from Vancouver . Our
tiffins are pretty unique too, they come in a thermos container - being from
Calgary , the winters are cold here and we want your food to be hot!

The tiffin is a remarkably simple concept. Originating with the British Raj in
19th Century India - the word 'tiffing' in antique English means to eat between
meals - the tiffin typically comprises three or four separate hot and cold
insulated compartments.

In India , they are also called dabbas, and are delivered every lunch hour by
some 5,000 dabbawallahs (literally, box carriers) in Mumbai alone. Typically,
they contain rice in one compartment, Dal or curry in another and other items
in the third or fourth tiers such as naan, vegetables or a dessert.

Just this month, the tiffin arrived in the U.S., with a leading restaurant
chain specializing in Indian cuisine launching 'Tiffin Meals,' a new home and
office meal delivery service in Boston and Cambridge . With a click of a mouse,
patrons now can order quality, home-style Indian food every day for lunch, the
Boston based One World Cuisine restaurant chain said while launching the
service patterned on Mumbai's dabbawallah carriers. The launch of Tiffin Meals
allows us to better serve our customers, whether in our restaurants, their
homes or their offices, said Amrik Pabla, president of the One World Cuisine
group. But unlike his counterparts in Metro Vancouver, who refill their
customers cleaned tiffins at a considerable discount, Pabla serves up his
Indian food in disposable, microwavable plastic containers. Varadarajulu firmly
believes that it is the green factor of the reusable aluminum tiffin carriers
that will firmly entrench the tiffin trend
 here.

The biggest reason it will take off is the environmental reason, especially in
Vancouver , she says. We recently catered to a group of 75 at a government
office. Can you imagine, if they weren't ordering the tiffins, these people
would have had three plastic containers each - that's a lot of plastic.

Both Ramji and Jamal concur. We draw a lot of people who want to be
environmentally friendly and are aware of the waste that's involved in plastic
lunch containers, says Ramji, who has a degree in environmental sciences and
has always been conscious of the problems we're facing.
Adds Jamal: I used to put 100,000 foam plates into the landfill every year.
Now, I've put in a dishwasher that cost me 3,000 bucks and that is it. The
idea is I want you to think green, be more responsible, and also buy your
loyalty by asking you to come back to refill your tiffin.
Varadarajulu says she is not surprised the time-honoured tiffin is making a
mighty comeback. India is the cool thing, she explains. People are looking
to India for the next thing, whether it's movies, travel, music, spirituality,
or food...

[Goanet] NEWS: Cumbharjua EVM snag, but BJP's Sripad Naik has clear victory margin (Dajiworld)

Panaji: North Goa Lok Sabha Result on Hold

*/By Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji/*

*Panaji, May 16:* The results for the North Goa (Panaji) Lok Sabha seat
were kept on hold after one of the electronic voting machine (EVM)
developed a technical snag.

Election officials stated that EVM from Cumbharjua constituency with 462
votes developed technical problem during the counting.

But the results available so far as given clear victory to BJP candidate
Sripad Naik against his nearest rival Jitendra Deshprabhu of NCP.

Naik is leading with a margin of 5893 votes in the constituency.

The sitting MP and former union civil aviation minister for state Sripad
Naik would get the hatrick from the constituency, once he is declared
elected, officially.

NCP, which fought the election in alliance with Congress, could not make
much dent despite the firm support of leaders like Vishwajeet Rane, who
had assured whopping margin in the five assembly constituencies.

BJP managed to get retain its traditional bastions of Mandrem, Bicholim,
Mapusa, Siolim, Saligao, Porvorim and Panaji.

Deshprabhu, congressman-turned-NCP candidate, polled fair in the
assembly constituencies of Pernem, Poriem, Thivim, Aldona and Calangute,
which are traditionally Congress-NCP bastions.

Accepting the defeat even before official announcement, Deshprabhu said
that it was a close fight. “I am thankful to all the voters who
supported me. All the congress-NCP leaders worked for me but somehow I
could not sail through,” he added.

BJP’s Sripad Naik said that he managed to get the victory beating the
anti incumbency factor, which always rules in the elections.

“This is historic victory especially because it’s a hatrick for me,” he
said thanking his voters.

Chief minister Digambar Kamat described the Congress victory in South

PANAJI: Early trends in Goa Saturday indicated that the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) was leading in both Lok Sabha constituencies of the state,

bringing some cheer to the party that was on a downturn, as indicated by
national voting trends.

While BJP's former union minister of state for finance and sitting MP
Shripad Naik led from the North Goa seat by 9,775 votes from his nearest
Nationalist Congress
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/PoliticsNation/BJP-leading-in-both-seats-in-Goa/articleshow/4538408.cms#
Party (NCP) rival Jitendra Deshprabhu, the party's Narendra Savoikar was
leading in the South Goa seat - which used to be a predominant Congress
stronghold - with a slender margin of 800 votes ahead of his Congress
rival Francisco Sardinha, at the end of three rounds of counting.

While the BJP polled 36,556 votes in North Goa, the NCP - which is
contesting in Goa in alliance with the Congress - has polled 26,781
votes in the same constituency.

The usual political fanfare around the counting centres located in
Panaji and Margao is missing this time round in view of instructions
from the Election Commission of India which has directed strict security
arrangements.

[NOTE: Results have since been announced, BJP in North Goa and Congress
in South.]

*S Goa: parties edgy*

*HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, MAY 15*

Internal ‘sabotage” by some party leaders has come to haunt the Congress
in its traditional bastion in South Goa Lok constituency, with just less
than 24 hours to go for counting of votes. While the BJP apparently is
keeping its fiingers crossed, unsure about the extent of the so called
damage that would cause harm to the Congress prospects.

Indeed, the Congress camp has taken the “damage” factor into account,
while saying that party candidate, Francisco Sardinha will scrape
through with a small margin.

Sardinha himself admits that he would win the polls, but with less
margin. The reason for the perceived small margin according to Sardinha
is that some party leaders did not work for the success of the party.“I
will win by a less margin. The margin may come down to 15-20,000 votes.
I admit that I will not get the same margin like in the bypolls”, he said.

Admitting that everyone talks about the damage done by Congress leaders,
Sardinha, however, exuded confidence that the so-called damage would not
damage his electoral prospects. “May be some leaders tried to do the
damage. But, the Congress would win”, he added.

His rival candidate, BJP’s Narendra Sawaikar feels the poll results
would be a close affair, saying it can go either way.

But, he also exuded confidence that he has the better chance towin the
seat this time. “People only talk, the BJP flag will once again fly high
in South Goa. I too believe I will win by a small margin”, he said.

Sawaikar’s confidence comes against the backdrop of sabotage by many
Congress leaders. “No. If we win, we will win on a positive note. We are
not bothered about the damage or sabotage within the Congress camp. We
are very positive about BJP’s positive agenda for south”, he added.

Notwithstanding Sawaikar’s denial of the fact that the BJP is banking on
the internal damage caused to the Congress from within the party fold,
all eyes are focused on the crucial taluka of Salcete, which is expected
to decide the fate of the Congress candidate.

Congress leaders say the party should have a smooth sailing if the
damage factor fails to work against Sardinha. Party leaders also hope
that the battle is not one sided in favour of the BJP in Sanguem,
Canacona and Ponda talukas.

While the counting of votes would decide the fate of Sardinha and
Sawaikar, it will also give an insight how much the UGDP succeeds in
making a dent in the Congress’ traditional stronghold of Salcete.

[Goanet] Goa Score: BJP - 2 INC - 0

2009-05-16 Thread JoeGoaUk

Sorry guys I was wrong.

My apology.

After reading a post saying BJP leading is both constituency, 10 minutes later
I got a phone call to say BJP won both seats. I asked him several times and he
says yes and that he saw it on TV doodharshan showing BjP 2 Cong 0. I post
that post at around 10.15 and I left to attend a 50th wedding aniversary
mass/celebrations. At 12.30 I found out I was wrong from the gatherered guests
there. Time now 3.30pm

Next time I would be more carefull.

Goa score: BJP 1 INC 1
Shripad Sardin are the winners.

Lesson learnt: Next time don't say anything unless you are 100% sure.
In my case I was only 90%

FN does not tell us if he (FN) too admired him and on what basis?

Mario adds:

Of course Fred admires Mugabe based on how he blames the impact on the
Zimbabwean economy on the international community, not on old Robert the Red

[Goanet] On Orissa

2009-05-16 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad

Just now I read a report on the net, titled: 'Many Kandhmal victims alive'.
The link is:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Many-Kandhmal-victims-alive/article
show/4511671.cms

I think the important part of the article is: Explaining the wide gap
between its own and Cheenath's toll figure, the state said: The
petitioner's list included the names of RSS activists -- Dhanurjaya
Pradhani, Ajit Kumar Mallick and Prabhat Panigrahi -- allegedly killed by
naxalites. Further, 10 persons, declared dead on Cheenath's list, were
found alive, the state said, adding the archbishop's list also included
three persons killed in police firing as well as two policemenField
inquiries from tehsildars and local police about missing names from the
official list of those killed during the riots revealed that in 10 cases,
persons are still alive, in 25 cases persons have died because of chronic
and other medical problems, in 12 cases reference/history of persons with
reported names could not be traced in villages mentioned against their
names, and in two cases villages mentioned could not be located, the
Patnaik government said.

I wonder why it is necessary to exaggerate, and resort to lies, to make
one's case. Clearly there seems to be a dangerous agenda in all this.

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

Conclusion. Church attendance appears to be beneficial for maintaining
cognitive function of older persons. Church attendance moderates the impact of
clinically relevant depressive symptoms on subsequent cognitive function.

Mario observes:

As an older person who attends church every Sunday, I am delighted to read this
scientific conclusion, though I thought it was my cognitive function that was
leading me to go to church - not the other way around:-))

Now I can't wait to see the results of a similar study that examines the

[Goanet] Goanet Fidel Castro Award

2009-05-16 Thread Mario Goveia

Date: Wed, 13 May 2009 16:57:52 -0700 (PDT)
From: Marlon Menezes

Basically, what Mario is saying below is that people who happen to be muslims
are different from the rest of humanity and that only the christians
(apparently only those in the US qualify) have the task and ability of doing
what is right.

Mario responds:

No, basically that is not what I am saying.

What I AM saying is that the US has led efforts to liberate millions of Muslims
in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, whereas Marlon and the entire left wing
worldwide has supported the tyrants who oppressed them.

What about this does Marlon fail to understand?

Marlon wrote:

With faulty, if not bigoted logic like this, is it any wonder that this is the
same Mario that was preaching the threat of global cooling some time ago, or
who claimed that Saddam was responsible for the 9/11 attacks in the US?

Mario responds:

Since I was able to show that it was Msrlon whose logic was faulty, I can now
show that his memory is also faulty as I said no such thing about global
cooling or made any claim that Saddam was responsible for 9/11. These are all
blatant calumnies that Marlon tries to proffer from time to time, showing that
either his motives are scurrilous or his memory is failing fast.

Marlon wrote:

With Mario suggesting that all muslims as being morally deficient, with
Marshall fear mongering about hindu fundamentalists hiding behind every pixel
in cyberspace and with Nasci name calling all non-christians as belonging to
uncouth cultures, the seeds of Goanet's Mario-Marshall-Nasci axis of evil is
being set!

Mario responds:

I have no idea what Marshall or Nascy have said and they can answer for
themselves. However, chances are that Marlon is subjecting them to the same
slander he is subjecting me to when he falsely accuses me saying that Muslims -
whom I defend - as being morally deficient, while he continues to support the
brutal tyrants that oppress them, whom I have called morally as deficient as
those who support them.

Since Fred has edged out Marlon for the Hugo Chavez Award for staunch support
for tyrants above and beyond the call of duty, Marlon is now the leading
candidate for the Fidel Castro Award for left wing propaganda above and beyond
the call of duty:-))

Here are statements in the above article that are totally absurd, illogical
and/or false:

Either there IS a God or there is no God. Richard Dawkins should make up his
mind which. Saying that there is probably no God only exposes his own
ignorance and dim wit.

What kind of logic and rationality allows one to conclude that someone is a
dimwit just because he does not possess absolute certainty about the truth or
falsity of a faith-based belief?

They claimed that the use of condoms reduced the chances of the spread of
AIDS - in complete contradiction of all the studies which show that AIDS is
spreading even faster, in spite of (and maybe because of ) the widespread use
of condoms.

The claims that AIDS is spreading even faster is utterly bogus. The implication
that condom use is not at all effective in preventing AIDS is equally false.
The truth is that global AIDS incidence is declining. The prevalence is
declining or leveling off in most countries, including those in Sub-Saharan
Africa. Condom use, while certainly not 100% effective, is in part responsible
for these declines.

After many years of battling this dreaded disease, the medical establishment
came to the realization that it should place far
more emphasis on the prevention of the disease, rather than on curing it.
The purely medical approach to malaria has been conclusively proven to be
inadequate.

This is one of the most ridiculous of false dichotomies I have ever read on
Goanet. Prevention is a medical approach. Without specific medical knowledge
about the cause of a disease, how would one know what to do to prevent it? How
would we adopt measures to get rid of mosquitoes in the case of Malaria?

What is even more absurd is the author is oblivious of the fact that condom use
is a preventive measure against AIDS, even in cases of monogamous relationships
wherein one of the partners has already been infected with HIV?

Read in its proper context, Pope Benedict's observation makes eminent sense
and deserves the appreciation of everyone, including self-professed atheists
and men of medicine, who often refuse to see beyond the point of their noses.

The claim made by the Pope that condom use even aggravates the problems, as
far as AIDS is concerned, is demonstrably false.

School children who are just beginning to mature are encouraged to
experiment with sex. . Now even unnatural same-sex activities are
been promoted.

The above claims are hyperbolic and false. Nobody is actively promoting sex
among school children or same-sex activities.

It is not at all surprising that the distortion of sex has resulted in many
medical and sociological (and psychological) diseases.

A rhetorical statement that is not supported by any factual evidence.

There are many who will vociferously defend homosexuality as being natural
but unless they can demonstrate that heterosexuality is abnormal, they will
fail to be convincing.

An illogical statement! Whether homosexuality is natural, unnatural or
supernatural has no bearing on the fact that heterosexuality is natural and
normal. That homosexuality is a normal natural variation of sexuality has been
demonstrated by countless studies.

Cheers,

Santosh

The People Have Spoken

The People Have Spoken!

- Fr. Cedric Prakash*

The people of India have once again spoken! In an unprecedented and totally
unexpected result, they have voted back to power (and in a very decisive way),
the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Today, is indeed, the triumph of Indian
Democracy!

Whilst there is naturally, plenty of cheering among various sections of the
people, on the one hand and back room analysis on the other, what is evident is
that the people of the country have also given the UPA a life-line. This
life-line is a mandate to complete unfinished tasks and also perhaps to tackle
head long those responsibilities that they were afraid to touch during the past
five years in office.

These would include:

a.. to ensure that the Constitutional rights and the freedoms of every single
citizen of the country are guaranteed and protected.
b.. to lessen the widening gap between the rich and the poor, caused by
lop-sided and anti-people development projects.
c.. to closely monitor the implementation of the National Rural Employment
Guarantee Scheme, (specially in States like Gujarat which has paid scant
attention to this important initiative for the rural poor).
d.. to widen the scope of the Right to Information (RTI) in an effort to stop
corruption and for greater transparency in public life.
e.. to put into place immediately a law against Communal Violence and ensure
that the powerful and vested interest including politicians are brought within
the purview of this law.
f.. to translate the Right to Food Campaign, into very concrete action where
the poor have access to timely and good quality food supplies.
g.. to ensure the independence of the Judiciary, the CBI, the Election
Commission and other Statutory bodies providing them with the motivation and
the freedom to exercise total impartiality.
h.. to legislate as soon as possible on Compulsory Primary Education and the
Reservation for Women in Parliament.

The UPA has a clear task cut out before it. The people of India have truly
spoken out loud and clearly! It is definitely a vote for change, a vote for a
better India.

If the UPA fails to live up to the expectations of the people, they may not be
given another chance. So jago re now!

[Goanet] Kuwaitis mourn the missing in Iraq

2009-05-16 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com

GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994)

Kuwaitis mourn the missing in Iraq

Kuwaitis say their missing loved ones will not be forgotten

After Iraqi troops occupied Kuwait in August 1990, hundreds of Kuwaitis and
nationals of other countries went missing.
The Iraqis were forced out by an international coalition in February the
following year, but as the BBC's Christian Fraser reports from Kuwait City,
many people have still not been found.
Ahmad Esa Matar remembers all too clearly the day the Iraqi soldiers took his
17-year old-boy.
They came early in the morning, he said. Six o'clock, while Khaled was still
in bed.
Nineteen years later, the day is fresh in the memory and still painful to
recount.
I saw him later that day, in the prison, said Ahmad. He was tired, they had
beaten him around the face. He cried when he saw us. He said he thought he'd be
killed. That was the last time I saw him.
Does Ahmad think about that day a lot?
Too much, he said. Every day - for 19 years.

I have a missing brother and a cousin who was found and DNA identified. How
can I ever have any sympathy for the Iraqis?

Iqbal
Relative of missing Kuwaiti
Khaled's body was recovered from a mass grave in Samawa in Iraq in 2004. He had
been blindfolded and shot in the head.
But the return of the body for burial in Kuwait has helped Ahmad and the family
to start rebuilding their lives.
There are plenty of other families in Kuwait who are still clinging to the hope
that their loved ones might yet return. Iqbal still waits for her brother Amman
- even though she knows deep in her heart that he is dead.
Hope is what drives me on, she said. It keeps me strong.
But it also twists the agony.
I hate the Iraqis for what they have done, she said.
I have a missing brother and a cousin who was found and DNA identified. How
can I ever have any sympathy for the Iraqis?
It is thought that all the prisoners of war were executed within three days of
Iraq's withdrawal in February 1991.
Saddam Hussein's henchman Ali Hassan al-Majid - otherwise known as Chemical Ali
- had ordered that they should be buried in mass graves in different provinces
of Iraq.
Retrieved and identified
We started with 605 missing Kuwaitis or third country nationals, said Ibrahim
al-Shahin, Vice President of the National Committee For POW Affairs.
Now we have retrieved and identified the remains of 236 people, who were
brought from mass graves in Iraq and buried in Kuwait.

There is no sign of hundreds of Kuwaitis who went missing

The remaining 370 or so are still open files with the International Committee
of the Red Cross, listed as missing until it is proved they are dead.
The Kuwaitis have built a museum in memory of those who were killed. Around the
walls are the portraits of all those who went missing.
A piece of black tape has been stuck across the corner of some frames,
signifying those who have have been found and returned.
Adel al-Abduljader from the Committee for POWs showed me around the museum and
the photographs of the mass graves they have excavated.
The sites were identified from information supplied by coalition forces and the
Iraqi authorities.
They are pictures that echo the horrors of the Nazi death camps.
'No mercy'
The prisoners were lined up and ordered to kneel, blindfolded, said Mr
Abduljader. And then they were shot twice in the head. Women and men together.
No mercy.

Identification of the remains can provide some comfort for the relatives
Each row was covered with a thin layer of sand before the next victims were
brought forward.
The job of identifying the remains is now in the hands of the Ministry of
Interior's Criminal Evidence Department.
In one case, where three brothers were found in the same grave, they carried
out facial reconstruction to identify the remains.
Each set of bones is given its own number, said the deputy director of
forensic evidence, Brigadier Dr Fahad al-Dosari.
The number corresponds to a date and place where the body was found.
These are the sites we have excavated so far - Samawa 89 bodies, Karbala 78,
Ramadi 25, Amarah 33 and Kuwait 2, he said, going through his list.
On one occasion a doctor who was working with us identified his brother from
the bones we had found.
But the team has not returned to Iraq since 2005. The information from the
Iraqi government has dried up and it is dangerous to travel without guaranteed
protection.

The Iraqis set fire to Kuwaiti oil wells when they withdrew
We would go back tomorrow, said the Brigadier. We have all our tools. We
have our team. We are ready.
The Vice President of the POW committee, Ibrahim al-Shahin, accuses the Iraqi
government of dragging its feet.
We feel the new government in Iraq should really look at this matter more
sincerely.
We hear a lot from them in meetings about how they are also the victims of
Saddam. We understand that. But we tell them that we are dealing

Dear Selma, I did not expect North Goa to go anywhere else - not in 2009.

However, as my earlier post noted: Salcete (South Goa) did elect a
BJP - a few years ago - before the Modi and co came on the scene.

My comment was in response to this from you to JoeGoaUK (who appears
to be an anonymous BJP supporter). You, Selma noted that hell will
freeze over before South Goans elect BJP

It is my understanding that in 1999, Ramakant Angle (BJP) was elected
as the MP from South Goa.

In 1998, Aires Rodrigues (whom I liked immensely till he became what
he is today) suggested in a trans-Atlantic telephone call that I join
him and work to elect the BJP in South Goa.

I suggested to him then (i.e. 1998) that politicians are users. They
are not the type of company educated individuals should keep. I also
suggested to Aires that the BJP would use him and dump him - as soon
as his usefulness is past.

Anyway I have digressed.

All this to suggest that in 1999 Hell (not even the extremely
filthy and slumified Margao gardens) froze over after Ramakant Angle
(BJP) was elected from South Goa.

[Goanet] G’bye Goa: Kols/Kunnbis -- HERALD (Goa), May 17, 2009

2009-05-16 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

G’BYE GOA: KOLS/KUNNBIS
By Valmiki Faleiro

The last major pre-Aryan group to settle in Goa were the Kols. They followed
the Asuras
from Chota Nagpur and, on arrival, subjugated them to lord over the land.
Asuras were
milder people. Kols were fierce, a “semi-savage” hunting tribe. (‘Kol’ means
wild pig.)

The tribe name ‘Kol’ got corrupted to ‘Kul,’ ‘Kulvadi,’ ‘Kulmi,’ ‘Kulambi’ and
‘Kunnbi.’ Kols
were sub-grouped as Velips, Zalmis and Gaunkars – actually occupational caste
names,
also common among Asuras/Gawdas. Velips handled religious affairs, Zalmis
handled
other specific tasks, while Gaunkars, regarded more intelligent, took up
farming, hunting
and assorted survival activities for the community.

Rev. John Wilson thought ‘Kunnbi’ comes from ‘Krishmi’ (tillers of land; also
plough.)
German anthropologist Gustav Oppert denounced the theory and said ‘Kunnbi’ came
from ‘Ku’ (mountain), hence a mountainous tribe that originated in South India,
where
indeed they are known as ‘Kurumbars.’ Rest of India, Kunnbis are found in
Maharashtra,
Gujarat and pockets of north India.

They tilled land, by the slash-burn-cultivate system (‘Kumeri’), yet in use in
hilly areas of
hinterland Goa. And cropped cereals like millet. Like earlier Asuras/Gawdas,
their tools
and implements were of wood or stone – pointed, sharp-edged or blunted, as per
need.
Units of measurement of produce – by weight or volume – like Kudov, Khandi,
Kumbh,
revolved around the numbers 12 and 20 – like 20 smaller units made a single
larger unit
(viz.- 20 khandis equal one kumbh.)

Note the Ks in Ku, Kunnbi, Kurumbar, Kumeri, Khandi, Kumbh!

Once regarded a sub-caste of Marathas, Kunnbis considered themselves just below
Dhangars, but superior to Molvolls (washermen) and Nhavi (barbers.) At their
weddings,
a barber would wash the feet of the bridal couple and apply vermillion to the
guests while
a washerman would spread a clean cloth for the couple to sit for the ceremonies
on the
ground. End of the day, the washerman and barber would carry the child bridal
couple
on their shoulders, dancing to music by Mhars.

Kunnbis, including Christian, shun pork (save a wild boar) and beef, if not so
scrupulous
about a plump bandicoot or a monitor lizard. They were mostly vegetarian.

Kols worshipped the Earth Goddess, represented by the anthill, ‘Roen,’ renamed
‘Sateri’
and ‘Bhumika’ after her capture by Indo-Aryans. They also worshipped trees like
the
‘Peepal’ and ‘Vod’ (and, perhaps in acknowledgement of the status of original
settlers,
the ‘Kel’ tree of Mhars, but in the lowest rung of their female deity
hierarchy.)

Other deities worshipped were Mahamaya and Ravalnath, and those of earlier
tribes –
Betal, Nagesh, Navadurga and Mallikarjun. Saptakoteshwar was a deity of the
Velips.
They also worshipped the dreaded tiger, as deity ‘Vagro.’ A temple to ‘Vagro’
was
demolished by the 16th Century Portuguese in Utorda, Salcete. It was Kols who
first
followed the twin-deity cult of ‘Gram Dev’ (village deity) and ‘Kul Dev’
(family deity.)

They conducted religious affairs by themselves, no latter-day Brahmin ‘bhats.’
They
offered fowls in sacrifice – a white rooster for the Sun God, red or black one
for other
deities, including ‘Chando,’ the Moon God. Billy goats were also sacrificed.

They did witchcraft (‘Ghadiponn’) and human sacrifice. Outright sacrifice was
later toned
down to hanging men from wooden stakes, with iron hooks pierced into the back
(as in
Madkai-Ponda) or rapidly rotated from a wheel (as in Poinguinim-Canacona.) The
blood-
letting was banned by Gov. Joaquim Fernando Pestana on Dec 6, 1844.

Another custom. If a pregnant woman died, her legs were broken and the body
taken out
of the house not through the main door, but through a hole punctured into a
side wall
(resealed immediately after the cremation.) The path to the cremation ground
was then
strewn with thorns and, by way of abundant caution, millet was strewn along the
way –
all because, if the dead one (the poor ‘Alvatin,’ despite her broken legs)
overcame the
thorns on the way back home, she would slip and fall on the millet. And even if
Alvatin
overcame that, she would find no way inside the house, because the passage by
which
she had left was now only a blind wall!

P.S.: Margao activist Siddarth Karapurkar asks (Herald, 10 May) if fish from
sewage-
contaminated Xelpem lake is fit for human consumption. If pigs that feed on
we-know-
what are safe, why would Xelpem fish be otherwise? My thought. (ENDS.)

GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994)

Independents fail to find favour in polls

Two independents in the fray in North Goa and six in south Goa fared poorly and
lost their deposits as they failed to curry favour with the

electorate as in the past Parliamentary elections.

Two lone female candidates in each of the two constituencies, Martha D'Souza in
Panaji and Smita Praveeen Salunkhe in Mormugao segments were among independents
who failed to cross the 4,000-vote mark.

In North Goa, Martha D'Souza, polled the highest among independents in both
constituencies 3,219 votes while the other independent Narcinva Surya
Salgaonkar polled 1,529 votes.

In South Goa, Hamzaz Khan polled the highest, 2,536 votes while Mulla Salim
mustered 1,771 and Jawahar Dias 706, Derrick Dias 679 and Francis Antonio
Fernandes 547.

In the past, it was only Roque Redualdo Antonio da Costa, an independent who
contested the Mormugao seat in 1971 and bagged 44,156 votes in South Goa, who
nearly upset Erasmo de Jesus Jack Sequeira. The UGDP nominee who garnered
58,401 votes, was the only party candidate among five independents then.

Among other independents who had fared well but failed to make the mark in 1971
in Mormugao were Monju Balkrishna Naik Gaonkar who polled 8,833 votes which
remains one of best performance by an independent.

[Goanet] Lok Sabha Elections - Goa Proves the Pintos Wrong

2009-05-16 Thread augusto pinto
By the by: I probably got the Goan MP results right: BJP - south goa
and Congress north Goa. Correct me if I am wrong. In TV they showed
one BJP and one Congress. wrote upkamath to me.

Congratulations U.P.Kamath. Come and collect your prize in Moira.

I had said BJP would get both seats. The only person willing to
actually wager with me was Cecil Pinto who said both would go to the
Congress. Fortunately neither of the Pintos lose anything although I'm
willing to offer Cecil a cold cold cold drink in commiseration as
I've proved that he can be wrong..

Coming back to the results, if one looks carefully it was a close
thing which could have gone any which way. Now Sardinha will possibly
become a Minister as he has the skills. Although I like Shripad Naik
as a person, much more than Sardinha who is an arrogant so-and-so, he
is the sort who should be in State and not National politics. Menorah
Paprika is someone who could have benefited Delhi.

Shripad Naik IMNSHO after two terms in Parliament still does not have
a clue about what being an M.P. is all about. The local BJP wallahs
are however quite happy that he is safely out of the way in Delhi and
not messing up their lives here in Goa. Actually his presence locally
could have made quite a few Congress guys like Ravi Naik and Dayanand
Narvekar nervous so they too will be happy with the results.

Cheers
Augusto
