I too find it hard to understand the line of reasoning that Arwin has started,
and what the analogy between Maoists and Goans is, and why he thinks that India
is a "pseudo-secular" country from that. The question that he needs to answer
is simple.

Does any cause justify aggressive violence involving murder of hundreds of
people each year, which the Maoists are doing?

Nearly 4000 people have been killed as a consequence of Maoist violence in
India since 2005.

Cheers,

Santosh

Dear Mr Tony Martin,
We sometimes scratch everywhere except at the spot which itches. Your post
reminds me of this. If it were not for 'i read your romi konkni bit' I
would be left wondering whether it is some other Borges you are addressing.
My post dealt with the advisability or otherwise of doing away with the term
"Romi Konknni" and replacing it with "Romi lipyent boroiloli Konknni bhas"
every time we are referring to "Konkani language written in Roman script."
And I was reacting to an article by Tomazinho Cardozo in Vavraddeancho Ixtt,
the relevant parts of which were quoted in translation as well as in
original. But your post has absolutely no connection with that issue.
However, I shall deal with your points to the best of my ability.
1. You begin by saying that you don't know me. In fact, in my opinion, this
is the best situation. When we personally know the person, we tend to
concentrate on that PERSON and neglect the ISSUE being discussed.
2. I "coukd be a good cow for?some pundaliks and udays to milk freely to
their advantage." I have no objection if some tom, dick, harry, pundalik,
uday or whoever uses my matter for his / her advantage. What I write is the
truth as I know it personally or have acquired from elsewhere, the sources
also being cited. Therefore, why should I hide the truth just because some
'wrong' persons might use it to their advantage? On the contrary, it would
be dishonest to hide the truth, on this specious premise! If you find that
what I state as facts are not true, you are welcome to refute them with
necessary evidence. Or, if the facts are correct and my inference thereon
is illogical, you are welcome to point that out as well; I shall appreciate
your reactions as that will help edify me.
3. "Gulf money and GPA". I do not know anything about any Gulf money and I
have not even heard of anyone bearing the initials GPA. However, if you
feel that I might have some info on these, please be specific.
4. What gave you the impression that I am giving or denying awards / grants
to writers? Please be specific.
5. "Do you know one Reginald Fernandes??" I do not know any living person
with this name. However, I know that there WAS a Konkani novelist bearing
this name. Perhaps you mean that he should have received a Sahitya Akademi
(SA) Award. May be you are right. However, we remember such people only
after they have left this world. Are there no living worthies? Why don't
their names get the required exposure? Why can we not use these eminent
writers as resource persons in workshops for budding writers? Jess
Fernandes has received the Award recently. Now tell me. Do you remember
that Jess was ever used as a resource person in any of the workshops
organized by Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA)? Please note that he got the
award only after he published his work in Devanagari. As early as September
2004, I had suggested that we should transliterate and publish in Devanagari
such works of LIVING writers which meet SA standards. I had
suggested that DKA should select such work, I had volunteered to do the
transliteration and DKA could arrange for the publication, if the author was
reluct

Arwin,

When armed groups in a secular democracy are willing to wantonly kill people
in order to get their political way, as the Maoists have been doing for
decades now, the first order of business is to stop them, by force if
necessary. Even the home of Mao has given up trying to get their way by
force and have adopted their own form of economic capitalism raising the
living standards of millions of Chinese.

Look at how peaceful Sri Lanka is now that the Tamil Tigers have been
exterminated by force.

There is no Goan analogy to the Maoists. The corruption in Goa has been
unintentionally tolerated by Goans themselves by electing and re-electing
corrupt politicians.

The deadline to sign the petition above is approaching - mid April .
I am surprised that so many of you who regularly read and write in this
forum, and who are concerned about Goa's environment, the destruction of Goa
and so on, have not yet given your support to our efforts to control mining
in Goa. It just takes a minute of your time, and it is such an important
issue for Goa and Goans! Perhaps the attached photo of one of the many mines
in Goa I recently visited, will persuade you to sign! The destruction is
rapid and frightening!
Let's try and stop this menace in Goa!

We don't have this kind of opportunities very often , and so I urge you to
please give us your full support. This is one time when we stand a very good
chance of influencing policy in Goa. But we need to at least show that we
care by signing the petition. Every signature counts and is very important!

Anjuna farm houses row:Farming Society dispels fears

HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, April 8

The members of Panorama Harvests Co-operative Collective Farming
Society Ltd, Anjuna, which has been in the news for sometime now, have
asserted that there is nothing illegal in what they have been doing on
atop a hill in Anjuna and have expressed concern over the
“misinformation instigated by some”, regarding the alleged “farm
houses” atop a hill at Anjuna.

“We are a registered audited Farming Society formed under the bye-laws
of the Maharashtra Co-operative Society Act 1960, as applied to Goa,
(now according to the Goa Co-op Societies Act) and has its area of
operation extended to Anjuna, Arpora and Calangute villages. Our main
objectives are to promote farming and other related activity in the
area of operation”, said Nilesh Dabholkar, Chairman, The Panorama
Harvests Co-operative society.

Among the active members of the farming society are the original tenant
and 3 families of cashew pluckers, who even now are working on the
collection and extraction of cashew and cashew juice. They have been
doing this for nearly 50 years, he said denying that it was a cattle
grazing land.

Over last few years, tens of thousands of trees have been planted and
nurtured including teak, mangium, cashew, herbs and other fruit trees.
The panchanama conducted by the Forest Department will bear this out,
Dabholkar said. Many of our members are actively concerned with
environmental issues, organic farming, and we have worked with many
NGOs towards this cause, he claimed.

Membership of the society, he said, is open to anyone who is genuinely
interested in these activities of agriculture, plantation, forestry,
floriculture, beekeeping and related matters in the area of operation.

“As the Society has been granted permissions for agri-horti projects
only, we intend to comply with this faithfully and do not intend to ask
for any kind of conversion, which in any case, is not permitted by our
bye-laws”, the press note said.

Referring to the 39 plots, Dabholkar said all are committed to
plantations of various sorts. On about half the plots we may come up
with farmhouses for some of our own financing members and even these
plots would have forest and other plantations.

As regards No Development Zone as proposed in 2011 Regional Plan, the
initial NOC for internal subdivision for plots each of at least 4000m2
for agri-horticultural purposes, including road was given as far back
as 1994. The final NOC was given by TCP in 2006, after taking contours
into account. No hill cutting permission was necessary, Dabolkar
claimed.

Therefore, on a plot of say 4000m2, the coverage will not be of more
than 100 m2. “We have passed a resolution disallowing compound walls,
and giving free access for harvesting and collection purposes”.

A large portion of the land will be committed to nature walks through a
botanical garden, well suited for birdwatchers and hikers alike.
Included among the activities will be the continuation of cashew
collection and juice extraction which has been going on for several
years, nursery and landscaping services, forest plantation, etc, with
only organic farming methods. This year, more emphasis will be put on
the growing of exotic flowers. “While ruling out building of bore
wells, we hope to carry out water harvesting to increase the water
table for the whole area”.

http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Anjuna-farm-houses-row-Farming-Society-dispels-fears/35620.html

COMMENT: Most cashew trees from the area have been felled.

There are concrete structures coming up in these plots, which are not farm
houses but buildings!

Thank you Dr. Barad for this article.
I have gone through Arundhati Roy's Essay thoroughly and completely.

I too do not agree with the Maoist phyche.
But with all the power and money that the Indian state has at its disposal,
why leave your own destitute tribal peoples to the mercies of the Maoists?
Take them under your wings, give them the best you can afford to give,
change their perception of never getting anywhere, even with their
posterity.
Show them the change that they will like and adopt - not force it down their
throat.
And at the same time expose the Maoists for what they are. Weaning the
people off the Maoist support-line is the trick, the intelligent state like
India can use win this war.

But alas!, the intelligent state that is India wants to be in the pockets of
Corporates such as Vedanta and Ors.

The people manning the labyrinths of New Delhi have to grow up, indeed,
to make the Maoists vanish in thin air.

A naïve admiration for the Maoists is emblematic of the tendency in some
among the Indian intellectual class toward left-wing utopianism.

Maoist insurgents ambushed Indian security forces in the dense forest
region of Chhattisgarh state in central India on Tuesday, killing over 70
troops of the Central Reserve Police Force. Analysts are calling it the
worst single-day loss in fighting domestic insurgencies.

It may be recalled that on this day the first tiatr "Italian Bhurgo" was staged

It is the dedication and sacrifices of the triumvurate of "tiatr" viz Lucacinho

Comments:
Thank you Mr. Kakodkar for asking these very pertinent questions.
We Goenkars do live in a 'make believe' world. GBA was hijacked in its laid
down course right from the day of its formation through infiltration of
minds which are pro-mega projects and hill cutting etc. And the 3000 odd
crowd at the Azad Maidan on Dec 18, 2006 was taken for a jolly good ride.
The bumpy effects of that ride is experienced today. The GBA has lost all
its teeth. Why do I say that? If it was not so, how come the TCP amendment
16 & 16A is not withdrawn yet? The people of Goa must not lose heart in mega
movements led by supposed to be sincere Goans walking the wrong road. The
PPS movement is building up by itself because there is no 'one' charismatic
person who is leading it. This movement belongs to one and all. One needs to
be wanting, desiring POLITICAL SANITY in the way Goa is run, ruled and
dominated. The mining issue is the ISSUE that has taken Goa down and is
going to see it at the bottom of the pit soon, if Goa does not erupt into a
'Naxal' type movement. Sanctimonious heads at the top who are doubling up as
commission agents must roll just like during the French Revolution. But in
these modern time where the so called democracy rules, the 'guillotine' must
be replaced by the ballot to severe the necks of the corrupters and the
corrupted.

Only PPS has the potential to not only bell the cat but to see that the cat
is banished to the political wilderness for ever.

Three cheers to the 'PEOPLE for POLITICAL SANITY'
Three cheers to 'PEOPLE'S POWER SYSTEM'
And last but not the least
A Cheer for the GOAN and for his GOA which has been forgotten and left in

Mao vs. Gandhi in Chhattisgarh
By SALIL TRIPATHI

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303720604575169614063173730.ht
ml

A naïve admiration for the Maoists is emblematic of the tendency in some
among the Indian intellectual class toward left-wing utopianism.

Maoist insurgents ambushed Indian security forces in the dense forest
region of Chhattisgarh state in central India on Tuesday, killing over 70
troops of the Central Reserve Police Force. Analysts are calling it the
worst single-day loss in fighting domestic insurgencies.

But despite such massacres, not everyone in India regards the Maoists with
horror. One such apologist is the talented and articulate novelist
Arundhati Roy who has, since her Booker Prize-winning 1997 novel "The God of
Small Things," focused on bigger things, such as attacking Indian economic
reforms, foreign investment, free markets, the United States and Israel.

In a rambling 19,500-word essay published a week ago in Outlook magazine in
India and the Guardian newspaper, Ms. Roy writes of recent experiences
following the Maoists in the Dandakaranya forest, near where the security
forces were ambushed this week. The piece was headlined "Gandhi, but with
guns."

The comparison is obscene. Not only does it suggest an amoral nihilism, it
also represents a rewriting of history. A Gandhian with a gun is as absurd
as a Maoist pacifist. India's founding father Mohandas Gandhi may not have
been as perfect as some would make him out, but he did believe that only the
right means could be used to reach an end, however noble. In 1922 he
suspended a nationwide civil disobedience movement, when some Congress
followers burned a police station in Chauri Chaura, killing over a dozen
policemen and officers. Maoist ideology is precisely the opposite: The ends
justify the means.

Ms. Roy herself notes that when she mentioned Mohandas Gandhi's non-violent
struggle to the Maoists, they laughed hysterically. Despite her best
efforts to portray a bucolic image of Maoists and tribals living
harmoniously, their tranquility disturbed by forest officers, loggers,
mining companies, and security forces, the truth still comes through.

The Maoists show off an impressive arsenal of weapons, and their teenage
recruits watch hours of reruns of violent ambush videos. The kids tell her
they want to implement Mao's vision in India.

Ms. Roy's naïve admiration for the Maoists is emblematic of the tendency in
some among the Indian intellectual class toward left-wing utopianism.
In
"Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers," Tom Wolfe lampooned the Park
Avenue elite sucking up to the Black Panther terrorists who were killing
cops in 1960s America. Is history repeating itself in India?

Nevertheless, just as in America three decades ago, the tide may be turning
as ordinary voters become fed up with the violence. Maoists have been
fighting the Indian state for over four decades under various names,
including Naxalites, the name the movement got because of its origins in
the town Naxalbari in West Bengal, where peasants revolted against
landlords in the 1960s.

Like Maoists elsewhere, they are brutal. They conduct show-trials,
sometimes executing the people they find guilty; they use improvised
explosive devices and land mines; and they appear to use child soldiers.
Since 2006, their attacks have become audacious, targeting police stations,
power lines, schools and trains. They have not spared civilians and other
"class enemies" who in their view collaborate with the state.

Even India's Communist Parties have distanced themselves from Maoists, and
condemned their practices. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party strongly
supports the government in its battle. For his part, Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh has called the Maoists' threat the gravest national security
crisis the country faces.

To be sure, Indians living in forests have legitimate grievances. Their
rights are routinely violated. Successive governments have failed them.

Large companies, Indian and foreign, want the mineral wealth in those
forests. The state hasn't built schools, nor equipped the few that are
built. There are few primary health care centers, and the administration
neglects remote areas. The rapidly modernizing and prospering parts of
urban India ignores the region, its poverty, and its problems.

But the Maoists offer no solution. Their collectivist authoritarianism is
culturally alien in an India where spiritual acceptance of fate prevails,
and where, despite feudal structures, inequities and rigidi

If you didn't notice, amcho Leander bab appeared slick and sharp on
the cover of Indian edition of GQ (Gentelmen's Quarterly)...last
months edition. There is a feature interview and a photo feature on
him...nice,nice, a fashionable Goichi.

GQ has been doing a bit on Goa including a fashion feature called Goa
Standard Time in their first edition by Goa-based photographer Prabuda
Dasgupta.

More recently, a directionless, listless piece on Goan football or
rather concentrating on a former mining company's football team. Not
sure the author has seen much of Goan football...or if any of you have
been going to the Nehru Stadium, like the policemen on duty, one could
fall asleep and miss nothing. Its fashionable to hire foreign coaches
but they change nothing. Goan football was exciting, alive and well
in the old days when players often had a shot at the bar before
entering the ground and the likes of Bernard and Catao rocked the
stadium.
For a style and grooming magazine (GQ), one would think they would
picture the coach of the featured football team with his ears covered
no (gave an impression that the coaches ears were smoking)?

On the brighter side, there is Chastity Fernendiz...aye saaiba, moje

Therefore my pub food report will be short. The cook went for Bengal curry
instead, Goa evening has been postponed for 6 weeks (& I won't be there)!

But the Bengal curry itself was good, esp. the fish (makes sense). The pub
(Rats - forgot its name again!) has a reputation to hold: it was several
times Best Indian Pub Food Award winner...

Thanks Eddie F for the Goan Seafood Co. Site looks great! But of course
they come only to Glaston for the festival once a year. And the festival
itself has a somewhat distended relationship with the town (which has a
somewhat troubled one with its own past ... and present ;-)

Now speaking of Bengal, is any member of the GAB on this list? I'd like to
hear from them!

Cheers from patrizio & Dnooos!

Comments:

Fair enough. No one must be allowed to take law in their own hands. But if
it is 'insurrections' such as in these 4-5 states of India, then there must
be something acutely wrong with the governance, the policy making process
and the policy makers. First, introspection of government's own policies,
where, how and why they hurt the sentiments of a large chunks of people
(especially tribals who live as one with nature), followed by the redressal
that not only does work but must be seen as working, such as by taking these
people into confidence. Second, unconditional amnesty to the people at large
without prejudice and personal victimisations for past deeds or
involvements. Third, unbiased and impartial trials of those who have been
proven to have indulged in criminal activities, unrelated to the
insurection, the taking of lives and the destruction of property aka
personal revenge. Design a way whereby the people themselves will hold the
trials.

Talking Photo: This  KOVASO reminds me of my teacher Nisha

I was looking for this to capture for the last 3 years.
Yesterday, when we got stranded at Verna - Cansaulim Road,
I saw this from a distance, and walk straight through the fields covering
for about 300-400 metres.

It also reminds me of my Hindi Teacher  ‘Nisha’. Who was very much
fond of this flower with strong fragrance.  We often gave it to her.
She was our class teacher too.

Hindu women usually wear it on their heads.
They would take one bar or bud (3-4 inch long see pic) and wrap it
in one of its yellow petal/leaf and place it on their hair with the
help of hair-pin.
