[Goanet] Ho ‘Top politician’s son’ konnacho gai?

2010-06-02 Thread JoeGoaUk
Ho  ‘Top politician’s son’ konnacho gai?

Quotes:
‘A leading Goa politician’s son used to meet nearly every day
an Israeli drug dealer, now in jail.’

“I have met his son; he came every day at our house
in Siolim  and at evenings to Atala Coffee shop Anjuna.
Everyone knows him,”  Says Lucky Framhouse.

She claims having video footage too.

Here I have a question to our Home Minister.
No, no, I won’t ask you who the politician son is..

We know that your or your dept sent at least 3 officers to
Mumbai/Bombay and Chennai/Madras to take statement
from  late Nadia Torrado

How many officers did you send to meet  Lucky Famhouse
while she was in Bombay recently for about a month?

Believe me or not, in the name of saving Goa from drug peddlers or
Police-drug-Mafia,
I feel sending someone to take statement from
Lucky Farmhouse was most important
or most urgent than taking statement from the patient
at the hospitals.

Looks like our Police dept got its priorities wrong

[Goanet] Kamat taught about nuances of Ratol by women activists

taught about nuances of Ratol by women activists

Panaji, June 2 : Women activists on Wednesday gave chief minister Digambar
Kamat a hands-on lesson on how to use Ratol, a popular commercially
available rat poison.
Activists from Savera a women’s organization also handed over a memorandum
to Kamat, seeking a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of
twenty-eight year old alleged paramour of Mickky Pacheco, Nadia Torrado, who
died after consumption of Ratol.
“We had taken a tube of Ratol along with us. We also told him that it was
simply not possible to mistake Ratol, which comes packaged in a tube as a
poisonous paste, from ordinary toothpaste,” Kerkar further stated, after
meeting Kamat at his residence.
“Ratol does not taste like toothpaste. Do you swallow toothpaste? Nadia
swallowed toothpaste. Why is the mother trying to cover this up? Is she
trying to save the politician involved?” Kerkar questioned.
“The chief minister seemed convinced by our argument about Ratol. He has
said that the investigators will leave no stone unturned,” she said.

[Goanet] A call to all well meaning Goans

2010-06-02 Thread Anthony M Barreto
"Tarvottis risked their lives on the seas while Gulfies slogged it out with job
insecurity." TRUE. But they RIGHTLY did it only for themselves and their
families. It's nothing about Goa and Goans.
Risk and slogging is part of life for those living in the Gulf or anywhere else
across the globe. Even the ants slog so why the big fuss.
Speechifying apart, this is getting too far while Goa is on its way to losing
its essence, identity, land or whatever is left of it to the greed of our own
politicians, administrators and Delhi lords.
There are scores of court battles to be fought against ravenous politicians,
avaricious businessmen, greedy administrators and big money corporates – but
where is the organization to fight them? Poor Seby Rodrigues is fighting a lone
battle with the mining Czars.
Forget the GBA that is getting more blind and deaf every passing day. Let all
Goans who care about Goa form ONE organization – Something like Goa Protectors
(if it is not patented to Rudolf Fernandes) -- and join hands and resources
with fully functional branches in every Taluka.
It’s not just about saving Goa from vicious vested interests it’s also about
helping Goans, taking up social issues.
There are talented children whose education is uncertain, there are parents --
some of them, may be, parents of these very overseas xapotkars -- waiting for
the mercy of death in some aged home, there are children uncertain of their
next meal, there are scores of people dying as they are simply unable to afford
the cost of medicine, there are some exceptional kids waiting to shine and be
the light of the world but right now they have problem keeping the lamp in
their own house burning. And all this is in tiny Goa.
On a different note if the government cannot give us decent roads, regular
power and water supply and meaningful education, it is a matter for action --
for Goans and NRIs jointly under Goa Protectors.
The problem is that there are so many overseas people telling us about what is
wrong with Goa as if we resident Goans didn't know that. What Goa needs is
doers – man of action. Will the well meaning overseas guys and local residents
come under the umbrella of one organization, whatever the name, and do
something concrete before we are left with nothing but regrets for losing
everything we could have easily saved?

[Goanet] Central Excise officer caught taking bribe in Goa

Press Trust Of India
Panaji, June 02, 2010

A senior Central Excise officer was today arrested by CBI for
allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 18,000 near here.

Superintendent of Central Excise A S Patil was allegedly accepting the
bribe from a scrap dealer in Bicholim town, 30 km from here, CBI
(anti-corruption bureau) Superintendent of Police S S Gavli told
reporters.

CBI laid a trap after the dealer complained about constant harassment
for bribe by the officer, he said.

The accused-officer had allegedly demanded money from the dealer and
threatened to stop his business in Ponda town, 35km from here, if he
failed to pay up, Gavli said.

Patil has been booked under Prevention of Corruption Act and remanded
in two-day CBI custody by a court here.

Gavli said Patil's movable and immovable properties in Goa and Mumbai
are being probed. The probe agency sleuths raided the excise officer's
house in Mumbai after the arrest.

CBI said they have gathered evidence against the accused, including an
audio recording.

1. Gulfees do not know how to do business, they only know to work and save
2. In general Goan Christians do not want to take risk
Ghantis did not have any money (they borrow it), if they lose - they had
nothing in the first place
SO THEY WORK HARD TO MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT LOSE IT.
3. Goans prefer to go to Parties for Party's sake. While Ghantis will
utilise every social occasion (including Religious) to exchange ideas and
get contacts for business.

Yes its Arundhati Roy again. Anyway, chill a bit and read, "Arundhati Roy
talks on 'War of People' "(excerpt)These are not questions that are coming
from art galleries -- they are coming from the millions of people who have
put their lives on the line to ask this question. The answers are the key to
what is going to become of this planet, this civilisation, the human race.
http://news.rediff.com/special/2010/jun/02/arundhati-roy-on-war-of-people.htm

No need to get irritated at her if you were really reading. In case the
reading was off, here:
(Significant excerpt)

"I am not here to defend the killing of innocent people by anybody, not by
the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the Maoists or the government. That is
not my brief. When the 76 CRPF personnel were killed, there was this
tremendous pressure on me, saying you went inside, you romanticised
violence, now come and condemn this violence. BUt I ask what were the CRPF
people - she lists an array of heavy arms -- doing there?

It is not so simple, it is a very thorny, knotty issue. It is not possible
for me to go there and see these people with their loin clothes, bows and
arrows, and you want to snatch it from them, and you want me on your side,
it cant be done, she says

This is the war between the poorest people of the world, against the biggest
democracy in the world. And they are winning. They have stopped the
corporates on their tracks.

They are asking a serious question. This is questioning the meaning of
democracy, of civilisation itself. "

Of course I am not in India. I am saying it from outside the country; but
that should not matter (in my case).

[Goanet] South Goa, North Goa districts among India's top 20 well-being list (TNN)

2010-06-02 Thread Goanet News
Four Delhi districts in top 20 well-being list
Mahendra Kumar Singh, TNN, Jun 3, 2010, 12.57am IST

NEW DELHI: In what further cements Delhi's pre-eminent position as the
most liveable Indian city, three of the Capital's districts grabbed
the top three slots in a well-being index reflecting the quality of
life while one more made it within the top 20.

Central Delhi topped the index, based on the NSSO survey, followed by
north Delhi and New Delhi districts while south Delhi was at 20th
position. The lowly rank for south Delhi would come as a surprise,
given the posh tag attached to it, but taken as a district, it is also
home to several urban villages where amenities are not exactly
top-notch.

Mumbai and Mumbai suburban were at fourth and fifth positions in the
first-ever such index measured on eight criteria -- education,
hygiene, entertainment, communication, healthcare, transportation,
home amenities and kitchen facilities.

Among the metros, Bangalore urban was at ninth followed by Chennai at
10th and Kolkata at 11th.

>From Maharastra, Pune made it to the list of districts with better
quality of life at seventh position. Two cities from the north-east
found places in the top 20 -- Dimapur at 6th and Aizawl at 13th
position. Three Punjab districts featured in the list -- Fatehgarh
Sahib (15), Patiala (16) and Jalandhar (19) -- while Chandigarh was at
8th.

South Goa was at 14th position, north Goa at 18th. Kerala's
Pathanamthitta was at 12th and Ahmedabad could manage only 17th rank.

Districts from Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand figured prominently in the
bottom 20 of the well-being index, reflecting poor quality of life in
the region. Seven districts of Orissa, six of Bihar and two of
Jharkhand were in the bottom 20 list.

Rayagada and Kandhamal of Orissa ranked first and second in the bottom
20 of the list. Other districts of Orissa which were poor performers
were Nuapada (4), Balangir (9), Koraput (10) and Bargarh (19).

Among the Bihar districts in the bottom 20 were Banka at 3rd position,
Sheohar (5), Nalanda (12), Kaimur (13), Khagaria (14) and Araria (20).
Kawardha (6), Lohardaga (16) and Dumka (17) of Chattisgarh were also
on the list.

But when it came to female security index (FSI) -- well-being, status
and treatment of women -- there was a clear divide between north and
south India. The worst rating was found in Punjab, MP, western UP,
Haryana and Delhi.

While central Delhi topped the bottom 20 list of female security index
(FSI), seven of the Capital's districts -- south-west Delhi (5),
north-east Delhi (7), east Delhi (9), south Delhi (12), north-west
Delhi (15) and north Delhi (18) were in the bottom 20 list.

>From Haryana, Panipat figured at number 3 followed by Rohtak at 10 and
Gurgaon at 13 in the bottom list. Six districts of Madhya Pradesh,
including Gwalior (4), Shivpuri (6) and Vidisha (14), were also on the
list.

Southern states performed better on female security index. Seven
districts of Tamil Nadu featured on the index with Sivaganga at the
top. While Hamirpur (Himachal) was at number 2, what could surprise
many is Azamgarh at 15th rank in top 20 districts according to female
security index.

Personally speaking, I find Freddy Agnelo Fernandes and Arwin Misquita and
lately one Manuel Tavares very irritating with their endless dictates on Goa
and Goans.
May be, beyond words, they have done many things truly meaningful for the
sudarop of Goa and Goans. I would love if they would chose to write
something on that count.
Some organisations across the seas hold felicitations and
programmes/celebrations that are little more than cheap gimmicks for
publicity.
May be I am wrong but if there is anything that ignorant me needs to know
let them let me know. Let them show that they are not some self-seeking
hypocrites hiding behind colourful facades.

RESPONSE: Barreto you come out with such arrogance and ignorance,
unbelieveable! If only you were as knowledgeable as you make out to be, you
would not have replied thus. Kindly Google and check what the Christian
position is/was on burying persons who have committed suicide. There was a
time when the Church would not officiate at a funeral of a suicide victim
and certainly I have heard that they would not allow the burial of such a
person within their grounds, especially in Goa.

In this instance they probably accepted that it was accidental death.

Check it out and come back to us, you clever dick head.

suspicious circumstances surrounding the death (of Nadia) which point
towards abetment of a suicide. For a professional investigation, the case
has been transferred to Crime Branch for further investigation with
immediate effect,' the pressnote said.

Pacheco, in a letter to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, however, said he has
been a victim of a witch-hunt by Goa Police.

'Goa Police have indulged in witch-hunting to harass me and my family
unnecessarily, obviously at the behest of some vested interests following
the death of Mrs Nadia Torrado,' Pacheco has said, adding that he has been
served notice by the police not to leave the state without their permission.

Calling the deceased Nadia a close personal friend, Pacheco said the police
were also harassing her family.

Calling the behaviour of Goa Police 'weird' and 'biased', Pacheco has said
'the police force is behaving at the instance of some vested interests in
the government who have been always inimical to me'.

'I, therefore, request you to institute a judicial enquiry by a retired
high court judge to investigate impartially the death of my good friend
Nadia as well as the excise scam and the drug racket in which cases the kin
and the kith of political bigwigs in the government are involved,' Pacheco
has told the chief minister.

While the excise scam Pacheco referred to is a multi-crore illegal alcohol
smuggling racket involving the excise ministry, which is a part of Kamat's
portfolio, the trail of the drug racket Pacheco mentioned leads up to a
senior cabinet minister, whose son, as alleged by a Swedish model and former
girlfriend of an Israeli drug dealer, has links with the drug mafia in Goa.

Re: [Goanet] GOONDA POLITICIANS & BLOODY DALALS of INDIA

2010-06-02 Thread floriano

I had worked hard to draw up a profile just like this one but for my GOA in
the year 2000. And I had thought that Goa Su-Raj could be India Su-Raj in
not so distant future.

But going through this well presented Manifesto for India (Goa?) , my hopes
have been dashed, decimated, guillotined, burnt at stake with just one
criterion which is Number 11. Of all the second professions on offer, why I
had to be a builder is something I will grow ulcers about in my old age.
However, numbers 22 to 26 could be a 'balm' of sorts, some bonus marks
perhaps, because being a builder, I have always worked to improve things in
this directions. Perhaps someone will consider these positive indicators to
remove the blanket ban on the career I have been meticulously building up
(surely not Construction but Politics). Otherwise it would be a SHAME, a
mere waste of 10 solid years' hard work.

Having gone through the entire proposition, could it be that some bright
star on the foggy horizon is thinking of a new generation political outfit
for India and/or Goa??? to compete with the likes of Swami Ram Dev of
Bharat Swabiman ???

Could it perhaps be 'LPI' and/or LPG respectively

I wonder.

[Goanet] Who can receive a Catholic Funeral.

*Stay tuned to Goanet - everyday someone, somewhere learns a little.
*

*
*

*

*Excerpt
*

*May someone who commits suicide receive a Catholic funeral?** *In the past,
people who committed suicide were often denied a Church funeral. This was
not a judgment of the deceased’s eternal destiny (indeed, the Church has
always offered Masses for those who have committed suicide). Rather, a
Church funeral was denied to the deceased in order to avoid giving scandal
to the faithful and to emphasize the grave nature of suicide.

As in the past, the Church teaches that suicide is and always will be
objectively and gravely wrong. At the same time, today she better
understands the psychological disturbances that may influence a suicide and
thus mitigate personal culpability. This being the case, those who take
their life are now typically provided funerals (cf. *Catechism*, no. 2282).
* *

*May divorced and remarried Catholics receive a Catholic funeral? *As with
persons who had committed suicide, persons who had remarried outside the
Church were often denied a Catholic funeral. Again, this was to avoid giving
scandal to the faithful and to prevent the faithful from taking the matter
lightly. 2

The Church now generally allows Catholic funerals and burials to those who
have divorced and remarried. This discipline of allowing funerals does not
change the Church’s doctrine: Divorce and remarriage without an annulment is
and always will be objectively wrong. (For more on the Church’s teaching on
divorce and remarriage, please see our Faith Fact on the subject.)

Mickky summoned in Nadia death case
TNN, Jun 2, 2010, 06.37am IST

MARGAO: The police on Tuesday summoned state tourism minister
Francisco ‘Mickky’ Pacheco for questioning in connection with the
“unnatural death” of Loutolim resident Nadia Joelle Torrado, 27.
Earlier in the morning, the South Goa authorities had stopped Nadia’s
funeral and conducted a second autopsy on her body.

Nadia, who was known to be close to the politician, died at Chennai’s
Apollo Hospitals on Saturday after developing septicemia. She had
consumed rat poison along with anti-depressant tablets on May 15,
which led to severe damage to her liver and kidneys.

Lyndon Monteiro, officer on special duty to the tourism minister,
confirmed having received the summons. “Mickky did receive the summons
asking him to appear before the police today at 4pm. However, he
received it only at 4.20pm. He therefore called them up to acknowledge
the late receipt of the summons and to express his inability to appear
before them on Tuesday. He will now appear before the police on
Wednesday,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nadia’s brother Rommel Torrado and her estranged widower
Winston Barretto told officiating SDM (Salcete) Agnelo Fernandes that
they did not suspect any foul play in the circumstances leading to
Nadia’s death.

Rommel, in his statement to the SDM, said he has “no complaint against
any individual and that the death of Nadia occurred due to accidental
poisoning and not due to any foul play”. Stating that Nadia
accidentally consumed ‘Ratol’ mistaking it for toothpaste, Rommel
stressed that “she didn’t implicate nor blame any individual for the
same”.

In his statement to the magistrate, Barreto said there was a “cordial
relationship between us”. He said that after three years of their
marriage, Nadia decided to “live her life on her own” while he went
abroad in 2007.

[Goanet] NEWS: Only in India: A Brahmin groom for a Catholic bride (Ashley D'Mello, TNN)

2010-06-02 Thread Goanet News
Only in India: A Brahmin groom for a Catholic bride

Ashley D'Mello, TNN, May 16, 2010,

MUMBAI: When Winnie D'Souza wanted to marry her daughter into a
‘decent' family, she scanned the matrimonial columns of Catholic
periodicals in Panaji. After shortlisting a few young men, D'Souza
made inquiries about their caste. She wanted her daughter to marry a
Brahmin. Most Catholic publications do not list caste categories as
they did 20 years ago, but casteism has not disappeared among
Christians. It has merely become more subtle.

Unlike Bihar, Orissa and the North-East, which have large tribal
Christian populations, the Christians of Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu
remain in thrall to the caste categories of their Hindu ancestors.

Father Augustine Kanjamala, a theologian in Mumbai, has researched
caste among Christians. Caste exists in different forms in various
Christian communities, he says. In Kerala the Christians admitted to
the faith almost 2,000 years ago are called Syrian Christians. They
are better off than Latin Christians, who are mainly from poorer
communities. Syrian Christians and Latin Christians do not
inter-marry. They even have different institutions to train their
priests.

In Goa, Christians belonging to Brahmin or Charado (Kshatriya) castes
are more privileged than the others. They dominate Church institutions
and activities. Father Augustine says that in Kerala and Tamil Nadu,
Dalit Christians are not given much access to Church festivities.
Sometimes they are reduced to having a separate church. Two decades
ago, the graveyards had separate sections for upper and lower castes.
This is changing because some progressive priests have challenged the
iniquitous system.

"In Mangalore, a few families of Dalit Christians have returned to
Hinduism as they felt humiliated living among Christians who
discriminated against them,” says Father Augustine. "Caste will not
die out in the Church easily, but in cities like Mumbai, the urban
situation has led to the breaking down of barriers of caste".

[Goanet] Usage of 'double rhyming' words in Konkani - A humorous write-up

2010-06-02 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Sometime back while in Goa, I had picked up a couple of sheet on
Konkani Onomatopoeia
(Anukaran Utor)by Vicente Correia Alphonso.
Anway, yesterday there appeared a lovely write up on 'double rhyming' words
on the Save my Language site.

Usage of 'double rhyming' words in Konkani - A humorous
write-up
One fine morning, my friend *Gulgulo* invited me for a coffee and panchadik
(chitchat). Gulgulo is his nick name, since he is fond of gulgule (earthen
pot) water. He pours *kiTikiTi* (boiling) water into the pot and allows it
to cool overnight. As I entered Gulgule’s home, a *ghamgham* aroma of
freshly prepared coffee welcomed me. Then a bowl full of *hunihuni* chakkuli
straight from the frying pan, arrived. *Ekek* (each one) tasted differently.
If first one was *nurnuri* (crispy), the second one was *kurkuri* (crunchy),
and the third one was *kaTkaTi* (hard nut) that I felt my teeth would break
off. I had *churchur* (worry) about tooth damage for a while. The last
chakkuli was *chivchivi* (soft) specially pulled out of the frying pan when
it is half fried.

Btw, anyone--please share if you happen to know of a better Konkani word,
some other word/s for Onomatopoeia.

Dear J Colaco,

When an infant less than a foot grows to 3 feet at the age of 50, do we call
it progress?

Why should Goans resign to sub-standard results as fate accompli?
Politicians’ agents would always point to a dead child to get vote of a
dwarf that he is better of.

IN RESPONSE To:
JC responded by saying: That may be true but at least
1: Goa will hopefully not go back to the dark days under the Portuguese
(Alda)
2: Not that Goa was all that hunky dory (Frederick)
3: Goans will not have to live in mud houses (Menezes)
4: ConMan will have endless benefits (Barve)
Isn't that progress?
To my statements:
Goa is being raped by Land sharks, mining mafias and politicians. Goans are

I do find it strange that someone would mix up toothpaste with rat poison.
Furthermore, the family's public comments should not necessarily be taken at

[Goanet] Cyber cowards and Sirpaunchas

Selma wrote:
Soter and his "buddies" who are no doubt using Soter, have thrown a lot of
chikol on men like Oscar and Dean. Unfortunately Soter can't handle a little
chikol thrown his way. Then he wants to throw caca at tarvottis and Gulf
Goans, which he accuses them of cleaning up in foreign countries. It's a lot
better than the saffron caca Soter routinely tries to dish out to us.

Soter replies:
1. Soter does not see the need to take 'chikoll' without reason. Keeping
silent would have been construed as assent to the lies circulated. Now that
I rebutt the allegations it is projected as my inability to take 'Chikoll'
thrown at me. What logic is this?

2. We have not made a living by begging or conning NRIs or robbing in
panchayats or licking the feet of MLAs. We are not the cowards who operate
in cyber space as they fear to show their face on ground. These cyber space
cowards can organise a public debate the next time they are in Goa and we
will be there. Soter has nothing to hide and so nothing to fear.

3. The Admin at Goanet appeals not to get personal. What is the recent
personal attack by some and attempt to saffronise my comments? Dr. Virgincar
is right when he says that the very same goanet has been used to malign
others but when it comes to taking the chikoll themselves the coterie hides
behind the garb of goanet rules. Is there a class or caste on goanet that
enjoys special status?

4. Dr. Anil, Dr. Virgincar, Rajan and the number of friends on goanet are
not those who have a mob mentality but have a mind of their own. Probably
Selma has the experience of using others or getting used by others andf
therefore thinks that others are also used. Sorry, we have our independent
thinking. Even though residing abroad, Dr. Anil has his feet on Goan soil
and his hand on the pulse of the local community. He is a recognised and
respected face particularly in his Ponda taluka unlike some cyber space
Goans who see Goans baiting white aunties for their drink and chors in
Panchayats. I will not elaborate his contributions because good deeds speak
for themselves. Some of these cyber space cowards are non-entities in their
own place of origin and have to therefore take recourse of cyber space to
publicise themselves?

5. We do not need cyber space Goans to tell us how we should perceive
Oscar, Dean or our situation in Goa. Our charges are open and the truth
spills out from the horses mouth itself. Dean and Oscar are capable of
rebutting our comments just like some tarvottis and gulfies have done. Has
Selma been appointed counsel to defend the fair and the lovely in Goa?

Many dogs have barked while we have passed down the decades. We are still
alive and kicking. Truth and honesty stands the test of time.

No sprouting seed

Stubborn and profuse

No tourniquet

When greed smothers all

When social animals recoil

Into beasts

I love my red earth

No love, no life

Just dark as night

No celebration of creation

No love, no betrothed

No explosions

My good friend Soter missed naming one very important entity of Goans in his
huge list of enumeration. The little 'prostitute' who keeps the 'sanity' of
the small world that is GOA from blowing up.

BTW if he has included this entity in the line that says ' so many little

him on that score but nevertheless feel that omitting naming of a section
of important people on the grind might be taken as an offence.

I believe there there has been more developments. Basically that what was
begun by our politicos has percolated deep within, even in our institution
of learning. Now even the smiling man next door has a thing towards the
other.

Perhaps more specifics may appear on this forum. They are well worth it, f
only to point out that even the best minds sometimes see differently, or are
misled. The point is that it is also a game, that sometimes catches people
unawares, BUT the fact stays--that abusers of power rarely right anything
wrong. In fact they offer coverup for a share in the stakes. That point
cannot be erased.

Someone mentioned to me that my note was emotional. If anyone saw it as
that, then they do not understand anything about emotions. And I am not
shirking away from what emotion, emotional, emotionality mean. So my note
should be regarded in the corrects sprit. Another said to be careful.

I will face whatever could or may happen to me.

Re: [Goanet] Tarvotteanchim bondolam - In defence of Tarvotis

2010-06-02 Thread Eugene Correia
Soter's remark that he used the words Tarvotteanchim bondolam in reference to
Churchill may be taken at face value. However, he should have made it clear in
his first post.
I remember that during my childhood the words were said in reference to
tarvottis telling long, unbelievable tales such as they saw mermaids. As kids
we believed them. Hence, whenever a tarvotti would spin tales of what he saw
and what he did, it was not taken as gospel truth.
That Churchill was a tarvotti is true. I used to see him eat bun-maska at the
famous Kyani restaurant in Dhobitalao. He used to stay in the Varca club in the
Jer Mahal building. At least one of my tarvotti relative worked with him on the
ship.
When I mentioned this aspect of Churchill's life in a short piece I wrote for
The Pulse, the newsletter of the Goan Overseas Association (GOA), which I then
edited, besides other details such as he being the president of the Goa
Trawlers Association, none than that our great campaigner and advocate Aires
Rodrigues was furious. Churchill was then visiting Toronto and staying at
Aires's place.
In his anger, Aires, then a new member of GOA, tried to round up enough
signatories to meet the quota to call a special general body meeting to throw
me out of the GOA for having insulted Churchill. His beef was that my saying he
was president of the trawlers' body, I had indirectly referred to Churchill as
belonging to the fisherfolk community.
Not surprisingly, Aires could not secure enough signatures. I was informed by
some of them who he had approached.
What if I had mentioned Churchill's nefarious activities? Would Aires have
denied that Churchill ever engaged himself in such "black" deeds?
It is nice to see that Churchill, through whatever ways and means, has risen in
the political ranks from his lowly background. In fact, many politicians have
done so. To have also occupied the CM's seat for a brief period is also to his
credit.
We may like him or hate him, Churchill does add colour -- and noise -- to Goa's
hyperactive politics. Now we have the latest drama from Churchill bitter
enemy, Mickky.
Without these two, how would the Goans in Goa amuse themselves?

[Goanet] No woman is safe… Letter to the Edito r in Herald

2010-06-02 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
*No woman is safe…
C Da Costa, Margao
*The sad and untimely death of young Nadia Torreado, a girl from Loutolim
has sent shock waves down the spine of every young girl in Salcette and in
Goa. It is public knowledge, although the local newspapers tried to shelve
the culprit, despite Goa’s electronic media splashing it all over that
people of Goa know who the actual culprit is.
It was common view to see this particular controversial minister in the
Digambar Kamat ministry flaunt this girl and was also seen recently in Dubai
at the finals of a popular football tournament organized by Dubai Goans,
wherein the girl in question formed part of the minister’s entourage,
despite having a cast in one of her legs.
The sins of the ministers in the current Digambar Kamat dispensation are
becoming too many for the people of Goa to handle and since Digambar Kamat
is protecting such criminals in the sanctuary of his ministry, it would be
in the best interest of Goans if the centre shunts the current CM and
replaces him with a less corrupt and less evil option.
I hope the dead girl and her family will be given justice. Years ago in a
molestation case, the Goan voters pulled down a ruling party speaker, it is
to be seen if the people will come out to catch hold of Digambar Kamat to
sack this monster he has been long rearing in the cabinet and who is
responsible for a lot of crimes and has never done justice to the ministry
handled by him.
I am sure if there is a free and fair investigation, which we doubt, there
are more skeletons that will tumble from the closet…
Maybe, the police should raid the minister’s hideouts to stumble upon some
proof in this case.
Also, like the CM and his infamous double speak, this minister involved
recently made a statement in the media that tourist women are not safe in
Goa.
Is any girl safe from the clutches of politicians in Goa, specially the
dreaded woman snatchers?

allowed to mourn the loss of their dearest Nadia in peace.

It appears that the second autopsy indicated no foul play.

Hi Moderator,

Could you please post the appended response to Message 2 that appeared on
Goanet Digest Vol 5, Issue 534.

Thank you.

Dear Soter,

You have given us all some food for thought about Goans who are contributing
to the daily lives of Goans in Goa. I hope you are not endeavouring to hide
behind

your rash statement "Tarvotti and Middle East Goans have made money washing
the toilets of Firangi and Arabs".

In the past through your passionate postings, you have portrayed yourself as
an educated Goan and always wearing your heart on your sleeves like few
others we know

in Goa. In that pursuit you have put up some good cases on Goanet Digest
for which I thank you. I found you to be a very balanced man although
sometime there were elements of tangent nature.

We all make errors of judgement because we are after all human being. Your
comments regarding Tarvotti and people from the Gulf was a bad taste and one
below the belt!

Please pause for a moment and think that the genuine interest and real
difference that Goans make are those who have been Tarvotti's and those
working on the sandy shores

of Middle East including those in Goa. Goans in other countries have Goa in
their heart and spend time giving feed back even though they are busy with
their lives.

Goa is facing big challenges and we should all be seen working together to
avoid any more fractions between us.

You may find it appropriate after pondering to take back your words which
are by all means inappropriate.

Thank you for your good work in the past and best wishes for the future.

Great to know that Tarvottis risked their lives on the seas while Gulfies
slogged it out with job insecurity. All those who remain in Goa are nothing
but chors and waiting for white aunties to sponsor a drink or con some NRI

-What about thousands of Goan fishermen who continue to risk their lives on
the seas that we may have fish on our plates? What about the labour back in

malls and other luxuries that we enjoy? What about the coconut pluckers and
others who climb heights to give us toddy for our feast sannahs and vinegar
to cook our meat, tasty mangoes and the rest of delicious foods? What about
those health workers who work with communicable disease patients in Goan

I full heartedly agree with your comments, Jealousy is surely one of the
motives. Most Tarvotis and Gulfies return to Goa and settle down after grueling
tours of duty. They then begin to spend their money either for living expenses
or building houses or other purposes. This contributes tremendously to the
economy of Goa and without the influx of this foreign earned money, Goa's
economy would be in dire state. The Tarvotis and Gulfies are therefore the
saviors of Goa and those who condemn them would perhaps not enjoy their current
standing of living had it not been for the Tarvotis and Gulfies. True there are
some who flash their cash around but these are few. By enlarge, the majority
tend to live frugally, wisely spending their hard earned cash knowing how hard
they came by it.

It is strange that some people are picking on Tarvotis for working on ships,
flashing their wealth and calling them Tarvotteanchim bondolam. I may be
wrong but I get the feeling that is is the result of jealousy. These people
should understand that there are bad apples in every profession be it tarvotis,
Gulfies, medical field, lawyers, office goers or people settled in Europe, USA
or Canada.

To give their families a better living Tarvotis have sacrificed their family
lives and slogged on cargo ships/passenger ships to earn better wages and give
their families a higher standand of living. If they spent their hard earned
money on constructing beautiful houses it is their wish. Just because a few
Tarvotis, Gulfies and some people settled abroad flash their money does not
mean all of them waste their hard earned money. I condemn anyone flashing his
wealth and feel that is only ignorance and foolishness that they do this.

One must remember that often Tarvotis are jobless for months and this also
applies to Gulfies whose jobs are often unsecure and work in inhuman
conditions. Most realize that they have to save for the future. We should
bear in mind that it is not easy to earn the money what with them often
working 10 to 12 hours a day and Tarvotis most often have only the sky and sea
for company. Sealife is not easy with so many dangerous situations that they
encounter with rough weather, stormy seas and storms only for a living. Many
years ago I lost a good friend of mine who was on a maiden voyage as Radio
Officer on Chandragupta which sank in Atlantic ocean. I have many friends as
well as family members who work on ships. If there is one ex. crooked
Tarvoti, Churchill Alemao there are thousands decent Tarvotis. It would be
better to attack Politicians who carry on day light robbery, amass wealth and
are destroying Goa. They go scot free and flourishing. In fact sadly when
elections come, it is we the people who reelect these corrrupt and crooked
politicians to continue their loot.

[Goanet] Bigamy, extortion, assault - a minister's notoriety in Goa

2010-06-02 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
*By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar/IANS*

*Panaji, June 1 *(IANS) From charges of bigamy to extortion to assault -
controversial Goa Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco's repeated brushes with
the law have painted him in a range of unflattering colours of notoriety.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator, who personally drives a
heavy-duty Hummer H2 Geiger to work at the state secretariat, is currently
in the eye of yet another controversy after his alleged lover Nadia Torreado
died at a Chennai hospital Sunday, 15 days after she consumed rat poison.

Even as women activists and the opposition have started collectively asking
for Pacheco's expulsion from the cabinet in order to facilitate an impartial
probe into the mysterious poisoning and subsequent death of the 28-year-old
woman -- whom the minister has called a 'family friend', controversy itself
continues to be the permanent handmaiden of this off-and-on
bandana-and-goatee sporting minister.

The 46-year-old minister, who started off as an humble tailor with a
reputation for stitching exquisite wedding gowns (his official resume still
mentions fashion designing as his favourite pastime/recreation), had skirted
controversy in January last year while battling accusations of bigamy from
his first wife Sara.

Accused of bigamy by Sara, Pacheco at a press conference had justified his
relationship with his new live-in girlfriend Viola, saying: "You prove that
I am married twice and I will step down from the ministry. I am married only
once, to Sara. I can have as many women as I want."

The feisty minister, who's a stand-out figure in the Congress-led coalition
cabinet for his chest-and-biceps-hugging T-shirts and other colourfully bold
attires, attracted the ire of the NCP high command for this insensitive
comment, but Pacheco created an even bigger splash later that year by
calling Goa the "rape capital of India".

Controversial statements are unfortunately not the Benaulim legislator's
only handicap.

In 2002, in a case of road rage Pacheco assaulted a driver of a state
corporation bus on duty. While the driver filed a first information report
(FIR) with the police, the minister argued that he was only "trying to
correct the rash driver".

Pacheco once again courted controversy last year when a traffic police
constable complained to the local police that the minister had abused and
threatened him when he was on duty in Margao, a town in south Goa, 35 km
from here.

The list of offences filed against Pacheco do not end with accusations of
crunching fists and abuse-hurling.

The management of Treasures, a land-based casino, in June last year accused
Pacheco of extorting several lakh rupees from them.

The minister's reputation didn't exactly soar after the casino management
also leaked videos of him throwing thick wads of money on the casino's
gaming tables and assaulting one of the casino's dealers after an
altercation.

An FIR against Pacheco was subsequently filed by the casino management with
the Crime Branch, which is investigating the case.

The minister, in his defence, accused the casino management of duping him.

Pacheco's pet possession, the bulky Hummer in which he drives to work, has
also not escaped a brush with law, only this time it was enforcement
officers of the state transport department, who complained that he had not
registered the luxury vehicle.

Pacheco, whose educational qualification is Class 11 pass according to his
official resume, had randomly chosen the number '12' and painted it on his
number plate, reportedly because he was born Dec 12.

[Goanet] Goan Generation G A P

2010-06-02 Thread Plastino DCosta
Goan Generation G A P

By Mr. Plastino D'Costa

The Bollywood film 'Rock On' was a huge hit. Farhan Akhtar produced it and
played the lead role. He dominated the film, even singing the title song and
five other tracks. So huge was its popularity and critical acclaim, that today
the 'Rock On' script is showcased in Hollywood, as part of the archive of the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Rock On's songs were written by poet and writer Javed Akhtar, who is also
Farhan's father. In the '70s Javed wrote the epic blockbuster 'Sholay' with
partner Salim. Their other great scripts included 'Deewar' and 'Zanjeer'. He is
now Bollywood's most sought after lyrics writer, with hits like 'Swades' and
'Dil Chahta Hai'. Javed's writing lineage can be traced back seven generations,
and it is no surprise that Farhan is so talented.

Farhan and Javed live in India's city of opportunity - Mumbai. If Farhan and
Javed were Goans, chances are that Farhan would probably be on constant
collision course with his father. The latter would scuttle all his ideas with
'great' and 'glorious' stories of the past.

Frustrated, Farhan would eventually pack his bags and move out of Goa in search
of greener pastures. The clock would have stopped on Javed's success, if he
chose to stay in Goa. He would be entangled in political games played by the
GenerationPast, disturbing his creative mind. The only choices would be to
leave the system or adjust to mediocrity.

Sad but true; this is Goa. Highly talented individuals quietly leave Goa,
unable to work around the bottlenecks of GenerationPast. They then settle in
places where their talent is better appreciated. The loss is Goa's. Our
obsession for insignificant details and purposeless regulations has lost us the
big picture. Young talent is too fettered by rules. We have a dearth of new
ideas. A system with too much policy is not necessarily a smart system.

The exodus of young talented individuals has widened the gap between
GenerationNext and Generation Past, both physically and mentally. Young Goans
are sidelined; they have hardly any say in decisions affecting the future of
Goa. Were any youngsters taken into confidence when an international language
was dropped for the mother tongue as the compulsory medium of instruction in
government-aided primary schools? Take an unbiased survey among 18 to 21 years
olds and ask which language they prefer.

Most of GenerationPast is resigned to the belief that their family can progress
only by sending their sons and daughters away from Goa. This also gives elders
complete power.

Otherwise, how can one explain a mother coaxing her son the very day after he
arrives from out of the clutches of sea pirates - freed by the intervention of
the Prime Minister's Office - that he must return? Let's not fool ourselves.
She isn't persuading her son to join a battle to save the country. The family
is too used to foreign remittances, even if it means sending their children
into harm's way.

Some Goan politicians say they are promoting their children. This is an
eyewash. Instead of surrendering their own seats to their children, they
actually try to increase their political footprint by getting their children
elected from a neighboring constituency. That way, they can control two or more
constituencies; have their cake and eat it too.

The government also contributes to the Generation Gap. The old-but-not-needy of
GenerationPast get Social Security, but there's no sign of an allowance for the
genuinely educated unemployed. Our politicians should thank their stars that
they are not in a developed country, where unemployment numbers are published
weekly and politicians are held accountable for any significant rise in
numbers. Forget corruption, nepotism, red tape. Goa's politicians don't deserve
to be elected on the single count of not creating enough jobs for the youth.
They have cleverly made sure things remain in a permanent flux, so that
ambitious youth should leave Goa for their careers.

Youth who choose to stay and perform in Goa are usually overlooked,
discriminated against or intimidated. Laxmikant Shetgaonkar's wonderful film
gets recognition in faraway Canada, but not here. But now the writing is on the
wall. GenerationNext wants a level playing field, to perform without sucking up
to the political class.

Some gap between generations is natural in a society that promotes independent
thinking. But there are places like Carmona, in South Goa. This village exports
its scarce educated youth out of Goa. Those who stay back are at the mercy of
village elders.

No wonder a movement against a mega project has failed to pick up steam; the
village is controlled by elders who lack the virtue of the youth. Gram Sabhas
are stage managed and manipulated.

In many Carmona families, Generation Past is more educated then the children.
Was this intentionally done so the elders can call the shot

Soter, who has called Goans at home chors? It is strange that in your letter
you are the one who calls them chors. No one has looked down on other
professions or not appreciated them as you assume in your letter. As you
picked on Tarvottis saying that it is all Tarvottis bondollem, I defended them
and explained that there are bad persons in every profession. They have
earned their money and have every right to spend and do what they want with it.
Just because a few of them flash money and spend lavishly does not mean that
all Tarvottis and Gulfies are the same. There are bad/rotten apples in every
profession. One ex. crooked Tarvotti Churchill Alemao does not mean all
Tarvottis are like Churchill. I appreciate and salute every Goan who works
hard for his living and have never looked down upon any profession. No
matter what job we do, big or small, menial or skilled, we are all working for
a living and not begging. Every job has dignity and we should be proud of
whatever job we do.
