The Vatican's business is religion and morals. When they
wade into economics and business they can be as moronic as
Karl Marx, the Nehru family, Fidel and Raul Castro.

Who the hell does Pope Benny think pays for his Gucci shoes
and opulent palaces and royal lifestyle..

The Pope should be thankful for their largesse or he may have
to find a job and do some useful work that generates an income

My advice to the Vatican, Stick to religion and helping the
poor, and stay the hell away from economics.

Dear Goanet News

Finally some sensible thinking - thank you Mr D'Silva - shipbreakers from
ALANG - why wasn't this done years ago to remove this eyesore and
environmental hazard from Sinquerim/Candolim beach?

Just check out Jaisu Shipping's website http://www.jaisu.in/projects/htm
under SALVAGE - there's a lovely big photo of the Princess, but precious
little else to inspire confidence when you view their track record in vessel
salvaging.

I fear it may be too late to salvage what is now left of the once-glorious
Sinquerim Beach. Has anyone tried to walk along it recently?

All Goan politicians should hang their heads in shame! What a legacy they are
leaving. This STINKS of COLLUSION!!

Parrikar stated in the Assembly that he was ashamed to be a goan during
discussion of the dastardly burns inflicted on a housemaid. On 8Aug09, I saw a
capsule on our police on BBC that made me ashamed to be an Indian ! Our own
channels show us such happenings today. The world sees our police in various
parts of India in gross human rights violations, encounters  and killing of
unarmed civilians. Police officers living in tents ,poor living conditions and
wages, force ill equipped, poorly educated and trained. The main reasons given
by those interviewed were Legal System slow, people want results, forcing
police who are also under political pressure to take short cuts. The police
force is a colonial remnant, with a 19th century Officials Secrets Act and
mindset. In 2003 the Goa government under Chief Minister Parrikar, repealed the
ineffective Public Men's Corporation Act 88, and introduced in the Legislative
Assembly, the Goa Lok Ayukta Bill
which was referred to a Select Committee. The Goa Police Reforms Bill( which
includes the Lok Ayukta) is also hanging fire. We desperately need an aam admi
police. Unless these Bills see the light of day,the people of India ( and
specially Goa) plight can be likened to that of the abovementioned housemaid!

Someone's cesspool is another piggy's luxury mud bath! Each of us has
our own priorities, our own approaches and our own pet peeves. While I
agree with your point about public money, I think at some point we in

challenge. Anyway, to each his own... just promise me you won't write

 Mervyn,

Here is what I think all of us should write in our emails to the speaker
and other MLAs. But more importantly, we should write it as a
letter-petition to the Herald newspaper with our names on it:

 LETTER

 Dear Sir,

I agree with Samir Kelekar that the Goa Vidhan Sabha is a comedy show. The
threat of imprisonment issued from its chair and benches against a private
citizen for speaking his mind in public, just proved this fact. I am willing
to spend time in prison with Samir to defend my right to freely express this
opinion of mine in this free democratic country of ours.

 Sincerely,

 Santosh Helekar

Goanetters, if you are willing to add your name to this petition, please
say so in this forum or privately to me. I will send it to the editor of
Herald as soon as I receive 100 names. I need to know how many people will
be there with us because I have to make reservations at Aguada. We need at
least 100 bodkam because ex-President Pandurang has told me that we get a
special discount for a party of 100 or more.

Regarding sending the above letter as an email to the actors in the comedy
show, their email addresses are listed on the following website:

 Cheers,

[Goanet] Goan Political Tragicomedy

Goan Political Tragicomedy

It is time for the people to draw the curtain on the tragicomedy our
politicians
have made of governance, says PETER FERNANDES

Most Goans are crazy about tiatr. Goans have enjoyed good shows for over a
century,
some tragic, many others depicting social evils combined with religious
insight to
bring change in society, and a few others purely comic. From the first-ever
tiatr in
history - 'Italian Bhurgo' by Lucasinho Ribeiro, staged in Mumbai on 17 April
1892 -
until today, this form of theatre, with several acts entwined with songs backed
by a
live band, continues to enthrall and enlighten Goan society. Over this period,
renowned artists walked the stage and made their mark in Goa and elsewhere in
the
world through their notable efforts to entertain our hearts and minds. We
salute
them with pride and gratitude. They have left us a rich legacy to emulate in
order
to enrich our society with good values, and to reach higher goals of sublime
living.
Our tiatr reflects the social, political and religious life of society; and,
very
often, it is a protest against the wrong in society, which is projected through
the
songs, comedy and drama. Contemporary artists continue the heritage today, with
enthusiasm and pride, receiving little or no support from our government.

Incredibly, we see our politicians nowadays enacting such living drama for all
to
view with disdain and disgust. These public servants conduct their lives in a
deplorable manner. Nonetheless, this melodrama encompasses the nature of
tragicomedy. Dayanand Narvekar did not realise that the camera was on when he
delivered with great audacity his unscripted discourse on corruption. This
subject
Corruption is the creation of our leaders, and, as good actors and teachers,
they
want to marinate our society completely. I hope Narvekar is never afflicted
with
dementia or Alzheimer's. Our memories are still fresh about his unbecoming
behavior,
as he faced allegations of sexual harassment, cheating, forgery, corruption and
misappropriation of funds. Nevertheless, we have to commend Narvekar for loudly
crying out his displeasure over the treatment he received from government
bureaucrats, through which he exposed the level of corruption and the plight of
the
common man. The present government takes pride in being a government for aam
admi.
This is a tragicomedy, for in reality they have woven a massive web of
corruption to
strangle citizens to death.

Before Narvekar lost his cabinet berth as Minister of Finance, he seemed to
have
been portraying a similar drama with MLAs and other ministers. Mickky Pacheo
was
bent on stripping Narvekar of the finance portfolio not long ago, for having
treated
him with similar contempt, which Narvekar abhors at the present juncture. This
explains the dynamic of our government, and the reason why every MLA is vying
for a
ministerial berth in the ruling administration. Every minister looks out for
his own
interest, and the other MLAs keep constant watch to see if something might fall
from
the minister's plate.

The people of Goa should keep in mind that our government has no vision for our
Goa.
Our leaders are like weathercocks - they easily change their direction
according to
the weather. Churchill Alemao wants to have three bridges in his constituency,
since
he holds the PWD portfolio. As long as he is the PWD Minister, the rest of Goa
must
watch and pay taxes to fulfill his selfish dreams for Navelim. How did Goa fall
into
the hands of such corrupt leaders? For how long will this drama unfold? And,
when
will Goans say, Enough?

On the floor of the Assembly, Narvekar challenged the PWD minister for granting
permits for construction along the NH17, where use of the land was frozen for
the
express purpose of expanding the highway. Narvekar is determined to fight over
this
matter, even in the courts. Churchill first denied the violation and then tried
to
justify it by citing the state of Kerala, which has done like projects under
similar
circumstances. How can the Chief Minister tolerate such action from his
ministers?

But I am amused and entertained by the whole business. I just want to recall,
for
the sake of the audience, the opening scene of this drama. Speaking at Alemao's
birthday celebrations, Narvekar told Churchill, I may be older than you as far
as
experience is concerned, but I

These bloody lilies always make me sad

And you don’t see them always or throughout the year.
They make a brief appearance and go back to sleep underground for next 10-11
months.

After the start of monsoon, they suddenly start showing up (as if coming from
no where).
Another peculiarity of these lilies is – bud/flower comes first followed by
leaves.

You don’t have to take care of them by digging, watering etc.
They just come at the right/set time, display and go.

It reminds me of our  house where I spent most of my life. They would grow
year after year,  in one big line in a L shape (two sides of our house).
And they would sprout out on our main way/path to the public well
( which was about 150mtrs away).  While carrying two-two buckets full of water
(I used buckets iso pots, a pot was used only to fill up bucket) , we always
made separate pathway (longer route)  so that they are not disturbed or damaged.

During  the time of  Saibinn visits our home, we put some of it (usually one
each)  in
a jar/bottle and made 2 flower vases (Vaz)  and place on the table in front of
Saibinn.  However, despite the Saibinn (O/L of Milagros) visiting our homes
upto
five times a year (now once a year), we were not so lucky all the times.  As
said,
the brief appearance of lilies only last for about 2-3 weeks.

I did not even know it’s name both local or English or botanical until I saw it
in
the local newspapers about 7  weeks ago.  Again, recently I saw them in
another newspaper with no names.  Actually, I wanted to capture them again this
time but it was too late. Now, I  will have to wait for another 11 months or so.

For me they are very nostalgic as they grew with me for most part of my life.

Sadly, they are not showing up now around our (deserted) house
Perhaps, they like our 'zag' (house inmates) or our company

Here they are

When I finally decided to join Goanet a few weeks ago, I did so with the
intention to just concentrate on what is *happening in Goa* and for that
matter *on this century* , as I mistakenly saw this net as a way to help
and contribute to improve things in Goa and support our brothers and sisters
in Goa in their battles against the serious issues that have been
deteriorating Goa for a few years now.

But Mario Goveia’s piece on Obama THE EUPHORIA HAS EVAPORATED forced me to
react , as I feel his reactionary political views should not be allowed to
be aired here without a challenge, and I have no intention of engaging
further in this discussion beyong this reply to Mario's comments.

I have met goans settled in USA that share this type of reactionary views,
that make me despair . Trying to engage in any serious dialogue regarding
these matters with them is a waste of time. But this is different , as this
type of views on this net need some clarification.

Talking of Obama’s election Mario said and I QUOTE - While that was a
historical milestone that speaks well of the American electorate, there were
several far more qualified and accomplished African-Americans than the one
they picked, who is likely to set others from his community back an entire
generation.

Well, where were all those several far more accomplished African-Americans?
The ones I vaguely remember were Republicans I think, that is what made them
“far more accomplished” in your opinion Mario? They were out of the
election race in the very beginning as far as I remember. We followed the
USA election campaign here in the UK and I don’t recall any more
African-Americans
running for President. Where were they hiding?

And what on earth is meant by QUOTE - who (Obama?) *is likely to set
others from his community back an entire generation. !!?*

Are you joking? ! For your information everywhere in the rest of the
world, the majority of us think precisely the opposite.

Obama is admired for who and what he is, the courage of his politics, his
intelligence and vision. If anything, his election has given a tremendous
boost and hope to all the oppressed around the world and to the
African-American population; it has given them the courage to challenge
racism, it has given them the hope of equal opportunities and finally some
hope of social justice and different attitude to foreign policy.

It is a shame that the richest country in the world should have the levels
of extreme poverty that we know exists in the USA, the total lack of
universal access to health care unless you are rich, and above all the
unbelievable lack of awareness of the rest of the world, poor media
information and poor education in general (not talking of top univerisities
of course) . That is why this misinformed population voted for GW Bush
twice ! And that for me says it all!

You make me laugh Mario and proved my point when you stated the following
about Obama:

QUOTE This is because of his over-reaching far left wing philosophies which
are out of sync with most Americans as they have begun to realize after
initially believing his campaign promises and giving him the benefit of the
doubt.

Over-reaching far left wing philosophies ??? Is this what you call the
attempt of sharing a bit of your wealth with the poor down trodden
Americans? Are you a Christian ? probably not, because I think Jesus
Christ was the first Communist in the world!

The fact is that your economic system needs fixing, your foreign policies
need changing drastically, and even your so called democratic system needs
a reform , like getting rid of the powerful lobby groups that influence and
dominate the political process in favour of the privileged few. And Obama is
trying to do exactly that - cleaning the system! And that takes time! I am
not surprised that people like you don't like it! Tough!

QUOTE - However, among Americans, six months into this presidency, the
euphoria has evaporated, at least among likely American voters.

Have you by any chance heard of the saying *“ **Rome** was not built in one
day”?* What did you realistically expect him to achieve in 6 months given
the monumental mess Obama inherited from his predecessor GW Bush?!!

QUOTE - The glaring inexperience and lack of any previous achievements and
inability to read the lessons of the past and from around the world have
become evident with

'An Ode to Sorpotel' was written by Philip Furtado. As far as I'm
aware it is his only published poem. He was the son of a very
accomplished poet, Joseph Furtado of Pilerne.

Joseph Furtado who died in 1947 lived in Mazagon. Philip Furtado
used to stay circa 1967 at 5 Hazarat Terrace, Sankli Street, Byculla,
Bombay-8. Could anyone find out and tell us whether he is still there
or what has happened to him and his children?

Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday called for a radical rethinking of the global

Outsourcing in the world market and the economies of the western countries.

The Pope writes in the Encyclical, “The so-called outsourcing of production can
weaken the company’s sense of responsibility towards the stakeholders — namely

The encyclical is Benedict's third. Filled with terms like globalisation,

commentary on the sources of our economic woes and a holy blueprint for
recovery based on something greater than the once mighty dollar.

At my advanced age, I am too faint hearted and not as fool hardy as some of you
to risk jail to stand up for our freedom.

However, I give you my solemn promise, if any of you are incarcerated, I will
visit you daily with whatever refreshments that the jail authorities will allow.

On a more serious note, since I am not and have never been an Indian National,
though I am a niz Goenkar, I do not want to risk being booted out of the Goa
I love so dearly.
I am disappointed that our politicians have chosen to create a tempest in a
teapot.  I guess
Samir's assertions have hit home. Tut-tut !

 Dears
'An Ode to Sorpotel' was written by Philip Furtado. As far as I'm
aware it is his only published poem. He was the son of a  very
accomplished poet, Joseph Furtado of Pilerne.

Joseph Furtado who died in 1947 lived in Mazagon.   Philip Furtado
used to stay circa 1967 at 5 Hazarat Terrace, Sankli Street, Byculla,
Bombay-8. Could anyone find out and tell us whether he is still there
or what has happened to him and his children?

Carmen Miranda wrote: But  Mario Goveia’s piece on Obama THE EUPHORIA
HAS EVAPORATED  forced me to react ,

Frederick [FN] Noronha responded: Hi Carmen, Don't worry too much
about Mario and his reactionary political views. I often suspect that
he repeats them often so as to convince himself! . On the other
hand, if you dare to discuss with him, then you will soon
find yourself (and Goanet) caught in a quagmire of ceaseless
discussion, that never ends, tires you out and simply wins on the
basis of triumphant last-wordism!

Dear all,

Unlike Frederick, I neither believe that Mario's political views are
reactionary nor that he repeats the views to convince himself.

I submit that Mario strongly believes in what he says/write. He is a
pucca Republican, and his views are clearly mainstream Republican
viewsand are available daily on Fixed News.

And we do know - do we not - that the majority of the folks in the US
also believed those views, and voted the Pubbies into power in 2000.
Then in 2008, they showed them the Exit Door. In short, do not call
us until we call you.

This obviously must have come as a shock to the Pubbie system, for
surely, they did not expecte to lose so badly to the Dems.

It would not be the first time that the Pubbies would be so wrong
about facts others could see but they could not comprehend. We can
explain all of this as being due to their faulty intelligence.

So, what exactly are the Pubbies to do with this guy called Obama?
You would expect them to criticise him, would you not?

They are now even following well known Dem traditions of
sweet-hearting with other women. What? But then what is a man to
do with the irrestible call of Argentina from the Appalachians?

These are 'licentious' times, as the Sadhu Sant Senhor Rano would say
when referring to Samirbab.

Having noted that, there is a serious pitfall awaiting Obama and
that is Healthcare Reform.

I believe that in trying to Overhaul HealthCare, he might overwhelm
himself. And this is what Mario's amigos are hoping for. Otherwise,
the Pubbies are in the forest for the next 21 years.

So, do expect a lot of Pubbie angst and 'staged' hyperactivity based
on Health Care.

Obama would do well to stay clear of the Extreme Left within his own
Dem party, and the Hawks of the Right among the Health Insurers, Big
Pharma and the doctors lobby.aka as the Pubbies. (It might
interest you to know that Mario has a distinct personal and financial
interest in 2 of the 3 members of the 'hawks-club' listed immediately
above. So, there is a vested interest operating here)

BTW: Britain has learnt a lesson on the cost of Health Care. Sure, it
does cost infinitely less than an uncessary guerra para terra of
Coconut Oil e Comercio das Armas..But it can get messed up as
it was by an extreme Rightie like Maggie did in the 1980s.

So, I say to Obama walk good i.e. Tred Carefully

To the Pubbies, I say Take a Hike even if it is in the Appalachians.

I think Augusto will have a better chance of getting a response if you change
the subject line, as it could be possible that Joseph Furtado's progeny don't
care for sorpatel.

Any news of the renowned Goan poet Joseph Furtado or his family would be most

 Dear Sir/Madam,

Please can you publish my letter in your esteemed newspaper.

Sincerely,
Arwin Mesquita,
Address:

Subject: Corrupt Goa Government on Defensive

It is common knowledge of the Disgustingly High Level of Corruption in the
Goa Government; which is the main reason today, for the gradual destruction
of Goa Its Identity. The outburst of this corrupt government against
writers Samir Kelekar Peter Fernandes, is un-warranted and who today in
his/her right mind can vouch for the integrity of the Goa Government. Many
ageing MLA's after years of looting the public in ease, are now feeling the
heat and want to send a strong message of intimidation to the Goan
Public. Instead of demanding an apology from Samir Peter, it is the ageing
corrupt MLA'S in the government who should apologise to Goans for all their
misdeeds over the last so many years. The People of Goa should will not be
cowed down by these threats of a corrupt government!!

 Subject: RP 2021 a joke?

As reported recently in the Media, the Government has incorporated the
definition of Ministry of Environment Forests i.e. “As per the Ministry of
Environment and Forests, mega projects are those which have 20,000 sq mt or
above built-up area and require environmental impact assessment clearance
from Ministry. If this is true, then what was the point of having the
peoples participation in the RP 2021, if the Government will anyway do wants
to do what it wants to realise its illegitimate profits?

Also if it is true, does our in-competent Government realise that such
definitions obviously does not suit small states like Goa? Then again the
Goa Government will of course do what it wants because they have perfected
the art of manipulating democracy via various means; one of which are
migrant vote-banks!!

Mario G. is an old friend of  G- Net.  As long as our words dont ricochet, as
bullets do, we can contuinue to elicit non-lethal 'reaction' from each other.
Am I a left-wing reactionary for applauding the German governments seizure of
three quarters of all assets, down to hog hindquarters, when the war ended, I
suppose I am.  It did pay for some rebuilding of the nation. I welcome Carmen,
her own opinions, and her reactions,  to other voices.   eric.

Yes there are echoes but they have nothing to do with Darjeeling tea powder
boxes
that were thrown in the Boston harbour.
It isabout a Goan family , Prazeres Prabhus ( a fictitious surname ) who
have certain
traditions to maintain or so i was told by my son who is employed in the
U.S. Being
on friendly terms with a young man of this family, we , my wife and i were
invited to
their sprawling mansion for an afternoon tea session. I was told by my son
to maintain
silence and not to open my mouth unless requested to do so. My son adds
further,
please forgive me daddy, but do not behave as Goenkar chatterbox. A few
ooh's and
aah's every now and then and a curt appreciation of their sitting room
furniture.
crockery etc. would do. All these items , I believe, were brought from India
or rather
bought or gifted to them by the departing British families to our young
man's
great grandfather who apparently was the traditional B of the famous Goan
ABC class.
All went very well and our hosts were very ;polite to the extreme but
nevertheless
a bland session by Goan standards.
After we returned to India, I happened to read an article about the life of
British families
in India. They, about 2 or 3 families were in the habit of meeting for a
week end dinner.
All propah behaviour at the table but hardly any conversation from the
butler's ;point
of view. Apparently the British had a golden rule never to discuss anything
with natives
around. After dinner is over, and the butler and his assistants retired to
their living
quarters, the British families had a sherry (port) session when they were at
their
voluble best cracking jokes at the expense rajah and other local
dignitaries.
It can be safely assumed that the only aspect of the British way of ;life
in India
that the butler came across were their ;manners at the dining table and the
butler
thought this was the acme of their life and therefor the butler imposed the
British
mores of silence upon his family members for generations to come.

Goanetter in the News: A Diplomat Who Draws the Famous

By Ekaterina Strekalova

Click play to view a slideshow of photos from the exhibition and Mr.
D'Souza's artwork.

Aug. 5 – Just when most United Nations officials were heading home,
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took the elevator last night to the
first floor of the Secretariat to look at a portrait of himself and
inaugurate a new exhibition of pencil drawings, “Portraits of Power,”
by Placido D’Souza, an artist and former diplomat who worked for
Indian Foreign Service for 34 years.

“I find it a truly excellent exhibition, covering a large number and
variety of very famous people depicting their moods and their
expressions,” said Hardeep Puri, India’s ambassador and permanent
representative to the UN, in an interview with UNA-USA.

The show also has portraits of other UN officials, politicians and
Nobel Prize winners, including Mother Teresa. The art will be
displayed till Aug. 14. During his service as a consul general to
India, D’Souza was able to connect with many of his portrait subjects,
who personally signed the work.

“This gentlemen met these people as they are, sketched them the way
they are. I think that makes a tremendous impact on all of us,” said
Suhail Khan, from the Department of UN Peacekeeping Operations.

Promela Suri, who works in the under-secretary-general’s office and is
the president of the Society for Promotion of Indian Culture and
Experience, a culture club in the UN that organized and curated the
exhibition, said: “This exhibit is like bringing unity and diversity
together, because people of power on the portraits are from all over
the world. And we are bringing them to the UN, which is the right
place.”

Although Puri worked with D’Souza for almost 20 years in the
diplomatic community, he was surprised to learn that D’Souza had
another vocation. “I was not aware of the fact that he has this
artistic side to his personality,” Puri said. “I only discovered that
years later and this is the first time I’ve seen the exhibition
myself.”

An old friend of the artist, Mohan Jethwani, a former deputy
commissioner of New York's Parks and Recreation Department, said of
D’Souza: “He never showed his artistic side to us. When we would get
together, we just sit down as a couple of friends, old-timers, and
talk about old days when we were little kids in Pakistan and India,
growing up. None of us had any money, all of us practically starving.
We used to marvel at our fortune, at how fortunate we are to be in New
York City, the greatest city in the world!”

Reflecting on his childhood in India, D’Souza said to UNA-USA: “I used
to sketch and draw early on. There was plenty of time in my hands. In
those days, you had nothing else, frankly.” The artist referred to the
lack of TV, radio and Internet in his youth as “a great advantage for
free rein of your imagination.”

Puri, reflecting the feelings of the many Indian people at the
exhibition, said, “We are very proud to have a person who is so
versatile in his talent, who is not only a very senior diplomat but
also an accomplished artist.”

“He is also a terrific writer,” Jethwani, a former refugee from
Pakistan, said. “He started a magazine called Darshan, which talks
about glories of India’s past. He introduced me to an India I didn’t
even know after living here for 50 years.”

When the club approached the artist to offer exhibition space in the
headquarters to show his art, D’Souza said, “OK, no problem.”

In a long tradition of cultural clubs within the UN community, this
two-year old group is the largest membershipwise. Forty percent are of
non-Indian background, including a significant number of Americans,
who joined the club to learn about Indian culture.

“I’m not looking particularly for publicity or commercial interest,”
he added. “It’s my hobby, and I enjoy my hobby. I have no former
training, I must confess. I reproduce as best as I can what I see on a
portrait.”

Ban personally complimented D’Souza, saying he found the portrait so
close to what he looks like that he asked to have one for himself.

At the end of the opening, D’Souza said to the guests: “This is work
that, I hope, speaks for itself. And when your work speaks for itself,
please do not interrupt.”

Ekaterina Strekalova is a Ph.D candidate at the State University of
New York at Buffalo and a publications intern at UNA-USA.

Shame on Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and his Congress government for the
anti-goan people stance. Everything done is claimed to be in the interest of
the 'aam admi' but it is well known that the mining and real estate lobby
stands to be benefited. This government has not been satisfied with only
looting the exchequer but is actively involved in disempowering the Goan
people. The recent amendments carried out clearly demonstrate the truth. Even
the Special status demand has been twisted to get special status for more funds
from the Centre instead of protecting Goa's threatened land and environment.
With every passing day hordes of migrants are descending into Goa and are being
systematically diverted to various Congress constituencies to strenghten the
vote bank. Every Goan knows what is happening, but no Goan is ready to strike
really hard. Everyone is happy in tickling the behind of a rampaging elephant.
Dharnas and public meetings, with people running home even before it
is over, are not going to deter this government from its mischief. What we
have seen in these last 12 months is an all out defiance of the people's wishes
with a very well colluding political opposition. It is really theatrics and
only theatrics, to show the people that there is an opposition that embarasses
the government. It does not take a minute to realise that it is all stage
managed. We are being governed by boozers, gamblers and screw drivers. This
government definitely needs to be brought down if Goa is to be saved.

Raia locals urged not to sell fields to buildersTNN 6 August 2009, 04:15am
IST

MARGAO: Konsanchem fest' (the harvest festival) was celebrated with
religious fervour and traditional gaiety at Our Lady of Snows Church, Raia,
on Wednesday.

The celebrations commenced with parish priest Cipriano da Silva leading
members of the Raia comunidade, confrarias, priests and people from all
walks of life in a procession to the paddy field known as Saibinichi Kongi'
where he invoked God's blessings and prayed for a good harvest.

*Speaking to media persons after cutting the new corn, Fr Cipriano made a
fervent appeal to the people to cultivate their fields and refrain from
selling them to builders.
*
Konsanchem fest will have no significance if all our paddy fields get
destroyed. A day may come when we may have to celebrate this traditional
event without konsam (new sheaves of paddy), as there won't be any farmer
left in Goa. Let us all work together to keep our Goa clean and green. Let
us take care of our fields and all the natural resources that have been
gifted to us by God, Fr Cipriano said.

He further urged the government to give up the idea of acquiring fields for
construction projects.

The parish priest, together with the faithful, later walked in procession to
the church for a concelebrated thanksgiving mass presided over by Fr Daniel
Pereira, director of Laity Centre of the Archdiocese of Goa. The blessed
sheaves were then distributed to the faithful.

About 300 bags of food items were distributed to the poor and the needy on
the occasion of the feast..

Influx of uncontrolled Migrants into Goa

Reading goanet during the last couple of days has got me thinking, Seby for his
stand on the mining issue against the powerful mining lobby was branded
Naxalite, Venita after being dragged off a Gram Sabha became an accidental
activist, Rajan Parrikar for his ghatti stand, was said to be obsessed against
ghatti culture and was termed racial and the term used as derogatory and now
Arwin has been accused of playing God for his stand on controlled migrants by
some migrant sympathisers, probably they think that they are the only ones who
have a heart in them and the likes of Arwin are heartless people or could be
with the kashties dwindling or disappearing some people would want to see,
more dhotis and lungies floating up and down the plains and open spaces of
Goa, which will be lot more familiar sights to them.

I fail to understand how come people do not notice the huge anomalies which
exist, incubate and flourish right under their nostrils, or is there a Sahara
Valley somewhere in Goa that they dwell in, and not come out of it or are they
the residents of the Governor's Palace at Cabo Raj Niwas and hence haven't seen
anything out side of their paradise and so, are ignorant of the existence of
threat to Goa and Goans due to the influx of uncontrolled migrants.

If Arwin is playing Goa, what are his critics playing ? Solomon, considered to
be the wisest men to be born on earth, who have to knowledge of all and answers
to all ?

Some have even asked Arwin to leave the Gulf and go to Goa and start acting on
his notions rather than filling up cyberspace, is it a guilt feeling that they
have, of having left their home land for greener pastures, and want to be
respected by their accommodators, they need not have that guilt feeling and I am
sure our Goans in other countries will never ever out number the locals and
dirty their surroundings, I would like to tell those guys who think like wise
that Awirn has done and is still doing a lot more for Goa and Goans from here in
the Gulf and during his numerous visits to Goa, than what the wise guys must
have collectively done for Goa.

JC has rightly supported Rajan Parrikar on the issue of present state in which
Panjim has befallen, and trust me it's not just Panjim, it's most parts of our
beautiful Goa that have been littered with shanties and used as public toilets.

A lot would be appreciated if Arwin's critics would except the fact that Goa
will soon be like a party hall which can only house twenty couples but is filled
with five hundred with just a couple of toilets, people should be wise enough to
realize, what effect that could have on the party hall and the over all scenario
of Goa in a few years time by then the avalanche could be too forceful to
negate.

I say, get your blindfolds off and see the reality and come up with answers of
the possible can do's and if not let others do what you as a Goan are suppose
to do, without being a hindrance to them, I must actually say that Arwind has
infact handled himself well despite all the unwarranted criticism. I would like
to once again emphasize that Arwin is not against migrants but believes like a
good many of us, that there should be control over the migrants flooding Goa.
Like most of you, I too wander why some people think like our corrupt gutless
politicians ? Each one is entitled to each one's thoughts, I do rest my case.

I WANTED TO………

A sweet grandmother (Catarina) telephoned Apollo   Hospital , and timidly
asked:-

Catarina: Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is
doing?

Nelly: (The operator responded), I'll be glad to help you dear. What's the
patient's name and room number?

Catarina: (In her weak tremulous voice) Mrs. C. R. Miranda, Room 23.

Nelly: Let me place you on hold while I check with her nurse.

After a few minutes the operator returned to the Phone.

Nelly: Oh, good news. Her nurse has told me that Mrs. Miranda is doing very
well. Her blood pressure is fine; Her blood work just came back as normal. And
her physician, Dr. Pereira, has scheduled her to be discharged on Monday.

Catarina: Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried! God bless you for the
good news.

Nelly: You are more than welcome. By the way, is Mrs. Miranda your daughter?

Catarina: No…., I am the patient Catarina Ruzada Miranda in Room 23. I wanted
to know how exactly I am doing, because no one tells me anything!

The sole voice of reason, puts foot in mouth, it is entertainment but I'd
rather pay some money and go watch the proms.

Mario responds:

What we see above is a graphic example of the infamous Goan crab mentality in
action: two Goanetters falling over each other to be critical without having
any idea what they are talking about [see link below].

This is precisely why I am thrown into the role of the lone voice on Goanet of
reason, truth and peace:

PRESS NOTE: For favour of publicity

KONKANI TAKES TO THE PIANO, WITH AN EXPAT INITIATIVE ON SONG

Do songs like Cathrina, Claudia, Lisboa, and Bandra Festak
ring a bell and trigger off nostalgia? If yes, then you'll be
surprised to learn about the new shape these popular Konkani
hits of the yesteryears have come out in, thanks to a
Canada-based initiative of expat Goans.

An ambitious project gets kicked off on coming Sunday, Aug 9,
2009, with the release of the first volume of The Greatest
Konkani Song Hits by Canadian-Goan attorney and musician
Francis Rodrigues.

Over the last five decades, radio and TV and the internet
have given a new boost to Konkani music. So many talents also
took it to a new high -- Frank Fernand, Manuel Alphonso, Chris
Perry, Wilfy Rebimbus in Mangalore, Alfred Rose and others.

But, says Francis Rodrigues: The conundrum however has been
three-fold - no written music exists for this milieu, no form
of translation -- idiomatic or literal -- for the Diaspora Goan
and Konkan, or music aficionados from other races, other cultures.

So Rodrigues' dream is to translate and transcribe not dozens
but hundreds of songs. He has started with the first volume,
which contains 30 popular Konkani numbers.

To be released this Sunday, The Greatest Konkani Song Hits
international song book, covered extensively in the media
this weekend at 4 pm Sunday at the Kala Academy.

The author, Canadian-Goan attorney and musician Francis
Rodrigues, will give a short talk and a pianist will perform.
This will be followed by a tea-service, and book-signings.

The event is co-sponsored by the Kala Academy. It is open to
all and unticketed, but entrance is on a first-come,
first-serve basis.

Being released internationally on and around World Goa Day --
marked by expat communities and in Goa on August 20 each year
-- this work will be also released on August 15 at Staines,
UK; August 20 at Toronto, Canada and August 30 at the US. See
http://www.konkanisongbook.com/

The 220-page A4 sized book priced at Rs 850 contains the
original sheet-music, transcribed and notated in detail.
Besides Konkani, it also includes some Portuguese and Swahili
songs, from the Goan/Konkani diaspora.

Music chords with printed diagrams decorate the sheet-music,
so the songs can be accompanied by harmonic instruments like
the piano, accordion, keyboard, or guitar. Catering to bands
and ensembles worldwide, separate music notations in
tablature for the guitar are included too.

These songs have been translated to verse, which not only
increased their charm tenfold, but now enables these great
songs to be sung in English too.

There are detailed liner and program notes, which brings the
reader the stories and background behind these fabulous songs
and their composers.

Canadian master-pianist Victor Martins has been filmed
performing the songs on a DVD, which forms part of the book.

Rodrigues points to the 'golden era' of Konkani music and
says he plans to continue his work.

Over 500 songs clamoured for attention, only 4% of which
could be accommodated in one volume! We've extended that by
adding ten more gems to this first volume, making a grand
total of 30 songs, which figure we will maintain in
succeeding volumes of this series, he added.

Many modern bands perform these songs, playing by ear! This
book seeks to redress this lacuna, by providing not only the
sheet-music accurately transcribed, but even rhymed translations
and separate solo-guitar arrangements in tablature.

Says he: For the very first time here is the music of Chris
Perry, Frank Fernand, Wilfy Rebimbus, M.Boyer, Alfred Rose,
H. Britton, Fadhili Williams, Henry D'Souza, B. Magno, Los
Payos, Paulo Borges, Romeo Mendes, Manuel Alphonso, Silviano
Barbosa, Reginald Fernandes, etc -- transcribed perfectly
note-for-note, playable on any instrument!

This first volume includes Adeus (Bhuerantlo Munis),
Kampala, Sacrament Zoddlo, Bandra Festak, Mollbailo Dou,
Malaika Maria Isabel, Encosta Tua Cabecinha, Cecilia,
Mogacho Divo, Proud To Be A Goan, Marialina, Maria Pitache,
Calangute, Bebdo, Sweater Kori, Tambdde Roza, Hanv Saiba,
Don Kallzam, Cadiza-za-za-za, Garacho Divo, Ixttaghot,
Calangute, etc.

Folks,
This is something you do not see often on Goanet.

Two people, who cannot be described as the best of
friends, joining hands together. The cost of not doing so
will be to give a green light to the politicians in Goa to
muzzle the press.

Most of you are aware what will follow if the politicians
do succeed in muzzling the press.

My request to all of you, i.e. to those who have not yet
done so, is to send an email to Santosh to have your
name added to the petition.

Evey name on the petition helps.
Every single one.
