[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: 'The Denationalisation of Goans'... some insights (Nishtha Desai, Lusotopie)
The Denationalisation of Goans An Insight into the Construction of Cultural Identity * Nishtha DESAI, Lusotopie 2000 : 469-476 Tristao de Braganza Cunha (1891-1958) [1], henceforth referred to as Cunha, authored an essay, *The Denationalization of Goans*, published in 1944 as a booklet[2]. This essay gives a sharp critique of the psychological dominance of Portuguese culture over the educated people of Goa. It gives an insight into the construction of identities in the context of Portuguese colonial rule from the standpoint of an Indian nationalist. This is the subject matter of this presentation. Cunha, constructed a thesis of denationalisation, identifying it as the main obstacle for the development of nationalism in Goa. As a result of this essay, the term denationalisation entered the vocabulary of almost every freedom fighter in Goa. THE USE OF THE TERM DENATIONALISATION It is not clear how Cunha came to use the term denationalisation. It was not a popularly used term, but one has come across being used in two different ways. Keshab Chandra Sen and Aurobindo Ghose have used the term to describe the efforts of the British to alienate the Indian people from their own culture[3]. The Portuguese state used it to denote those who expressed any dissent against it. In 1914, arguing in favour of imparting primary education in the mother-tongue, Konkani, rather than Portuguese, Menezes Braganza asserted that it was the perceived danger of denationalisation with which Portuguese officialdom was so preoccupied, which prevented it from encouraging Konkani [4]. In the satyagraha of 1955 hundreds of Indians marched into Goa to demonstrate against the artificiality of the border separating Goa from India. Salazar referred to the Goans who took part in this action as denationalised Goans[5]. One cannot say whether Cunha's use of the term was inspired by earlier nationalists or whether he adopted its usage in a paradoxical mannerreacting to the Portuguese officialdom's usage of it. A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE DENATIONALISATION OF GOANS At the outset it is worth noting that Cunha's discourse in general, and his thesis of the denationalisation of Goans in particular are a product of the divided society in which he lived and attempted to generate national consciousness. He tried to unite the people by appealing to their identity as Indians. His discourse is meaningful because it addresses the fact of the communal divide without attempting to hide its existence. According to Cunha, Hindus and Catholics were both denationalised, however because of the use of the Church by the Portuguese state the denationalisation of the Catholic Goans was more pronounced. Cunha argues that the Portuguese state had achieved the alienation of the people from their motherland through various agencies such as the Portuguese system of education, the press which was under the rigid control of the state and the Church which functioned as an arm of the Portuguese state. A major premise in Cunha's essay was that Goans had lost their Indianness and their pride of race. National consciousness was absent. In place of their own culture the people of Goa, particularly the Catholic elite, had adopted a culture that was imitative of the West. The process of denationalisation had reduced Goans to being strangers in their own land[6]. He identified the denationalisation of Goans as the main obstacle for the development of nationalism in Goa. He asserted that the Portuguese created myths which dominated the historiography of their rule over Goa. The result of this was that Goans who had received Portuguese education grew up believing Afonso de Albuquerque to be tolerant and in favour of racial integration, and nurtured the belief that Francis Xavier had effected conversions miraculously. Portuguese historiography chose to ignore the fact that the former was responsible for the massacre of thousands of Muslims, while the latter had played a vital role in introducing the inquisition in Goa. Anything pertaining to India was excluded from the curriculum. Fed on myths such as these most Goans were in awe of the Portuguese. Denationalised Goans had lost their national dignity, he argued. They had lost their traditional culture and were deprived of the use of their mother-tongue, Konkani. They held the belief that by aping the culture of the rulers, their status was superior to their fellow countrymen. The Denationalisation of Goans is often seen as an indictment of Catholic Goans. This is not true. Highlighting the nexus between the church and the state Cunha asserts : We do not fight religion but we expose the exploitation of religion for the benefit of the foreign rulers and to the disadvantage of India's unity [7]. Cunha remarks that, more than any other imperialist rulers, the Portuguese used religion as a weapon of political exploitation, and urges the Goan Catholic, to be conscious of and think

Re: [Goanet] Will India EVER be a world power
After huffing and puffing and wasting more bandwidth Mario is yet to provide the date, time and location in Hyderabad where this speech was delivered by President Kalam. Nevertheless it appears the bogus author of this commentary had Mario in mind when he spoke and wrote, rather wrote and then spoke thus: Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. [1] As demonstrated several times, Mario makes bogus statements and spends a lifetime trying to prove them right instead of withdrawing them. RKN on Facebook is one such recent allegation. - B [1] http://www.uttishthata.org/2007/07/06/a-letter-to-every-indian-apj/ -Original Message- From: Mario Goveia When I posted a speech made earlier this year in Hyderabad by Abdul Kalam asking Indians to improve their civic sense, which was widely circulated in India but not widely reported abroad, there were some on Goanet who took umbrage and insinuated that the speech was a fraud, which was a shocking response to this rare call to Indians by a respected national leader. Date: Thu, 10 Sep 2009 00:37:59 -0400 From: Bosco D bos...@canada.com #1) Please advise the date, time and location in Hyderabad where this speech was delivered. #2) If this was a speech, why does the webpage of the link you provided state A Letter to Every Indian - APJ Abdul Kalam [1] #3) Surely you know the difference between a letter and a speech. Mario responds: Bosco is absolutely right. I used letter and speech interchangeability. However, I wonder if he knows that THE CONTENTS of a widely circulated open letter to the country by an ex-President is tantamount to a speech.
[Goanet] MARATHA-PORTUGUESE WARS TO CONTROL BOMBAY-VASAI REGION
In the medieval period, Vasai (also known as bassein) along with the neighbouring Island of Salsette and the seven islands of Bombay was under the rule of the Sultans of Gujarat till 1534. The Portuguese with their naval power and their crusading valor were unquestioned masters of the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese acquired these regions from Sultan Bahadur Shah through a treaty and later in 1661 gave away the seven islands of Mumbai to the British King Charles II as dowry when the Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza was married to him. After nearly 200 years of Portuguese control, Vasai and Salsette were conquered by the Marathas in 1739 who in turn relinquished them to the English East India Company in 1818. *The Marathas are natives of Pune, Nashik, Sangli, Kolhapur, Satara, Ahmednagar and Solapur districts. Out of the 9 crore population of Maharashtra 34% population consists of Marathas. The Marathas dominate the political arena in Maharashtra.* *Marathas have dominated the state politics of Maharashtra since its inception in 1960. The first Chief Minister of Maharashtra was a Maratha ( Yashwantrao Chavan). Since then, Maharashtra has witnessed heavy presence of Maratha community and having more than 40% of their members in the ministry, local municipal commissions, police force, panchayats, etc. The natives of konkan (thane, bombay, raigad, ratnagiri, sindhudurg districts) have been demanding the creation of konkan state to free themselves from the clutches of the Marathas but all in vain. The Marathas will never give up konkan. At present the natives of konkan are at loggerheads with the maratha politicians who have cleared 64 SEZs in konkan without consulting them. * In February 1739, Chimaji Appa, the Maratha ruler Bajirao Peshwa’s younger brother, attacked Bassien Fort (The Vasai fort or Bassein fort, is a sea-facing fort built by the Portuguese to protect their township of Vasai). He first occupied the Versova, Dharavi and blockaded Bassein Creek. The Portuguese sought help from the British in Bombay but the British instead sent ammunition and three of their gunners to assist the Marathas. The Marathas were encouraged when they managed to kill the brave Portuguese commandant, Sylveria de Menezes. They then laid 12 mines, two of which exploded causing a breach in the Vasai fort wall. When they mounted an assault on the fort, a third mine exploded killing hundreds of Maratha warriors. The Portuguese kept up their defenses by throwing hand grenades and throwing huge stones from mortars, causing havoc among the Marathas. The Marathas finally exploded more mines in the breached wall causing the tower of St. Sebastian to collapse. The Marathas secured a position in the fort from where the Portuguese could not longer defend the fort. The Marathas casualty was about 12,000 killed or wounded while the Portuguese casualty was about 800 killed or wounded, among those killed on the Portuguese side were General Martinho da Sylveira, General Pedro de Mello and Lt.-Colonel Joo Malhio. After a desperate resistance on 16 May 1739 the Portuguese signed surrender. The treaty of surrender stipulated that all the garrison would be allowed to march out of town with full honors of war. Those who wanted to leave had 8 days to take all their movable property and move out. The Portuguese lost eight cities, four chief ports, twenty fortress, two fortified hills, the island of Salsette with the city and the fortress of Thana, Illa das Vaccas – (Island of Arnala), the island of Caranja, and 340 villages. On 19th May 1739, Captain Caetano de Souza Pereira capitulated and handed over the Court of Bassein. They left Bassein on 23 May 1739. The churches and almost all the buildings from Vasai fort were destroyed and looted by the Marathas. The church bells were paraded, carried off on elephant backs as victory souvenirs. One church bell was carried to and located at Naroshankar Temple on the banks of Godavari river in Nasik, Panchavati area. The other church bell is located at Ashta-Vinayaka temple in Ballaleshwar in Sudhagad, district Raigad. The Maratha ruler Madhavrao Peshwa offered free land grants to Hindus who would settle in Bassein and imposed a tax system to encourage purification/conversion of Christians back into Hinduism. After 205 years of uninterrupted Portuguese rule, Bassein was progressively neglected, and the neighboring English Bombay assumed importance in trade and commerce. Today's Vasai-Virar area has rapidly changed and starting in the 1980's, the change is brought about by a large influx of people due to availability of more affordable housing than in Mumbai ( Bombay ). For several centuries people of Vasai depended on agriculture, everything revolved around agriculture. Since the early 1980's, people's land in areas such as Virar, Nala-Sopara, Vasai were either taken forcibly from them or forced to sell their lands at a very cheap price through intimidation and violence by thugs and

That's true! Noel is Lambert Mascarenhas' son-in-law. A very nice and down-to-earth guy, whom I met just the other day, playing a prominent host's role at the launch of Mr Mascarenhas' book. Noel was very popular in the football and business circuits. Despite his affluence and political clout (his mum was one of Goa's early MLAs), he retained his friendly and simple style. His untimely death came as a surprise, if not a shock, to many here, and a caller rang up from North America to enquire about the news! Re: [Goanet] Goa Melbournians
My dear Bernado Thank you for your kind words. It would be great to see one Goan organisation rather than 3.5 that are presently operating in Melbourne. Melbourne has around circa 12,000 Goans and of late we have had young Goans Studying in our universities whom I have met in our last World Goa Day 2009. The best thing that we can do is to stop being self appointed Auditors. If only Goans can unite wherever we are, then only some progress can be achieved. Many of us lack commonsense and education unfortunately does not give us that. We Goans should make an attempt to remove ouselves from the revolving door syndrome and cease from those knee jerk reactions. We need to practice Christ rather than just attend Masses to clear our guilt trips. I believe we have three tier Goans - Goans from Goa, Goans from Mumbai/Pakistan and Goans from Africa. Goan organisations should not have hierarchy as having one impedes the purpose for which an organisation has been formed. There should be A position of just a Chairperson and others should be just committee members. If we try this we can successful. Nosso povo não sabe o que eles querem. Estamos muito confuso e estão ocupados fofocando em festas particulares Um abraco Oscar C. Lobo.

[Goanet] NEWS/VIEWS: Tony 'Kukuruku Carr passes away in Malad, Mumbai (Goanet summaries by Selma Carvalho)
Goanet highlights by Selma Carvalho The Goan daily Herald surprisingly carried a weak article which was a full-frontal attack on Darwinian evolution. Does a newspaper bear a responsibility for the type of information it puts out? Does it indeed have to inevitably and eventually chose the sort of platforms it propagates? Is information which is clearly regressive in thought as insidious as the propaganda of the HJS, a rightwing organization in Goa? The Herald must invoke its conscious and answer these questions candidly to itself. Here is the article in question: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/183154.html “Konkani, where are you?” asks Samir Kelekar in an article which first appeared on the Goan daily, Herald. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/183235.html Those of you with a bit of mileage will remember that classic Konkani song, Kukuruku. Tony Carr the singer of that famous tune passed away this week in Malad, Bombay. JoeGoaUK keeps us informed: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/183237.html For many Goans traveling through Bombay in the early part of the 20th century, the Bombay coor or Kudd played an integral part in providing them shelter. Here a little known study conducted on the Goan kudd in Bombay is highlighted. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-September/183218.html Sandeep Heble once again takes on the noble task of upholding Goa’s freedom of speech and expression which in recent weeks has come under attack not just from extreme right wing organizations which are becoming embedded in Goa but from the government itself. (2) Blow away a lot of houses along with households without the show of mercy. (3) Shake the earth, crack it open and devour entire cities, constituencies and polling booths. Nothing of the above has happened and therefore it can be surmised that the winds of change are only awaited, just like the Biblical World of the past awaiting the arrival of the SAVIOR. Why nothing like this is happening is because the winds of change are being purchased, prematurely, and shelved by those who do not want these to rock their nice little and big boats and/or unsettle their nice little cozy cuckoo nests they have built for themselves. For winds of change to start blowing, there cannot be too many lows (pressure drops) spread out to cancel one another (as is happening in Goa for a long time). The low must be just one deep solid low, with all small time lows merged into one. Then and only then it will move with the desired fury and devastation. If one thinks that the goliaths are going to take it lying down with all the unscrupulous crores at their disposal, than one must think again. You want to see the winds of change? Fine. However, it is tiring and a waste of time, really, to read such nicely written - emotion packed articles, one better than the other, written for writing sake. Goa needs action fast and Goans need to identify themselves with the small fires that are already burning or throw a bucket of water to put them out of their misery if these are worthless. And should Goans find that there is a vacuum with no worthwhile fires burning, then it is time to start your very own fire de NOVO and stoke it with all your power and might to make it spread out. [Goanet] GOA SUDHAROP: Youth seminar (Sept 8, 2009) report
In connection with its YEAR OF THE YOUTH theme, Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc. USA – a voluntary organization and the NSS Unit of Vidya Vikas Mandal’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce Economics jointly organized a seminar for college students from South Goa on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. at Kare Hall, G. R. Kare College of Law, Comba, Margao. The theme of the seminar was “You...th are the Solution”. Mr. Ibonio M. B. D’Souza, Goa Representative, Goa Sudharop, delivered the welcome address and briefed the audience about the theme of the seminar. The Chief Guest, Mr. R. G. Kare, industrialist and President, Vidya Vikas Mandal, could not attend the inaugural session, but his message was read out. Vice-Principal Ms. Lydia Menon gave the vote of thanks. The seminar was composed of five different sessions spread over the entire day. The first session - MIND YOUR MIND - was conducted by Brahmachari Prahlad of Chinmaya Mission, Margao. He spoke about how negative feelings like anger, jealousy, selfishness and hatred can corrode the minds of youngsters. In a session enlivened by interesting examples and interactions, he helped students understand how these emotions can be effectively managed. JUST SAY NO - A session on Addiction – was ably conducted by Dr. Priti Bakre, Psychiatrist, Sethu Centre for Child Development Family Guidance, Panaji. Dr. Bakre pointed out that many youngsters can and do say NO to addictive substances, such as tobacco, alcohol and drugs, but an equally large number decide to experiment. Of these, some are able to get out before they become dependent. But an unfortunate minority become substance abusers and develop dependence on the addictive substances. It is then very difficult to get these youngsters to kick the habit. The best way, therefore, is to say NO. INSIDE OUT (a session on Personal Community Values) by Fr. Simon Diniz, Principal, Rosary College of Arts Commerce, Navelim, was the last technical session of the morning. Fr. Diniz listed all the values and demonstrated the significance of these values in our lives. He urged the students to choose some values that they think are the most important, and to live these values every day of their lives. KNOW, GROW SHOW THE WAY (A session on Leadership) by Mr. Atul Shah, Director, VVM’s H.M.N. Gaunekar Institute of Management Training Research, Margao was a highly interactive, fun-filled session. Through a series of games and activities, Mr. Shah got students to realize the qualities of a leader – courage, initiative, persistence, integrity, commitment, confidence and the ability to make his/her team work towards a common goal. THE NEW “R”s OF EDUCATION was a session on Environment protection by Mr. Clinton Vaz, a young environmentalist from Margao. In this last session of the day, Mr. Vaz highlighted the various environment-related issues that Goa is facing today. He stressed the importance of the “Reduce, Re-use, Recycle” message and said more “R”s need to be added, such as “Refuse”. He enlightened students about small steps they can take at home to help tackle this problem. These relate to waste segregation, making compost pits, reusing materials, and so on. Approximately 150 students from Colleges in South Goa attended the seminar. Mr. Ganesh M. Daivajna, leading Chartered Accountant and Vice-President, Vidya Vikas Mandal was the Chief Guest at the valedictory programme and gave away the certificates. In his valedictory address, he stressed the need for students in general and NSS volunteers in particular, to develop civic sense and a spirit of community service. This is the need of the hour. Principal of Shree Damodar College of Commerce Economics, Dr. I. Bhanu Murthy, also spoke on the occasion. Thanks to the donors, supporters, volunteers and well-wishers of Goa Sudharop. Re: [Goanet] Healthcare Horror Stories
Date: Mon, 14 Sep 2009 20:55:45 -0700 (PDT) From: marlon menezes goa...@yahoo.com Mario is the only one who thinks the current medical system in the US is cheap and of good value... Mario responds: Once again, like Freddy Krueger in the horror movies, Marlon pops up out of the fog he exists in to throw his prevaricating verbal bombs on Goanet, as his comment above illustrates. Marlon wrote: The focus of any reform in the US should be to tackle the issue of high costs. I don't see how the current government options alleviating this problem. The focus should be streamlining medical records and processes, tort reform and reducing the grip of the American Medical ASSociation, to name a few. Mario responds: Here we see some glimmer of wheat among all the chaff. However, this self-proclaimed paragon of libertarianism and free market principles, who nevertheless thought it wise to help the most radical left winger in US history elected President by relentlessly attacking his opponents with a barrage of selected half-truths, doesn't think it is a priority that the 1,300 health insurance programs who control payments for most private medical services in the US are not allowed to freely compete nationwide as all other insurance programs have to do.
Re: [Goanet] Climate scientists confused by the climate
Mario wrote: What are the economic implications of the political demands that we turn only the western economies on their head because of something that its strongest proponents say only that most of it is very likely? Date: Mon, 14 Sep 2009 21:30:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com The field of Economics is orders of magnitude more speculative and uncertain than any branch of science. Scientists do not speak with an air of certainty. Only politicians and ideologues do. Mario responds: Thanks for making my point, that scientists do not speak with an air of certainty. Yet, on the global warming issue, left leaning ideologues in the US, the UN and elsewhere, like Al Gore and Rajendra Pachauri and the CEO of GE, Jeffrey Immelt, for example, are using what some scientists have said and are speaking with an air of certainty about what needs to be done about it. Politicians make economic determinations that are speculative and uncertain because they have no way to gage for certain the weighted aggregate actions and responses of entire populations to economic and other policy prescriptions. When scientists disagree the politicians also have no way to sort out what to do, and this is where ideologues step in and suggest solutions that will benefit them. This is the case with people like Al Gore and GE. Thus the politicians are likely to cause untold harm to the most productive sections of the world historically, the western economies, by insisting they roll back their economies to address ONLY THE MAN-MADE PORTION of global warming when there is a growing list of countries who have declined to participate, which now include Russia, China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, plus every other less developed country. These countries obviously believe that the Climate Change Lobby's policy suggestions will cause more harm to them than good. Santosh wrote: The quote says unprecedented in the past 1,300 years Here is the correct graph, which goes back to 200 A.D.: http://tinyurl.com/FactsRefutingMario Mario responds: Surely, as a scientist who does ...not speak with an air of certainty.. you are not suggesting that estimates of global temperatures going back to 200 AD have an air of certainty when scientists are still arguing about how to measure global temperatures in the 21st. Century: http://www.heartland.org/publications/environment%20climate/article/24556/GISS_Hansen_Caught_Doctoring_More_Data.html Santosh wrote: The global temperature in 2005 was the highest ever. In 2007 it was the second highest ever, as high as 1998 when it was anomalously high because of El Nino. Mario responds: While your selected facts are correct, here is the entire picture of recent years from all the major sources, showing that the recent trend lines are clearly inconveniently downwards, albeit slightly.. http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/images/stories/papers/monckton/monckton-global_warming_has_stopped.pdf My point is that the recent trend certainly cannot be honestly described, as the NASA report you posted did, as proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented. Santosh wrote: Latif has been completely misrepresented by the Newscientist journalist and the global warming deniers. Here is the relevant quote from his talk: QUOTE It may well happen that you enter a decade, or maybe even two, you know...when the temperature cools...alright?...relative to the present level. Alright? Unquote. Mario responds: Alright! Alright! Mojib-bhai. I get it, yaar. You, and Rajendra-bhai at the UN, have been saying for years that the earth WILL burn like hell if we don't turn only the western economies on their heads, and now you are saying that it MAY cool for a COUPLE OF DECADES? A COUPLE OF DECADES?! Good one, Mojib. So, what do you want us to do, hanh, Mojib-bhai? You may have heard by now that Russia, China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, plus every other less developed country are not going to do what your side wants, alright? Once again, let me get to my only point to Goanetters: Does it make sense for only the western countries to dial back their economies several decades in a speculative attempt to halt only THE MAN-MADE PORTION of what some scientists think is ADDING to global warming. Other scientists think that the MAN-MADE PORTION is so small that turning only the western economies on their heads, without Russia, China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, plus every other less developed country, is an ideological exercise in futility. I am still not sure, because I have still not bought one side of the debate hook, line and sinker like some people on Goanet. As the only voice on Goanet for reason, truth and peace, I am keeping an open mind. The rest of you can make up your own minds.

[Goanet] GT edit justifies casinos?
The front page edit A blow for the youth that was published in GT on 11 / 09 / 2009 was more of a terrorist attack on Goan society. Even the devil can quote the scriptures. This edit reflecta the extent of mental and spiritual deterioration that is setting in. It was something we had dreaded would one day manifest itself in Goan society. Are we claiming that our prophecy has come true? Definitely not. This is only a cause for alert as we have to maintain our sobriety among the growing ranks of boot-leggers, pimps and prostitutes emerging within our opinion makers. Going purely by the contents of the edit and leaving aside the ulterior motives, if any, this edit must be a cause for concern for every sober Goan as it reflects the extent of degeneration of the intellectual and emotional state of so called enlightened citizens in society. Our intelligensia has been rendered bankrupt. We have lost the ability to think beyond the boundaries of commerce and industry. When the mind collapses, it will not take much time for the body condition to also deteriorate rapidly. The arguments put forth to justify and rationalise the operation of casinos in the State only bring to mind a striking similarity to arguments presented by drug and alcohol promoters and abusers talking about the need for legalising social uses of certain chemical substances. We have fortunately had the God given opportunity to witness addiction and its mind games from close quarters. Those familiar with the disease of addiction will perhaps agree that addictive thought patterns remain the same while the substance or medium of abuse may differ. There is enough research done to prove that gambling is a vice and more than often develops into chronic addiction. History presents us with what the ill-effects of such vices has done to civilisations. It is said that Experience is the best teacher. Yet do we need any further proof? Mahatma Gandhi had said, only those women who have drunkards as their husbands know what havoc the drink devil works in homes that once were orderly and peace-giving. We are not at all surprised that Goan opinion makers and shapers who enjoyed total tolerance to alcohol abuse have now turned tolerant to gambling. If the argument about jobs holds true for casinos then why not for the 3000 strong sex-workers and thousands of others from Baina who were deprived of earning their livelihood some years ago? Did the author of this edit take up that issue of Baina so passionately as the so called righteous goans cheered, just as he now proclaims his support to so claimed 2500 strong youth employed in gambling dens which is nothing but sugar coated as 'casinos' in order to give it some shine and sophistication in comparison to the poor man's crude game called 'matka'. There are thousands of hungry stomachs earning from supplying logistics and weapons of destruction to terrorists and criminals, supplying adultrated food, producing fake currency, selling banned substances and so on, so is all this normal and fine? Those who warn about the ill effects of certain activities get dubbed by this edit as hypocrites, moralists and sanyasis? What are we trying to state? That we should not pass down to our youth the values and experiences, the fact that playing with fire has the likelihood of causing grievous burns? And suppose the casinos had not set shop in Goa and drug trade was impossible would these very youth not have found more decent employment in other avenues? Fortunately Goa is so tiny and let not this edit try to tell us the people who had gathered at Azad maidan are employees of casinos. Let it not tell us that no politicians and ministers were behind this rally. Let it also not tell us that even government servants, goons and anti-social elements from the constituency adjoining Panjim have not participated in this rally. Let it not tell us that we cannot distinguish between employees of casinos and trainees from training institutes. Let it not tell us that we cannot distinguish a Goan from a migrant. Let it not tell us that by and large it is mostly Goan youth that are employed in casinos. Let it also not tell us that the entire industry does not revolve around crime and ultimately destroys its victims and their families both socially and mentally. Let this edit not tell us that the ill-effects of this game is limited to the precincts of the casinos, on-shore or off-shore, and does not spill over into families and society. Let it not tell us that our youth exposed to such hostile environments are not being rendered vulnerable to be hired for criminal behaviour. Let it not tell us that stories of people who have suffered by gambling in casinos are not held back from publishing. The edit challenges persons who are clean to throw the first stone but in the process of taking a moral high ground has forgotten that this edit itself has taken to throwing stones at

[Goanet] Interview with Goan Star - Katty de Navelim
An interview with Goan Star - Katty de Navelim :::By Gasper Crasto, Kuwait::: Kuwait, Sept 2009: Mario Carneiro better known as Katty de Navelim is a Goan singer regularly seen on stage in Kuwait. Ex-President of popular tiatrists' fraternity - Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS), Katty has established himself amongst a horde of star performers as a singer and composer of immense calibre, wisdom and philosophy. Born and brought up in Navelim - Goa, Katty attended his primary education at Rosary High School, Navelim and later studied at St. Britto's High School, Mapusa. After his Diploma in Technical Education (Govt. of India) at Margao, he obtained his Public Works Department (PWD) license and took up a job. Presently in Kuwait, Katty works for the well known Arabi Holding Group as a Senior Irrigation and Mechanical Supervisor. From the time he set foot in Kuwait, Katty has always involved himself in social, cultural and sports activities for which he is quite popular among the Indian community. He has held posts of President (twice), Sports Secretary as well as General Secretary on various occasions with his hometown expatriate club Navelim Youth Centre, Kuwait. He has also held positions in the Managing Committee of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) as Sports Secretary for three years and as Registrar for two years. In an exclusive tête-à-tête with Gasper Crasto on the eve of yet another performance, Katty revealed some interesting facts about his life as a Konkani stage artiste and singer. How long have you been involved in singing? Katty: I started singing as a child while I was just in primary school. My talents were duly recognized when I participated in an All Goa Singing Competition held by the Cavellosim Parish Youth. I won 'first' prizes there in three different categories at the competition. First prize for my solo 'Xikop', first prize for a duo with Danny Boy (a song on Mother Vailankanni), and first prize for a trio with Danny Boy and Natty. This encouragement took me to sing at Kala Academy programs and even at All India Radio (AIR - Panaji) at a very young age. What was your first performance in a drama? Katty: My first performance was in a tiatr called 'Josephinacho Fuddar' staged at Aquem Baixo, Navelim by the Holy Cross club. I was around 8 years then. Soon after, I acted as a child artiste in 'Moladik Bentin', a drama by Danny Boy (Navelim) staged at All Goa Kala Academy Tiatr Festivals and I won the Best Child Artiste Award for my performance. Later, when the same drama was staged at Navelim, I was felicitated by the villagers at the hands of Shri M. Boyer - the undisputed icon of Goan stage. Tell us more about your early days? Katty: As a teenager, I sang in various dramas all over Salcette and few villages of Bardez. The songs included decent as well as comedy 'clowns'. My songs in Patrick Perry's dramas 'Ximiterichea Darant', 'Kazarache Ratri', etc, were very popular with the audience. I also sang in a drama directed by legendary Chinchinim actor Jepsis Hitler. Later I sang duos with Patrick Perry, our most famous being a song on 'Vailankanni Saibinn' and 'Chog-M'. I have also penned and directed my only Konkani tiatr titled 'Tuka Favo Naslem' which was performed at church feasts way back in 1977 at Assagao, Bardez and Tilamol, Quepem taluka. In sports, I participated in All-Goa under-15 Road Race at Panjim. I was also a formidable sprinter in relay and 100 meters races for inter-schools in Bardez. However, my favorite game during my younger days was table tennis. Who are the other directors that you have acted under? Katty: I have been in troupes of C.D'Silva, Patrick Dourado, etc, in professional dramas all over Goa. My performance in the lead role in Patrick Dourado's famous non-stop drama 'Bhavacho Cheddo' was quite commendable. It was also my debut in acting along with another Goan star actor Mario Menezes. What is the significance of your stage name? Katty: When I acted as a child I was called Bab Katty (Katty being my pet name). It was in Kuwait that I changed my name to Katty de Navelim to identify myself to my village and the place of my birth in Goa. When did you land up in Kuwait and which was your first performance? Katty: I landed in Kuwait in 1982. I have featured regularly on stage since 2001 - be it a Konkani drama or a musical show or Goa Day celebrations. Why was there such an enormous gap from the time you landed in Kuwait to your first performance? Katty: Yes, it took me almost 19 years in Kuwait to get back into my most favorite hobby i.e. singing on stage. When I quit dramas in Goa to go abroad, it was a time I was growing mature. The politics and spite that I saw among the artistes was not for me. I'd decided then that I would never get caught up again in such environment. Here in Kuwait, I was involved with our club Navelim Youth Centre in organizing dramas

[Goanet] Goan Konkani film - Poltodcho Munis- captivates Toronto Film Festival audience
Man beyond Bridge - Konkani film - Poltodcho Munis A Film Review by Silviano BarbosaToronto September 15, 2009 Based on Konkani Poet/Novelist Mahableshwar Sail’s story and under the magic touch of young Director Laxmikant Shetgaunkar, the Konkani film “Poltodcho Munis” can easily be classified as Goa’s “best Konkani” movie ever to captivate the world film audience. This movie has everything in it: best direction, a touching unconventional story, natural acting, attractive scenes, simple yet effective dialogues, down-to-earth characters, rural jungle terrain with a river running through it, and a typical Goan native population to bring out the volatile soul of the land in front of the appreciative world audience. The music is enlivening, and every moment of the film feels precious and satisfying to the soul and you wish and hope the movie never ends. The emotion is boundless and you empathize with the main characters throughout the film. Who is to decide what is righteous or not, but you can believe and love the dazzling treatment the director paints the film with. The chirping of the birds, the quaint sounds of the wild, the smooth running of the fresh pure water in the river, the dark mountains, and the flora and fauna of this beautiful Goan terrain that has hypnotized the poets and sadhus of this world for ages, embellish the environs that forms the backdrop to this magnificent film. The film ends sadly with Vinayak cutting off the rope of the bridge as he cuts off his life from the other side - POLTODDI. The Man Beyond the Bridge is directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar (also screenplay). The cast includes Chittaranjan Giri, Veena Jamkar, Prashanti Talpankar and Vasant Josalkar. The music is by Debasish Bhattacharjee/Ved Nair, sound by Rajendra Hegde, cinematography by Arup Mandal and edited by Sankalp Meshram. The affable portrayal of Vinayak by Chittaranjan Giri is commendable. Veena Jamkar as his live-in companion/mentally challenged woman hardly speaks, except to say Naka.., but acts superbly. So do the fine charismatic characters of SarPunch, adviser/midwife (voijinn) Prashanti Talponnkar, Bhott and Possorkar, who give this film its finishing touches. Director Shetgaonkar has tackled various aspects of life in this film: loneliness, yearning for love and companionship, serenity of nature, conservation, religious passion and fervour, politics, community celebrations, social mores and traditions and most of all he has used appropriate spoken Konkani language to give a legitimate touch to this film's locale. With films like “Poltodcho Munis” and directors like Laxmikant Shetgaunkar, India, if not Goa, can be proud of its own “Slum Dog” achievements in the world of films. You have to see this marvellous film for its mercurial soul and most of all for its “MUNISPONN”. Reviewed by Silviano C. [Goanet] Cood/Coor System-A Study of Goan Club life in Bombay
Reference to Frederick Noronha's message reGoa's premier mailing list, estb. 1994. dated 9/14/09 I was really happy to read all the pages pertaining Goan Clubs where in I spent my school days in Bombay. I first went to Sonapur Church school then Little Flower and last year in St Sebastian school in Dabul my second High school in English -( First in Portuguese in Carmona and Margao.) I still remember, because of the noise in the Club, we used to gather at St Sebastian during night time to study for SSC. Bishop Mascarenhas who was principal then, allowed us students from Little Flower School -after student strike there. My second language was Latin and for that particular year, Bishop M. could not set Latin subject paper for SSC. as he was our principal at St S., first year. All those years, seven I think, I studied in the club. Members were very proud of me. However,in the evenings I went to Dabul school to study. My SSC exam also was memorable. As I had chicken pox a week before the exam to be held at Elphiston College, After first day, I was sent to Infectious Hospital where I completed my exam inspite of headaches. So these clubs which are still going on was my history too. All sea-men went to work on ships from there. Out of 60/70 regulars at the club we had only about six to eight who worked as white collar workers majority were sea-men and rest of them worked as electricians like my brother and mechanics etc. Like me, there must be so many others who experienced these clubs I am still very proud of the assistance they gave me till I went to Africa to work for Standard Bank and the rest of my history in New York and now retired in Arizona. Thank you again to Mr. Noronha and all others who are doing excellent job for us Goans now and posterity. Barnabe Rodrigues -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. [Goanet] Sonia's Austerity drama
Soni Sonia travels economy class to Mumbai. This was a flashing news on all 24X7 news channels for entire day yesterday. Why all this Austerity drama Madame Sonia? We have more bigger pressing issues today in the country like inflation, unemployment, terrorism etc than this nautanky. These Kaangress leaders are displaying only their stupidity by showing their contempt for the People of India whom they think are mere compliant and bottomless idiots. Even if Sonia traveled economy class she was guarded by dozens of NSG security men and many chamchas and boot lickers hanging around her in the flight and this all on Govt expenses. Why is she not showing austerity at extravagance of Z security given to her daughter Priyanka and son-in-law Vadra which costs crores of rupees to exchequer ? The austerity will be if she could bring her Italian mafia friend Quattorocchi along with the money he and her husband Rajiv took in Bofors Kick-backs. Travelling in economy class and train are just not enough to prove this dynastical family’s austerity. Next was Yuvraj Rahul’s turn to display austerity. He flew in private jet to Chennai and then travelled to Jalandhar in train . What a tamasha !!! Next episode of this drama will be Priyanka who will travel in a bus or in Auto Rickshow. Tokenism bereft of real work on ground becomes patent hypocrisy and laughing stuff,” Ravi Shankar Prasad – BJP Leader.
