***I came to know about Dr.Tullio Simoncini's new treatment of cancer some
time back.
"At the beginning of the 1900s, one person out of 100 died of cancer; today
it is one out of three.

We foresee that within a few years one out of two people will die of cancer.

A mortality rate of 90 per cent, that is, 1.8 million deaths out of the 2
million cases recorded every year throughout the world, is observed for the
majority of tumors of the digestive apparatus, those for example that are
not subject to diagnostic ambiguities (such as esophagus, stomach, liver,
and pancreas). The results for lung cancer are always similar, that is, the
same 90 per cent death rate, and so on for all those cancers where
mystification or data manipulation is not possible.

Cancer is the most important problem in medicine, not only because of its
size, but especially because of the long symptomatological line that comes
with this disease, especially in its more advanced phases, and the state of
extreme psychological suffering which both the patient and their relatives
are victims of.

It is no coincidence that the American president Richard Nixon in far-off
1971 proclaimed a real war against the "disease of the century". Since then,
this war has absorbed, worldwide, a quantity of economic, scientific and
human resources which exceeds the limit of any imagination, but the
results - it is useless to hide it - are a failure. Apart from the
continuously renewed commitments, the repeated promises, and the supposedly
miraculous most recent findings, there is very little that is concrete: the
cause of cancer is and remains unknown.

The problem is unsolved. Each year, millions of people are annihilated by
this inexorable disease, as if they had been sucked into a spiral of death
and pain which is almost always impossible to fight. Cancer is the enormous
sword of Damocles, the terrible vindictive god of a surpassed social system,
where defenseless citizens must passively accept a bankrupted management of
their health, and are forced to delegate to undeserving others - the blind
businessman at the vertex of the pyramid - the care of their disease".

***It is some type of alleviation. It is not total cure.
Regards.
Fr.Ivo

Please do not trust such unproven quack treatments, just because someone offers
his/her testimonial promoting it. Please read this important information for
cancer patients on the Quackwatch website, which advises people to avoid
dubious remedies such as Simoncini's Bicarbonate treatment for cancer.

If so, would you mind buying one ticket of Rs.70 for Rs.500?
Tony Dias in an interview (in GT I think, about 10 days ago),  claimed

However, I know from a reliable source that tiatr tickets were available

Something you may not encounter in Goa.
Thinking on your feet.
Now you know why the cost of healthcare is so high.:=))
Regards, Gilbert

An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist.  He shared offices
with several other doctors.  The waiting room was filled with patients. As he
approached the receptionist's desk, he noticed that the receptionist was a
large unfriendly woman who looked like a wrestler.  He gave her his name.
In a very loud voice, the receptionist said,
"YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE.
YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?"

All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at the
very embarrassed man.  He recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice
replied,
"NO, I'VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION,
BUT I DON'T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS."
DON'T MESS WITH OLD FOLKS.:=))

One of the tragic events which occurred
in Goa this week was the death of 55 year

electrocuted by a stray live wire lying
on a beach. This incident has sent shock
waves and created an outrage even as
negligence by certain Government

Albert writes:- It is very sad to hear about the death of our beloved Joaquim
and his son in Morjim. Electricity department is one of the worst department in
the whole of Goa. Electricity wires are fitted with stays. It is just a plain
electrical wire that is connected from one end to other end. If by chance the
live wire breaks it falls on the stay and a shortcircuit is created and the
power supply is cut off immediately. But the lines man do not bother to check
whether the stays are there or not. Transformers are to be protected by some
sort of fencing. One can see a load shutter .It is a long pole with a handle
fitted to each transformer. The handle must have a rubber coating because if by
chance someone touches the handle while the transformer gets tripped he /she
can be electrocuted. We see electrical poles bent and some are damaged too. We
see electrical wires are bent so low that there is a possibility of contact. In
many places I have seen creepers grown right through to reach the transformer
and the creeper has already taken possesion of the transformer . Electricity
lines touching tree branches. Tranformer boxes kept open and sometimes fitted
with a wire instead of a lock. Transformers and electrical fittings are rusty.
Some are loosely connected. Sometimes the lines men do dissection electrical

Albert writes:- Why should I contribute to Caritas Goa ? This organisation is
created by the church to look after the poor in Goa. The poor need not beg for
money but they can be found out by looking at their house, their dress and
their surrounding. Two young souls lost their lives in Morjim. Has Caritas ever
thought of giving something to them as their bread earner is no more ! Let us
sincerely think over this and not just throw money just because the church
wants it. One sunday's collection goes to caritas but till today I do not know
what is done with the money. We have no obligation to look after foreigners who
have got aids. The caritas of Goa may give a big explanation which my small
mind will not accept.

A slight correction on my previous posting on this subject:

I said
"One must commend BEST and the city of Bombay for providing interrupted power
supply to such a large
city. Can we ever expect that to happen in Goa?"

It should have read 'uninterrupted power supply'! The Goa Electricity
Department is already doing a great job
of interrupting the power supply ever so often!

I believe that Goa needs to hand over the chores of the Electricity Department
to entities like BEST or BSES,
from Mumbai.

*Reexamine the Exam System in India*
In making Class X exams optional, the HRD Minister has taken us a step in
the right direction. But a lot more is needed, especially in Goa. We need
the school system itself examined.

40% of the 14.5 lakh population in Goa is today from other parts of India.

Talking Photo  We called it 'Masal-pollo'

Yes, those day, eating masal-pollo was not within our reach.
It was costing 30p.
Also, it had to be eaten in style.
I mean with fork and spoon.

Forks n Spoons on a eating table?
I must have used it for the first time in my life at a UDPI eating house.

It was also available  at  Bombay Cafe, old station Road, Margao Goa etc

Now, I don't care, I just use my hands and it gives me more pleasure eating
that way.

Patoll-Bhaji or Suki-Bhaji costing just 15p which also included one unddo
or paum (loaf of bread).
The same bhaji now Rs.10 and pay Rs.3 extra  for paum.
I prefer 'Puris' to Paum - 'Puri-Bhaji'

Where as this 'Masal-Pollo' now popularly known as 'Masala Dosa'
costs Rs.18
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk20/3888263787/sizes/l/
 or
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk20/3888263787/

The two little containers you see there in the plate are of 'Chetney' and
'Sambar'.
We only had white Chetney at that time. I ate without it.

The 'gorom-gorom' Cha (tea) you see there,  is costing Rs.5
It was then, just 5p.

I still see some people pouring the tea in the saucer and drink in from
there. I think this is to cool the tea as some people (like me)  not use to
take it
while very hot. I usually ask for another empty cup or a glass to cool it..

The High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) do not have any electronic chip as
reported in the press, it is obvious therefore that the term ‘High Security’ is
a misnomer. Although the government states it is being implemented for curbing
stolen cars from being used to commit criminal activities, it has absolutely no
advantage over normal registration plates used all these years as per
specifications by the Motor Vehicle Act, if not the latter being of superior
quality and greater durability. Nor do they have any advantage in tracking a
vehicle if stolen. Let the government spell out how it will track a stolen
vehicle. This is a mockery of security launched by the government. Twisting
facts and feeding it to the public is a politician’s work but not at the cost
of State and public security. In an era where biologists can tag fish, birds
and wild animals with electronic chips and track them individually, and cars
abroad tracked by using a chip or Global Positioning System, our government
presumes everybody can be fooled all the time. This is nothing but a money
making SCAM at the cost of security. These plates are not even worth the price
of the normal ones in the market.

My dear Santoshbab,

I do not know WHY you have wasted your time and wrote to Herman.

Herman has NO power over Salazar Fred.

Salazar Fred has been the Tin-Pot dick-tater on GoaNet for a long time.

I have said this before and I will say it again.

Herman has NO control over GoaNet. If he had, he would have noticed that
Fred constantly violates GoaNet rules at will.
He would have told him to get lost from moderation - a long time ago.

As I have written many a time, the Salazars of this world are intolerant of
ideologies which are NOT in keeping with their agenda.

So please, IF you plan to write to Herman about GoaNet, again - Please do
not copy me.

Please be aware that Herman (too) is hypersensitive to criticism.

He is welcome to display that again.

Are there no accidents / deaths/ ugly scenes/ fights and illtreatment in
families due to alcohol consumption in Goa?

For me the answer is YES. And I definately find too many liquor shops in Goa
too..some of them definately needs to be closed down. Unless we love to
have more liquor shops than a clinic or school.

Goans, do you agree? OR you love to get a 'kick' on every step you take on the
road!

Data/statistics do reveal that Kerala is no.1 in terms of alcohol consumption.
Let them be. Atleast in this field lets not compete. Lets be last. Haha, I
heard someone saying mario is dreamer/joker/tee-totaller. yes true. Why not. Is
there no other way to live and earn than to sell excess alcohol. yes yes it
starts with one peg then 2 then cigrattes, drugs, sex, rape, murder,
suicide.

ENOUGH, STOP IT!

Kerala Church Demands Closure Of Liquor Shops On Major Roads

By SAR NEWS

KOCHI, Kerala (SARNEWS) -- The Kerala Catholic Bishops have urged the
communists-led state government to close down all liquor shops on the
highways and busy roads, in accordance with a directive issued in this
regard by the Central government.

In a statement September 5, the Kerala Catholic Bishops? Council, the
premier representative body of a sizeable Catholic Christian community
in Kerala, stated that studies conducted by state government agencies
had found that drunken driving was the main reason for the increased
rate of accidents in the state.

Instead of organising effective anti-liquor campaigns, the Left
Democratic Front government, with the single motive of increasing tax
revenue through sale of liquor, was causing great harm to society by
sanctioning to more such shops, the bishops said.

?This must stop immediately,? demanded the statement issued by KCBC
president Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil and other office-bearers.

Taxes from liquor sales have swelled the state coffers by rupees 193
crore this fiscal alone (from Rs. 1,163 crore in the last financial
year to Rs 1,356 crore).

According to the figures provided by the state planning board, a
whopping 27,972 road accidents were recorded in 2008 in which 2,868
lost their lives and as many as 32,934 people were injured or maimed

I love the above quote, Valmiki.

I meant to reply to your original article but never got the time.
I will contribute the following before I miss the opportunity.

***Dear Mervyn,
I do not know you, but I would like to know whether you can give me any
names of people hailing from Calangute, who have been in any place where you
have been, particularly priests, physicians, lawyers, teachers, businessmen,
bankers...
I am writing a book on Calangute Village. It would be helpful. If you could
contact any other person, who could send me the data through e-mail, I would
be very grateful. Thanks a lot! May God bless you!

Fr.Dr.Ivo da C.Souza (Holy Spirit Church, Margao, Goa 403601, India)

in Turks & Caicos Islands, the British governor's wife was a Goan from
Dar-es-Salaam.

The Goan lady above is a relative of ours. Her dad owned the biggest music
store in Tanzania. As far as Caribbean countries are concerned, Canadian
companies
own/run hotels in every one of the islands and I can guarantee you that
there are Canadian
hotel staff of Goan origin in every one of those island nations, including
Cuba. Two years ago,
while in Belize, I bumped into another Dar-es-Salaam born Goan who was
working in the tourist

industry there. Here is a picture:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45002...@n00/941976727/sizes/l/in/set-72157601083476595/

Leaving the Caribbean and moving to Africa, be assured that Goans have lived
or are
living in all 53 countries. In every African country where the Jesuits and
more recently, the
Selisians operate, rest assured that there are either some Goan priests or
nuns, or both.

The person who runs the website for Goans from Tanzania, was at one time
running it from

Ulan Bator, Mongolia, where he was stationed on an IT contract.

I also know a Goan here in Toronto who had a Tanzanian Govt scholarship to
study in what
is either the Czech Republic or Slovenia today. If he was studying in
Slovenia, for sure he
spent some time across the border in the birthplace of Pilsner :-) I think
he is on Goanet

but has so far kept quiet on this matter.

As for the ex-Soviet republics, while working for a military contractor in
Tanzania, I have spent
some time in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and Kiev, Ukraine. Believe me, there were
fluent Russian
speakers from the Indian Air Force being trained in both those cities. I
would expect at least

a handful on Goans in that group.

As Vivian has pointed out, there have been Goans in Afghanistan. More
recently, one born in
Dar-es-salaam who was on contract with the US Army. That avenue would open
opportunities
for Goans to live in many of the other ex-Soviet republics that now host
bases for the US armed

forces.

Lastly, I know two Goan teachers who worked in Nepal with the late Kings
family/relatives.
They told me astounding stories of incest in the former royal family and of
them (the teachers)
having to leave the room, heads bowed down and backwards, when any royal was
present.

As for Bhutan, that would be a real royal challenge.
I would love to hear of a story of a Goan who has lived there.

All in all, this is not a bad achievement for a bunch of coastal people with
a little education..

Hi,
You are absolutely correct to say that the lower ranks will be the
sacrificial goat.

The only solution is to bring the hierarchy to book like in other parts of
the world, for example:
http://oneworldsee.org/Parliamentary-Inquiry-Commission-Finds-Police-Reports-Unsatisfactory
.

The question is. Who will bell the cat?
Will the Indian Montrees agree to this type of questioning, wherby they will
be found guilty?
Caj.

Samir,Booking the Electricity Department will not help. As I had mentioned
in one of my previous posts, the person who will get suspended will either be
the poor lineman or the Junior Engineer, in chargeof that area. We need
accountability at the political level.

[Goanet] Catholics and Universal Health Care

Catholics and Universal Health Care

This is a tough one for Catholics. Most of my friends are a bit
frightened by the idea of universal health care, There is a lot of
talking going on in Washington, a lot of heated debate, but little
light. There are so many different plans that even some Congressman do
not seem to be able to tell us what the other Congressmen know or
think about the subject. On top of that, many of these same friends
are on the rather conservative side of the political spectrum, so they
do not want the government to play any role in health care. Period.

That sets up a conundrum, because the United States Catholic bishops
have recently written a Pastoral letter to all Catholics, asking them
to contact their Congressmen asking them to support a bill that will
provide universal health care.

Here is what the bishop Murphy, writing on behalf of all the bishops,
wrote: “On behalf of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
(USCCB), I write to outline our policy priorities and to express hope
that the serious efforts of the Congressional committees will bring
genuine life-affirming reform to the nation’s health care system. The
USCCB looks forward to working with you to reform health care
successfully in a manner that offers accessible, affordable and
quality health care that protects and respects the life and dignity of
all people from conception until natural death.

For decades, the Catholic bishops of the United States have been and
continue to be consistent advocates for comprehensive health care
reform that leads to health care for all, including the weakest and
most vulnerable…… Reform efforts must begin with the principle that
decent health care is not a privilege, but a right and a requirement
to protect the life and dignity of every person. All people need and
should have access to comprehensive, quality health care that they can
afford, and it should not depend on their stage of life, where or
whether they or their parents work, how much they earn, where they
live, or where they were born.”

These words can be quite a shock to a conservative Catholic who has
been brought up on the belief that government assistance and handouts
are not good for Americans. This is not something new. It was a shock
when Franklin Roosevelt introduced Social Security payments, signing
the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935. Conservatives shouted:
“This is socialism.” It was another shock to the conservative Catholic
when, on July 30, 1965. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare
and Medicaid into law. Many conservatives yelled, “Foul. This is
socialistic.” Of course that was then and now is now, and the only
yelling would be if some government official tried to take away either
social security or Medicare/Medicaid.

So, let us Catholics put our trust in the collective wisdom of the
bishops, and follow their lead in encouraging our representatives in
Washington to provide health care for every American. It may take a
bit of gulping, but we’ll get over it when we see our poorer
neighbours getting health care they could never have afforded before.

The ongoing discussion
[Goanet] THE FORGOTTEN TRIBE – MHAR

Very interesting topic Mar-gao.

Which reminds of ‘MAR’ tradition we used to observe on 23rd of June every year
 (A day before Sao Joao).

We used to make a ‘Mar’ sort of a old man filled with dry straw with long
trouser, long sleeve shirt, a hat, shoes and a mask (usually put a
cigarette/pipe in his mouth)  Seated on a chair with two long bamboo sticks
fitted underneath  which served as
4 handles to lift by two people one in front and the other at the back of the
chair.
We used to cry him house to house or door to door..starting from 3pm.

Each one of us carried a  medium size ‘Madda piddo’  (Stalk of Coconut Leaf)
As soon as we finish saying KU-KU-KU then we all strike it hard on the ground
almost all in one go.

This is how it goes…

MAR RE ZUD RE, KU KU KU

AMGHE MAR DERANTULO
TUMGHE MAR KERAMTULE, KU-KU-KU

I think the below line was added subsequently..

CHAR ANN’ DIL BHOGOR ALNA MUNTTA DERANTULO
(It will not move out of your doorway unless you give 25 paise)

Then there was another…
OILE BHANDARI CHUDDIT POLEM
XEMPDDE DORIT ODDIT HADDLEM
JAKI BHAIL KIT MULLITU  ou
MAR-ACHIM BOTT MOLLITU,  KU-KU-KU

People gave us money usually 10p, 15p, 20p and very few gave 25p or char anne.

End of the day, later in the night we burn the Mar.

Does anybody remember this?
Please come back and say something.

I also call upon Alfred, Selma, EddieV, S Borges, I Dantas, Seb dc, Fausto,
Silviano, Pandu Lampiao, George, Bernad,  Ivo, Lapitt, Loyola, Salus,Valmiki,
Cajetan,  Freddy, Amstrong, Borg, Wilson, Godfrey etc etc
(assuming you all from S Goa).

One may also ask their elders or parents about the MAR tradition as describe
above.

Thank you for your support.

Notes:
- It could be a tradition  only in salcette or south goa
- Don’t know the significance of Mar tradition on 23rd June. I am sure there
must
be something to go with the date and the Mar
- Mar could mean Spirit or oman.
- ZUD may have come from ZUDEV
- Derantulo may mean 'local', Kerantulo may mean from outside village
- Instead of MAR some may just say JUDEV tradition

Now, after all this, you may start to wonder whether JoeGoaUk is really 63 or
73?
Most people lie about their ages anyway.
Fyi, JGU turns 63 next month 10

I love the above quote, Valmiki.

I meant to reply to your original article but never got the time.
I will contribute the following before I miss the opportunity.

> in Turks & Caicos Islands, the British governor's wife was a Goan from
> Dar-es-Salaam.

The Goan lady above is a relative of ours. Her dad owned the biggest music
store in Tanzania. As far as Caribbean countries are concerned, Canadian
companies
own/run hotels in every one of the islands and I can guarantee you that there
are Canadian
hotel staff of Goan origin in every one of those island nations, including
Cuba. Two years ago,
while in Belize, I bumped into another Dar-es-Salaam born Goan who was working
in the tourist
industry there. Here is a picture:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45002...@n00/941976727/sizes/l/in/set-72157601083476595/

Leaving the Caribbean and moving to Africa, be assured that Goans have lived or
are
living in all 53 countries. In every African country where the Jesuits and more
recently, the
Selisians operate, rest assured that there are either some Goan priests or
nuns, or both.

If he was studying in Slovenia,
for sure he
spent some time across the border in the birthplace of Pilsner :-)  I think he
is on Goanet
but has so far kept quiet on this matter.

As for the ex-Soviet republics, while working for a military contractor in
Tanzania, I have spent
some time in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and Kiev, Ukraine. Believe me, there were
fluent Russian

Subject: Re: [Goanet] Goanet] Goa Electricity Dept responsible for the
death of Joaquim 55 and his Son 20?

Mr. Naguesh,

You are very much accurate in your assertion, you will find a lot of
bees, where there is nectar, no nectar and you'll see bees just
whizzing past. Only when there is an opportunity to make big bucks our
politicians will fall over themselves, pretending to do something for
the people, while all the time they are only interested in one thing,
how much they can make out of the deal ?

I was made aware by a very prominent member of this forum that, the
Japanese had offered to upgrade our sewerage system free of cost, but
since there wouldn't be any cuts, the offer was not taken up by our
elite politicians. This is the state of Goan politics.

While talking about the sad, unfortunate and the untimely demise of the
father and son, the higher authorities of the electricity department
should be heavily penalised. It is their responsibility to replace the
cables and other equipment as per the "life time" of the equipment.
With the fatalities increasing due to electrocution the authorities
should make sure that precautionary measures are taken in time.

I remember a similar incident in my village a good many years ago,
during the down pour of heavy rains a coconut tree had fallen over the
cables and a pole had snapped into two, a couple of cables broken and
the rest were lying on the ground, we did not realize that the power
supply had done the "Hudini act" at that precise moment, we all thought
that with the snapping of the wire the fuses must have blown off, we
were more than ten of us walking all over the wires clearing the coconut
trees, taking the coconuts, tender coconuts, the "morond" and removed
the portion of the tree, from over the wires, it might have taken us
more than an hour to finish and we got back to continuing our card game,
which we were playing prior to the incident, in the balcony of a house
close by, it was not even ten minutes, when all of a sudden, we heard
shrieks all around, we all dropped our cards and ran and the scenario,
when I think of it even today, sends chills down my spine, five pigs lay
stuck to the live wires dead, one can imagine what would have happened,
if the power had come on, while more than ten of us were all over the
wires. Thank God it was only the pigs. I have in no way exaggerated the
situation, there is another fortunate member of that group, very much
alive and active on this forum today.

The electricity officials had no answers as to why the fuses had not
blown off, while some wires had broken off and the rest tangled all
over. These are the safety measures taken by the authorities, this
incident had happened more than15 years ago and I see that nothing has
changed since then, two more innocent budding lives lost to the
lackluster attitude of our authorities. Compensation will help the
family, but will it bring back their loved ones ?

Why is our Government not doing anything about it ? There was a buzz,
that underground cabling was being given a thought, probably that too
must be gasping for a breath of "cut".

Goans in Goa face an identity crisis More in:

   - Goa
   - Migration
   - Society

   By:
Village Tinto

40% of the 14.5 lakh population in Goa is today from other parts of India.
Goa is thus undergoing a major change in its demography raising concerns of
the preservation of the "Goan Identity".

According to a news
report,
while Goans protested the influx of migrants from other states after Goa's
liberation, today there is no such agitation. This is because Goans realise
that the development of the state depends on the migrants who are main
labour force in the state.

The situation is compounded as many Goans chose to leave the state for other
cities in India or migrate overseas leaving a vaccum in Goa. This vaccum is
then filled by persons from other Indian states.

As they have become a part of the Goan community, serving it in many ways we
should consider them as "New Goans", says the writer.

But the question raised in the end is how do Goans as a community, who in a
few years will see themselves become the minority in the state, protect
their own identity and culture?

Dear Herman,

Frederick Noronha has claimed in the past that he is no longer the
moderator of Goanet. It is hard for me and others to take him at his
word. You obviously know the truth. His objectivity and ability to
abide by the Goanet rules, even as an unmoderated contributor to
Goanet have come under increasing suspicion, as far as several of us
regular contributors to Goanet are concerned. I would therefore like
to request you to take away his privileges as a moderator, and let him
be a regular contributor like the rest of us, subject to moderation by
the reasonably impartial and rule-abiding moderators Viviana and

At this juncture, where the HSRPs have come for massive flak from all
quarters in Goa, we would like to reproduce a relative item from the Party's
Road Map for Goa for your kind information. Incidentally, it was
published/released on August 20, 2005.

Excerpts:

Chapter VII - Public Transport & R.T.O.
1. Standardization of vehicle number plates:
It is sad to note that the State of Goa has felt it best to leave the owners
of the vehicles to determine what type of number plates they want for their
vehicles. At times we see designer number plates with complicated style of
numbering which is at most, difficult to even decipher. This Party believes
that the State of Goa needs to have uniform standard for the vehicle number
plate design, font and size for letters and numbers. There is need to
differentiate vehicles from private, public, goods, passenger, government,
utility vehicles such as police, ambulance etc. Once the decision is arrived
at on the above requirement, generous time period and publicity shall be
given before the cut off date comes into force to effect the change.
Thereafter, violations and/or non compliance of the requirement shall be
stringently penalized.

Albert writes:- Taken from Proverbs:- Learn what i teach you my son and never
orget what I tell you to do. Listen to what is wise and try to understand it.
Beg for knowledge plead for insight. Look for it as hard as you would look for
silver and gold. if you do you will know what it means to fear the Lord and you
will suceed in learning about God. It is Lord who gives you wisdom. From Him
comes knowledge, and understanding. He provides help and protection for those
who are righteous and honest. He protects those who treat others fairly and
guards those who are devoted to him. If you listen to me you will know what is
right just and fair. You will know what you should do .You will become wise and
your knowledge will give you pleasure. Your insight and understanding will
protect you and prevent you from doing the wrong things.

[Goanet] Length of the road – Monday-muse (7 Sept’09)

MONDAY MUSE (7 September 2009)
Length of the Road

A young but earnest student approached a Zen master with a preliminary query,
"If I work very hard and with diligence how long will it take for me to learn
Zen." The Master immediately replied, "Ten years."

The student then said, "But what if I work very, very hard and really apply
myself to learn fast -- How long then?" Replied the Master, "twenty years."
"But, if I really, really work at it. How long then?" the student persisted.
"Thirty years," replied the Master.

"But, I do not understand," said the disappointed student. "At each time that I
say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer. Why do you say that?"
Replied the Master," When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye
on the path."

So often, when we seek to learn something, we keep worrying about ‘when’ we
would ‘reach’ the destination, instead of focusing on the purpose of the trip.
The approach to learning needs an attitude of patience. Time, it is said, seems
to fly slower to the one whose main occupation is to watch its flight.

More importantly, when we are seized by the length of the road we tend to let
go of the exciting experiences during the journey of learning. We subject
ourselves to an additional load on our mind which results in the creation of
unnecessary stress that further clouds our visibility on the learning curve. It
is prudent to ponder on ‘how’ rather than on ‘when’.

To BE BETTER at learning sans the load,
May we never mind the length of the road!
